A SHARP decline has registered in the income of the Davao region from gold production after many small scale miners and mining cooperatives stopped selling gold to the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas in 2011. This was reported by Regional Director Maria Lourdes D. Lim of the National Economic and Development Authority (Neda) in Region 11 yesterday. Lim and Regional Director Estrella R. Turingan of the National Statistical Coordination Board (NSCB) in Region 11 discussed the Davao region’s economic performance in 2011 in terms of Gross Regional Domestic Product (GRDP) as a special presentation of the ISpeak media forum at the Davao City Hall yesterday.
n Mining co-ops also stop selling as BIR ruled cooperatives no longer tax-exempt Lim said the mining sector suffered a decline in production from small-scale miners, a sector which contributes 98 percent of the gold output of the region, “as less gold is being sold to formal channels such as the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas.” She said this is due to the imposition of the two percent excise and 10-percent withholding tax im-

few days before she competes in the 2012 London Olympics, top US fencing bet Lee Oropilla Bacani Kiefer asked that a support note written by her aunt be pinned right on the map of the Philippines in the huge message board inside the sprawling Olympic Games Village. “We wrote one for Lee and tacked it on the USA map but then Lee said “put it on the Philippines on the map” - so I did! So if anyone who knows any athletes from the Philippines and they are wondering who Lee Kiefer is, please tell them she is half-Filipino and is thankful for all the support from Americans, Fil-Ams, and Filipinos in the Phiippines,” said Martz Angeles Coleman who visited the
18-year old Kiefer in the Games Village on Tuesday. Kiefer, the United States’ bet for women’s individual foil event and ranked no. 7 in the world, will go for the gold on Sunday at the ExCel Centre where a total of 35 pistes will be used for fencing. Kiefer’s mother is Teresa Bacani Oropilla who hails from Tagum City and married Steve Kiefer who is also a doctor and former fencing standout from Duke University. The Kiefer siblings—Alexandra, Lee and Axel-are all world-class fencers. Janice Bacani-Carandang, another relative of Kiefer, told EDGE Davao that her niece wanted to be known that she relishes being
half-Filipina and asked for the prayers and support of Davao and the country. “She is proud of her roots and she wants everyone to know that,” Carandang said of Lee who was raised by her mom to Filipino values. “She’s very respectful and humble despite her accomplishments. That story about
