Concert to support our local cowboy poet He is an award-winning, internationally recognized cowboy poet, authentic BC rancher, Cowboy Festival founder and organizer, family man, and friend. However you come in contact with or have recognized Kamloops local Mike Puhallo, it has definitely been in a good light. Mike Puhallo is one of those rare people who is always positive, always welcoming, and really just one of the most humble and hardworking people you could meet. “Mike Puhallo is the guy that was always first there to put on a benefit concert anytime someone was in need,” explains friend and fellow Cowboy Festival organizer Mark McMillan. “Well now’s the time to turn the table and to pay him back. Mike and his family are going through some trying times right now as he battles cancer, and they are facing many expenses, not to mention the fact that his wife, Linda, is having to work when she’d like to be home with Mike. We’d also like to see them be able to fly their son home for a visit and hopefully to take in the fundraising concert.” Mike has been recently diagnosed with a rare and aggressive form of cancer, and his community would like to come together to help the man who has spent his life helping others. Cowboy Heritage Society is hosting a benefit concert for the Puhallos with partial proceeds going to the Cancer Center for the Southern Interior. “The concert is at 7:00 p.m. on Friday, May 13th, at the Calvary Community Church in Kamloops,” continues Mark. “The line-up of entertainment makes me think this could be one of the best Cowboy Concerts ever and it’s definitely for one of the most deserving people! Gary Fjellgaard, Tim Hus and his band, Hugh McLennan, Butch Falk, Dave Longworth, Matt Johnston, and Shirley Field will all have a turn on stage, and family and friends will be running a concession during intermission. Tickets are just $15 in advance, or $20 at the door, and can be purchased at the Horse Barn in Kamloops, the Museum of the Cariboo Chilcotin in Williams Lake, or from the BC Cowboy Heritage Society at their toll free phone number 1-888-763-2224. Mike Puhallo could be referred to as Mr. Kamloops Cowboy Festival, Mr. BC Cowboy Hall of Fame, and Mr. BC Cowboy Heritage Society. Mike is one of the founders of all three, and has put a big chunk of his life over the last 15 years towards the betterment of all three, and everything – continued on page 2 229 Victoria Street 250-372-3565 449 Tranquille Road 250-376-0058 Royal Inland Hospital (Front Entrance) FoRmERly Cowboy CoFFEE

SILLY SASSY FOLLIES The seventh annual Silver Follies Variety Show is happening soon and will be as exciting as ever, with sing-a-longs, dancing, jokes, skits and so much more. Silver Follies members Bill Morrison and Jeanne Rodrigue were captured on film at one of their rehearsals at the North Shore Community Centre. The show is on Friday, May 13 and Saturday, May 14 at the Pavilion Theatre, 1025 Lorne St., with all proceeds going to local charities! Tickets are available now at Kamloops LIVE! Box Office at 1025 Lorne Street or by calling 250-374LIVE (5483).

Gas reduction recommendation passed for TNRD

The Thompson-Nicola Regional District (TNRD) Board recently passed a recommendation to adopt an Official Community Plans (OCP) Amendment Bylaw, in response to a new provincial government bill that requires local governments to include greenhouse gas reduction targets, policies, and actions in OCPs. “These OCP amendments help us raise awareness and encourage residents and developers to reduce greenhouse gas emissions (GHG),” said Alexander Krause, TNRD planner. TNRD Planning Services has developed an amendment package for inclusion in each of the region’s ten existing OCPs. This package includes GHG reduction targets of ten per cent

by 2020 and 33 per cent by 2050 from 2007 levels, as well as policies and actions to support the GHG reduction targets, which bring forth subjects like B.C. Climate Action, transportation alternatives, compact development and smart growth, energy

conservation and recycling during both the planning and building phase with developers and homeowners. Other policies outlined in the amendment include continued awareness about landfill diversion, encouraging low impact

renewable energy generation including solar and geothermal technology, encouraging local and community gardens and encouraging initiatives to upgrade wood-burning appliances through wood stove exchange programs.

Community music for local cowboy Puhallo – continued from page 1 connected to them. He’s put on many Cowboy Concerts over the years, many of which have been benefit concerts for others. It’s his turn now, to sit in the audience, relax, and enjoy the show!” As Mike is coming to terms privately with the situation and is looking forward to his future, his friends and family ask that no one send emails or sympathy mes-

sages directly to Mike as he says that it makes his remaining time depressing. Everyone who has come into contact with him loves him so much that they wish him happiness and peace in these days that are already very sad for his family. “If you can’t make the concert and you’d like to help please send a cheque made out to BCCHS, with Mike Puhallo in the memo

line, and mail to The BC Cowboy Heritage Society, Box 137, Kamloops, BC, V2C 5K3,” finishes Mark. “Please don’t write directly to Mike.” More information about the Mike Puhallo Benefit Concert can be found online at www. bcchs.com or by calling 1-888763-2224. The concert is taking place on May 13 at the Calvary Community Church. Tanya Orozco, freelance

Second annual Jane’s Walk

The second annual Jane’s Walk in Kamloops takes place on Sunday, May 8. The Walking Lab at Thompson Rivers University invites you to join an exploration of Kamloops through walking. The walk is free, but participants can pre-register for the Kamloops walk via the Jane’s Walk website: www.janeswalk.net. Visual artist and TRU professor Ernie Kroeger will lead a walk entitled: The Corkscrew Road. This road once led from Kam-

loops to Knutsford, but is now almost forgotten. The walk, from parkade to parkland, will begin with a quick reconnaissance of the downtown before heading uphill towards Peterson Creek. From there walkers will wind their way around to the Corkscrew Road, continue uphill and then loop back through the snakesand-ladders staircases of Sahali. The walk will conclude at Caffé Motivo on Victoria Street. Jane’s Walks, held

across North America, are named after Jane Jacobs, the famed urbanist and activist whose writings championed a fresh, community-based approach to city planning. A firm believer in the importance of local residents having input on how their neighbourhoods develop, Jacobs believed the best way to get to know the city and the neighbours was on foot. For further information, contact Ernie Kroeger by email: ekroeger@tru.ca.

Saint Peter and the MP

One day, while walking down the street a Member of Parliament is tragically hit by a truck and dies. His soul arrives in heaven and is met by St. Peter at the entrance. Says St. Peter, “We seldom see a high official around these parts, you see, so we’re not sure what to do with you. “No problem, just let me in, says the man. “Well, I’d like to, but I have orders from higher up. What we’ll do is have you spend one day in hell and one in heaven. Then you can choose where to spend eternity. “I’ve already picked - heaven it is he says. “I’m sorry, but we have our rules. And with that, St. Peter escorts him to the elevator and he goes down to hell. The doors open and he finds himself in the middle of a green golf course and sees all his friends and people who had worked with him. Everyone is very happy and in evening dress. They run to greet him, shake his hand, and reminisce about the good times they had. They play a friendly game of golf and then dine on lobster, caviar and champagne. The stages of motherhood

Here is a light hearted presentation of what we all think about our moms, at different points of our lives. Don’t get surprised because we all have the same tendency towards our mothers!   4 Years Of Age - My Mommy can do anything;   8 Years Of Age - My Mom knows a lot! A whole lot 12 Years Of Age - My Mother doesn’t really know quite everything. 14 Years Of Age - Naturally, Mother doesn’t know that, either 16 Years Of Age - Mother? She’s hopelessly old-fashioned 18 Years Of Age - That old woman? She’s way out of date 25 Years Of Age - Well, she might know a little bit about it 35 Years Of Age - Before we decide, let’s get Mom’s opinion 45 Years Of Age - Wonder what Mom would have thought about it 65 Years Of Age - Wish, I could talk it over with Mom

Things Mom would never say How on earth can you see the TV sitting so far back? Yeah, I used to skip school a lot, too. Just leave all the lights on ... it makes the house look more cheery. Let me smell that shirt -- Yeah, it’s good for another week. Go ahead and keep that stray dog, honey. I’ll be glad to feed

and walk him every day. Well, if Timmy’s mom says it’s OK, that’s good enough for me. The curfew is just a general time to shoot for. It’s not like I’m running a prison around here. I don’t have a tissue with me ... just use your sleeve. Don’t bother wearing a jacket - the wind-chill is bound to improve.
