A case in point is the proposed Anti-Bullying Ordinance which is now progressing into the Committee level hearings of the legislative process in the Davao City Council.

Republic Act 10627, or the Anti-Bullying Act, provides the legal shield to children enrolled in kindergarten, elementary, and secondary schools and learning centers (collectively, “Schools”) from the so-called bullies. In contrast, the Amer ican government kept off the issue saying the matter is between the Japanese in vestors and workers and the Philippine government. For his part, Quezon ad mitted having only a limited understanding of the land issue brewing in Davao and did not want the Rodriguez order, which elicited differ ent reactions from various sectors, executed if it result ed in trouble. He was par ticularly interested in the assertions of the Japanese consuls in Davao and Manila that Japanese rights must be protected. But more significant ly, the Americans, already wary of the exclusion of their privileges under the Commonwealth, particularly the non-ownership by for eigners of any Filipino land, predicted that as soon as the eviction happens, Japan, by now spreading its conquest southwest of the islands, would eventually invade the country and subjugate it. McKelway wrote: ‘Amer icans who live in Mindanao [especially in Davao] and feel that it is one of the rare gar den spots of the whole world, with its fine climate, rich soil and plentiful rainfall, regard it as inevitable that when the American Flag is withdrawn, the Japanese economic con quest of the island will begin in earnest.’TheJapanese, already losing a foothold in its China campaign against the Allied forces, eventually invaded Davao City on December 8, 1941, the feast of the Immac ulate Conception, for reasons indirectly related to agricul ture, namely: (i) To thwart any US plan to convert the islands into an advance base of operations; (ii) to obtain staging areas and supply bases to improve operations against the Dutch East Indies and Guam; and (iii) to secure the lines of communication between occupied areas in the south and the Japanese home islands.

And not all situ ations require the same type of leadership style. Great leaders adapt to their sur rounding environments and empower the team to suc ceedManytogether.experts across countless leadership books and articles agree on certain principles required for lead ing a team to greatness, but when it comes down to it, the most important factor is whether or not the leader is getting the job done. I found a very nice quo tation shared by Dr. John C. If you truly want to test a man’s character, give him power”, already stressed Abraham Lincoln. Character is what you are doing in the dark. There are in numerable women holding theirRememberown. and look around: in the past and at present one can observe someone at any corner offer ing us to lead our way. Poli ticians compete for our vote of confidence. Athletes and entertainers show us their pictures of success. A lot of different religious leaders pledge, promise and bind in flock gatherings. Well, what are some of the traits that a great lead er must have or develop character? Is character re ally enough? How about in tegrity? Are you, my dear reader, a leader? Is what you are saying AND DOING, the same? 5,000 JAPANESE JOIN THE PROTEST ANTONIO V. FIGUEROA

The Washington-based The Sunday Star reporter Ben McKelway described the in cident in the December 15, 1935, edition of his paper: ‘What happened when the eviction was ordered… was that 4,000 or 5,000 Japanese marched to Davao and held a mass meeting, at which they declared that if evicted from the land only their dead bod ies could be taken off.’ It was arguably the larg est Japanese rally ever held in the town of Davao. The failure to force out the Japanese leases created quite a stir in Manila. Rodriguez told the President that the only alternative to formalize the eviction would be to call on Congress ‘to pass a law validating existing leases for the unexpired term and per mitting new ones.’

The Americans, now in their last leg of their privi leged stay in the archipela go, supported the Japanese, saying they were originally allowed by the government to take the leases that re sulted in the development of farms using their labor and inventiveness. They also warned that the Japanese government could make an incident out of a single Japa nese killing in the hands of a native despite the prevailing sentiment not to escalate the tension related to the landlease issue.

The land issue affecting the Japanese during Amer ican rule came to a head in 1935 after commerce and agriculture secretary Eulo gio Rodriguez recommended that those Japanese holding illegal leases had to be re moved from the land they were cultivating as farm es tates. To implement the Rodri guez order, a government agent was sent to Davao to issue lease-cancellation or ders with help from the local constables as executors. At the time, Japanese invest ments in Davao had already reached US$30 million, the same size as the country’s budget. But the Rodriguez or der was not implemented. While in Davao, the secre tary confronted the PC com mander on why the order was not carried out. He sim ply shrugged his shoulders and told him that against thousands of Japanese his 50 constables would be no match. The order to execute Ro driguez’s idea was met with a strong protest that year.

IF YOU’RE LOOKING FOR SOMETHING HOT!

This tourist destination located in the town of Maco in Davao de Oro is used to be known as Mainit Sulfuric Hot Spring. When the pandemic forced it to shut down, it seemed like every one has forgotten that it even existed. When it re-opened recently, it came with a new name--Bilawa Hot Waterfalls.Still, itwas the same hot waterfalls people know it for. It was understand able why the original name was called as such because it is mainit (Fil ipino word for “hot”) and the water contains some sulfur. It may be a hot spring but the over flowing hot sulfuric wa ter goes down from the upper portion and then forms a river below. Thus, the new name is more apt. In fact, bilawa is a Mansaka word for “waterfall.”

The upper portion is teeming with trees. But what is amazing is that there’s steam coming out from nowhere, giv ing you the idea that it is very hot. The heated water flows and cas cades over a rocky side of the mountain, whose surface is being depos ited with minerals. The result: awesome yellow stalactites.Thefirst time you put your feet into the ankle-deep water, it feels warm but a few minutes later your body will get to accli matize to it. By then, you get to enjoy taking a dip in some of its nat ural pools. According to Chris tine T. Dompor, pro vincial tourism officer of Davao de Oro, the sulfuric water from the hot waterfall has some therapeutic benefits. “If you go under the cas cades, you get to feel the soothing warm water and it gives you a feeling of being massaged,” she said. Prescilla Decena, ad ministrative officer of the provincial tourism office, said the natu ral health benefits you get from the relaxing warm shower include improved blood circu lation, stress reduction, body detoxification, re lieved muscle pain, and boosted immune sys tem. From Davao City to Tagum City, the travel time is about 2 hours. At the bus terminal, look for a jeepney bound to Masara. Inform the driv er you will get down at Mainit Hot Spring. It is an uphill walk from the main road. Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) chairman Noli Eala reiterated on Tues day that the PSC as the leading govern ment sports body is allied with those consid ered as stakeholders for Philippine sports.

CALL FOR UNITY

He said the PSC and the stake holders are sharing the passion of further strengthening Philip pine sports especially that some athletes scored big wins in the in ternational circuit in recent years.

“The way I would like to think of the PSC’s relationship with our stakeholders is that we are all allies and partners in bringing forward the agenda of Philip pine sports,” Eala said in a special physical session of the Philippine Sportswriters Association Forum at the PSC office.

One particular group he talk ed about is the PSC’s partner ship with the Philippine Olympic Committee (POC).

EDGE

The PSC has been helping the POC and its member nation al sports associations (NSA) in terms of funding the national ath letes’ training and their expendi tures in their overseas events. For Eala, the alliance goes be yond just giving them financial help.“The PSC’s relationship with the POC and the NSA’s is a collab oration that goes beyond merely a funding relationship. It is a col laboration in building programs in making sure that programs are sustainable and efficient,” he said.

“Ang pananaw ko ay (My point is) to provide partnership among organizations that push forward the agenda of sports.” He, however, also said the PSC is not in any way intervening with the NSAs’ decisions and even said their autonomy must be respect ed. The statement came as some fans, for one, have called for the former Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas executive director to step into his former organiza tion’s situation as its national team has had an up-and-down 2022 so “Hindifar. naman ibig sabihin nyan ay nakikialam ang PSC sa autonomy ng mga (It doesn’t mean that the PSC is disturbing the autonomy of the) national sports associations.
