AmAGe to infrastructure brought by typhoon pablo has reached p530 million, the Department of public Works and Highways regional office said in its recent advisory. DpWH attributed the cost of infrastructure damage to collapsed bridges and damage to national roads in the provinces of Davao oriental and Compostela Valley—the two hardest-hit provinces in the region rarely hit by a storm. According to mariano Alquiza, DpWH regional director, their initial assessment showed that most of the damages were caused by massive landslides and heavy flooding. the DpWH report list-
ed the destroyed bridges as Gov. teodoro palma Gil (manurigao Bridge) in Caraga and the Lumao Bridge in Cateel, both in Davao oriental. Damage to the palma Gil Bridge, which had all of its seven spans collapsed, was estimated at p371.6-million including the cost of bridge reconstruction while the Lumao Bridge was damaged to the tune of p75.5-million. Alquiza said other bridges affected by the typhoon were tarago, Katipunan, mapawa, Camansi, talian, Ludag and mayo all in Compostela Valley. mayo Bridge located at Brgy. Andap, new Bataan, Compostela Valley was completely washed out.

Fight trafficking, families urged
F
AmILIes and communities were urged to actively take part in the efforts of combating human trafficking. During the observance of the International Day Against trafficking in persons on Wednesday, malou Bermudo, chief of the Davao City social services and Development office (CssDo), stressed the crucial role of families and communities including the barangay councils to help prevent the residents from falling prey to traffickers. Bermudo said fami-
lies and the communities should be well-informed and should understand the danger of human trafficking which mostly victimized young women and children for commercial sexual exploitation and forced labor. “prevention should start from the family and communities. We should make it a way of life,” she told the philippine Information Agency in an interview during the culmination program of the International Day Against tIp which held at people’s

temporary water treatment system was installed while a medical team from the philippine Army has been deployed in pablo-hit Baganga town to immediately address the urgent need for potable water of the typhoon survivors. elements of the 67th Infantry Battalion and the 525th engineer Battalion installed the temporary water purification station with a distributing capacity of 900 gallons a day in embar-
cadero, Centro in Baganga in Davao oriental. the purifying system will cater to the water needs of about 200 residents in Baganga town in Davao oriental, one of the three hardest hit areas in the province. “the water purification system hopes to provide clean water in evacuation areas so we can prevent the outbreak of waterborne diseases”, said Lt. Chester ordonio of the 525th engineer Battalion.
the philippine Army also dispatched a team of medical personnel to Baganga to beef-up medical teams from the local municipal and provincial health offices. the team will cover the most devastated Barangays of Ban-ao and Kinablangan. Joint teams of the 67th Infantry Battalion and the municipal police station escorted relief teams of Baganga to distribute food, medicines and water in Barangays
Binondo, Batiano, mikit, Campawan, Batawan and mahan-ub. Rehabilitation of Baganga’s communications system also got a shot in the arm with a team from smart philippines and thailand-based telecom sans Frontieres based already in the said town to install a local internet capability and ensure connectivity of the ICp. Residents were earlier given free access to call relatives by the said providers. (AsA)
“Davao Light apologizes for the inconvenience of these scheduled power interruptions. But, it will exert all efforts to restore electric service as scheduled or earlier. However, there may be instances where restoration may extend beyond the schedule due to unavoidable circumstances,” the DLpC press statement said. Davao Light’s supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (sCADA) operates via remote control switches in substations and along the distribution lines. Hence, DLpC explains that repair works and restorations of power supply are implemented at the barest minimum.
n times of natural disasters, it is not just human beings who suffer. Animals do too. Like humans, companion pets such as cats, dogs and farm animals were also rendered homeless when typhoon pablo devastated several towns in Compostela Valley, Davao oriental, Agusan del sur and other provinces. Aside from sharing spaces with their masters in cramped evacuation centers and makeshift tents, they also share the limited food aid. Vilma Islaw, 48, of barangay samuag, monkayo, Compostela Valley , told mindanews that their house was destroyed by strong winds brought by the typhoon on December 4. Islaw said they were not able to save most of their belongings, but they were able to save
their eight-year old dog named miong, an asong pinoy or Aspin. “We could not just leave miong because he has been with us for so long, my two children love him as well as my granddaughter,” she said. the family, like many others, has been depending on food aid a week after the storm, with Islaw noting, “We are sharing whatever food we have to our pet.” Unlike Islaw who was able to take her dog to the evacuation center, 81-year old portia Villocino almost lost her 10 dogs when flood hit their village. Four of her dogs are two-month old puppies. Villocino, a former village chief of samuag, told mindanews that she had feared that her dogs and their other farm animals may have drowned in the flood.
DLPC sets switching power I interruptions on Dec.16 D
AVAo Light & power Company will conduct 30-minute switching power interruptions on December 16, sunday, affecting customers in the northern part of its franchise. Communication officer Ross Luga said that the scheduled outages are necessary to conduct repair works on a broken conductor strand at Coca plant in Bajada and replacement of four 69kV wood poles at mana Davao. the 30-minute switching power interruptions will take place from 1:30 Am to 2:00 Am for the transferring of loads to nearby substations. meanwhile, normaliza-
tion or return of loads back to its normal set up will take place from 9:30 Am to 10:00 Am. Affected by these power interruptions are those connected in Davao Light’s R. Castillo, pampanga and panacan substations. particularly affected areas are those from Bajada power plant going to Lanang up to corner Guadalupe subd., including its internal areas and portion of Cabaguio Avenue, Leon Garcia and Lapu-Lapu streets in Agdao and some portions of Barrio obrero and sta. Ana areas. Consumers residing in Arroyo street up to Belisario Village along R. Castillo street including
Barangay san Juan, Ubalde in Agdao, will also experience these outages. Also to experience are consumers along mamay Road up to Cabantian and some portions of Cabantian-Indangan boundary and Communal including milan near Buhangin underpass going to the Commission on Audit (CoA) office along philippines-Japan Friendship Highway. Consumers along Lanang, pampanga, sasa and panacan DpWH going to Ilang and malagamot areas, and those along panacan Diversion road up to La Verna & CoA Buhangin will also be affected by these service disruptions.

DSWD deploys debriefers, camp coordinators to typhoon-hit towns A
s part of its relief and rehabilitation interventions, the social welfare department has started deploying social worker debriefers and evacuation camp coordinators to the municipalities of Baganga, Cateel, Boston, new Bataan, and monkayo to assist local government units. Director priscilla n. Razon said, “our workers were sent out beginning December 7 and will be working by teams providing stress debriefing, counselling, guidance and all to the internally displaced persons (IDps) inside and outside evacuation centers. We immediately positioned our workers to help relieve, restore and maintain the dignity of the physically and emotionally-wounded IDps who have suffered tremendously.”
Camp coordinators are tasked to help organize camp management committees, distribute family access cards, maintain order in the camp, set up work brigade, conduct focus group discussion, coordinate with local leaders, among others. meanwhile, as early as December 6, DsWD has also fielded engineers and community organizers to conduct ocular survey and subsequently oversee construction of the initial 81 bunkhouses in the typhoon-beaten provinces -Davao oriental and Compostela Valley. Construction of bunkhouses in Cateel town has already started second week of December. the bunkhouses are set to be functional before end of December. [DsWD/Carmela Cadigal-Duron]

Why were the emergency telecom kits not sent to Mindanao?
A
t the Incident Command post inside the Department of public Works and Highways compound in Baganga, Davao oriental, everyone was excited on tuesday noon as volunteers from the telecoms sans Frontieres (tsF or telecoms Without Borders) were setting up an emergency telecommunication system that would allow them to make calls and send e-mails from where typhoon pablo made landfall dawn of December 4. “mamaya baka may internet na ako” (We will be able to connect by internet soon),” a smiling Lt. Col. Krishnamurti mortela, chief of the 67th Infantry Battalion, said. It has been a week since the telecommunications systems broke down as typhoon pablo demolished not only houses and agricultural crops but also towers of telecommunication service providers. tsF’s sebastien Latouille told mindanews residents could also avail of free calls when the system was set up before nightfall of tuesday. Latouille, a French national, was with tylor, a Canadian who teaches at the Asian Institute of technology in Bangkok, while another team of volunteers was setting up the
same system in Cateel. the tsF teams arrived in the philippines from their regional base in Bangkok on December 2, two days before typhoon pablo (international name Bopha) was expected to make landfall in mindanao, to coordinate with local authorities and response entities. pablo made landfall here. At 4 a.m. of December 4, the eye of the typhoon was located, based on satellite and surface data, at 40 kilometers east of the eastern coast of Davao oriental, packing maximum sustained winds of 175 kph near the center and gustiness of up to 210 kph, moving at 26 kph, the philippine Atmospheric Geophysical and Astronomical services Administration (pAGAsA) reported. the tsF team arrived in Davao oriental on monday, set up the satellite phone by monday evening and the internet by tuesday evening. Latouille says they’ve not only deployed several tsF teams to the philippines during typhoons but have actually provided emergency telecommunications kits and trained emergency providers at the national Disaster Risk Reduction and management Council (nDRRmC) on setting up emergency
telecommunications in disaster areas. emergency telecom kits An emergency telecommunications kit, according to him, consists of one satellite modem for internet, one satellite phone, one laptop, one printer, power supply with batteries. “I am not sure if the kit has a scanner but the basics are there,” Latouille said. Latouille said 10 emergency telecommunications kits were provided to the nDRRmC: two in manila and eight spread across the typhoon-prone regions in Luzon and the Visayas. no kit was provided mindanao, an island referred to before typhoon pablo, as “relatively typhoon-free.” Why the kits were not deployed to mindanao from either manila, other parts of Luzon or the Visayas either before or immediately after pablo battered the provinces of Davao oriental, Compostela Valley and portions of Davao del norte, Agusan del sur and surigao del sur, baffles Latouille. there are trained personnel at the nDRRmC and its regional offices who can set up the emergency telecommunications system. “We donated some kits to nDDRRmC. I do not
know why they did not deploy them,” Latouille told mindanews. mindanews sent nDRRmC chief, Undersecretary Benito Ramos, a text message on December 13, asking why the kits were not deployed to mindanao. Ramos has not responded as of 11:30 a.m. A report posted on the website of ReliefWeb, a specialized digital service of the United nations office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs, said tsF launched a series of trainings for local and international emergency response organizations in the philippines, the first held in manila on march 21 to 25 last year. the training sessions were funded by the Humanitarian Aid Department of the european Commission and were part of the emergency program set up after typhoon megi (philippine name: Juan) hit the philippines on october 18, 2010. trained the tsF conducted three week-long courses on “emergency telecommunications and focus on the equipment (37 kits) provided by tsF” to regions and provinces affected by typhoons Ketsana (ondoy) and parma (pepeng) in 2009. Davao Norte eyed as venue for 2015 BIMP-EAGA games
D
AVAo del norte Governor Rodolfo del Rosario is bent on hosting the 2015 Brunei, Indonesia, malaysia, philippines-east Asean Growth Area Friendship (BImp-eAGA) Games by 2015. “We want to rally everyone for 2015---the time of mindanao will come,” del Rosario said, confident that the province will bag the sports event with the completion of the state-ofthe-art Davao del norte sports and Cultural Center which had its soft opening on December 12, more or less a year after its groundbreaking. the philippines has hosted the BImp-eAGA Friendship Games three times—General santos City in 1996, puerto princesa in palawan in 2003 and soKsARGen (south Cotabato, sarangani and General santos City) in 2012. Del Rosario said the sports Center is already 95 percent completed with only the rubberized oval track up for completion. Work on the rubberized track was fasttracked Wednesday afternoon after the soft opening since the province was enjoying a sunny weather. “We will be hosting the pRIsAA (private school Athletic Association) in January and the DAVRAA
(Davao Region Athletic Association) by February next year,” he said. He said the 10-hectare p243-million sports Complex is the first in the region and it boasts of a grandstand with fiber glass chairs that can seat up to 5,000 people, a rubberized oval track, a football field, a standard olympic swimming pool a warm-up pool and flood lights to accommodate night games. “this is a significant day because there will be no other December 12, 2012 or 12/12/12/ throughout eternity,” he said, referring to the day of the opening of the sports Complex. He added it is a magnificent rally point to drum up available resources as the people race against time. Del Rosario said that through hardwork and dedication, “we were able to bring life to a once-barren place.” He recognized the efforts of tagum City mayor Rey Uy “for putting tagum City in the international map,” and said “I hope greenery will complement the infrastructure here with the help of mayor Uy.” Del Rosario admitted that the completion of the sports Complex has haunted him day and night from Day 1 of its construction.[LAC]

Rare cat filmed t up close in Borneo

Missionaries say lessons learned from ‘Sendong’ helped save lives
o
ne of the world’s most rare and elusive cats, the sunda clouded leopard of malaysia, has been filmed up close. A biologist holidaying in malaysia has captured unique footage of a young female leopard resting in the forest. previously, this top predator has only been filmed fleetingly and at a distance, with the first wild footage to be made public captured in 2010. the sunda clouded leopard was only discovered to be a distinct species in 2007. experts say the footage is extraordinary, believing it to be the only close-up film of the cat in the wild. Clouded leopards are the smallest of the socalled big cats, living in southeast Asia.
they are not true leopards, being more distantly related to leopards, snow leopards, lions and tigers than those big cats are to each other.
For many years, experts thought there was a single species of clouded leopard. then in 2007, mr Andreas Wilting of the
British research team in Antarctica has launched a long-awaited project to hunt for life in a lake hidden beneath the ice-sheet. A team of 12 scientists and engineers has begun work at remote Lake ellsworth. they are using a high-pressure hose and sterilised water at near boiling point to blast a passage through more than two miles of ice. the aim is to analyse ice waters isolated for up to 500,000 years. the process of opening a bore-hole is expected to last five days and will be followed by a rapid sampling operation before the ice refreezes. Lake ellsworth is one of several hundred lakes known to exist beneath the ice-sheet - its waters kept just above freezing temperature by the warmth of the rocks below. It is thought that the lake has been cut off from the outside world for long enough to raise the possibility that microbial life has evolved in unique ways. this will be the first attempt to use highly sterilised equipment to collect samples of water and sediment from a body of water so deep and iso-
lated for so long. the aim of the project is to investigate the limits of where life is possible so preventing any contamination has been integral to the design of the equipment. Delicate work Chief scientist prof martin siegert told the BBC that “everything has to be done in ultra clean conditions.” “We don’t want to contaminate this pristine environment - and unless we keep the experiment very clean, we’re likely just to measure the things that we bring down us with, which would be pointless.” the engineer in charge of the hot water drilling, Andy tait, described the operation as “huge but delicate”. “Although hot-water drilling technology has been used extensively by scientists in the past, this is the first time we’ve ever attempted to go through 3km of solid ice - this will be the deepest borehole ever made this way. “We’ve fired up the boilers to heat the water to 90°C. the water pressure coming out of the hose will be around 2,000 psI - 15 to 20 times more powerful than the kind you wash your car with. “It is the most effective
way to obtain rapid, clean access to Lake ellsworth.” the next two days will be spent drilling out a ‘chamber’ the size of a caravan below the surface of the ice-sheet so that a reservoir of sterilised water is ready to prevent any lake water rising up into the borehole. prof siegert said that exploring for life in such an extreme environment - in pitch-black conditions under high pressure beneath the ice-sheet - could open up possibilities for life on other worlds such as Jupiter’s moon europa. “the experiment we’re doing is very similar to an experiment one might do to see whether there is life on europa. “We know europa has an icy crust and an ocean beneath it. “If there’s life on europa it’ll be living in a very similar way to life in Lake ellsworth with total darkness, lots of pressure and using chemical processes rather than sunlight to power biological processes.” If all goes according to plan in Antarctica, the first results should be announced next week potentially a landmark moment in polar science. He Rural missionary sisters of mary (Rmsm) on Wednesday said that lessons learned from 2011’s “sendong” have helped saved many lives in northern mindanao, thanks to various workshops held concerning disaster management. “All of our workshops on disaster risk reduction really worked. the people were prepared,” Rmsm northern mindanao coordinator sister maria Famita somogod, said. she added that the government really learned its lesson from “sendong” as two days before “pablo” was scheduled to hit the country, various government agencies and units, were already starting to issue advisories, in radio and television, instructing people to go to higher and safer ground. “the municipal disaster teams started working. officials closely monitored the water lev-
els of the rivers, something that did not happen before,” somogod added. But this time, she said residents were ready, as were municipal and neighborhood officials, who had evacuated those at risk. “the night before pablo arrived, we went to some of the most vulnerable areas to make sure people got out. they had already gone to the evacuation centers. they were safe. so no one died. Although some houses were damaged, the people had gone to the evacuation centers,” somogod said. “sendong” devastated Iligan and Cagayan de oro Cities, killing more than 1,200 people on Dec. 16, 2011. Last Dec. 6, somogod and other church workers delivered food packages to some 40 families in Antorio as they cleaned up their homes. [pnA]

Forty percent of mobile phones sold worldwide are smartphones Filipinos the world’s 4th fastest growing mobile internet users
A Smartphone use in the Philippines continues to surge, making Filipinos as the world’s 4thfastest growing mobile internet users worldwide.
p p R o x I m At e Ly 40% of all mobile phones sold worldwide in the third quarter of 2012 were smartphones, compared to around 30% for the full year in 2011, according to ericsson’s mobility Report. the report also revealed that mobile data traffic doubled between the third quarter of 2011 and third quarter of 2012, and is expected to grow 12 times between 2012 and 2018, with total mobile subscriptions expected to hit 6.6 billion by the end of 2012, and 9.3 billion by 2018. “mobility is becoming an increasingly significant part of our daily lives with the availability of smartphones and tablets that have changed the way we use the internet. We always have devices within arm’s reach, allowing us instant access to information, entertainment and social interaction,” said Douglas Gilstrap, senior Vice president and Head of strategy at ericsson. China leads worldwide in net additions with 38 million subscriptions, followed by Brazil with 9 million, Indonesia with 7 million, and the philippines with 5 million, making Filipinos the world’s fourth fastest growing mobile internet users. Keeping pace with the growing trend of mobile internet use in the country and the increasing affordability of smartphones, Globe telecom remains bullish with its mobile data business by launching relevant and innovative offers for its subscribers. In partnership with Google, Globe became the world’s first telecom operator to offer access to the World Wide Web and select Google services on internet-enabled mobile phones without any data charges via Free Zone. With Free Zone, Globe prepaid and tm subscribers get easy and instant access to Google search, Gmail, and Google+ on their feature phones and smartphone without any cost via http://libre. ph. With the new mobile browsing offer, Globe extends the unique experi-
ence of being online all the time even to its most budget-conscious subscribers. Globe also pioneered the mobile data market with its mobile browsing plans that use megabytes or mBs, a unit that measures data in internet-related transactions. through Globe powersurf mB, subscribers get bulk megabytes (mB) of mobile data, consumable per kilobyte (KB), to surf the Internet on their mobile devices. Using KBs or mBs in mobile surfing does not look at the time spent online, but on specific mobile browsing activities a user does such as e-mail, social networking, photo uploading, or video streaming, making it more affordable to surf on the mobile phone, totally eliminating the risk of billshock. Daily and monthly variants are available depending on a subscriber’s need. “the smartphone boom has definitely arrived the philippines. this year, we have seen tremendous uptake in the purchase and use of smartphones, giving more Filipinos access to the World Wide Web,” said Jenny Granada-echevarria, Head of Globe mobile Data services. “With our offers that give more value for money, Globe further enriches the mobile browsing experience, empowering more smartphone owners to maximize their devices and enjoy its full features, further driving smartphone explosion in the country.” For the first nine months of 2012, Globe mobile data revenues reached p24.4 billion, or 6% higher than last year. this was driven in part by mobile data browsing, which sustained its robust growth momentum, generating p2.2 billion, almost 55% better than the same period last year. Joerg Krahnert, managing director of leading mobile platform service provider netbuiscits, also shared that mobile users will surpass desktop users globally by 2014 and the Web will be accessed through mobile four times than via pCs by 2015.

With Davao City’s inability to host the miniature olympics-type competition, the philippine sports Commission was forced to transfer the venue elsewhere. Hence, the Games returned to where it was first held in Gen. santos City. However, despite Davao City giving up its rights to host the event to Gen. santos City, it did not in effect relinquish its privilege to be part of mindanao’s athletic contingent. Lo and behold, the Games were held this week in Gen. santos without Davao City taking part. Were Davao City and other areas in mindanao snubbed by the philippines-mindanao organizers? According to the Davao City sports Development office which is under the City mayor’s office, no communication was sent to them by organizers. Who is really in charge of the Games now, the psC or mindanao Development Authority? When you are tired of the pressures of the world; when there is dryness to your spirituality, and you are looking for something so much bigger than your already larger-than-life persona, you turn to that wellspring of strength and renewal that the mother graciously offers and has always offered. Given such a demanding life, it is wonderful to be born again into a new one where everything is rosy and prosperous. never mind that sacrifice has played an important part in your life and made you who you are. It is just wonderful to be on a constant high in this new faith you seek. nevertheless, do not forget that the sacred is present in the quiet sacraments that have been handed down through the ages. there is so much richness, truth, and profundity to the faith that has embraced you since your childhood. you need not search far, especially if this means dishonoring your mother. you have already gone far in your fight for worldly success and have given our nation so much pride. you need not go farther to be born again in another faith. you need only to be renewed in the faith that has sustained our nation. that age-old gesture you used to bless yourself with may not seem significant just as one second before the bell is not significant.

The Mayan curse of December
He first 12 days of December came to a past yesterday and the mayan prediction of the world apocalypse came in bundles of tragedies – a trio of them – for the philippines. to the many who perished in typhoon pablo, indeed, it was the end of the world for them. For the families of the more than 800 missing, it is as if the whole weight of the world descended upon them. To the terrified, and then heartbroken, fans of manny pacquiao who saw him collapse like a fallen timber in stunning knockout defeat to Juan manuel marquez, it was like the world of boxing ended with his loss. then on the night of the 12th, singapore ended the hopes of the philippine football nation to barge into the suzuki Cup finals and win its first international competition title in the post-World War II era of this side of the world’s largest spectator sports. somebody mentioned triple whammy about two decades ago. The first 12 days of December 2012
brought a trio of cascading tragedy and losses these might be what the mayan meant when they predicted that the end of the world will coincide with the end of the mayan calendar on 12.21.12, nine days after the philippine Azkals lost to the singapore Lions, 0-1. December 21 is the day the sun will align with the center of our galaxy, as it does every year. It is also called the winter solstice, the start of the year when the night will be longer than the day (Its opposite is the summer solstice – June 21 this year - when the day was as long as the night). the world did not end in June. there is no reason to believe the mayan prediction will come true. the world will not end for those
who survived the fury of pablo. And as pacquiao indicated, his sorry loss to marquez will not be the end of his boxing career. neither will the defeat of the philippine Azkals mark the death of philippine football. But for the 12 days of December, it was as if the world ended on many of us. Ask the grieving and scarred survivors of pablo’s wrath. Look into the teary eyes and anguished faces of the mothers and wives of the missing fishermen of General santos City. Just read how pacquiao’s childhood friend Buboy Fernandez, usually cool and collected, simply exploded and kicked a photographer who was taking pictures of his fallen friend. And look at the crest-fallen faces of the color analysts of the philippine-Singapore semifinal match in the suzuki Cup. they have the world ended written all over the(ir) faces. But the world did not end there. the world will move on. so will the rest of us. [edwin G. espejo writes for www. asiancorrespondent.com]
Pacquiao is serving three masters
A
FteR the pacquiao-marquez 3, he went home in General santos City a different man. He started holding daily prayer meeting with his family, friends and supporters inside his mansion. He stopped squandering his boxing earnings to late night gambling, womanizing, cockfighting and drinking spree. those who are truly concerned about his future and career rejoiced. But...only for a moment. they notice that this time, pacquiao is throwing away his money not on vices but on pastors who, just like his shadow, follow him wherever he is. one of his friends said “How I wish I were a pastor.” Bane... pacquiao has been addicted and blinded by his newfound passion. He finds delight preaching before an adoring crowd. pastors do come in droves to his mansion and their number is increasing each day. they ask for almost everything – from Ipad to service vehicle, from plane tickets and free Las Vegas hotel room to free tickets for his fight. one pastor even went as far as asking for a holster and a handgun then joined the marksmanship and gun proficiency training intended only for pacquiao’s security escorts. During his preparation for the Bradley fight, a pastor from Sarangani asked for two hotel rooms for his wife and three children. “members of team pacquiao were jampacked like sardines inside one hotel room while the pastors enjoyed the comfort of being in a spacious hotel room,” the source said. Another pastor abandoned his flock in Baguio City just to follow pacquiao wherever he is. they take a bath, sleep and eat inside pacquiao’s mansion as if it is their own house. pastors have become a powerful clique
( Conclusion ) ANAlYSIS
By AquileS Z. Zonio in pacquiao’s life. When they speak, pacquiao listens. now, they started to cross the boundary line between religion and politics. they are fond of meddling into pacquiao’s political affairs, earning the ire of the lawmaker’s political leaders and advisers. Religion is not an issue in pacquiao’s shocking loss to marquez. Blame it on a coterie of pastors whose presence is more of a bane than boon to pacquiao’s boxing career. even at times when pacquiao is already resting after a rigid training, insensitive pastors would troop to his room and disturb him up to the wee hours of the night. If they love the pacman, they should not disturb him while resting and they should respect his privacy as a person. they are taking advantage of, if not abusing, pacquiao’s kindness and generosity. they made the pinoy boxing sensation a virtual milking cow. Durability issue... Hall of Fame coach Freddie Roach declared that the team pacquiao changed his ward’s training regimen. the total number of rounds of sparring was reduced and several other exercises were eliminated. no wonder, the old manny pacquiao was gone. His ability and durability to absorb solid and bigger punches vanished. In the past, pacman had endured several bigger punches just like the one which knocked him down in the second round of his fourth encounter with marquez. no question about his speed and power. the manny pacquiao of old, who withstood the barrage of hard punches from much bigger opponents like Ricky Hatton, oscar Dela Hoya, miguel Cotto, Joshua Clottey, shane mosley and Antonio margari-
to, was missing during the pacquiao-marquez 4. the team pacquiao must review what went wrong in his last strength and conditioning program. pacquiao is faster, stronger and younger in age than marquez. But marquez was a more disciplined fighter. He managed to overcome his age and other limitations by adopting a disciplined lifestyle. With or without a scheduled fight, Marquez continues his strength and endurance training. Gift for God... After the knockout defeat of his son, a visibly irked mommy Dionisia asked the pastors, “oh, ano ngayon? nasaan ang inyong himala!” mommy D bared that she offered the pacman to God when he nearly died of illness. “manny was just two years old when he nearly died of diarrhea. For three days, he experienced vomiting and excessive bowel movement. I was about to give up,” Dionisia claimed. then a friend advised her to offer his son to God and pray “Lord Jesus Christ” 700 times. “I was breastfeeding Bobby pacquiao who was still a baby that time. But I made the sacrifice just to save the life of Manny. A few hours after doing the prayer, manny opened his eyes and asked for porridge,” mommy D said in Visayan dialect. she said she will gather all her six children to a meeting when pacman arrives. “We will decide as a family. We will convince manny to go back to his Catholic faith. He was born a Catholic, he should die a Catholic,” she said. According to her, pacman is deeply religious and that she is hurting that pastors managed to sway him. “these pastors are just taking advantage of my son!” a furious celebrity mom said.

America’s second chance at global leadership ( Conclusion ) OPINION By Frederick kempe
t
he nIC also focuses on technology-driven “individual empowerment” as the first of four megatrends that will reduce poverty and double the size of the global middle class through 2030. the report calls it a “tectonic shift” that means “for the first time, a majority of the world’s population will not be impoverished.” this is not a guarantee of a move toward greater democracy or western values, but middle class populations make greater demands for accountable, responsible, transparent governance. Individual empowerment, however, has a darker side that means individuals and small groups will have greater access to lethal and disruptive technologies, “enabling them to perpetrate large-scale violence – a capability formerly the monopoly of states.” the nIC, which serves as the intelligence community’s center for medium and long-term analysis, does not have a mandate to recommend policy from its findings. that is left to organizations like the Atlantic Council, a Washington-based think tank and public policy group. (Disclosure: I am president of the council and, in its non-government capacity, it has convened many of the global workshops that contributed to the nIC report). the Atlantic Council’s report – “envisioning 2030: Us strategy for a post-Western World,” proposes an approach that starts with president obama recognizing the magnitude of the moment and the likelihood that his actions now will have consequences that will be felt for generations. president obama has been right to focus on “nation-building at home.” U.s. economic and innovative strength is the foundation for any global leadership role. However, even a revitalized U.s. economy won’t be enough to secure the future. the U.s., with less absolute power, must act more creatively and collaboratively. What one already sees in the Arab Awakening in the middle east is that national power will compete with new, multifaceted and amorphous networks – enabled by technology and instant communication. At the same time, the U.s. must safeguard its longest standing alliance, nAto, and its most important strategic asset, europe, by helping its allies manage the euro zone crisis while promoting a transatlantic free trade, investment and economic cooperation agreement. the obama administration must also deepen U.s.-Chinese cooperation, the most important single factor shaping the international system. A broad array of issues are at stake, such as multilateral institutions, the global financial system, the nuclear future, cyber security, climate change and global resource scarcity. the obama administration also has an immediate need to address instability in the greater middle east, from north Africa to pakistan, where potential threats include nuclear-armed regional powers, failed nuclear states and terrorists armed with weapons of mass destruction. perhaps the most powerful message to president obama from the nIC report is the following: Getting re-elected was the easy part. How he manages this juncture in human history, a much more difficult task, will determine his legacy.

AVAo Light & power Company will conduct 30-minute switching power interruptions on December 16, sunday, affecting customers in the northern part of its franchise. Communication officer Ross Luga said that the scheduled outages are necessary to conduct repair works on a broken conductor strand at Coca plant in Bajada and replacement of four 69kV wood poles at mana Davao. the 30-minute switching power interruptions will take place from 1:30 Am to 2:00 Am for the transferring of loads to nearby substations. meanwhile, normalization or return of loads back to its normal set up will take place from 9:30 Am to 10:00 Am. Affected by these power interruptions are those connected in Davao Light’s R. Castillo, pampanga and panacan substations. particularly affected are those from Bajada power plant going to Lanang up to corner Guadalupe subd., including its internal areas & portion of Cabaguio Avenue, Leon Garcia & Lapu-Lapu sts. Agdao and some portions of Bo. obrero & sta. Ana areas. Customers from Ar-
royo st. up to Belisario Village along R. Castillo st. including Brgy. san Juan, Ubalde Agdao, will also experience these outages. Also to experience are customers along mamay Road up to Cabantian and some portions of Cabantian-Indangan boundary and Communal. this also includes milan near Buhangin underpass going to Commission on Audit (CoA) office. Customers along Lanang, pampanga, sasa and panacan DpWH going to Ilang & malagamot areas, and those along panacan Diversion road up to La Verna & CoA Buhangin will also be affected by these service disruptions. Davao Light apologizes for the inconvenience of these scheduled power interruptions. But, it will exert all efforts to restore electric service as scheduled or earlier. However, there may be instances where restoration may extend beyond the schedule due to unavoidable circumstances. Davao Light’s supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (sCADA) remotely controls switches in substations and along the distribution lines. Hence, repair works and restorations of power supply are implemented at the barest minimum.

However, Ganaan clarified that since state of national calamity has been declared nationwide by malacanang, the automatic prize-free is applicable all over the country. stores were closed. “Halos lahat ng tindahan sarado at lubog sa putik (almost all stores were closed and half-buried in mud),” he said. He said they monitor the large establishments and use their prices as a peg for the price ceiling. However, he added, they only monitor the basic commodities and not fuel prices which are under the Department of energy. Reports from residents in Baganga, Davao oriental indicated an overpricing of gasoline at p100 per liter and of rice at p50 per kilo. “Usually the highly-priced gasoline items are those sold in litro bottles and not the ones sold by the gasoline companies,” he said. Ganaan said they went to typhoon-affected areas for the Diskwento Caravan but only a few people bought the low-priced items. “mas nakatuon ang attention nila sa relief goods because they don’t have money,” he added. the Caravan lasted only one
day as it is not advisable at this time when purchasing power is low, he added. He said they have field officers in the area but those who have complaints about stores overpricing their goods would be better off if they go to the field office in nabunturan and mati, or inform their local government about the overpricing. It is important that they identify the stores involved in the overpricing complaint so the DtI can act on it, he added. “We do not have enough manpower to monitor all the stores so we also need the cooperation of the people,” he said. He said pricing the goods 10% more than the price ceiling can be construed as overpricing already. stores found to have overpriced their goods after proper investigation can face sanctions including the payment of a penalty amounting to p17,500 or up to p1 million depending on the size of the store, he added.[LAC]

task force reported that the number of missing fishermen has increased to 343 as more missing “undocumented” fishermen were reported to the task force by their families and relatives. It described the “undocumented” fishermen as those who ventured out into the seas without documents from the philippine Coast Guard (pCG) and operated unregistered fishing boats. the rescuers have so far recovered 17 survivors and eight fatalities, six of whom were still unidentified. the report said most of the missing fishermen were crew members of 46 fishing vessels from the city that remained unaccounted since losing contact with their bases here at the height of the weather disturbance. the missing fishing vessels were owned by local tuna fishing firms Rugela Fishing, RAFI, DCG/pnoy, Lps Fishing, salazar/thidcor Fishing and RLG Fishing. three of the missing vessels were identified as m/BCA starey, FBCA Jerlyn and the “undocumented” FBCA eagle 2. most of the fishing boats reportedly went missing after being battered by huge waves and strong winds while on their way

towards the mainland of surigao del sur last December 3. the pCG station here earlier said that most of the missing fishing vessels, which were maintaining payao’s or fish aggregating devices located around 115 nautical miles off the eastern seaboard of mindanao, were already on their way to the nearest ports when the storm caught on them. Lincuna said the two Islander aircraft commissioned by the task force are presently assisting the search and rescue operations being conducted by vessels from the pCG, philippine navy/Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources and members of the socsksargen Federation of Fishing and Allied Industries, Inc. He said the United states navy has sent one of its Japan-based p-3C orion aircraft to manila on thursday morning to augment the aerial search. the official said the ongoing rescue operation, which is now on its eighth day, is concentrated along the southern part of the eastern seaboard of mindanao. “the prevailing wind and current is going downwards so the drift of the missing fishermen and the vessels is from north going southwest or
towards the Indonesian seas,” he said. Lincuna said that on Wednesday, the two Islander aircraft were allowed by Indonesia to enter its territorial air space “for the purpose of search and rescue.” DarCity mayor lene Antonino-Custodio said none among the unaccounted fishing vessels have been so far sighted but they remain hopeful that they’re still in the area and only drifted further into the open seas. “We’re hoping that it’s still a case of loss of communication due to damaged equipment, engine trouble and loss of fuel,” she said. the mayor said the task force, which is spearheaded by the city government, is continually drawing up possible measures and strategies to further hasten the ongoing search and rescue operations. Aside from coordinating the search and rescue operations, she said they are also attending to the needs of the families of the missing fishermen and the rescued survivors. she said the task force, through personnel from the city social welfare and development office, has so far processed 90 of them for stress debriefing. Azkals bow to Lions, end Suzuki Cup run
The Singapore Lions celebrate after scoring a 19th minute marker against the Azkals.
s
InGApoRe – Khairul Amri fired home the only goal of a tight contest as three-time champions singapore booked their place in the AFF suzuki Cup final with a 1-0 victory over the philippines at the Jalan Besar stadium on Wednesday. the striker, who netted the winner for the Lions in their 2007 final triumph against thailand, emerged as the hero once again when he was left unmarked on a quickly-taken free-kick by shahdan sulaiman in the 19th minute and fired home his second goal of the competition to give his side a 1-0 aggregate win. the Lions dominated the opening half but the philippines improved after the break although they rarely threatened to find an equaliser against the welldrilled singapore defence. singapore will now meet either three-time
champions thailand or 2010 winners malaysia in the AFF suzuki Cup final with the first leg at Jalan Besar on December 19 and the second leg in Bangkok or Kuala Lumpur on December 22. the other semi-final is still finely poised after a 1-1 draw in the first leg in Kuala Lumpur last sunday with the return game at Bangkok’s supachalasai stadium on thursday. It will be a third appearance in the final for coach Radojko Avramovic, who guided singapore to victory in the Asean regional competition in 2004 and 2007. “It’s absolutely great to get to the final and it is very nice that we have got there again,” said the serbian, who has been in charge of the Lions since 2003. “I think that over the two games, we were probably the better side and we
deserved to be in the final. But malaysia and thailand are both good teams so it should be an excellent final.” singapore’s starting line-up was unchanged from the goalless draw in the first leg in manila last saturday with Isa Halim coming in once again to play in central midfield in the absence of shi Jiayi, who had travelled to shanghai to deal with a family emergency. meanwhile, the philippines sported only one change from the first leg as Jerry Lucena, who missed his team’s last two matches to return to his Danish club esbjerg, replaced Jason De Jong in central midfield. After a cautious start by both sides, singapore gradually took control of the contest with shaiful esah firing just wide from 20 metres with the first real effort on goal in the 11th minute.
Angel Guirado was a marked man in the entire match.
Coach lauds Lions’ determination
s
InGApoRe coach Radojko Avramovic praised the character and determination of his players on Wednesday after they battled their way through to the AFF suzuki Cup final with a narrow 1-0 victory over the philippines at the Jalan Besar stadium. the Lions did not enjoy the best of build-ups to this
year’s tournament and lost to the Azkals in a pair of warm-up friendlies in september and november. But the three-time champions have risen to the occasion since they kicked off their tournament with a 3-0 win over defending champions malaysia and they reached the final for a fourth time thanks to Khairul Amri’s
19th minute strike in front of a full house of 7,500 at Jalan Besar. Avramovic, who was in charge of the Lions for two of their triumphs in 2004 and 2007, felt that the victory came down to the character of his players, who are fiercely determined to make amends for their group stage exit two years ago.
able to create very little against the well-drilled defence of the Lions. Weiss felt that the experience of the singapore side ultimately overcame his own team’s hunger for success. “I think that they had an extra portion of experience, cleverness and coolness and also some deserved luck and also good preparation so I think that they were the deserved winners,” said the German. “We have to be honest, we didn’t produce too many chances and that was the thing that was missing. our opponents also didn’t create too much but overall, I would say that they
deserved it. “one team has to go home and unfortunately it is us. It would have been a fantastic achievement if we had reached the final but that’s the way it is and in sports, you have to show dignity and grace when you lose and just continue.” Weiss felt that singapore’s physical approach made things very difficult for his side to get into the game. “We saw today that singapore were very aggressive, especially on our number 10, phil younghusband, but no fouls were called and no yellow cards were shown for fairly obvious fouls,” he said.
Weiss: Experience, cleverness did us p
The Philippines ended its Finals dream with a 0-1 loss to the Singapore Lions in the AFF Suzuki Cup.
HILIppInes coach michael Weiss has accepted that his side came out second best in their AFF suzuki Cup semi-final against singapore but they will have little time to dwell on their 1-0 aggregate defeat as they prepare for their next big challenge in march. Formerly the whipping boys of the competition, the Azkals reached the last four for the second consecutive time this year only to go down to a 19th minute strike by Khairul Amri at the Jalan Besar stadium on Wednesday. While the visitors had plenty of time to get back into the match, they were

ARTS & CULTURE
They say the true soul of a city lies in the visual and performance arts. Although Davao’s visual arts are already blossoming, the performance arts have lagged behind no thanks to the lack of a cultural center for theater. It is a good thing though that inspite of the lack of proper venues, the visionaries behind Musikademy persevered and trudged through with hit performance after hit performance, the latest of which is Something Wonderful Something Musical at Davao’s first proper performance theater, the SM Centerstage of SM Lanang Premier. Something Wonderful Something Musical features song excerpts from three Rodgers and hammerstein hits: The Sound of Music, The King and I, and Sound Pacific. The show included Bo Cerrudo, recipient of the 2012 Aliw Award for Best Male Performer; hong Kong-based pianist Michael Lopez; thespian, architect and lifestyle columnist Michael ebro Dakudao; and Musikademy’s very own selected student, scholars, faculty and special guests. The musical was like a walk down memory lane as song after song brought me and the audience back to my childhood, too bad some rude chattering ladies seated behind me thought a theater was where people talk loud and socialize
even after they have been shushed. Good thing the performances of Something Wonderful Something Musical spirited me away to a
feel-good place, else I swear I would have thrown a fit and asked for them to be thrown out. Something Wonderful Something Musical was directed by Cecile hidalgo, script and technical direction by March de Ramos, choreography is by Bimbo edison Morales. Music direction is by Alvin “Bong” Aviola who is also the driving force and music director behind Musikademy. My hats off to a job well done!

SM Foundation conducts relief operations at Compostela Valley SM SUpERMALLS activated its Operation Tulong Express Booths at SM City Davao, Lanang premier and SM Cagayan de Oro in last December 5, in response to the devastation that super typhoon pablo caused when it visited parts of Mindanao area early last week. Last Saturday, SM City Cebu , SM General Santos, SM Bacolod and SM Iloilo followed suit. The Operation Tulong Express is a project of SM Supermalls’ corporate social responsibility program SM Cares and SM Group of Companies’ social arm, SM Foundation Inc. Tulong Express Booths accept cash and in kind donations from shoppers for the victims of pablo. Headed by SM Foundation Vp for Community Outreach Cristie Angeles, volunteers from SM Lanang premier, SM City Davao, SM Supermarket and SM Cinema visited Compostela Valley for relief distribution last December 10. SAG Awards nominations 2013:
Snubs and surprises! To begin with, Zero Dark Thirty missed the main target—now there was a change of awards-season pace.
A quick take on the shocks from the predictably Les Misérables-, Lincoln- and Silver Linings Playbook-led 19th annual SAG Awards nominations: 1. Zero Dark Thirty got taken out by The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel: So, no—Kathryn Bigelow’s thriller didn’t get nominated for the SAG Awards’ equivalent of Best Picture: outstanding Motion Picture Cast. And while four of the films named to the category were absolutely expected—Argo and the triad of Les Mis, Lincoln and Silver Linings Playbook, which collectively led all films with four nods each— the fifth, The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel, was not. 2. The shock was that The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel was a shock: It hasn’t been high on our radar, like Zero Dark Thirty, but in retrospect its inclusion makes perfect sense. The movie stars a lot of favorites, including Judi Dench and Supporting Actress nominee Maggie Smith, and was a huge summer hit (for a gentle comedy about retirees). As pointed out by others, it was basically the art-house The Avengers, except it wasn’t a comicbook movie, hence it was eligible for awards. (And yes, we know The Avengers was technically eligible for awards, too…) 3. Nicole Kidman! She pulled out a Supporting Actress nod for the provocative The Paperboy. Some-
where The Master’s Amy Adams is wondering where her nomination went. 4. Javier Bardem! Maybe the Critics’ Choice Awards voters weren’t just being nice to the James Bond villain. Maybe the Skyfall star, now up for the Supporting Actor SAG Award, too, has a better-than-expected shot at an oscar nomination. 5. No Leonardo DiCaprio, no Russell Crowe, no Matthew McConaughey: Bardem’s gain was these gentlemen’s loss, as Argo’s Alan Arkin, Silver Linings Playbook’s Robert De Niro, The Master’s Philip Seymour hoffman and Lincoln’s Tommy Lee Jones took
their expected places, leaving only one slot for a guy who always gets snubbed (Django Unchained’s DiCaprio), a guy who’s gonna need some Les Mis block voting (Crowe), a guy who’s a year away from seriously making the awards-season scene (Magic Mike’s and Bernie’s McConaughey) or, as things turned out, Bardem. 6. Helen Mirren! Hitchcock’s Anthony hopkins couldn’t break into Lead Actor—not with Silver Linings Playbook’s Bradley Cooper, Lincoln’s Daniel Day-Lewis, The Sessions’ John hawkes, Les Mis’ hugh Jackman and Flight’s
Denzel Washington doing their thing—but his movie wife could and, somewhat surprisingly, did. The Impossible’s Naomi Watts was a semi-shock, too. Both Mirren and Watts benefited from the young Quvenzhané Wallis (and the rest of the nonunion cast of Beasts of the Southern Wild) being ineligible, and the venerable emmanuelle Riva from the French drama Amour, being passed over. The rest of the Lead Actress category went according to plan: Zero Dark Thirty’s Jessica Chastain, Rust and Bone’s Marion Cotillard and Silver Linings Playbook’s Jennifer Lawrence.

Justin Bieber throws water bottle at paparazzi in Miami HOW nice of Justin Bieber to offer those thirsty photographers a drink!
At least, that’s what we’ll assume he was doing when he chucked a plastic water bottle in the paparazzi’s direction on his way out of a store in Miami yesterday. No further drama occurred, it not being one of those days for the Biebs, but the 19-year-old is still probably pretty lucky that no cops were around to witness his mild outburst. According to state law, there’s a $50 fine for littering, plus a judge could make him pick up trash or “perform other labor commensurate with the offense committed.”
It’s unclear what provoked the reaction, other than the paparazzi’s general presence, but perhaps a curious shutterbug asked how Bieber was feeling after being shut out of the Grammy nominations.
But it’s the paps in Washington, D.C., who better duck now—Bieber, who also just announced a slew of summer 2013 dates on his Believe World Tour, was in town tonight to headline Hot 99.5’s Jingle Ball concert.
Anne Hathaway talks flashing paparazzi at Les Misérables premiere: “Made me sad” YES, Anne Hathaway inadvertently suffered the mother of all wardrobe malfunctions at the New York premiere of Les Misérables earlier this week, when her quest to avoid VpL led her to the now regrettable decision to ditch the underwear altogether. Cue her getting out of the car at a rather unfortunate angle and a massive Britney-esque paparazzi flash. Well, the newly minted Screen Actors Guild Award nominee is nothing if not graceful under pressure (and embarrassing ques-
tioning) and discussed the incident like the classy pro she is on the Today show this morning. “It was obviously an unfortunate incident,” she told Matt Lauer, who mentioned, master of the segue that he is, that he’s “seen a lot of you lately.” “It kind of made me sad on two accounts. One, that I was very sad that we live in an age when someone takes a picture of another person in a vulnerable moment and rather than delete it, and do the decent thing, sells it. “And I’m sorry that we
live in a culture that commodifies sexuality of unwilling participants, which brings us back to Les Mis: That’s what my character is, she is someone who is forced to sell sex to benefit her child because she has nothing and there’s no social safety net.” And just like that she answered the question on her terms, turned the conversation back to why we actually have been seeing so much of her—her Oscar-contending movie—and reminds us why she’s one of the classiest actresses in town.

Leaving an imprint on Christmas
BRING GOOD SHARES. EDGE Davao and its sister company, the Zion Accuprint Inc. threw its traditional Christmas treat to residents of Lingap Center for Mentally Challenged Children in Tugbok, Davao City.
The center, run by the City Social Services and Development Office (CSSDO) and managed by Leticia Ameistose, was in a festive mood last Wednesday as the visiting EDGE DavaoZion team mingled with the residents in playing parlor games.
To set the party mood, the Lingap children were given balloons and served with assortment of snacks courtesy of Sanny Sweets and Royal Breadhaus. And to top it, a sumptuous chicken overload lunch courtesy of McDonalds. The team’s choral group also rendered several lively Christmas songs to the delight of the children who even sang along. McDonald’s Matina Branch staff Teresa Concon and Jerwin Estrera played hosts to the party. They were
accompanied by Juliet Dabalos, the branch’s store activity department head. It has been a yearly tradition of Edge Davao and Zion Accuprint employees to contribute considerable amount to buy gifts for the disadvantaged children who are housed in various institutions. The management also makes contribution equivalent to the total amount raised by employees. This year’s gifts consist of shirts and toiletries, the latter courtesy of Unilever Philippines.

“I will give you a new surprise,” declared Arce during a press conference held at the toyota Center for his fight against nonito Donaire. Donaire is staking not only his World Boxing organization super-bantamweight title but his lofty status as a pound-forpound entrant in this faceoff with the rugged Arce.
padua stepped up when it mattered most and estong Uganap, Janwed Cagape, and Robinson palomares continue to play big time for DCpo, which never trailed in the semis match. padua, who finished the game with 19 points, found his mark early - hitting three triples in the first canto and carried it on in the pay off period as he converted another two three-pointers, including a shot-clock buzzer beating shot that gave the policemen an 88 – 71 lead under five minutes left in the game. Uganap scored gamehigh 26 points, 15 of them came in the third canto while Cagape and palomares had 18 baskets apiece for DCpo which last played in the finals in 2008. BFp appeared disorganized at the early going of the match, having a hard time executing and defending the policemen’s perimeter shooting and fast-break plays, which cost them bad-

But the policemen pummeled back behind padua, Uganap and Cagape as the Firemen looks exhausted in climbing back. A 10-0 rally capped with an Uganap three point play shut down the Firemen’s chance to get back in the game. Warlito Castillo paced BFp with 21 points as teammate Filbon maligro scored 16 baskets.
