Ditch the car and try two-wheel transport You don’t need to explain the benefits of biking to downtown lawyer Rob McDiarmid and his fellow biking pals. Rob and company meet every single weekday morning at 6:30 a.m. from spring until fall and pedal their way to good health. “The old guys meet every morning at Caffe Motivo,” explains Rob. “We ride for an hour and have been doing so for about 10 years.” This group, which at its peak is about 12 strong, is comprised of members from all across our community. Their one hour ride takes them farther than I have ever been on a bike and usually includes some sort of hill climb and exhaustive workout. “We have all known each other for a long time,” furthers Rob. “We all ski and originally this was a way to keep fit for skiing in the off season. We usually ride roughly 30 kilometres. We have normal routes that we follow; out to the Dallas Store, Raleigh, the Dunes, out to Cinnamon Ridge, Batchelor, Westsyde and more. We try to ride into the wind so we can blow home. We share tips on equipment, buy stuff together, discuss websites and once we finish, we all have a coffee together and then go home and shower for work.” This group is the perfect example of how biking can fit into your lifestyle if you so choose. If you have ever thought about breaking out on two wheels and commuting into the downtown core via bicycle, there is no better time than now. Not only has the weather just started to calm down and even show a glimpse of sun, but we are also about to embark on the official Bike to Work Week which runs from May 30 to June 5. If you take a look around, you’ll see that many of the people in our community bike to work on a fairly regular basis. Stephen from Kennell’s Shoes has been bicycling to work for the last 16 years. He used to do it year round but now does on non rainy and snowy days. You can also often see popular yogi Christina Schieberle pedaling her way to the studio, and the Echo’s own editor Natasha Lyndon pushes

her pedals to work on a semi-regular basis. These active downtown folks show us that with a little bit of will, we can all break out of our cars even for one day a week and travel to work on bike. Not only is it great for the environment, but it is great for our health and pocket book as well. If you think you have what it takes, consider joining in on Bike to – continued on page 2

campaign takes huge leap Trade investment forum ICU Media, staff, and loyal donors as the second member of Team The Trade and Investment Representative (TIR) Roadshow is a forum presented by Venture Kamloops in which your company will be able to build valuable contacts, relationships and networks in foreign markets with BC Trade Reps. This is also a great opportunity for our community to market Kamloops to the BC Trade Reps and help put us on the map internationally. The BC Ministry of Tourism, Trade and Investment will be bringing the province’s network of overseas trade and investment representatives to the Thompson-Okanagan region to meet with companies that are actively looking to expand their exports beyond traditional markets or actively seeking investment for well-defined projects The TIRs represent the international markets of Americas, Japan, Korea, North and South China, India and Europe. The reps have broad experience in a wide array of industry sectors such as transportation, logistics, environmental technologies (Green Energy), advanced machinery and natural resources. The TIR Roadshow takes place on May 27, 8:30am – 4:30pm at Interior Savings Centre, Parkside Lounge. Register you attendance today at this free event by emailing Cindy at: cindy@venturekamloops.com or calling 250-828-6818.

of the Royal Inland Hospital Foundation gathered at Zimmer Wheaton last week to hear the new total for the Mark Recchi 365 Day Challenge to the community to raise the remaining funds for the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) in RIH. The total raised to date took a leap from $1.3 million to $1.9 million. With just over $1 million dollars left to raise for the campaign, Rob Zimmer and the Family of Dealerships joined

Recchi. For the months of May and June, all three dealerships will donate $100 for every used or new vehicle purchased. For almost 30 years, critically ill and injured patients have received life-saving care in the ICU at RIH. The modern ICU will bring upgraded technology, improved privacy, greater efficiencies for hospital staff, and much-needed support and comfort to patients and their families and friends.

Bear the torch this summer

If you missed the Olympics in 2010 here is your chance to experience the thrill and excitement of being a torch bearer in a major multi-sport event! The Western Canada Summer Games (WCSG) are coming to Kamloops August 5 to 14 and 40 torch bearers will be selected to take part in the opening ceremonies torch relay. This symbolic event will start at the Kamloops Airport and make its way through the city

where it will end in a final, triumphant lighting of the caldron at the opening ceremonies in Interior Savings Centre. To enter the torch bearer contest, pick up an application form at the Games Office at 262 Lorne St. or download it from the WCSG website at www.2011wcsg.com and email to wsgtorchrelay2011@yahoo.com Don’t miss this opportunity to be a part of this historic event in Kamloops. Deadline for submissions is June 24.

Ride your bike to work week – continued from page 1 Work Week (BTWW). “Kamloops Bike to Work/Bike to School Week is back for its fourth year,” explains Johanne Rene, coordinator of Kamloops Bike to Work Week. “During the week of May 30th, we invite all businesses and their employees to challenge themselves to ‘Bike to Work’. Participation is free, and there will be lots of prizes for teams and individuals. We are working closely with the City of Kamloops and the organizing committee, comprised of volunteers, to put together a series of events leading up to and including the duration of BTWW.”

More information about BTWW can be found online at www.biketowork.ca/Kamloops/About, including signup forms and a great map put out by the City of Kamloops which shows all designated, marked and unmarked bike routes in the city. No matter what area of town you are coming from, there is some sort of designated, tested and safe route for you to follow. Once you get downtown, pedal your bike into your office or use one of the six bike racks on Victoria Street. Just remember to bring a lock! Happy Biking! Tanya Orozco, freelance

Host concerts in your home Home Routes is a not-forprofit organization dedicated to making music more accessible to a greater number of people, enriching community culture and supporting professional artists. Organizing house concert circuits, they are a revolution in the Folk music world, and are now recruiting volunteer hosts for their upcoming season. Each artist on tour performs 12 concerts in 14 days. Each volunteer house concert host presents six shows over the course of a season. Since its inception in 2007, Home Routes has grown to 14 circuits involving over 150 urban and rural communities! Hosts commit to six house concerts per season and to promote the house concerts to their networks; an audience of approximately 30 friends and family members make for a warm and personable atmosphere. Hosts

also provide accommodations and a healthy home-cooked meal for the one or two artists performing. All ticket sale proceeds (normally $20) go directly to the artist. There is no cost to the host or kids under 12. Home Routes provides artistic direction and coordinates the circuits. No sound system necessary! All performers are acoustic musicians who will present the same concert in a home that they would normally at larger theatres or venues. Home Routes promotes the joy of contributing to the cultural and social vitality of the community, for people of all ages, through quality musical activities. Exciting future for Science Centre

To the editor: Since its inception, the BIG Little Science Centre (BLSC) has gone from success to success, expanding its offerings and availability. Initially, we were a special asset for one school, then for the entire Kamloops school district, then the regional district and now the province. School children from Kamloops and surrounding districts have joined kids, parents and educators from the rest of British Columbia and Canada, as well as the United States, the United Kingdom, Germany, China, Japan, New Zealand, Pakistan, and other countries, in experiencing an entertaining, educational and instructive science experience. Members of the public can now visit during after-school times and on Saturdays. We are very proud of our Science Centre and the support it has received from numerous individuals and organizations, locally, provincially and na-

tionally. Bryan Tisdall, the President and CEO of Science World said our science centre “could be a model for every district in the province”. The very existence of the Science Centre has contributed to the success of Bert Edwards Science and Technology School (BEST), whose science and technology enrichment is a first for BC. However, the very success of Bert Edwards is causing a squeeze on the space available to the Centre within the school, which is compounded by the Centre’s own need for extra space as we add to our offerings. The Directors of the BIG Little Science Centre Society have decided that the timing and circumstances are right foa new science centre building of our very own. This is an exciting time for the BLSC. A facility of our own would open up many new possibilities for the BLSC to promote fun hands-on science in Kamloops. We know there

is strong community support for the Centre and believe this is an opportunity for the citizens of Kamloops and surrounding communities to have their say in developing this resource. If you are interested in getting involved in the design and/or construction of the new facility, please contact Gord Stewart at the BLSC at 250554-2572 or gord@blscs.org. The BLSC will look at short-term options to alleviate this reduced available space in BEST School. One possibility is the construction of some temporary buildings on the grounds at BEST School. Another option is to lease unused space at a different district school. If you would like to discuss what is happening in more detail or wish to help with the process please contact Gord Stewart. This is your Science Centre; this is your opportunity! Submitted by the Board of Directors, BIG Little Science Centre Society

Creating coffee art you’ll like a lattĂŠ! There is something about a great tasting, good looking specialty coffee that just starts the day off right. Whether it is a latte, mocha, macchiato or any espresso based milk beverage, there is no reason it can’t taste good and be beautiful. Ever since the revolution of the coffee culture in the Pacific Northwest in the 1980’s, the importance of not only having a great tasting coffee, but one that is also aesthetically pleasing has been on the rise. Now when you go into many high end coffee shops you will see baristas all over the country and the world showing pride in their product and work, serving you beverages that really are a piece of art – latte art. Here in town this practice is practiced by the superb baristas at Caffe Motivo. With three locations around the city, Caffe Motivo believes that spending a little more time and attention on each cup goes a long way. Never ones to keep their love of coffee to themselves, they are inviting the entire community to come down and try their hand at pouring their own latte art. “We want to invite anyone who is involved in the coffee community and wants to come pour some latte art to come and join us for the first ever Okanagan Barista Jam here in Kamloops,â€? explains Greg Hanycz, Caffe Motivo barista extraordinaire. “This is a chance for coffee lovers and coffee nerds to come and see how big our coffee community actually is.â€? The Caffe Motivo boys just got back from the first Okanagan Barista Jam hosted by John Bigsley of Blenz Kelowna and enjoyed it so much that they have invited everyone from all around to join them here in Kamloops to keep

Do you think you can pour a latte that rivals those of the professionals? If your answer is yes you may just want to be at the downtown Caffe Motivo for the first ever Okanagan Barista Jam held in Kamloops. Caffe Motivo’s Greg Hanycz (L) and Jesse Harding, and crew will be going head to head pouring latte art with professional and non-professional baristas from all over the region.

the party going. The Barista Jam is happening this Monday, May 30 at 7:00 p.m. at the Caffe Motivo Victoria Street location. “It is free and open to the public, finishes Greg. “Anyone can come watch or participate. Just come and sign up on the sheet of paper. We will have seasoned veterans and rookies going head to head. Although it is a competition, not a lesson, you don’t need to be

a professional, anyone who feels worthy and wants to take a stab at it is welcome. Come show us what you got. So if you think you can pour a latte that rivals those of the professionals, head to the downtown Caffe Motivo at 229 Victoria Street, this May 30 at 7:00 p.m. for the first ever Okanagan Barista Jam here in town. River water high - With warmer temperatures approaching, the Thompson-Nicola Regional District would like to remind residents about high stream flows. Although flooding is not expected on the larger rivers at this time, many smaller tributary streams will reach full bank conditions with average seasonal flows. Recent warm temperatures and rainfall falling on high elevation snowpack have generated high volumes of runoff in these streams. Residents living in low lying areas are advised to be on the alert for high water flows and keep children away from unstable riverbanks. Use extreme caution or contact local authorities to remove plugged culverts. Also, just a reminder that cooler and faster flowing water exists for those who may be doing recreational boating. Should you notice flooding in your area, please contact the Provincial Emergency Program 24 hour Emergency Coordination Centre at 1-800-663-3456. shriners parade - The Gizeh Shriners of British Columbia and Yukon invite the public to watch their Kamloops Kapers Kidz Kount Spring Ceremonial parade, which takes place May 28. The parade starts at 10:30 a.m. and the route runs from City Hall and travels along Victoria St. to the Memorial Arena on Victoria and 7th Avenue. For more info contact Dave Costain at 250-851-0364.

Your Horoscope GEMINI (May 22-June 21)  You are exceptional at presenting your ideas. Changes in your home may be disruptive and upsetting. Concentrate on your career and on making money. You may find it impossible to get the rest you require. CANCER (June 22-July 22)  Try not to be too harsh with your mate. You can make a serious attempt at quitting those bad habits that you’ve picked up over the years. Do whatever your mate wants; it really doesn’t matter as long as you’re together. Problems with ear, nose, or the throat are likely. LEO (July 23-Aug 22)  You may be emotional if you allow your lover to take advantage of your good nature. You will have a greater involvement in groups; however, they may not be to your advantage. Your ability to deal with others will help you in getting the support you need. You won’t be admired at home if you haven’t been taking care of your share of the work. VIRGO (Aug 23-Sept 23)  Your emotional reaction will be dependent upon your partner’s responsiveness. Visit friends or relatives you don’t get to see very often. New love connections can be made through group associations. Over spending or unexpected bills could set you back.
