While many of us look forward to conquering our new resolutions, I encourage you to reflect back on 2013 and think about everything you’ve accomplished, as well as what you learned from the experiences life presented. Although we tend to focus on our blemishes and strive to change things we’re not overly fond of about ourselves, perhaps we need to use reflection as a path for improvement. I will be the first to admit that trying to forget the pitfalls of yesterday is what

I typically want to do, but as I grow older I often see history repeat itself; and I have realized that success comes only after a lesson has been learned. So I challenge you to use your past as a guide to your future, let your experiences assist you in achieving your goals for tomorrow. And5 as my Mom would say, “Don’t forget to enjoy the ride.” Happy New Year! Jack Shotbolt Editor in Chief

MADE entered just beyond the neighborhood’s grand entrance, this Pacific Ridge model home features many of the unique details that Jay Pohlad strategically incorporates into his homes – distinctive fireplace designs, a copper range hood, custom staircase, vaulted ceilings, and timeless wood beams.

Jay started Pohlad Custom Homes with his brother, Richie, in 1997. They focus their efforts on building six to eight new custom homes each year, allowing them to develop personal relationships with homeowners and hone in on the details they believe make a house a home. With a lifelong love for woodworking, Jay uses his creativity alongside homeowners’ visions to create the perfect living space. One peek into this open-concept model and Jay’s passion quickly becomes apparent. Guests are greeted in the home’s entrance with rich tones and rustic accents—the knotted oak flooring is the perfect base for the light and dark chestnut colored woodwork. To the left of the entryway, the formal/dining space features custom stamped brownish-gold wallpaper that catches the eye and demands a second glance. Kris Patton, ASID from Interiors Joan and Associates, worked with the Pohlads to provide color and decorating influence for the model home. “Kris helped pick out colors and decorative accents like pillows and custom furniture, and I designed the hood vent, things like that,” said Jay. “We have worked with her a lot.” The rich chestnut colors are carried through into the knotty alder stained kitchen cabinets, and an oxidized copper range hood with small clavos adds a rustic touch to the otherwise contemporary space. The large raised island topped with dark granite is the perfect place for families to gather for casual

meals before heading into the adjoining hearth room for conversation, which Jay says can also be used as a second casual dining space. The handmade wood ceiling beams add yet another touch of rustic vibe. “We put detail into everything we do,” said Jay. “And we are able to custom-make a lot of the elements in our homes with the help of our team.” Two main-level fireplaces feature stone, chestnut stained wood and leather paneling, pieced together to create unique looks. The clavos from the range hood are carried over into the custom leather panels above the fireplace and on the window and double door valences. This cozy space opens up to a covered outdoor deck perfect for warm weather entertaining. The functional mud/laundry room area features a custom-made bench and coat rack, as well as a large storage closet. The Pohlad brothers, along with their spouses, RE/MAX Results Realtors Sara and Julie, have become a family business team. “Working together definitely works well for us because we all understand the business,” said Jay. “We also all have the same ambition for providing functional homes for families.” Keeping potential buyers and their needs in mind, this featured home has four second-floor bedrooms, making it perfect for a family with children. Two bedrooms share a Jack and Jill bathroom, and a third bedroom/guest room features a vaulted ceiling and its own adjoining bathroom. These two “hands on” builders create beautiful spaces for everyone in the family to enjoy. The large second-floor master suite is sure to fulfill everything one may have on their wish list, including a large master closet with plentiful shelving and a storage bench, and a spacious master bath finished with spa-like colors and finishes. This Pacific Ridge model home was not only built in a prime location, it is beautiful in design and will function well for any family—it is one-of-a-kind, as are each of Pohlad’s custom-built homes. I will not make the same (failed) resolution

a

s our champagne hangovers fade, the New Year beckons us with the promise of a fresh start – if only we can craft the right resolution and stick to it. Studies show that 45 percent of us make resolutions, but only 8 percent actually achieve them. However strong the intent on Jan. 1, our ability to follow through inevitably peters out. The following January, we find ourselves resetting the same, tired promises – our very own New Year’s Groundhog Day. With failure so pervasive among resolution-setters, Edge deemed it time for a new approach to resolutions. Tapping the expertise of local health and wellness experts, we created anti-resolutions: conventional goals flipped and reshaped into something achievable. Our five health and wellness resolutions may prompt you to rethink what a resolution could – or should – be. Each resolution includes a small, meaningful action easy to employ at home, so your journey begins as soon as you’re ready.

Old resolution:

Lose weight The anti-resolution:

Know your numbers For Heath Murray, co-founder of iThinkFit gym at 156th and Center, it’s a familiar story: People gain a few pounds over the holidays. By New Year’s, it’s time to shed some weight. They join a gym, and when the pounds don’t pour off, they give up. “A lot of people quit because they look at a scale, and they’re not seeing what they want to see,” he said. Murray argues that the scale doesn’t tell the whole story. He urges clients to take a different perspective, one that relies less on weight and more on body composition. Generally speaking, a body with more muscle and less fat is a leaner, stronger, more efficient calorie-burning machine, and reducing body fat yields considerable health benefits. Part of iThinkFit’s approach is to educate clients about body composition and what it means for their health. Using a body composition analyzer, Murray can determine proportionate body fat mass and muscle mass, and even where muscle

mass is distributed in the body. Informed by the analysis, Murray’s next step is to get those body fat and muscle mass numbers to change through a combination of high intensity interval training and weight training. It’s a program that will typically yield a weight loss of one to two pounds per week – a healthful proposition, but one that may seem frustratingly slow for those fixated on pounds alone. Again, here’s where replacing the scale with body composition analysis has an advantage. While the scale may only move a few digits each month, body composition numbers change as body fat drops and lean muscle increases. As people work out, they get stronger; their body composition moves in a more healthy direction. Seeing those positive leaps can offer the motivation that the scale can’t. “If they can continue to see progress, it keeps them on the wagon,” Murray said.

Revamp your cardio

from Heath Murray, co-owner, iThinkFit When it comes to cardio, less can be more. Compared to sustained cardio, high-intensity intervals create a longer caloric after-burn – the calories you burn after the workout is complete. Plus, the shorter duration leaves more time in your day. The following intervals can be done outside or inside on a treadmill, stairmill, elliptical or row machine; you can also use a jump rope or repeat mountain climbers or burpees for the same cardio effect. Plan your cardio exercise on days between weight training sessions; the total workout should be no longer than 45 minutes. 1. Warm up with light to moderate cardio for 10 minutes (just hard enough to break a bit of a sweat). 2. Begin high-intensity intervals. Murray recommends a 1:1 ratio between a nice-andeasy pace and your maximum effort; for example, complete one minute of highintensity cardio followed by one minute of low-intensity cardio. 3. For most people, subtracting age from 220 beats per second can approximate the maximum heart rate for the intervals. 4. Complete 25 total minutes of intervals. 5. Cool down for 10 minutes with lowintensity cardio.

Establish fitness routine

Boredom-busters to try at home

from Kylee Hudson, co-owner, 9Round

The anti-resolution:

Kill routines

One of the keys to keeping resolutions is creating new habits. But while exercising regularly is the right idea, doing the same thing over and over again can backfire. Boredom is one reason people have trouble with New Year’s resolutions related to exercise, said Anthony Hudson, co-owner of 9Round kickboxing near 182nd and Center. To repel exercise ennui, Anthony and wife Kylee keep the workouts fresh. 9Round offers 30-minute workouts with nine stations in a circuit format. Stations incorporate punching and kicking bags, jump ropes, medicine balls, kettle bells and more. The variations are endless. Since opening in October, “the workouts have been different every day,” Anthony said. Anthony and Kylee launched 9Round after failing to find gym classes that

worked with their schedules and still left time for the family. The South Carolina-based company offered a concept they liked. The gym has no class times; people jump in every three minutes, the length of a station. The full-body workout is fast and intense: “You’re in it the whole time,” Anthony said. To boost confidence, 9Round clients are bestowed with fighter nicknames, like Anthony “A-Train” and Kylee “The Hurricane.” Trainers teach proper form and technique, transforming novice, patty-cake swats of the bags to forceful kicks and punches. The approach gets results, the couple said. But it does take time. “Fitness can’t be just a New Year’s resolution type of thing,” Anthony said. However, by switching things up, a regular fitness regimen need not be routine.

Add some variety to your fitness regimen with a mini-circuit at home. 1. Complete nine push-ups/wall punches (normal push-up with a punch tap to the wall, as you come up). 2. Complete nine Everest climbers (a twist on a mountain climber; in a push-up position, bring your knee to your elbow and alternate). 3. Jump rope for 90 seconds. 4. Complete nine jumping jacks. 5. Complete nine lunge to front-kicks. 6. Complete nine crescent kicks over a chair (facing the chair, swing your leg over it). 7. Complete nine burpees. 8. Repeat five times, at a minimum.

Old resolution:

Help others

Love yourself

from Kelli DeWispelare, owner, Sweat, Cycle & Soul

The anti-resolution:

Be selfish

Kelli DeWispelare founded Sweat, Cycle & Soul at 180th and Q as an answer to the widespread cultural pressure to be perfect. Like many women, DeWispelare is familiar with the struggle to achieve the perfect body, be the perfect mother and play the perfect wife. But no matter how hard she worked, she always fell short. “The world has created a belief in many of us that we are not worthy of achieving our dreams or goals,” she said. That notion of never being good enough stymies even well intentioned resolutions, she believes. “If you don’t believe that you can meet your resolution, you’re set up to fail.” Opened one year ago, Sweat, Cycle & Soul offers group spinning, Pilates and yoga classes in a positive atmosphere. For women in particular, the studio offers the space to be selfish and tend to their physical, emotional and spiritual needs. “When you take one hour of your day to nurture both your mind and body, I think we’re all able to be more amazing and give 100 percent in other areas of life,” DeWispelare said. “We

encourage people to be selfish.” Each class begins with an intention, a way to frame thinking and carry people through their workout and the day. The intention sets the tone, such as “without confidence there is no risk, and without risk there is no growth.” DeWispelare uses the theme throughout her spinning classes, challenging exercisers: Where can you push and take the risk? Do you believe? Are you confident you can move those pedals faster?” The approach inspires both in and outside of the studio. DeWispelare believes people are searching for more than just the physical aspect of exercise. Focusing on both mind and body motivates and inspires, bringing clarity to busy lives and schedules. It’s fitness with a dose of life coaching. “I came to a point where I wanted to encourage others to appreciate their body and celebrate it,” she said. “I knew firsthand that the moment you really start loving yourself, you find so much growth in all other areas of your life.”

Meditation can be done at any time of the day, but for some, like Kelli, it might be best when the day is at its end. The meditation encourages us to let go of the “wishing, judging and hoping” feelings we get when we look in the mirror, and instead love ourselves. 1. Sit in an easy, cross-legged position. 2. Close your eyes. Breathe deep breaths, in and out through your nose. 3. On the inhale, recite silently, “I am not a body.” 4. On the exhale, recite silently, “I release my ego.” 5. On the inhale, recite silently, “I am not a body.” 6. On the exhale, recite silently, “I am willing to perceive my body with love.” 7. Repeat, continuing the meditation for two to five minutes. 8. Throughout the day, every time you look in the mirror, think or say, “I love you” in an empowering way. Whether you brush your teeth, wash your hands or see your reflection in a window, think or say, “I love you.”

Old resolution:

Learn something new The anti-resolution:

Know yourself One Tree Yoga owner Jamie Rye offers a counterpoint to the typical resolution dialogue. Like other fitness studios, One Tree Yoga at 144th and Center experiences an uptick in traffic each January for the usual fitness goals: lose weight, get in shape, reduce stress or simply try something new. But those goals don’t belong in yoga practice, Rye says. Yoga practice is simply that: practice. “There are no goals in yoga,” she said. “But a regular yoga class can certainly help you accomplish goals you set in (other areas) of life.” Rather than the aforementioned goals, yoga is the practice of awareness. “If you’re standing on one foot and thinking about your grocery list or your taxes, you’re going to fall over,” Rye said. In yoga, the mind quiets, focusing on the breath and body.

Over time, quieting the mind and paying attention to the body can unlock a sense of self-awareness. As you practice, Rye said, you begin to pay attention to your own patterns and habits. It may start on the mat; you notice your foot is out of alignment, and you adjust it. Then, that awareness could translate to a situation at home or at work, when you notice an aspect in life requiring a change. Life can mimic a yoga practice – a journey to slow the constant churning of thoughts, notice oneself and learn to make changes. “It’s being kind to yourself, but taking an honest look at what’s happening and how you can improve it,” she said. Other effects of yoga can include improvement in muscular, cardiovascular, nervous, lymphatic and even digestive systems, Rye said. When leaving practice, “your body feels good and your brain feels good.”

Practice awareness

from Jamie Rye, owner, One Tree Yoga Viparita karani, or legs up the wall, is a restorative yoga pose that relieves tired and cramped legs and feet. It stretches the back of the body and front of the torso, calming the mind. It releases the limbs and aids in lymph circulation and digestion and helps with insomnia. 1. Find an open wall space. Ideally, practice with a folded blanket or pillow under your pelvis. 2. With your buttocks against the wall, extend your legs upward. 3. Take slow, deep breaths in and out of the nose. On the inhales, think about breathing all the way down to your legs. 4. To stretch different parts of the leg, try pose variations. Bring your feet together and let your knees go wide. Or, move your legs wide in a V along the wall. 5. Remain in the pose, for five to 15 minutes.

Save money The anti-resolution:

Invest in health Some items are worth the investment, like health. Fitness Together, near 180th and Center, offers a healthful splurge with personal training in a private setting. Trainers offer clients strength, cardio and nutrition programs tailored to their needs and goals, no matter the age or fitness level. The one-on-one attention offers multiple advantages. Because programs are customized, issues like a bad back or touchy knee are accommodated, manager Roland Garcia said. The exercise expertise isn’t the only benefit. With a coach and cheerleader by their side, people work harder. “The two or three repetitions that your trainer pushes you to do – those are what matter most,” Garcia said. “It’s like having a coach that tells you to put your head down. The coach can motivate you, give you the right goal and the discipline to stay consistent.” One reason people may fail in their

weight loss goals, Garcia said, is they expect too much too fast. When their high expectations aren’t met, it becomes easy to make excuses and give up. Part of the Fitness Together process is helping individuals set smaller goals for success. The secret is establishing achievable goals and providing the accountability mechanisms to foster success. One of those mechanisms is the trainer himself. Another mechanism is a training partner – a family member or friend. To harness the power of the “we’re in this together” mentality, Fitness Together also offers private group training for two to four individuals. A final accountability measure is the cost itself. When you invest in personal training, Garcia said, you tend to show up. Once there, the trainers offer the motivation to help you succeed. He added, “Anyone can be successful, as long as you push yourself to a place you’re uncomfortable with.”

“You Deserve Total Comfort”

Make your workout more successful

from Roland Garcia, Fitness Together manager 1. Make it fun. Fitness shouldn’t be a chore. 2. Get a partner. “Misery enjoys company,” Garcia quips. If you’re struggling, it’s a little easier with a partner. You’ll also work harder. 3. Add something new to your workout, such as basketball or racquetball. 4. Bring your future goals into the present. A cruise in your future? Buy a swimsuit now that you see yourself wearing in the future. 5. Change it up. If you’re used to working in a gym, try running outside.

our adventure

For photographer Jen Edney, the best adventures require waterproof gear

t

hings Jen Edney can do: 1. Convince the French skipper of Energy Team France to sail over her in a 44-foot long catamaran. Tread water like crazy to stay in the exact same position (so as not to get run over by other boats, yet remain in appropriate position to get run over by Team France). Take amazing photos of the boat’s underside as it flies directly overhead, the hull within grasp. Earn thousands of fans when the picture hits Facebook. 2. Spend 20 days aboard a VOR 70 Maserati with seven men speaking five languages in approximately 70 feet of space. Do this as a test of your physical stamina, your mental fortitude and your ability to tackle more voyages. 3. Apply to be media crewmember with the first all-women’s team to compete in the Volvo Ocean Race, a ninemonth yacht race around the world in a 70-foot sailboat with narrow hammocks, basic latrine, no change of clothes and freeze-dried fare. Anxiously await news from your dream job.

Things Jen Edney cannot do (except for very special friends): 1. Weddings. “Shooting a wedding? That’s out of my comfort zone,” says the photographer, who resides in Waterloo when not on assignment around the globe. Edney, 31, has a knack for pushing boundaries. She has voyaged over 40,000 nautical miles and visited more than 30 countries. Her photos have landed in the Los Angeles Times, ESPN, ABC, CBS, Sail magazine and Men’s Journal, to name a few. Over the past years, Edney has grown from a landlocked Nebraska girl to a fully immersed sailing photographer. Surprisingly, the first step in her journey was curing her fear of the ocean. Although she grew up waterskiing lakes, Edney dreaded the sea and its unknown depths. A 60-day Outward Bound course sailing would do the trick, she figured. After graduating from Creighton University, she traveled to the Carib-

As she sailed and took pictures, a skill she had first honed with her father on family vacations, she realized photography was her calling. She soaked up the craft. At a workshop, she met nature photographer and Nebraska native Thomas Mangleson and nabbed an internship. She took classes at the Brooks Institute of Photography in Venture, Calif., where she landed an internship with a local newspaper. Her daily assignment was shooting Zac Sunderland, a teenage sailor angling at becoming the first American under 18 to sail the world. As people took notice of the teenage Magellan, they also took notice of Edney. After seeing her work, a documentary crew tapped her as the still photographer during Zac’s journey. The assignment took her to ports across the globe to document his 2009 quest. It proved to be a turning point. After shooting Zac on a stop in South Africa, Edney needed a way back to the Americas. She found a guy in route to the Caribbean on a narrow boat. Edney weighed the

Since 2010, Mackevicius has honed 7M’s offerings of comfort fusion dishes. The chef samples cuisines and flavors to create signature items, like the Caribbean chicken and fish taco entrees. The play continues with rotating seasonal dishes, like the jerk mahi-mahi and horseradish ancho rib-eye. 7M patrons get to see recipe development firsthand at 7M’s popular Wednesday@1 series. Each week, customers are the judges as chefs present candidates for the restaurant’s weekly specials. After trying the dishes, the public shares with the chefs their likes and dislikes on presentation, taste and creativity. The chefs then have the opportunity to rework the dish to make it a standout. Not all concoctions get the thumbs up. Peanut butter gnocchi, peanut butter chili chicken, and a peanut butter and jelly Frenchie with pork all received lukewarm receptions, Mackevicius recalls. While a half-dozen dishes stay on the menu year-round, most of it changes to reflect seasonal ingredients and palates. Dishes that make the cut represent the best among hundreds of Wednesday@1 specials and often feature curiously matched ingredients. Take the winter menu’s Thai chicken ravioli, a surprising fusion of Thai and Italian inspiration. Spinach ricotta ravioli is covered in a creamy, sweet chili Alfredo sauce and paired with chicken in a peanut sauce alongside tangy pickled jalapeño and carrots. Like many 7M offerings, “all these random ingredients come together and work,” Mackevicius said. The evolving menu and weekly specials create excitement among 7M’s customer base, owner George Jacobs said. A weekly wine, beer and spirits menu, curated by manager Robyn Davis, accompanies the changing list of specials. Mackevicius grew up in the food industry. passion for food was launched in college, back when he needed a job and a hotel chef took him under his wing. As Mackevicius creates a dish, he draws upon his 14 years of experience at various Omaha restaurants. But much of his vision is straight from the imagination. “It’s flavors and combinations that on paper don’t make sense, but on the plate, it works,” he said. “It can be a little out there, but that’s what makes us unique – the ‘out there-ness’ of it.” The key to making disparate ingredients work is finding the right bridge between them, according to the chef. The right ingredient can tie seemingly incompatible items together, creating the unexpected. Noteworthy at 7M is Mackevicius’ keen awareness of food allergies and intolerances. The restaurant offers a variety of gluten-free dishes, and because 7M makes everything from scratch, it’s easy for chefs to create personalized menus. As another interactive feature, the restaurant offers a chef’s table experience for small- to medium-sized groups. Each dish and its ingredients are announced, and between dishes the chef chats with guests, shares insights on the process and tells the stories behind the dishes. The table experience is emblematic of the kind of engagement 7M seeks to foster between chef and the public. 7M is “breaking the kitchen door down” and bringing the chef to the table, Mackevicius said – an experience that keeps people coming back for more.

Omaha is introduced to contemporary cosmetic surgery

Dr.

Gerard Stanley is fulfilling the dreams of many — to have a minimally invasive cosmetic procedure in a beautiful spa-like environment, all with a shorter recovery time. Stanley has taken his extensive medical knowledge and training and is making this an option at SCULPT: Contemporary Cosmetic Surgery, one of the only practices in the area to offer patients a wide variety of minimally invasive surgeries and treatments. As the Medical Director and Cosmetic Surgeon at SCULPT, Dr. Stanley is revolutionizing the way people approach cosmetic surgery here in the Midwest. Opening their doors in November 2012, Dr. Stanley and his team of three skilled physicians let new methods and technology lead the way in their practice. “Our specialization is offering people minimally invasive cosmetic procedures,” said Dr. Stanley. “Our recovery time is dramatically reduced because of our methods, as well as the kinds of anesthesia that we use. It is all more technically difficult, but our patients are very happy with the results.”

Dr. Stanley followed in his grandfather and father’s medical footsteps and is now a third generation physician. As a magna cum laude graduate of Creighton University, he completed his residency in rural family medicine and surgery at North Colorado Medical Center where he served as the Chief Resident in his last year. From there, he spent time in the National Health Service Core doing charitable work in the rural Midwest before completing a rotational fellowship in minimally invasive and cosmetic surgical procedures. The knowledge he gained from his mentors gave him the drive to open a practice geared toward making people feel good while utilizing the most innovative technologies. Many SCULPT cosmetic surgery patients are mothers, looking to better themselves without the risk of going under general anesthesia. Another perk of using contemporary methods is the reduced recovery time. “All of the doctors here have young children and we all have the understanding that the recovery time is a game-changer,” said Dr. Stanley. “If I wanted something done, it would be nice to know that I could have a procedure on Friday and be back to work on Monday.” All procedures are done in the offices’ two spa-like operating room suites, and after, patients are led into a comfortable recovery room. Most patients stand up and walk into their recovery room, and depending on the procedure, are ready to go home within 10 to 45 minutes. “We have had some tummy tuck patients walk out of the office, get in their car

Dr. Douglas Niemann, Dr. David Vogel and Dr. James Smith offer several options to eliminate uncomfortable symptoms and unwanted spider and varicose veins. “We have the newest high-frequency laser that provides the best treatment for poorly functioning veins,” said Dr. Smith. “SCULPT was the perfect fit for us because Dr. Stanley is also utilizing some of the most innovative and newest technologies.” Performing vein procedures at SCULPT is rewarding for Dr. Smith. “If a patient has painful varicose veins or a cosmetic issue, he or she is not very happy. We have the ability to completely fix the problem or make it significantly better. This makes the patients happy, and in turn, makes us happy. Making patients feel better about themselves is very rewarding for us as physicians.” Even if cosmetic surgery or spider vein treatments are not in your immediate future, SCULPT: Contemporary Cosmetic Surgery offers other feel-good options in The SPA at SCULPT, including: Swedish, deep tissue, hot stone, and lymphatic drainage massages, body and

facial waxing, facials, chemical peels, body treatments, and reflexology. The SPA is a relaxing retreat; all rooms are designed to calm and sooth customers. The lounge furniture and colors are comfortable and tranquil, and it’s the perfect place to relax or spend time with friends. “I’m really proud of our spa, we have an exceptional staff,” said Dr. Stanley. “We have lots of spa parties; people come in with family and friends to get different treatments, have BOTOX® parties. It’s a great space to just relax and have a good time.” When patients visit SCULPT: Contemporary Cosmetic Surgery, or The SPA at SCULPT, they are getting a whole spalike experience. Dr. Stanley’s goal was to create a place where men and women can get everything done in a relaxing atmosphere with safe and effective results. “Cosmetic surgery really embraces technology and is about the best and safest way for patients to have cosmetic work done,” he said. “We really want to educate people and empower them to take care of themselves, and I hope that we’re on the front-side of a revolution in surgical techniques.”

BLOOD

Johnny Trueblood | Age 16 | Elkhorn South While it’s been cold outside, it’s been red-hot inside area gyms as the Elkhorn South Boys’ Basketball Team has fought off some of Class B’s strongest challengers to maintain their #1 Class B ranking. With a solid nucleus of experienced players, the Storm look to march toward the school’s first ever Basketball State Championship, and they’ll depend heavily on Junior Guard Johnny Trueblood. As the team’s top bench player last year, Trueblood gained some valuable experience becoming known for his constant hustle and ability to get to the rim. His play didn’t go unnoticed as he was selected Honorable Mention All-State at the end of the 2012-2013 season. “Johnny has an amazing knack for the game on the offensive end. Defenders have a hard time staying in front of him,” said Elkhorn South Head Coach Alex Bahe when describing his level of play. With a goal of eventually playing college basketball, Trueblood has a strong dedication to the sport, playing over the summer with Omaha Sports Academy’s Omaha Crusaders National Team in an effort to improve year-round. He has quickly become a fan favorite of both students and parents alike, and his love for the game is visible as he often wears his emotions on his sleeve when the game is on the line. Perhaps as impressive as his oncourt performance are his accomplishments in the classroom, where he carries a 3.9 GPA and is an Honor Roll student. Johnny is the son of Tom and Sheila Trueblood of Elkhorn. He has an older brother Tommy, who is a Senior at South and a member of the Varsity Basketball team as well. He also has a younger sister Jenna, who is a seventh grader at Elkhorn Ridge Middle School.

solo FLYING

Kennedy Hughes | Age 9 | St. Wenceslaus At the age of 2, Kennedy Hughes heard her calling at the dance studio and hasn’t missed a beat since. Hughes had a busy schedule at a young age, involved in both cheer and competitive dance. Two years ago, with the encouragement of Stephanie Pearson, owner of Nebraska Dance, Hughes went to dancing full time and left cheer behind. Hughes loves and participates in all disciplines of dance: ballet, tap, jazz, hip hop, musical theater, acro (a style of dance that combines classical dance technique with precision acrobatic element), and lyrical. Her favorite style of dance is lyrical, which fuses ballet with contemporary dance techniques. She started competing as a lyrical soloist in 2012, where her solos have earned her high point awards, top overall rankings and numerous awards. Last April, at the Showstopper’s Regional Dance Competition, Hughes won a Crystal award for highest overall score and won the overall title for her age division. She also took first place overall at the Regional BravO! Dance and Talent Competition and was awarded the regional title for Miss Petite Bravo. This title awards both high scores and showmanship. This past June, Hughes traveled with her team at Nebraska Dance to Daytona Beach, FL to compete in her first national competition. She was awarded a double platinum score (highest possible rank) and won in the lyrical competition. This January, Hughes will have the opportunity to go with a ballet trio from Nebraska Dance to the YAGP (Youth American Grand Prix) in Dallas, the world’s largest ballet competition. She looks forward to the opportunity to add to her collection of accolades for her impressive talent in competitive dance. Kennedy is the daughter of Erik and Diane Hughes. She has three brothers: Kylon - 21 (currently stationed in Ft Drum, NY with the US Army), Dillon - 13 and Devon - 12. Her dogs Lulu (a Yorkie) and Zeus (miniature Australian Shepherd) are the most frequent spectators of her improv dances at home.

our little secret

daniel muller

When friends Brian Zahm, Karsten Storm and Phil Page realized they all shared a passion for duck hunting, they decided to start a hunting club to share their knowledge and experience with other local hunters. “About 4 years ago, the three of us started Fowl Play, a local hunting club,” said Zahm. Other hunting buddies help them out when needed. “It is always us three, but we also have about five other guys who help out regularly,” he explained. These die hard waterfowlers hunt as often as possible in the Valley, Waterloo and Elkhorn area and enjoy the opportunity to share their love of bird hunting with others. They often donate the meat of their birds to the Elkhorn Wild Game Feed and enjoy making jerky to share with local farmers to thank them for their support of the club. For the last couple of years, the guys of Fowl Play have been filming their hunts, with plans to eventually sell as guides for the ultimate bird hunting experience.
