The Royal Inland Master Site Plan is now finalized, providing a clear vision and road map to guide future hospital development. Stakeholder collaboration and discussion has occurred throughout the last year in order to establish the final Master Site Plan. Staff and physicians, as well as the City of Kamloops and Regional Hospital District, were among those who provided input. The Master Site Plan reflects anticipated program needs and demographics for the next 15 years and into the future. In addition to site access and surgical capacity, the need to redesign and expand the inpatient unit and increase the focus on Ambulatory Care were also identified as key components of the plan. “We know it is critical to prepare for the growing and changing needs of the population, not only in Kamloops but across the region,� says Interior Health Board Chair Norman Embree. “This plan reflects a long term look at planning needs with solutions in the next 10
years and a vision for beyond.� To address the priorities of surgical capacity and parking, Interior Health will be considering a new multi-storey surgical and inpatient tower, built adjacent to the existing Laboratory building on the east side of the hospital. The tower would include below-grade parking and a new multi-storey
parkade structure with clinical service expansion opportunities at Columbia Street, with linkage to the existing facility. The next step involves developing the scope of work that would be involved with these projects in order for them to be considered in Interior Health’s capital planning process.
Mission Flats re-opened The City of Kamloops reopened the Mission Flats Road to the general public as of Friday, July 22 and continues to operate as per regular business hours. Repairs to the main liquid waste pumping station and clean-up efforts as a result of this incident are still ongoing. Further details regarding this incident will be provided by the City of Kamloops as they become available. The City would like to thank Domtar for their support throughout this incident by providing the
use of their heavy equipment and property as well as their understanding with the disruption of the necessary road closure near the mill. Additionally, the City would like to recognize the quick response of all contractors who provided assistance throughout this incident. Ceremonies fuse sport and arts
The start of the 2011 Western Canada Summer Games are less than two weeks away and finishing touches on the Opening Ceremonies are being made. Co-producers Amy Baskin and Alan Corbishley have been working feverishly with the 60 or so local performers which include gymnasts dancers and cheerleaders. “We’ve been excited to fuse sport and the arts,� says Alan about the opening ceremonies production. Among those set to perform at the event include Kamloops native Kate Morgan (who wrote the official song of the Western Canada Summer Games) and the Kamloops Rube Band. But that is all Amy and Alan will reveal as the rest is going to be a spectacular surprise. The Opening Ceremonies will take place at the Interior Savings Center on
August 5 at 7:00 p.m. The event will include the lighting of the Games cauldron following a torch run which starts at Fulton Field (Kamloops Airport) and goes through most of the city of Kamloops including the T’Kumlups Indian Reserve. Plenty of good seats are still available for both the Opening Ceremonies and the Closing Ceremonies (set for August 14 at 3:00 p.m. at the ISC. Tickets are available at Kamloops Ticketmaster, the ISC Box Office or any Ticketmaster outlet. A reminder that Venue Passes for the 19 sports of the 2011 Western Canada Summer Games are available at the Kamloops Live Box Office or online at kamloopslive.com. Cycling, Golf and Triathalon are all free of charge for spectators.

Donovan Cavers runs for City Council Donovan Cavers confirmed on July 21 that he will be running for a seat on Kamloops City Council this fall. He made the run decision some time ago but due to unforeseen circumstances had to step in as a candidate in the recent federal election, which required considerable time and energy. However, his batteries are now fully re-charged for the upcoming municipal election on November 19th. As a councillor, Donovan will focus on encouraging and supporting inno-
vative, local businesses, in particular, the expanding tourism sector. Donovan ran in the last two federal elections as the local Green Party candidate. He admits that he ran primarily to include certain perspectives in the federal debate and was aware that he had little chance of winning a seat. However, following the upcoming municipal election he fully intends to be one of the nine voices representing the citizens of Kamloops. For years, Donovan has advocated
for the diversification of transportation options in Kamloops. In early February he made a presentation at one of the largest turnouts ever to a City budget hearing. He considers his ability to attract widespread public involvement in civic matters as an important asset. Donovan views quality of life projects as vital components of a healthy city. He will ensure that initiatives such as Music in the Park and Project X Theatre receive adequate, ongoing funding.

Cotton Picker's Quilting Guild join Artwalk This year five members of the Cotton Picker’s Quilting Guild have decided to show off their work during Artwalk. The Guild has been in Kamloops for 10 years and meets on the second and fourth Wednesday afternoon at Cottonwood Community Centre on the North Shore. Each year they raffle a quilt for the Marjorie Snowden Hospice House in Kamloops as well as make donations of quilted items to the Christmas Hospice Store. This will be the first time they have joined this Arts Council event and were hoping that we can entice all 48 of them to display their fine work at next year’s walk.

A couple of young fellers were fishing at their special pond off the beaten track when out of the bushes jumped the game warden! Immediately, one of the boys threw his rod down and started running through the woods, and hot on his heels came the game warden. After about a half mile the fella stopped and stooped over with his hands on his thighs to catch his breath and the game warden finally caught up to him. “Lets see yer fishin’ license, boy!� the warden gasped. With that, the fella pulled out his wallet and gave the game warden a valid fishing license. “Well, son,� said the game warden, “You must be about as dumb as a box of rocks! Please note the following public service announcement: In B.C., tourists are warned to wear tiny bells on their clothing when hiking in bear country. The bells warn away most bears. Tourists are also cautioned to watch the ground on the trail, paying particular attention to bear droppings to be alert for the presence of Grizzly Bears. Hikers that use walking sticks are more likely to chase animals. uTrails need to be reconstructed. Please avoid building trails that go uphill. uToo many bugs and leeches and spiders and spider webs. Please spray the wilderness to rid the area of these pests. uPlease pave the trails so they can be plowed of snow in the winter.

Please eradicate these annoying animals. uReflectors need to be placed on trees every 50 feet so people can hike at night with flashlights.
Setting up camp
The loaded mini-van pulled into the only remaining campsite. Four children leaped from the vehicle and began feverishly unloading gear and setting up the tent. The boys rushed to gather firewood, while the girls and their mother set up the camp stove and cooking utensils. A nearby camper marveled to the youngsters’ father, “That, sir, is some display of teamwork.” The father replied, “I have a system — no one goes to the bathroom until the camp is set up.”

Duration 2 1/2 Hours
Each tour will commence with a 17 minute video detailing the overall mining operation followed by a guided bus tour on the mine site of various points of interest. Casual dress recommended (consisting of pants, runners, & NO open toed shoes). Due to safety regulations, children under the age of 12 are not permitted on the regular Monday - Friday daily tours. The maximum number of individuals per tour is 10 so please CALL AHEAD to reserve your seat.
