Take mom for tea and fashion show You never really understand how much your mother must love you until you have children of your own. It is a mother’s job to love, nurture and feed both the belly and the soul of the child. It’s her job to teach her child how life works, how to be kind, caring and accepting as well as how to meet life with open arms and an open mind. Mothers are the life of our families, and they give of themselves like no one else. It only seems fitting that we set aside at least one day per year to celebrate and honour our mothers. Whether you take your mom out for breakfast, make her dinner or a special gift, just give her a day off to go and relax, or all of the above, do something to let your mom know that you appreciate all she does and all that she is. Whether you are a mother or are looking for a fun event to go to with your mom this year, consider heading over to the North Shore Community Centre for their annual Mother’s Day Fashion Show, Bake Sale, and Strawberry Tea! Taking place this Saturday, May 7 at the North Shore Community Centre in honour of Mother’s Day and all the mothers in our lives, the event is only $12 for a whole lot of fun. The annual event is popular with seniors who attend with

their friends, children, grandchildren or even their spouses. The tea event is open to all and the show boasts fashions for men, women and children of all ages. Fabulously modeled by volunteers who live inside and outside of the centre, it is sure to be a clothing extravaganza. Suzanne’s from Northills will be showcasing their wares and as well there will be ensembles from Marks Work Wearhouse and Joe Clothing. “This is always a fun event,” says Brenda Giesbrecht of the North Shore Community Centre. “This event caters to people of all ages especially seniors. It can be hard for seniors to find clothing. This is a great way to see some available and different things from some of our local businesses and shops.” The fashion show is only half of the fun. The event also features a fabulous bake sale at the beginning as well as a Strawberry Tea, which means there will be strawberry shortcake! “The bake sale starts at 1:00 p.m.,” continues Brenda. “You can still come to the bake sale even if you are not attending the tea. All the goodies are fresh and homemade but you better come early because they sell out fast!” – continued on page 2

SILLY SASSY FOLLIES The seventh annual Silver Follies Variety Show is happening soon and will be as exciting as ever, with sing-a-longs, dancing, jokes, skits and so much more. Silver Follies members Bill Morrison and Jeanne Rodrigue were captured on film at one of their rehearsals at the North Shore Community Centre. The show is on Friday, May 13 and Saturday, May 14 at the Pavilion Theatre, 1025 Lorne St., with all proceeds going to local charities! Tickets are available now at Kamloops LIVE! Box Office at 1025 Lorne Street or by calling 250-374LIVE (5483).

Gas reduction for TNRD The Thompson-Nicola Regional District (TNRD) Board recently passed a recommendation to adopt an Official Community Plans (OCP) Amendment Bylaw, in response to a new provincial government bill that requires local governments to include greenhouse gas reduction targets, policies, and actions in OCPs. “These OCP amendments help us raise awareness and encourage residents and developers to reduce greenhouse gas emissions (GHG),” said Alexander Krause, TNRD planner. TNRD Planning Services has developed an amendment package for inclusion in each of the region’s ten existing OCPs. This package includes GHG reduction targets of ten per cent by 2020 and 33 per cent by 2050

from 2007 levels, as well as policies and actions to support the GHG reduction targets, which bring forth subjects like B.C. Climate Action, transportation alternatives, compact development and smart growth, energy conservation and recycling during both the planning and building phase with developers and homeowners. Other policies outlined in the amendment include continued awareness about landfill diversion, encouraging low impact renewable energy generation including solar and geothermal technology, encouraging local and community gardens and encouraging initiatives to upgrade wood-burning appliances through wood stove exchange programs.

Mother’s Day tea and fashion – continued from page 1 There probably isn’t a better or more enjoyable way to celebrate the spirit of Mother’s Day. Grab your friends, your mom, your daughter, or your husband and head down to the North Shore Community Centre to get tickets for their annual Mother’s Day Tea, Bake Sale and Fashion Show.

Always popular and a season highlight, it is an event you will not want to miss. Tickets are only $12 and must be pre-purchased, and are available at the front desk of the North Shore Community Centre at 730 Cottonwood Avenue or by phone at 250-376-4777. Tanya Orozco, freelance

SPCA city challenge with Nanaimo Kamloops is taking on Nanaimo in a showdown for the Super Bowl of SPCA fundraisers, which runs until May 31. The annual SPCA City Challenge is back with a month full of events to benefit homeless animals in Kamloops and Nanaimo. The two communities are competing against each other, with bragging rights to the one who raises the most cash for their local SPCA. “Kamloops needs to defend its title of “Top Dog” from the previous City challenges,” says branch manager Charleen Holloway. “Nanaimo is eager to take top spot this year, so the challenge is on”. Holloway’s fighting words are all in jest because the true winners are the animals in both communities. The event kicks off on May 7 with a barbecue and bottle drive at the Kamloops shelter at 1211 8th Street from 12:00 to 2:00 p.m. and a pub night dinner event from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the Rockin Firkin Pub, with dinner tickets on sale at the SPCA. Other exciting events are the Balls and Bats for Dogs and Cats Mixed Slow-pitch Tournament running May 13 to15, with prizes, contests, beer garden and concession. On Saturday, May 14,

the public is invited to the BC SPCA and Hill’s Science Diet Open House at the Kamloops shelter from 12:00 to 3:00 p.m., with a by-donation barbecue, pet photos, pet nail trimming, an “Ask a trainer” booth and children’s games. Hill’s Science Diet, which generously donates all the food for dogs, cats, puppies and kittens at the BC SPCA shelters, offers a free bag of food with every adoption. On May 28 from 11:00 to 3:00 p.m. at the Kamloops Walmart store there

is a round-up barbecue, adoption display and information station. The fundraising goal for Kamloops in the City Challenge is $40,000.00. “Our branch alone cares for over 1200 animals a year, and we could not do that without the support and generosity of our community and businesses,” says Holloway. For more information on the City Challenge and what you can do to help animals in Kamloops, visit spca.bc.ca/ Kamloops or call 250376-7722.

Blue Blaze soccer boys score The Kamloops Blue Blaze Boys U12 Rep soccer team participated in the Lake Country 2011 Icebreaker Tournament at the end of April. The team narrowly missed a berth in the playoff round after tying for second place in their pool but losing the decision to Kelowna United Team 2 based on only a one goal differential. The team kicked off the tournament with a 2-2 tie against Kelowna United Team 2. Brett Olstad and Dimitri Louvros scored the goals for the Blaze. The team’s second game was against the pool win-

ners, the Prince George Kodiaks. Despite outplaying their opponents and a hat trick by forward Brett Olstad, Prince George edged out the Blaze 4-3. The Blaze’s final game of the tournament was a 3-3 draw against Kelowna United Academy. Kamloops again dominated most of the game but a late minute goal from Kelowna tied the game and dashed the Blaze’s playoff chances. Dimitri Louvros, Brett Olstad, and Chris Buchanan scored for the Blaze. While all of the boys put forth a strong effort, Brett Olstad, Dimitirs Louvros,

and Kyle Robertson were named the Blaze’s MVPs for the tournament. The Blaze received solid net minding by new goaltender Cameron French.

Derby dolls geared up for first bout

There is a group of women on a mission to rock Kamloops. They wear purple uniforms and are the proudest and loudest roller derby league in town. These gals are the Tournament City Derby Dolls (TCDD) and they have accomplished a lot for their league and the sport since starting up last year. “It is hard to believe the amount of work we have accomplished in such a short period of time, explains TCDD spokeswomen and derby doll Cristina ‘Acid Doll’ Ostapovitch. “Although it is an old sport, this is new to the Tournament Capital. This brings us one step closer to making Kamloops the derby capital of the west. There is no reason it shouldn’t be. All the other surrounding cities already have established derby leagues. Saint Peter and the MP

One day, while walking down the street a Member of Parliament is tragically hit by a truck and dies. His soul arrives in heaven and is met by St. Peter at the entrance. Says St. Peter, “We seldom see a high official around these parts, you see, so we’re not sure what to do with you. “No problem, just let me in, says the man. “Well, I’d like to, but I have orders from higher up. What we’ll do is have you spend one day in hell and one in heaven. Then you can choose where to spend eternity. “I’ve already picked - heaven it is he says. “I’m sorry, but we have our rules. And with that, St. Peter escorts him to the elevator and he goes down to hell. The doors open and he finds himself in the middle of a green golf course and sees all his friends and people who had worked with him. Everyone is very happy and in evening dress. They run to greet him, shake his hand, and reminisce about the good times they had. They play a friendly game of golf and then dine on lobster, caviar and champagne. Also present is the devil, who really is a very friendly guy, who has a good time dancing and telling jokes. Before he realizes it, it is time to go. Everyone bids the MP a farewell and waves while the elevator rises. The elevator goes up and the door reopens

on heaven where St. Peter is waiting for him. The MP joins a group of contented souls moving from cloud to cloud, playing the harp and singing. They have a good time and, before he realizes it, 24 hours have gone by and St. Peter returns. “Well, then, you’ve spent a day in hell and another in heaven. Choose your eternity. The MP reflects for a minute and answers, “Well, I would never have said it before, I mean heaven has been delightful, but I think I would be better off in hell. St. Peter escorts him to the elevator and he goes down to hell. Now the doors of the elevator open and he’s in the middle of a barren land covered with waste and garbage. He sees all his friends, dressed in rags, picking up the trash and putting it in black bags as more trash falls from above. The devil comes over to him and puts his arm around his shoulder. “I don’t understand, stammers the MP. “Yesterday I was here and there was a golf course and clubhouse, we ate lobster and caviar, drank champagne and danced and had a great time. Now there’s just a wasteland full of garbage and my friends look miserable. What happened? The smiling devil looks at him and says, “Yesterday we were campaigning. Today you voted.

How on earth can you see the TV sitting so far back? Yeah, I used to skip school a lot, too. Just leave all the lights on ... it makes the house look more cheery. Let me smell that shirt -- Yeah, it’s good for another week. Go ahead and keep that stray dog, honey. I’ll be glad to feed

and walk him every day. Well, if Timmy’s mom says it’s OK, that’s good enough for me. The curfew is just a general time to shoot for. It’s not like I’m running a prison around here. I don’t have a tissue with me ... just use your sleeve. Don’t bother wearing a jacket - the wind-chill is bound to improve.

Bottle feeding: An opportunity for Daddy to get up at 2 am too. Defense: What you’d better have around the yard if you’re going to let the children play outside. Drooling: How teething babies wash their chins. Dumbwaiter: One who asks if the kids would care to order dessert. Family planning: The art of spacing your children the proper distance apart to keep you on the edge of financial disaster Feedback: The inevitable result when the baby doesn’t appreci-

ate the strained carrots. Full name: What you call your child when you’re mad at him. Grandparents: The people who think your children are wonderful even though they’re sure you’re not raising them right. Hearsay: What toddlers do when anyone mutters a dirty word. Impregnable: A woman whose memory of labor is still vivid. Look out: What it’s too late for your child to do by the time you scream it. Prenatal: When your life was still somewhat your own.
