American actress and comedian Shelley Long pointed this out: “Not everyone can be trusted. I think we all have to be very selective about the people we trust.” As English author Sophie Kinsella puts it: “In the end, you have to choose whether or not to trustWhosomeone.”arethe people you can trust? An unknown author shared this thought: “Only trust someone who can see these three things in you: The sorrow behind your smile, the love be hind your anger, and the reason behind your silence.” Now, this reminds me of the words of American singer Sele na Gomez: “If you have three people in your life that you can trust, you can consider yourself the luckiest person in the whole world.”But life isn’t fair. There are al ways people you cannot trust at all. This is especially true when it comes to love. But when a per son is in love, he or she gambles not knowing whether he or she will win in the end. “Everyone suffers at least one bad betrayal in their lifetime,” says bestselling American writ er Sherrilyn Kenyon. “It’s what unites us. The trick is not to let it destroy your trust in others when that happens. Don’t let them take that from you.” As David Levithan puts it in his book, The Lover’s Dictionary: “‘It was a mistake,’ you said. But the cruel thing was, it felt like the mistake was mine, for trusting (loving)“Neveryou.”trust anyone, espe cially the people you admire,” Carlos Ruiz Safon reminds in The Shadow of the Wind. “Those are the ones who will make you suf fer the worst Rememberblows.”that!

CAN YOU BE TRUSTED?

Afraid of likely vendetta from American soldiers and Filipino guerrillas, hundreds of Japanese troops, following the liberation of Davao, fled to the jungle and became strag-glers. Sworn not to surrender to the enemy but to die in the name of the emperor, they adopted life on the lam, at times resorting to illegal activities in order to sur vive or obtain food. Forestry director Florencio Tamesis, in 1945, reported that the presence of Japanese strag glers in forests, notably in con cessions, added danger to the cutting of timber which, in turn, affected the availability of lum ber in both the domestic and foreignYearsmarkets.afterthe war, reports of stragglers in the wildlands continued. Official accounts in 1948 placed the number at 1,000 in Davao region alone.

Jonathan is a very wealthy man having started his business when he was still young. From time to time, people come to his office to do business with him. One of these visitors, Ace, be came his friend. And it came to pass that Jon athan’s daughter was graduating from college. He has to go to Ma nila to attend the ceremony. But he was worried about the money which he kept in his house. Jonathan brought the prob lem to his family. The wife sug gested that he could ask Ace for help. “I’m sure, Ace is willing to take care of our home while we are away,” the wife said. Jonathan had stayed at his house several times already but he never got any chance to test his loyalty and didn’t know if he should trust him enough with his life’sButearnings.stillhe contacted Ace and told him about his problem. Jon athan brought Ace to his room and gave the keys of the locker where he kept the money. After giving him some instructions, Jonathan left for Manila together with his Threefamily.days later, Jonathan returned to his home. When he saw Ace, he asked how he was doing. Instead of answering him calmly, Ace shouted: “Didn’t you trust me? Why did you put rocks in your locker? And if you hadn’t put your money in there, why did you give me the key to that lock er?”Everyone was shocked by what they heard from the mouth of Ace. Jonathan said, “But how do you know what was inside that locker? You must have opened the locker in my ab sence.”Ace kept silent. Jonathan continued, “I had kept those rocks inside that locker because I wanted to test your friendship.” After saying that, Jonathan asked Ace to leave his house and never to meet him again. Ace left the house in shame. The above story, which was adapted from moralstories26. com, gives us a lesson about trust. Award-winning American novelist Ernest Hemingway once said, “The best way to find out if you can trust somebody is to trustFriendshipthem.” is built on two things: respect and trust, accord ing to Stieg Larsson, author of The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. “Both elements have to be there. And it has to be mutual. You can have respect for someone, but if you don’t have trust, the friend ship will crumble.” But “trusting is hard,” Ma ria V. Snuyder wrote in Poison Study. “Knowing who to trust, even harder.” It happened to Frodo, the leading character in J.R.R. Tolk ien’s The Lord of the Ring. In Fel lowship of the Ring, Frodo told Sam: “But it does not seem that I can trust anyone.” Sam looked at Frodo unhap pily. “It all depends on what you want,” he said. “You can trust us to stick with you through thick and thin – to the bitter end. And you can trust us to keep any se cret of yours – closer than you keep it yourself. But you cannot trust us to let you face trouble alone, and go off without a word. We are your friends, Frodo.” Trust is one of the 15 things money can’t buy, according to Roy T. Bennett, author of The Light in the Heart. The other 14 are time, happiness, inner peace, integrity, love, character, man ners, health, respect, morals, pa tience, class, common sense and dignity.“Anything that’s human is mentionable, and anything that is mentionable can be more manageable,” American TV per sonality Fred Rogers once said. “When we can talk about our feelings, they become less over whelming, less upsetting, and less scary. The people we trust with that important talk can help us know that we are not alone.” A fragile thing is trust. It’s easy to break, easy to lose and one of the hardest things to ever get back. Oscar nominated sing er Lady Gaga made mention of trust that once it is broken, it stays forever. “Trust is like a mir ror,” she said. “You can fix it if it’s broken, but you can still see the crack in that mother fucker’s re flection.” Do not trust just anyone.

Maj. Jose Jereza, then Phil ip-pine Constabulary provin cial, asked interior secretary Jose C. Zulueta to hastily send rein-forcements to Davao to handle the hunt for the Jap anese, mostly hiding in the boundary of Davao and Bukid non where there were reports of cannibalism attributed to the strag-glers.Heinformed that from time to time the stragglers, regular ly in big groups, were forced to come down from the hills to the lowlands to replenish their fast-dwindling supplies. Some of the Japanese were even reported as armed but their physical attributes, due to lack of food, were ‘lean and hag gard, with signs of hunger and starvation plainly discern-ible.’ In response to the request, Jose Vargas, a special investi gator with the interior de-part ment, assured that a punitive force would be dispatched. He, however, disagreed with the estimate of Maj. Jereza, saying the number of stragglers could be anywhere from 200 to 300 only.He also said that with so many stragglers still in hiding, the stragglers ‘must be well organized and concentrated to have survived through the two and a half years since lib-era tion.’As life in the jungle became more difficult, the stragglers had to resort to terrorism and ‘kidnap for ransom.’ Vargas lat er reported after his Mindanao visit that many of the hos-tag es held by the Japanese were members of prominent families of Davao.Acase in point was the ab duction of the two daughters and a son of Mrs. M. Tionko, a sister-in-law of Leon A. Gar cia, Davao City mayor in 1948. To ensure prompt response to her predicament, she traveled to Manila to meet then interior secretary Jose C. Zulueta. She even offered P4,000 for the safe return of her Singapore’schildren.Sunday Tribune, in an article (‘Japs Terrorize A Province’) dated February 29, 1948, identified the abductees as Josefita, 25 years old, a sec ond-year pharmacy stu-dent of Santo Tomas University in Ma nila; Anita, 19 years old, a stu dent of Davao City High School; and Vicente who, according to a Moro who escaped from the Japanese, as having been killed. The Singapore Free Press, in its August 3, 1948, edition, came out with another story (‘Jap Stragglers Hold Filipinos’), stating:‘More than three years af ter the war, Japanese strag glers continue to hold Filipi no captives in their mountain hideouts in the southern Phil ippines, according to official re-ports reaching Manila. In both Davao and Cebu, the au thorities, aided by the military are continuing to make efforts so far without much success. It is believed that nothing less than a well organised mili tary campaign is required to dislodge the Japs from their moun-tain strongholds.’ In other areas, it was even reported that ‘Japanese strag glers and deserters waylaid the travelers and demanded food from them at bayonet-point.’ But invading the lowlands for food also cost the lives of many Japanese who were murdered by Filipinos in retalia-tion for the hardships in the invaders’ hands.

“Don’t confuse a stroke with a heart attack,” reminds Dr. Isadore Rosenfeld, au thor of The Best Treatment. “A stroke is what happens when the blood supply to a portion of the brain is in terrupted; a heart attack is what you suffer when the blockage is in an artery within the Actually, heart.”there are two main causes of stroke: a blocked artery (ischemic stroke) or leaking or burst ing of a blood vessel (hemor rhagic stroke). The Depart ment of Health reported that only 36% of the total stroke deaths are not attended by any medical personnel.

f you smoke, drink alcohol excessive ly, use illegal drugs, and don’t exer cise, then you are most likely to have a stroke. The following are also risk factors for stroke: abnormal heart rhythm, car diac structural abnormalities, high blood cholesterol and lipids, and high blood cell count. Cerebrovascular dis eases, which include stroke, is the second leading cause of death. The true stroke preva lence in the country is un certain, but reported esti mates vary between 0.9% (2005 data) to 2.6% (2017) of the population. Currently, the Philippines is home to almost 110 million people. In a study conducted by Dr. Jose C. Navarro of the University of Santo Tomas Hospital, he estimated that about half a million Filipinos would be affected by stroke,

The above risk factors can still be changed or man aged. But there are risk fac tors that you can’t do any thing. To name a few: older age, gender (stroke occurs more often in men), history of prior stroke, and heredity or genetics.Strokeis deadly; if not managed immediately, it may result in death. In Davao Region, an average of 85 deaths are recorded each day, according to the Phil ippines Statistics Authority (PSA).

The Philippine Health Insurance Corporation, the country’s national health in surance system, reimburses only P28,000 and P38,000 for ischemic and hemor rhagic strokes, respectively. Both cover professional and healthcare institution fees. As a result of the Local Government Code of 1991, the management of health systems were transferred from the national level to the provincial, city, and munici pal level or the local govern ment units (LGUs). “Coping to the new responsibilities that came with devolution posed a challenge to some LGUs, leaving some health facilities poorly equipped and staffed, thereby affect ing the quality of health services,” observed the Frontiers-published study, “Current State of Stroke Care in the Philippines.”

In Davao City, the Stroke Society of the Philippines listed the following hospitals as stroke-ready: San Pedro Hospital, Southern Philip pine Medical Center, Davao Doctors Hospital, and Metro Davao Medical and Research Center. The good news is: the first reading of an ordinance establishing a Stroke Rehab Center in the city has been approved by the city council. “… The discussion was very fruitful and we have already invited several stakeholders so we can open the rehab center soon or hopefully this year since it is really a big help,” Councilor Lorenzo Benjamin Villafuerte, who proposed the ordinance, was quoted as saying by Edge Davao’s Maya Padillo in a news Villafuertereport.is the chair of the Civil Political and Hu man Rights Committee; he is also a member of the Com mittee on Health.
