den City of Samal last October 30. LTFRB-Davao spokesperson edgar Violan said his office will require the bus company to submit a detailed explanation on what really happened.
Violan said it came to their attention that the mishap took place after the ill-fated bus’s brakes malfunctioned prompting the driver to crash the vehicle against the mountainside.
“But we have to see the larger picture of the story. We will not speculate,” he said, adding that the city government under Mayor Aniano Antalan is also invited to attend the hearing. The LTFRB-Davao already issued a 30-day suspension order

Car shop owner Ungab identifying 2,000 hectares to file complaint for massive tree-growing project Baktin fallout
By Anthony S. Allada
T
he owner of the Golden Sapphire car shop in Matina Aplaya which yielded 22 “hot” vehicles, has decided to file a complaint against the person who allegedly left them in his custody. Philippine National Police highway Patrol Group (PNP-hPG) 11 regional director Sr. Supt. Gregorio Pimentel said the complainant, one elmer Ang, has been very cooperative with the ongoing investigation and is ready to execute an affidavit-complaint against a certain Rudy Macarampat, whose last known address was Kidapawan City. Pimentel said Macarampat has been linked to the Baktin carnap group whose leader, Ryan Cain Yu, is the subject of a police manhunt and a P5-million reward on his head put up by Davao City Vice Mayor Rodrigo Duterte. Pimental said aside from Macarampat, there are other suspects who will be named as respondents
in the multiple carnapping cases they are set to file on Monday. “We are ready to file more carnapping cases against those involved. We will see to it that even if they had posted bail on previous cases, we will still immediately re-arrest them because of these additional charges,” Pimentel said. On October 26, Ang surrendered the 22 luxury vehicles following the hPG’s intensified operations against the notorious Baktin group. he said the vehicles were simply left in his shop by Macarampat ostensibly for “repairs” sometime in April this year. Pimentel said most of the vehicles are Toyota-made and the rest are Nissan and Mitsubishi. Ang said his shop has been operating for sometime and accepts motor vehicles involved in accidents, towing the wrecks to his shop and helping in the vehicles’ insurance processing and claims. [ASA]

UNDReDS, if not thousands, of farmers will benefit from a massive tree-growing project involving 2,000 hectares in Marilog and surrounding mountain barangays in the 3rd legislative district. This after the Department of environment and Natural Resources (DeNR) agreed to involve the office of Rep. Isidro T. Ungab in the National Greening Program (NGP) and provide initial funding for the project. This was confirmed by regional executive director (ReD) Joselin Marcus e. Frigada during the recent signing of a memorandum of agreement (MOA) among Frigada, Mayor Sara D. Carpio representing the
Davao City government, edwin Regalado, general manager of the Davao City Water District (DCWD) and Mary Ann Fuertes, executive director of Interface Development Interventions (IDIS) involving monetary donations by the DCWD, Ungab IDIS, DeNR and city government for the delineation survey of the city’s watershed areas. Alfredo Sarazate, DeNR chief forest management specialist, told edge Davao that Ungab has the option to identify the tree-planting sites for as long as they are within timberlands. Sarazate said timberlands in the NGP may either be within community-based forest agreements
or within ancestral domains. however, both types of timberlands could also be within the eight identified watershed areas of the city as stipulated in the Davao City Watershed Code, also known as Watershed Protection, Conservation and Management Ordinance. Ungab earlier told edge Davao that he has began conferring with tribal chieftains whose tribes might be interested to participate in the NGP. Sarazate said the NGP areas may be planted with agroforestry speciies like coffee, cacao, falcata, rubber or any indigenous species that can thrive or grow in the areas or at the choice of participating farmers who will get technical assistance
from the DeNR. All proceeds from harvested NGP trees will go to participating farmers, he said. Planting will be done by participating farmers or familes, while funds will be provided by the DeNR. The responsibility of social mobilization will be shared by the Community environment and Natural Resources Office (Cenro) and the office of Rep. Ungab. “Maintenance and protection will be the responsibility of the farmers,” Sarazate said, adding that funds for the initial three years will be provided by the DeNR, while the remaining years will be taken crae of by the farmers and people’s organizations.

he Liberal Party (LP) and Nationalist People’s Coalition (NPC) tandem in Davao del Sur has a problem: choosing the replacement of their mayoralty candidate, former Bansalan mayor Peter Melchor Arches, following his untimely death recently. Vice Mayor Arnel “Atong” Gallardo, running-mate of Arches, said they have yet to decide on who they will put up to challenge Mayor edwin Reyes, who will be seeking his third and last term. The NPC provincial chair is former congress-
man and now gubernatorial candidate Claude Bautista while the LP provincial chair is his brother, second district congressional re-electionist Franklin Bautista. Reyes is running under the Nationalista Party (NP), whose provincial chair is Governor Douglas Cagas who is running for mayor of Digos City while his son, incumbent first district Rep. Marc Douglas Cagas IV, is seeking to replace him as governor. Reyes defeated Arches in the 2010 elections by a

hIRTeeN members of the 27th Infantry Battalion of the Philippine Army are in deep trouble for the death of the wife and two sons of a B’laan tribal leader in what could be a “massacre” in the hinterlands of Kiblawan town in Davao del Sur more than two weeks ago. Lt. Col. Lyndon Paniza, spokesperson of the 10th Infantry Division, said that the investigation conducted by the board of inquiry found the soldiers, including a lieutenant, who led the operating team, to have violated the Rules of engagement of the Articles of War. “Investigation showed that there is a tactical lapse and gross negligence of duty,” Paniza said, adding
the involved soldiers could be discharged from military service and face criminal charges and be jailed. he said that the military is not condoning any wrongdoing committed by the rank and file of the Philippine Army. “We shall let the rule of law prevail,” he said. It can be recalled that soldiers swooped down on the house of Daguil Capion, a alleged bandit leader who was blamed for a number of killings in Barangay Kimlawis, Kiblawan over his opposition to the Tampakan copper and gold project, and engaged him in a firefight. But they missed Capion, and instead hit wife who was two months pregnant, Juvy ,and two sons, Pop and
John, who died to gunshot wounds on the heads and bodies. The Capion family was backed by human rights groups and anti-mining organizations based in Marbel, South Cotabato and Davao City, convincing them to file murder charges against the soldiers involved in the operation. The planned $5.9-billion mine project is run by Swiss mining giant Xstrata and Australia’s Indophil Resources NL. The mine would be the country’s biggest source of foreign investment if it begins operations in 2016 as scheduled, although influential local church figures, tribal groups and environmental activists fiercely oppose it. In Asia-Pacific
Big investments needed for ‘dwindling’ natural capital B
OOMING economic development and per-capita consumption across the Asia-Pacific region is burning up more natural resources than are available, placing enormous pressure on the region’s already heavily taxed forests, rivers and oceans, says a new WWF report on the value of Asia’s natural capital. Produced in partnership with the Asian Development Bank (ADB), the ecological Footprint and Investment in Natural Capital in Asia and the Pacific report – a regional perspective on elements of the recently-released Living Planet Report – focuses on attainable methods of preserving key regional ecosystems including the marine wealth of the Coral Triangle, the unique forests of Borneo, the Mekong region’s diverse habitats, as well as the mountainous eastern himalayas. “Across the Asia-Pacific region, the gap between human demand for natural resources and the environment’s ability to replenish those resources is widening,” said WWF’s Director
General Jim Leape. “In 2008, the natural resources available per person, in places as diverse as the eastern himalayas and Mekong river basin, shrunk by about two thirds compared to 1970. Tragically, the rate of species loss was about twice the global average over this period.” The new report uses the Living Planet Index (LPI) to measure changes in the health of ecosystems across the Asia-Pacific region. The global index fell by 28 per cent from 1970 and 2008, while the Indo-Pacific region saw a shocking 64 per cent decline in key populations of species over the same period. “The Indo-Pacific realm has undergone the most rapid economic and demographic transition of any region in the world since 1970,” said Jonathan Loh from the Zoological Society of London (ZSL), the organization that keeps track of the index. “Across most of tropical Asia and the Pacific, the population grew from about 1.2 billion to 2.6 billion, which alone is enough to double the pres-
sures placed on the area’s natural resources. Coupled with the dramatic increase in per capita consumption across the entire Asia-Pacific region, it becomes clear that reversing this downward trend needs systemic changes to our economies and the way we produce and consume natural resources,” he added. Asia’s biggest footprints
Australia, Singapore, Mongolia, South Korea, New Zealand, Japan, Malaysia, Papua New Guinea, Thailand and China round out the top 10 ecological Footprints per capita in the Asia-Pacific region. Asia-Pacific residents still consume on average close to 60 per cent less than the global average of over one and half planets per person, but major disparities exist. The per-cap-
ita ecological Footprint of Australia, for example, is the highest in the region – 14 times larger than Timor-Leste. With an average ecological footprint rating of .98 per person, Filipinos consume far less than other nations – ranking 20th out of 148 studied countries. If everyone on planet earth consumed at this rate, humanity only needs .55 planets to thrive.
Legarda says
Countries like the United States on the other hand, consume four planet’s resources annually. China has the largest footprint of all the countries of Asia and the Pacific, due to its large population. China and India, the report says, are likely to experience the greatest increase in overall ecological Footprint by 2015, representing 37 per cent of the pro-
costs of approximately US$ 210 billion. Additionally, the 490 megatonnes (Mt) of CO2 savings per year is equivalent to the emissions of more than 122 million mid-size cars. “One of the most cost-effective ways to contribute to the reduction of global carbon emissions is the phase-out of inefficient lighting technologies,” said Achim Steiner, UN Under-Secretary-General and UNeP executive Director. “Increasing numbers of countries are now achieving major financial savings, generating green jobs, and seeing reductions in mercury, sulphur dioxide, and other pollutants from power stations, through a switch to efficient lighting. Ambitious policies and partnerships must be seized if the social, economic, and environmental benefits of a transition to a low-carbon, resource efficient green economy are to be realized.”
Senator Loren Legarda, United Nations Regional Champion for Disaster Risk Reduction and Climate Change Adaptation for Asia-Pacific, yesterday renewed her call for world leaders to take on bold and decisive actions to combat climate change, stressing that climate change has become a humanitarian challenge that will define the political future of the world’s greatest leaders. “As I have always said many years ago, climate change is the greatest development and humanitarian challenge of our times. It has become a defining political issue too in America, especially with New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg endorsing President Obama because of the steps he has taken to address climate change and New Jersey Governor Chris Christie commending President Obama’s actions during Superstorm Sandy’s wrath,” Legarda said. Mayor Michael Bloomberg cited President Obama’s efforts in
pushing for regulations that will cut down emissions from cars and power plants. Meanwhile, Governor Christie expressed appreciation to President Obama and the Federal emergency Management Agency officials for working in close coordination with the State government during the disaster. “even in the Philippines, climate change is a defining political issue because it means livelihood, jobs, homes, and our very survival,” Legarda added. “World leaders must not allow people to continuously suffer from floods, hunger, displacement, and economic setbacks. This is “disaster risk reduction politics”. The aftermath of Superstorm Sandy presents an opportunity to remind world leaders of their great responsibility to lead people out of the crises and uncertainties brought about by unsustainable development, worsening disasters and climate change,” Legarda concluded.
New UN opens Global Efficient Lighting Centre
e
FFORTS by developing countries to phase-out inefficient incandescent lamps received a significant boost as the UN and partners recently announced the opening of the Global efficient Lighting Centre (GeLC) in Beijing, China. Launched by the UN environment Programme (UNeP) and the Chinese National Lighting Test Centre, GeLC is designed to support the rapid deployment of energy-efficient technologies in developing and emerg-
Projects Spanning Africa, the Middle East, Latin America & South Pacific build capacity and boost rapid deployment of energy efficient technologies ing countries. To date, almost 50 developing and emerging countries have committed to phasing out incandescent lamps by 2016, under the en.lighten initiative - a partnership between UNeP and the Global environemnt Facility (GeF). According to a UNeP assessment released last June, a total of five per cent
of global electricity consumption could be saved every year through a transition to efficient lighting, resulting in annual worldwide savings of over US$ 110 billion. The yearly savings in electricity of the phaseout would be equivalent to closing over 250 large coalfired power plants, resulting in avoided investment

Special trade body formed in Soccsksargen Region
I
N a bid to improve the competitiveness of Region 12 or the Soccsksargen Region, the Regional Development Council (RDC) has created a special body that will oversee various trade and economic-related programs and policy reforms in the region. Dr. Rolando S. Doria, chair of the RDC-12’s economic development committee, said they passed a resolution creating the Regional Competitiveness Committee (RCC) as part of the council’s special functions. he said the RCC is mainly tasked to lead the promotion and implementation of competitiveness and productivity programs in the region. Region 12 covers the provinces of South Cotabato, Sultan Kudarat, Sarangani and North Cotabato and the cities of General Santos, Koronadal, Kidapawan, Tacurong and Cotabato. Doria, who works for the mining firm Sagittarius Mines Inc., said the creation of the RCC was an offshoot of the re-
cent visit in the region of business executive Guillermo Luz, the private sector co-chairperson of the National Competitiveness Council (NCC). The NCC, which was originally named Public-Private Task Force on Philippine Competitiveness (P-PTFPC), was earlier established to set in motion various initiatives that will help improve the country’s global competitiveness. Trade and Industry Secretary Gregory Domingo and Luz presently act as NCC co-chairpersons for the public and private sectors, respectively. Through the NCC, which was created by virtue of executive Orders 571 and 44, Doria said regional committees are being established throughout the country to ensure the wider implementation of competitiveness and productivity initiatives. “The RCCs are being organized in the regions to plan out how to make the regions more competitive,” he said. Doria said his committee
initially created a technical working group (TWG) to work on the details of the RCC’s operationalization, especially its functions and membership composition. he said the TWG will also set the RCC’s initial strategies and coordination mechanisms with the NCC, local and national government agencies and concerned sectors. In a statement, Luz earlier said the NCC has been promoting the regions’ involvement in its initiatives as a strategy in boosting the country’s competitiveness ranking by international organizations, among them the World economic Forum. “It’s about time economic centers are not concentrated anymore in Metro Manila,” he said. Aside from implementing competitiveness and productivity programs, the NCC said the regional committees were tasked to track the competency levels of provinces, cities and municipalities; gather/
update data on competitiveness, studies, reports and business risk assessment; conduct capability-building and training programs; establish networks and linkages with various development partners on areas such as customer service streamlining and service excellence – attitude and behavior of frontliners. The NCC’s programs are focused on 11 areas that were expected to improve the country’s competitiveness. These are on education and human resources development; performance governance system; streamlined business permits and licensing system; Philippine Business Registry system; customs/national single window; infrastructure; power and energy; transparency in budget delivery; anti-corruption; information and communication technology governance framework; and, judicial reform. ARTY list representative Teddy Casiño yesterday urged Congress to pass a new agrarian reform law to address the continuing landlessness of peasants even after 24 years of the failed yet extended Comprehensive Agrarian Reform Program (CARP). “The mere fact that the CARP needs another extension even if it has been going on for decades is proof that it is a failure. Until now 7 out of 10 farmers in the country are landless and poor, in some areas it is 8 out of 10. In fact, many beneficiaries have sold their lands back to the landwoners and many landowners have yet to be compensated,” said the Makabayan senatorial bet. “It is high time that the Aquino administration admit that we need a genuinely progressive agrarian reform law and not a flawed one like CARP,” added Casiño, one of the authors of the proposed Genuine Agrarian Re-

Cops tracing ‘Baktin’ operation in Region 12
P
OLICe investigators in Region 12 are reviewing various carnapping cases in the city and the neighboring areas in the last several months that allegedly involved the notorious Baktin carnapping network. Senior Supt. Romeo Campomanes, Philippine National Police-highway Patrol Group (hPG) Region 12 director, said he directed the review to help track down the syndicate’s possible cohorts in the region. he said they are also checking the records of some of the stolen vehicles that were recovered in the region in the last several months. “This (Baktin group) is a big syndicate and its operations also cover parts of Luzon and the Visayas area. It appeared in the past that its network had actively operated in the region,” he said in a radio interview. Region 12 covers the provinces of South Cotabato, Sultan Kudarat, Sarangani and North Cotabato and the cities of General Santos, Koronadal, Tacurong, Kidapawan and Cotabato. Campomanes said they have already alerted police units in the region for the possible presence
of the carnapping group’s alleged leader, Ryan Yu alias Baktin, and its other members. Last week, police operatives in Davao City recovered 23 vehicles that were allegedly stolen by the Baktin group. The stolen vehicles were found in a warehouse supposedly operated by Yu in Barangay Aquino. Yu, who now carries a P5 million bounty offered by Davao City Vice Mayor Rodrigo Duterte, had eluded arrest but four members of the syndicate were arrested following the recovery of additional stolen vehicles in Surigao. early this year, the hPG-12 recovered 16 stolen motor vehicles here and the neighboring areas as part of a series of operation in connection with a special intelligence project dubbed Case Operation Plan “Inbox.” The recovered vehicles, which included several sports utility vehicles, were part of the 26 stolen units that were recovered by hPG in the second phase of their operations against the Baktin group, which it described as a big time carnapping and carjacking group operating nationwide.[Allen V. ComVal performs more education interventions T
he Compostela Valley Province, being known of its initiated education interventions, continuously supports the national goal of providing quality education to children. It’s “Kalinga sa Kabataan, Bayanihan sa Paaralan” (KKBSP)
Program has already constructed 43 classroom-buildings in the different sites of the province. It is an innovative approach implemented by the provincial government in partnership with the Department of education (Deped), private sectors, and the community throughbayanihan the Gawad Kalinga way. The distribution of arm chairs, teachers tables, and desks to public schools are also done from time to time. Believing also that establishing a quality education doesn’t only mean having comfortable classrooms and facilities but equally important as well
is for students to learn how to read and comprehend what they read, Governor Arturo T. Uy expanded his Project ARTURO (Accelerated Readers, Tomorrow’s Ultimate Response to Opportunities) which is now on its second waive. Recognizing also the strong existence of public-private-partnership, private entities joined in as partners of the endeavor. One of them is the Alcantara Foundation that introduces to the province an education reform program called COMeT (Compostela Valley: Transforming education Today), an approach of making the students
find more fun in learning and develop their skills particularly in reading. Scholarship grant is also extended to the poor but deserving students in the province. Advance studies are also given to teachers. It can be recalled also that with the provincial government’s efforts to support the programs and endeavors of the Department of education (Deped) towards providing high quality education in the country, recently another national recognition is received by ComVal through the Deped’s Adopt-A-School Program. Cala-cala, an urban poor community, was wiped out completely by Sendong. eleven months after Sendong struck and killed at least 1,200 people in Cagayan de Oro and Iligan cities, those who survived still vividly recall the fateful moments when the Cagayan de Oro River swelled, its waters crashing into their homes. “This is my house. heRe may be a thousand and one reasons why the world’s scientists believe in climate change, a.k.a. global warming, and the grave implications it has for humankind’s survival. “The scientific opinion on climate is that the earth’s climate system is unequivocally warming, and it is more than 90 percent certain that humans are causing it through activities that increase concentration of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere, such as deforestation and burning fossil fuels. This scientific consensus is expressed in synthesis reports, scientific bodies of national and international standing, and surveys of opinion among climate scientists. Individual scientists, universities, and laboratories contribute to the overall scientific opinion via their peer-reviewed publications, and the areas of collective agreement and relative certainty are summarized into these high level reports and surveys.” (Wikipedia) The only dissenting opinion of note to this consensus comes from the American Association of Petroleum Geologists whose updated opinion was issued in 2007. spread devastation in the United States affected in various degrees 23 states was described by New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie as “unbelievable.” The monster storm is reported to have been caused by climate change. There are, however, still those who disagree with this opinion. The climate scientists themselves are currently debating on whether the destructive patterns of the storm can be attributed to climate change. We wonder it such debate is necessary. Why don’t the scientists spend their “super” intelligence in thinking of ways to mitigate the effects of these natural disasters? We worry about this adamance in the country which is acknowleged to be the “No. 1 polluter of the world,” as CNN’s Christian Amampour said in her broadcast in the aftermath of Sandy. This the same country which to this day refuses to sign the Kyoto Protocol and similar international covenants for the reduction of carbon footprints and other actions designed to mitigate climate change. The rest of the world looks up to the United States for leadership on this matter, but it continues to deny it. Instead of showing the world the way, it seems to be leading us to the road of perdition. ANTONIO M. AJERO Editor in Chief

he large budget deficits and expansion of the national debt under President Barack Obama, unprecedented since World War II, have him set to bequeath an immensely costly legacy. each of his deficits as a percentage of gross domestic product has been larger than the previous post-World War II record, for which Democrats excoriated President Ronald Reagan. Between the debt already racked up and what Obama’s FY13 budget projects, each income-tax-paying family will owe more in Obama debt than a new mortgage on a median-priced home and four years of college costs. Yet more than three years into recovery from the recession, the president has not proposed a program to deal with the massive debt. Indeed, he abandoned even the longrun goal of a balanced budget, adopting the much weaker goal of stabilizing the debt-GDP ratio at the higher projected FY2016 level. But he did not budget for it, appointed the Simpson-Bowles Commission to propose how to do so, then ignored its recommendations. he has no serious proposals to deal with the even larger eventual long-run deficits in Social Security and Medicare, which total several times the current national debt. When Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner was asked by Congress what the administration’s plan was, he said, “We don’t have one.” Vice President Joe Biden guaranteed, “No changes to Social Security.” The government has been borrowing to cover 30 percent to 40 percent of its budget, hiding the true tax cost of government spending from voters. The $5.5 trillion in debt already accumulated in Obama’s first four years implies a future $5.5 trillion tax hike (in present discounted value). The projected future deficits and debt likewise add up to another immense tax hike, with marginal tax rates eventually reaching 70 percent for many middle-income families. That’s because every dollar borrowed requires future interest be paid; so unless future spending is cut, future taxes must go up to cover the interest. The prospect and then reality of higher tax rates, plus increased uncertainty about fiscal policy, slow growth and raise the specters of higher inflation eroding the value of the government debt and even a financial crisis. higher debt above a modest level slows growth because it eventually crowds out investment, and the lower capital formation reduces future incomes. how serious are these negative consequences of Obama’s debt buildup likely to be? Obama’s Office of Management and Budget provides long-run deficit and debt estimates based on the administration policies, as implemented and proposed, continuing. These include his tax increases, health policy and, importantly, the absence of Social Security and Medicare reform. Combining these estimates into a realistic projection but with more optimistic growth and healthcare cost containment assumptions than those in the Congressional Budget Office Alternative Fiscal Scenario drives the (publicly held) debt-GDP ratio, currently 73 percent, over 90 percent next decade, 100 percent immediately thereafter and over 200 percent of GDP around 2050. For comparison, that is well beyond Greece today. Many economists believe the high debt burdens harm the economy considerably more when debt gets above 90 percent or so of GDP. At the end of 2008, it was 40 percent. The International Monetary Fund estimates the harmful effects of debt on growth at just under 0.2 percent per year for each 10-percentage-point increase in the debtGDP ratio. The president’s policies, if continued, would bring growth to a halt by 2050, at a level of GDP 30 percent lower than if his debt-explosion policies had not been continued. That’s most of a generation of per capita income gains wiped out, or, put another way, it is as large as the gap between American and lower Western european per capita incomes. Left unchecked, the average projected annual per family hit would be about 30 percent of income by the time today’s kids are in the midst of their careers. even if the effect of debt on growth is just half that estimated by the IMF, the Obama[r9] debt accumulation has severe negative consequences for future living standards. The debt increase under President Obama, plus the administration’s own projections of debt based on his policies continuing, should concern everyone, rich, poor or middle-income, urban or rural, young or old, Republican or Democrat. Failing to rapidly begin bending the long-run debt-GDP curve down risks a growth disaster, a lost generation of growth whose severity would be much worse even than the recent deep recession and tragically anemic recovery.

Sense of disappointment
OOKING TeRRIBLe SILLY – There is a disturbing aspect in the Filipino character. It comes as no surprise that with the kind of temperament that we have perhaps we will be rated very poorly by virtuous societies. We are turning out to be increasingly inclined in raising complaints including those that don’t even merit the attention of government. Perhaps tellingly, we have the tendency to find fault and the right patsy upon whom to pin the blame because of the misgivings in life. Probably the most stinging charge is that government is remiss in its obligations to the people notably the minority sector. A greater number of us are harsh on whoever steered the levers of power – their programs and policies. Sad to lament, though, but this is all we can say: we have the habit of relying on our own biased opinions and a self-confidence bordering on arrogance and pretention. The toughest problem relates to the very nature of the Filipino character – hard to please but hasty in making judgment. One glaring indication is the recently concluded registration of new voters. A deep sense of disappointment has replaced the expected smooth turnout of new registrants. Tired, hungry and infuriated, late registrants are blaming the whole mess on what they see as a failure of the Commission on elections (Comelec) to handle an orderly process. But wait a minute. In fairness to the undermanned poll body, it has already been more than a year since the registration for new voters has started. Continuous announcements through the media had been undertaken by the Comelec to remind those who want to register to file early to avoid crowd-pressing and waste
B
of time. But more is needed to force people to heed a government directive – more so now, when there will be no more extension of the registration of new voters. For the duration of the registration period, new registrant-voters have argued that lack of time due to hectic work schedule makes it difficult for them to register on time. Goodness gracious! Tell that to the Marines, gentlemen and ladies. Remember, that Comelec offices across the country are open from Monday to Saturday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.; the rest of 2011 and 2012 yet people still have the audacity to say that they’re too “preoccupied” during those periods. Too bad, indeed! In some ways, so many ways for that matter, these people have themselves to blame. They looked terribly silly trying to portray government as the main culprit of all the tribulations in the country. But in the eyes of average law-abiding Filipinos, many among us might as well have forgotten the “Golden Rule” which has been taught since our first day in school – “Don’t do for tomorrow what you can do for today.” Certainly people spent much of their life thinking that whatever they do is always right – a case of falseness. Ironically, political experts blamed the people’s grievances not on too little democracy, but too much of it which I tend to agree. Democracy in this country has been exploited and disregarded. They claim that in the Filipino paradigm,
values such as obedience, honesty and respect are nowhere to be found. Added to that, they say that in order to push progress and development, law-abiding and peace-loving citizens are needed to “protect, organize and guide” the country’s socio-political and economic activities. Unfortunately, many of our people had been shown to be thriving on criticism, hatred and lack of accountability. For years, the conceited and abusive lot continued vilifying and pestering the administration – its leaders, programs and policies, yet they don’t want to be told to pay their taxes and other financial obligations due to the government. They decried the government’s lackluster effort to solve the worsening flood problem, yet they are the major contributors to the miserable situation. They wantonly disposed their garbage and other refuse wherever they want and as they please – streets, canals and any pool of water there is. They would violate even the simplest traffic rules and regulations – motorists jump on red light or over-speed while pedestrians are habitual jaywalkers. That’s just a few of the Filipino’s undesirable character. If character change is to begin among Filipinos, the starting point must be stopping to look for the right pawn upon whom to fix the blame on what happened to them – their miseries and misfortunes in life. Instead they must share and cooperate, engage government and its representative system in honest and serious talks to restrain the increasingly desperate and frustrated young Filipino generation. To those who have nothing to share except to find fault, better shut up because you cheaply looked like loose cannons with runaway mouths.
Another tourists’ favorite in Bohol speCial Feature ‘Maya Garden Hill treeBy Ben cal house was conceived and designed by retired Navy Rear Admiral Manny de Leon, former chief of the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) who opted to settle permanently in Bohol with his pretty Boholana wife, Sonia Clarin.’
OhOL is known worldwide for its famous Chocolate hills, tarsiers and elegant white beaches but a unique architecture design dubbed as “Maya hill Garden” treehouse, located in a mini-forest near the beach of this beautiful island paradise, is emerging as a top favorite for tourists with a big family in tow. Maya Garden hill tree-house was conceived and designed by retired Navy Rear Admiral Manny de Leon, former chief of the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) who opted to settle permanently in Bohol with his pretty Boholana wife, Sonia Clarin. Instead of constructing the usual prototype pension house for budget-conscious tourists, the couple thought of building a two-storey treehouse, virtually hugging among the trees in the forested area in Barangay Songkulan in the town of Dauis on Panglao Island about four kilometers west from the capital city of Tagbilaran. The Maya Garden hill, as a living quarter for tourists, is believed to be the first of its kind in the Philippines. It is expected to promote further tourism in Bohol.
The two-storey tree-house, which is just 150 meters from the beach, complete with amenities such as computers with wifi, a receiving room, dining place, bedrooms, refrigerators, television sets and a parking lot. What is unique about the place is its surroundings with fresh air coming from the sea that enables one to relax. The food is no problem. The visitors have their choice. They can cook their own food or order them from the restaurant in-house. Transportation is also not a problem. Public transport is readily available. Since it is virtually a tree-house, bird watching is a favorite past time for visitors at no extra cost. During an interview with this writer, Manny and Sonia said that friends who had stayed at the tree-house were telling their friends by word of mouth about how wholesome their stay at Bohol’s new “skyline” free from the cacophony of city life. The battle over Benghazi analysis By Jack Shafer
( 1st of two parts )
W
heN Washington bureaucracies rumble, they often avoid directly savaging one another by using the press as proxies. By leaking selectively to news outlets they believe will give them the most sympathetic hearing, they hope to shape the news by making it. The strategy doesn’t always work. Sock puppetry revolts good reporters and some bad ones, too, because they know carrying tainted water for a source today may stain their reputations tomorrow. The Benghazi story hasn’t turned any reporters into absolute dummies—yet—but as the tag-team match of blame being played by the White house, the State Department, a congressional committee, and the CIA escalates–and with the Romney campaign eager to ponce on anything that makes the administration look bad–don’t be surprised if unnamed sources start spinning the facts in a self-serving manner. You shouldn’t feel bad if you’re confused about Benghazi and have no idea who should be sacked for not doing his job: Press accounts and comments from President Barack Obama and Secretary of State hillary Clinton have all congealed into one murky, confusing stew. Now, clarity has arrived in a new ultra-narrative given yesterday to Washington Post columnist David Ignatius, the New York Times, Reuters, the Wall Street Journal, the Washington Post, and others, sourced to a “senior administration official,” “senior intelligence officials,” “a senior American intelligence official,” “a senior U.S. intelligence official,” and “U.S. intelligence officials,” respectively. It’s hard to believe these officials are anyone other than CIA brass, something Ignatius’s column said quite literally when it was first posted with a headline reading, “CIA Offers Detailed Account of Attack in Libya.” Later, that headline was swapped out with the more generic “U.S. Offers Detailed Account of Attack in Libya,” as this screenshot tweeted by Jeremy Scahill attests. In the time line put out by the CIA, the agency essentially takes the blame for the deaths of Ambassador Christopher Steven and three other Americans in Benghazi on Sept. 11. But it also takes credit for the rescue of 30-plus other U.S. officials. The Journal reports: The U.S. effort in Benghazi was at its heart a CIA operation, according to officials briefed on the intelligence. Of the more than 30 American officials evacuated from Benghazi following the deadly assault, only seven worked for the State Department. Nearly all the rest worked for the CIA, under diplomatic cover, which was a principal purpose of the consulate, these officials said. The CIA version attempts to extinguish the flaming Fox News account of Oct. 26, which accused agency superiors of preventing the rescue of Americans in Benghazi. The piece cites anonymous “sources who were on the ground in Benghazi” who say the “CIA chain of command” allegedly told “CIA operators twice to ‘stand down’ rather than help” the besieged ambassador and his team. “There were no orders to anybody to stand down in providing support,” an anonymous official tells the Times.

seeks an eleventh hour breakthrough. Obama will campaign in Ohio, the possible tipping point state, before heading to Wisconsin and Iowa, his trio of “firewall” battlegrounds ahead of a late night rally in Virginia, where he still hopes for a win. Romney, fresh from the biggest rally of his campaign, which drew around 18,000 people on a cold night in West Chester, Ohio, Friday will
travel to New hampshire, Iowa and Colorado. In a show of close combat on the last weekend of the campaign, both candidates will be in the eastern Iowa town of Dubuque, within hours of one another. Romney warmed up for the frenzied last weekend with a huge rally in Ohio, bringing together his former primary rivals Rick Santorum and Rick Perry, along with Obama’s 2008 rival
John McCain. In all, 45 lawmakers and relatives of the candidate and running mate Paul Ryan -- wearing Romney jackets -- attended the rally near the Republican stronghold of Cincinnati. “We’re almost home. One final push will get us there,” Romney said before a crowd police estimated to be at least 18,000 strong. “We are so very, very close. The door to a brighter future is there, it’s open, it’s waiting for us.” Obama had earlier evaded a last-minute time bomb as the economy pumped out more jobs than expected in October, delivering a boost to his re-election hopes as the final weekend of campaigning begins. Romney, however, seized on an uptick in the jobless rate by a tenth of a point to 7.9 percent to bemoan an economy at a “virtual standstill.” After several weeks of polls suggesting a neckand-neck race, there were new signs that Obama’s position, as he seeks a second term, may be solidifying. But it also clearly identifies attainable solutions that build on the strength of partnerships at local, regional and international levels,” said Leape. “Rio+20 offers governments, businesses and civil society a unique opportunity to develop even more innovative solutions to ensuring we preserve the natural wealth of our planet.” ADB and WWF have worked in partnership since 2001 on mainstreaming environment in development and supporting the countries of Asia and the Pacific in conserving their natural capital.
man-an, 59-year-old Alice Nillos lighted a candle at a big cross beside the unmarked vault where the unclaimed and unidentified Sendong victims were buried. Nillos said the candles were for her niece, Jingjing Palma, her husband Dodo, and their seven-year old son. She said that Jingjing’s dead body was found on the second day stuck to a floating tree in the Cagayan de Oro River, but
Dodo and the child still remained missing to this day. “Maybe they are inside the vault and maybe they are not. Just the same, I light candles and say prayers for their souls,” she said. Nillos said she made it a habit to light a candle every 17th of the month because she is the only relative of Jingjing. [Froilan Gallardo/MindaNews]

Roach pleased with Pacquiao’s progress M
ANNY Pacquiao showed a lot of improvement when he sparred for the second time at the Wild Card Gym on Thursday. Pacquiao, revving up for the fourth fight with Juan Manuel Marquez on Dec. 8 at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, racked up six rounds, facing old hand Rey Beltran and newcomer Suhrab Shidaev. “I am pleased,” said trainer Freddie Roach after presiding over Pacquiao’s fourth day at the gym. Pacquiao was rusty when he sparred for the first time on Tuesday and even Top Rank head Bob Arum didn’t mince words in saying the Filipino is still groping for form. Mike Koncz, the Canadian adviser of Pacquiao, blamed jet lag to his boss’s anemic showing in his first sparring session. But after a couple of days, and as assured by Roach, Pacquiao was back in his element, leaving the
crowd satisfied. Pacquiao, who arrived in the US only last Saturday, will raise the number of sparring rounds to about seven or eight this Saturday. Roach said that the number of sparring rounds will be lessened in this training camp, saying Pacquiao doesn’t need all
those banging at this stage in his career. Usually, Pacquiao logs between 120 to 150 rounds of sparring. This time, Roach said just 100 rounds will do it. With less than six weeks to go before the fight, Pacquiao is slowly getting into form and everyone around him seems pleased.
Pacquiao is a 4-1 favorite to whip Marquez and hand him his third loss. however, Marquez has vowed to get back at Pacquiao, displaying excellent form in his workouts under Nacho Beristain in Mexico City. Marquez said he needs a knockout to avoid getting screwed in the scoring.

From Davao City to Arakan Valley in North Cotabato: Bikers unite to save the Philippine Eagle
t was the first time for 15-year old newbie biker april Jay abon to join a biking event. and for him, the exhilarating feeling of reaching the finish line more than made up for aching limbs and tired muscles brought about by the grueling 55-kilometer biking trail. a fourth year high school student in assumption College of Davao, Jay was one of the 82 individuals who signed up for the first Globe arakan XC (cross-country) event which brought bikers from Davao City to arakan Valley in North Cotabato. Their mission: not only to test their mettle in cross-country biking but most importantly, to help protect, preserve, and conserve the Philippine eagle habitat. Though most of the trail was along the national road, the uphill climb coupled with the distance, forced practically half of the bikers to bail out. But Jay was an exception. With his strong stamina and endurance brought about by youth, perseverance, and training, Jay was able to complete the challenge including the last five-kilometer stretch which even 4x4 vehicles had difficulty navigating due to the muddy terrain, loose gravel, deep potholes and huge

ground depressions. On the other hand, 31-year old Jason Yap, a veteran of sports challenges and a triathlete, placed first as he clocked in 3 hours, 4 minutes, and 3 seconds followed by Medel Galendez with 3:37:33. Oscar escudero, a very fit and youthful looking 62-year old doctor, the oldest in the group, bagged third place with 3:42:22. “My plan was just to do a fun ride and support the advocacy at the same time. But when i learned that there were only three bikers ahead of me, that was when i decided to give my all and finish the course. Considering the terrain, i think my time is good enough,” said Yap, who has been doing mountain biking since 2007 as he pointed out that the terrain was quite challenging and technical in nature due to a number of uphill and downhill slopes. The trail was carefully chosen by the everest Outdoors team of Mt. everest summiteer Pastour emata together with Dax ang to show the current state of arakan Valley where isolated forest fragments are located. For this activity, the beneficiary is the Philippine eagle Foundation which handles the arakan Forest Corridor Development initiative, a community-based reforestation project. “We continue to look for environmentally critical areas to support and found it in arakan. We’re here for the long haul. We don’t want projects like this to be oneoff. so we’re already thinking about how to make it more exciting next year,” said rob i. Hurricane Sandy Telethon:
Best moments include Christina Aguilera, Bruce Springsteen, Jon Stewart & Aerosmith sCHeDuLiNG conflicts don’t apply when big celebrities are needed for a good cause.
an all-star team assembled tonight for a telethon benefiting the red Cross in the wake of post-tropical storm sandy, which rammed into the east Coast earlier this week with hurricane-caliber intensity, killing more than 70 people and causing billions of dollars in damage in New York, New Jersey and beyond. But while the atmosphere was subdued Friday as celebs ranging from Jon stewart and Jimmy Fallon to sting and steven tyler did their part to bring in donations, spirits were riding high. Here are some of the night’s most memorable moments: • Excellent Acoustics: Perhaps in a nod to the fact that so many New Yorkers were left without power up until today, all of tonight’s performances were stripped-down versions of more booming productions, making for pitchperfect musical accompaniment. • Christina Aguilera opened the telethon with “Beautiful”; Jon Bon Jovi, who also was seen touring his New Jersey hometown of sayreville, strummed “Who says You Can’t Go Home” and “Livin’ on a
Prayer”; tyler joined Fallon for “under the Boardwalk,” with piano and guitar accompaniment from Billy Joel and Bruce springsteen, and then wailed “Dream On” with fellow aerosmith mates Joe Perry and Brad Whitford; sting plucked out “Message in a Bottle”; Joel hammered out “Miami 2017 (seen the Lights Go Out on Broadway)”; Mary J. Blige warbled “The Living Proof”; and springsteen and the e street Band closed with “Land of Hope and Dreams.” • Matt Lauer hit the right notes as host, with help from stewart, Brian Williams and al roker. • Williams and Stewart provided the comic relief,
the NBC Nightly News and Daily show stars continuing their mock-rivalry when Williams began with, “Growing up on the Jersey shore as a short, Jewish...” “i think that’s my line,” stewart said. “Oh, sorry,” Williams apologized. • For an event that came together in just a few days, the star power was heavy: in addition to those mentioned, Kevin Bacon, Whoopi Goldberg, Danny DeVito, tina Fey and ann Curry all showed up to help out. speaking on behalf of New York, New Jersey and the rest of the affected areas, stewart promised, “We’re coming back.” Meanwhile, whatever
is raised tonight will go in the red Cross’ coffers along with seven-figure donations from News Corp., Disney and other corporations, as well as the $100,000 Jersey girl Chelsea Handler pledged the other night and $100,000 from Bethenny Frankel’s skinnygirl Cocktails and its parent company, Beam inc. Ben stiller, who has tweeted prolifically about donating to the red Cross this week, was spotted at a Brooklyn shelter earlier today serving food, and yesterday, alec Baldwin visited NYu students who had been evacuated from their dorms and were staying at the Kimmel Center in Washington square.

Leonardo DiCaprio and Victoria’s Secret model Erin Heatherton call it quits LEONARDO DiCaprio is back on the market.
The perennial bachelor and his latest very hot girlfriend, Victoria’s Secret

everything! DiCaprio and heatherton coupled up late last year following the actor’s split from Blake Lively, and that coming shortly
Lady Gaga: Adele is bigger than I am, both in size and confidence
WELL, nobody was talking about it!
Lady Gaga, who has made no bones about the fact that she’s gained some weight this year, wondered aloud in an interview with Stylist UK why no one ever mentions Adele’s bigger-thanyour-average-stick-figure size. “When I heard [her weight gain] was on the news, where they talk about wars, the economy crashing and the election—I just thought, ‘This is f---king ridiculous.’ I mean, what kind of example is that to a young girl sitting at home?” Gaga said. “I thought, Well, I don’t really care if they think I’m fat,’ because, quite honestly, I did gain about 30 pounds,” the Born This Way artist continued. “Adele is bigger than me, how come nobody says anything about it? She’s so wonderful and I think her confidence is something I have to match. She has set the bar very high for a lot of women. I need to be a confident woman and just say
politically active things when I can that are helpful to young people.” On the flip side, Gaga just got the Internet chattering about her recent weight loss by going as “Princess high the Cannabis Queen” for halloween. Or, more simply, she was topless weed. But even though that
look was perfectly flattering, she insisted to Stylist UK that nudity is still where it’s at for her. “That is most me— when I’m sighing out the whole day into a warm bath,” Gaga said. “So I guess what I’m saying is when I’m wearing the bathtub. The bathtub outfit.”
after his split from model Bar Refaeli. Before Refaeli, Gisele Bündchen was DiCaprio’s main squeeze for a good four years. he and heatherton did the romantic-adventure thing in Mexico in January, with DiCaprio’s mom
Irmelin even joining them on a zip-lining excursion. But long-distance love is tough, and DiCaprio, who spent a large chunk of time shooting The Great Gatsby in Australia last year, was logging a lot of hours in New Orleans this spring filming Djan-
go Unchained. The source adds that the pair amicably called it quits a few weeks ago and there’s no ill will between them. And there’s always latenight texting and ambiguous tweeting, just in case there is.

The male bartenders, not wanting to outdone, set fire to the bar and also did a flaming bottle juggling number, much to the delight of the guests. talk about a party revolution in Durianburg, and its on a tuesday! Of course more reasons to party on tuesdays would be the buy-one-take-one drinks and the Fat tuesdays membership card that allows members to bring their own bottle and consume it without a cover charge as long as they consume P500 per head. so time to change your drinking habits, drink early, party early, and make every tuesday Fat.

Japeth picked in NBA D-League J
APeTh Aguilar took one more step closer to becoming the first Filipino in the NBA D-League after being picked in the seventh round Saturday. The athletic 6-foot-9 forward was picked 109th overall by the Santa Cruz Warriors, the D-League affiliate team of the Golden State Warriors. Aguilar, who spent three seasons at with NCAA Division I school Western Kentucky where he saw little playing time, was a member of the Talk ‘N Text Tropang Texters last season. Prior to that, he spent two years as part of the SMART-Gilas Pilipinas national team. The Warriors, who were formerly known as the Dakota Wizards, curiously count another former Talk ‘N Text, ex-import Mo Baker, on its roster. Aguilar was “relieved and happy“ after his selection, his Philippine-based agent said. The 6-9 Aguilar was made the 13th selection in the seventh round by the Golden State Warriors’ D-League affiliate, just the latest step in his bid to become the first Filipino to play in the NBA. “he’s happy and he’s relieved nang malaman nga niyang na-pick na siya ng Santa Cruz,” Aguilar’s Philippine-based agent Marvin espiritu told Spin. ph after an overseas conversation with the player. While a spot on the
Santa Cruz roster isn’t guaranteed considering he was so late in the draft, Aguilar promised to give his best as he travels to California in a few days to attend the Warrior’s training camp. “Mas lumaki katawan niya. Wala na din daw kasi siyang ginagawa at iniisip sa States kundi basketball,” said espiritu. espiritu added that the former Ateneo Blue eagle and West Kentucky alumnus had been actively joining pickup games in Chicago, where his family is currently based. espiritu said Aguilar is eager to put up a solid performance in the training camp, knowing this will be his only legitimate shot at entering the NBA via the backdoor. The PBA is farthest in his mind, the agent added. “Di niya actually iniisip ang PBA sa ngayon. he’s very focused sa NBA dream niya. Kapag nagustuhan ng Santa Cruz and ipapakita niya, then saka na siya bibigyan ng offer,” said espiritu, who also handles some FilAm players in the PBA like Chris Lutz of Petron and Jason Deutchman of Globalport. While Aguilar still has a small window of opportunity to realize his NBA dream, espiritu said Talk ‘ N Text is ready to accept him with open arms should he eventually come home.
Filipino basketball star Japeth Aguilar was picked on the 7th round of the NBA D-League by the Sta. Cruz Warriors.
Knicks storm Heat N
eW YORK — Carmelo Anthony had 30 points and 10 rebounds, and the Knicks gave suffering New Yorkers something to cheer with a 104-84 victory over the Miami heat in their storm-delayed season opener Friday night (Saturday, Manila time). In the first sporting event in New York since Superstorm Sandy, the Knicks dominated a game the heat players weren’t sure should even be played with the city still so devastated. But the Knicks hoped they could provide a distraction for a few hours, and fans who were able to watch surely loved what they saw from a team that could barely compete with Miami last season. Steve Novak, a non-factor against the heat in last season’s playoffs, added 17 points off the bench and Raymond Felton had 14 points and nine assists to begin his second stint with the Knicks. LeBron James scored
23 points for the heat, so impressive in a season-opening victory over Boston on Tuesday but never really in this one. Dwyane Wade, who thought the game should be postponed, finished with 15 points and Chris Bosh had 12 points and 11 rebounds. The heat beat the
Knicks in five games in last season’s first round, and at least for one night New York appears to have closed the gap on the champs. But the focus surrounding this one had little to do with basketball. even Knicks players weren’t sure what kind of crowd to expect with many
New Yorkers in such bad shape and perhaps unable to travel to the game with the city’s transit system crippled. But Madison Square Garden was packed and lively from well before the tip right through their loud cheers when Rasheed Wallace, retired the last two seasons, entered with about three minutes left.
Harden fires 45 in Rockets win
A
TLANTA, Georgia – James harden, traded a week ago from NBA runner-up Oklahoma City, scored a career-high 45 points on Friday to power the houston Rockets over host Atlanta 109-102. harden, last year’s NBA Sixth Man of the Year as the league’s top reserve player, poured in 37 points in his Rockets debut two nights earlier in a victory at Detroit and made his second houston start even more spectacular. A member of the US Olympic gold medal squad, harden made 14for-19 shots from the field and sank 15-of-17 free throws while grabbing seven rebounds. he
scored 18 points in the fourth quarter, when he was 12-of-13 from the line. Asian-American star Jeremy Lin, the NBA’s first US player of Taiwan and Chinese heritage, added 21 points, 10 rebounds and seven assists while Omer Asik pulled down 19 rebounds and Marcus Morris scored 17 points off the bench. The Rockets had not won their first two games of a season since 2008. Atlanta was led by 22 points from reserve Lou Williams while Josh Smith had 18 points and 10 rebounds for the hawks in their season opener.

Lakers go down 0-3 L
OS ANGeLeS — Chris Paul had 18 points and 15 assists, Jamal Crawford scored 21 points and the Los Angeles Clippers beat the Los Angeles Lakers 105-95 Friday night (Saturday, Manila time) to send their Staples Center co-tenants to a 0-3 start. Kobe Bryant scored 40 points and Dwight howard had 13 points and eight rebounds while battling constant foul trouble for the Lakers, who are 0-3 for the first time since 1978 and just the fourth time in franchise history. Steve Nash sat out with a bruised left leg for the Lakers, who have followed up their 0-8 preseason with three losses in four days. Blake Griffin scored 15 points before fouling out and Caron Butler had 14 for the Clippers, who pulled away steadily in the second half. The Clippers snapped a nine-game “road” losing
streak against the Lakers dating to April 12, 2007. While the Clippers celebrated, the pro-Lakers crowd reacted to another loss with angry shouts piercing the silence, much of it profane criticism of coach Mike Brown and his new Princeton-based offense. Bryant attempted to put the Lakers on his shoulders in the second half, scoring 26 points out of sets that resembled the Lakers’ old offenses. The Clippers stayed comfortably ahead with big second halves from Paul and Griffin. Nash’s absence was only one reason Paul had the same number of assists as the Lakers, with Nash replacement Steve Blake managing just two assists in 38 minutes before fouling out in the final minute. Paul had his 10th assist shortly after halftime and led the entire Lakers roster after three quarters, with 14 to the Lakers’ 12. The Clippers pulled
away in the third quarter, making an 18-5 run with nine points from Griffin to take an 82-67 lead into the fourth quarter. The LakDwight Howard had 13 points and eight rebounds for the loaded Lakers, who lost eight games in the preseason and have dropped all three of their games in the tournament proper. AP
ers trimmed it to 91-83 with five minutes to play, but Crawford and Matt Barnes kept the Clippers ahead with big buckets.
