of love is upon us, a time to recognize that significant person in our lives and to offer a token of our love and admiration on Valentine’s Day. Flowers, candy and cards are the norm, in what has become the second largest marketed holiday behind Christmas. What often gets lost, however, is the uttering of those three simple words…“I love you.” For some, these are words shared on a daily basis, and for others it’s only on occasion. While many rely on Hallmark to deliver the message, I encourage you to tell your significant other what your relationship means to you and that you don’t take them for granted. Maybe your version of the message won’t rhyme, sound as smooth or be spelled out in red glitter, but the words will be your own. Whether you express your gratitude for
the many years of love you’ve shared or you affirm your promise of love as you continue your journey together, let the words be your own. So with this said, it’s time to open up, spread the love, and let those who are most important to you know how you feel. Trust me, these words are always appreciated. Jack Shotbolt Editor in Chief

Edge editor’s custom home brings two families together
hen Jack Shotbolt drove through West Omaha neighborhoods, he scoured the streets for the home he wasn’t sure existed. He sought a place that could bring he and fiancée Jennifer Matthes’ families together, a place where their five kids could have their own space while still coming together as one family.

Then he saw it: A newly-framed house with a layout that could be tweaked to meet the family’s needs. Three bedrooms upstairs, a master on the main, and the potential for two bedrooms in the basement meant that everyone would have a little bit of privacy, but the open layout and multiple living room areas left plenty of spaces for togetherness. Shotbolt had previously felt reluctant to custom-build a home – with five kids between them, their families’ schedules were packed enough without an extra project. But finding an existing home that met their needs was tough. This house, in the early stages of construction, spoke to him. In the yard was a sign for John Caniglia Homes. “The layout, the potential and the builder” convinced Shotbolt to call the next day to see the blueprints. Together with Cory Caniglia, the couple worked to tweak the design of the house, originally intended as a spec home. They added a second bedroom and bathroom to the basement; swapped a linen closet for a secondary laundry room on the second floor; and re-envisioned interior finishes. They selected a color palate of warm neutrals, including chocolate browns, rust and sand, reflected in natural stone and abundant woodwork inside and out.

Caniglia listened to the couple’s ideas, incorporating them into the building process to give them the home they envisioned. The ability to collaborate on the building process is what allows the company to build homes people continue to love, he said. “If we allow them to put their ideas into their home, it gives them a sense of uniqueness or pride that they can call their own,” he said. Customized finishes include floating cedar beams in the kitchen, knotty alder cabinets throughout the home, a homework/office loft with built-in desks, custom-built wrought iron handrails, and distressed walnut shutters (a project Jack took on himself). The couple drew from design websites and the Street of Dreams to select materials and patterns. Inspired by “a modern twist on French country,” they selected materials and décor with rustic warmth. Every room offers unique accents. In the kitchen, oversized wrought-iron pendant chandeliers hang between the floating beams. The intricate backsplash was painstakingly replicated from a pattern spotted on a website. In the master bathroom, the floor tile incorporates a pebble border, another example of how small details add visual interest to the home. The covered back porch extends the living space outdoors. In the backyard, a 25-by-30 foot basketball court is a kid

About the HERS Index The Home Energy Rating System (HERS) Index measures a home’s energy efficiency. Jesse Krivolavek of American Energy Advisors explains that the index works like a golf score: The average home is a HERS 100, and each point higher or lower represents a percentage point of energy usage differential. The lower the score, the better. For example, a house with a HERS 50 rating uses 50 percent less energy than the average home. Tax credits on energy-efficient systems, increased awareness and a consumer desire to save money and reduce their environmental impact is driving use of the HERS index. “Sometime in the near future, HERS ratings on homes will be as common as MPG stickers on cars,” Krivolavek said. Some of the variables included in an energy rating are: • All exterior walls (both above and below grade) • Floors over unconditioned spaces (like garages or cellars) • Ceilings and roofs • Attics, foundations and crawlspaces • Appliances and lighting • Windows and doors, vents and ductwork • HVAC systems, water heating system and thermostat Homeowner benefits: • Less energy use and lower operating costs • Reduced environmental impact • Improved comfort • Better health through improved indoor air quality • Increased home value
favorite. There’s room for a trampoline, too. Being so hands-on in the design process upped the ante on the home. Both Shotbolt and Matthes were anxious to see how their ideas would play out. When the house was finally ready, Shotbolt was stunned to see their vision come to life. “Everything we took a chance on ended up better than we thought it would,” he said. building techniques, the family also enjoys significant energy savings. Highly efficient insulation, a high-performing geothermal heating and cooling system and energy-efficient windows keep the home comfortable year-round. The money saved in reduced energy bills will cover the cost of the initial investment in five or six years. In fact, the home is so efficient that it received a rating of 37 on the Home Energy Rating System (HERS) Index, the industry standard by which a home’s energy efficiency is calculated. A typical new home scores an average of 100; the lower the score, the better. “Thirty-seven is extremely low and
unusual,” said Jesse Krivolavek of American Energy Advisors, the company that assessed the home’s energy efficiency. “We test about 1,000 homes regionally per year, and very few make it under 40.” Tax credits, increased awareness and a desire to reduce environmental footprint are driving more homeowners locally and nationally to consider energy efficiency in their homes, Krivolavek notes. Moreover, energy efficient homes are more comfortable and durable, and they have better air quality that fosters better health. “All of these can impact the value of the home,” he said.
These and other customizations have created a home tailored perfectly for this large family. In the kitchen, a large, round table seats all seven family members – a place for everyone to come together before splitting off for separate activities. On a typical evening, after eating a meal together, Shotbolt and Matthes might spend time by the linear fireplace, while the girls do artwork in the loft, and the boys play video games with friends in the basement. It’s a home that meets all of their needs. “It was so much of us,” Matthes said of the custom-build process. “It made it that much more personal and meaningful.”

Story by krystal overmyer Photos by Daniel Muller
Three matches made in Omaha inding the perfect partner is a pursuit that occupies many singles’ lonely hearts. No matter our age, we seek connection – a partner in crime; a lifelong companion; a soul mate to grow old with. But in today’s busy world, finding lasting love can seem more elusive than ever. “Dating is not easy and not always fun,” said Courtney Hawkins, owner and matchmaker at Omaha Love, a local dating service. “It can be hard, exhausting and discouraging. We are living in a world where people like instant gratification. This is rarely the case when looking for love.”

5 tips for your first date From Omaha Love 1. Dress to impress (including good grooming). 2. Avoid touchy topics, such as past relationships, religion and politics. 3. Be confident. Don’t doubt yourself or show insecurities. 4. Don’t take over the conversation. Ask questions. 5. Don’t invade your date’s personal space. It’s a first date. Keep it classy.
Hawkins works with men and women of all ages who seek a quality mate. As a matchmaker, she pairs clients with potential chemistry. But she also coaches her clients on how to rethink finding love. Contrary to the “love at first sight” notion, lasting love can take time to blossom. And it is more likely to happen when people are happy with themselves and confident about who they are, even if they are missing love in their life. “Everyone needs and wants to be loved,” she said. “I have met many people from many different walks of life over the years, and the one thing they all are seeking is love. Their lives are not truly fulfilled until they have someone to share them with.” The following three couples sought love amid a variety of circumstances. Their relationships are proof that while love may not be easy, the right ingredients and the right circumstances can come together to create a beautiful relationship.

Doug Doug Graham, 41, had given up on feeling romantic love at his age. Was it possible, the clinical social worker wondered, that being “love struck” was something only for teenagers and twenty-somethings? He went on dates, but they were just OK. After more than a year with Omaha Love, he was ready to quit. Then his matchmaker excitedly told him about Mandy. Something about her tone made Doug pay attention. He set up a time to meet Mandy Nease, a 37-year-old adjudications officer, at the Starlite Lounge in Lincoln. When the appointed hour arrived, Doug waited for Mandy in an unwittingly stained T-shirt and jeans. His attire didn’t stop him from giving her a big hug when she arrived. “It was a really good hug,” Mandy remembers.
& Mandy
That hug developed into an epic, eight-hour first date. Drinks turned into dinner. Dinner turned into drinks. Chatting with Mandy was so easy, Doug thought. It was comfortable. He walked her to her car; they both hopped in and kept talking. Then, there was a kiss. Mandy realized quickly she really liked this man. On their second date at a comedy club, they talked through the comedian’s entire act despite being publicly shushed. Mandy remembers showing Doug a picture of her children and Doug’s enthusiastic response. “I was worried that my kids would be seen as an obstacle,” she said. Doug’s infectious energy helped her let go of her worries. Later, when Doug met her children, she watched as he played kickball with her 3-year-old son and threaded friendship
bracelets with her 6-year-old daughter. Mandy, normally so practical and logical, was falling in love. “It was a mush factory after that,” Mandy said. Doug’s own feelings were helping him realize that what he thought was impossible was actually happening. In Mandy, he found a peer who was intelligent, beautiful and caring; someone he could laugh with. With her, he realized what he had been missing all along. He had friends and family, but was lacking that one integral piece. “It’s a contrast between not having a lot of hope and developing a hard exterior, being practical and functional and living life, but loveless,” he said. Feeling romantic love was like feeling full of warmth – that missing piece. Six months later, the two continue to enjoy what Doug calls a dream come true.

chip
Mary Ellen, 64, met Chip, 67, for the first time at 7:30 p.m. on Sept. 1, 2011, at Jimi D’s. She listened to his stories – partial stories, because his dating coach had previously encouraged the chatty Chip not to put it all on the table. Then: “He asked if he could hold my hand, and that just melted me,” Mary Ellen said. A week later, Chip Mackenzie asked Mary Ellen to go on a driving trip to the Carolinas and Florida to visit his family. Mary Ellen said yes. Less than a month later, they departed on a 10-day vacation. She drove; he talked to keep her awake. “It was so comfortable,” Mary Ellen remembers. “I felt like I had known him for a long time.” Remembers Chip: “There was a special chemistry.” Married in Aug. 2012, the two have shared many trips together since that first adventure. Their love story, they say, is unlikely. Prior to meeting, the two shared no mutual friends. Before retiring, they worked different jobs (she as a Lucent technician and union officer; he as a biochemist and software
&

developer). He holds a Ph.D., and she never went to college. But a mutual desire to find a relationship led them both to Omaha Love. Chip, who had lost a previous wife to cancer, sought companionship. Mary Ellen, who was divorced, was open to the possibility of a relationship. She had filed away an Omaha Love ad for months; one day around her birthday, she decided to give a present to herself and date again. In each other, the two have formed an easy partnership. When Chip needs a break during a visit with family, Mary Ellen jumps in to lead the conversation. Mary Ellen takes care of the cooking and cleaning, while Chip, who had polio as a child and is now in a wheelchair, manages their finances. He’s a reliable talker; she’s a good listener. But there were some issues to navigate initially. In the beginning, Chip wondered whether two people with such long relationship histories could make it work this late in life. Decades of marriage make their mark on a person. For Chip, one of those marks was losing a spouse: he remembers staying
by his late wife’s bedside in the days before she died, singing the song they danced to at their wedding. After her death, he thought about how he wanted to view their marriage. “How could you look at it as less than a blessing?” His belief in the value of marriage, despite its ups and downs, led him to want a companion again. Chip also thought he could treat Mary Ellen better than people in her past. Mary Ellen remembers on that first trip together, a faulty GPS led them down a less-traveled mountain road. When they finally got back to the freeway, a front tire skimmed a curb, blowing out the tire. She waited to be berated, but he turned to her and smiled. “It’s OK. None of us are hurt. It’s not a problem.” The two look forward to growing old together. On the horizon is a trip to California to spend time with Chip’s mother. In the meantime, the two stay busy with hobbies and the occasional Hallmark movie. Chip notes that their relationship is just beginning. “The more we are together, the better what we have will be,” he said.

WILL Will Austin, 60, wasn’t interested in a dating service. An associate professor at the University of Nebraska at Omaha, he built a career teaching students how to be teachers. As a single dad, he raised two kids to be good men. For the most part, he was content. “I was at the point when (I thought), ‘I would like to be in a relationship, but I can deal with being alone for the rest of my life if that’s how it turns out.’” His coworkers at UNO thought otherwise. One colleague told him about how Omaha Love offered a different product than the usual dating websites. “One small part of me thought maybe she had a point,” he said. Still, “I kept putting up the front: ‘I’m fine just the way I am.’” His colleague signed him up anyway. That’s how Will met Gillian, a 50-year-old Brit who is his opposite – but also his perfect complement. Their first date almost didn’t happen. When Omaha Love matched the two together, Will initially declined – he was in the middle of a major grant proposal at work. But something told him he should follow up, even if it was his last try at making dating work. When they met at Jones Bros.

Cupcakes, the conversation was full of laughter. “It was easy,” recalls Gillian Austin, a regional sales manager for a hotel group. “Even if there were a few silent moments, they weren’t awkward moments. It felt natural.” Will takes a more humorous perspective: “I knew that it was going to work out because when I walked her out to her car, she had a TrailBlazer. And I had a TrailBlazer. It was fate.” Despite the twin vehicles, Gillian and Will insist they have a lot of differences. She grew up in England; he, in Iowa. She’s the planner; he’s so laidback he’s “almost prone.” Said Gillian: “He has a lot of patience. I have none.” Said Will: “Gill has a lot of style. I have none.” They make up for their different backgrounds and personalities with good communication and shared activities. When one is upset, the other notices, and they aren’t afraid to talk about testy issues. Both have close relationships with their children, all in their 20s. They enjoy exploring new local restaurants, traveling and cooking. They like to entertain, bringing their diverse groups of friends together to see what happens. “Because of the
fact that we are different people, we’re better together than we are apart,” Will said. The relationship progressed naturally. “We just kind of fell into it,” Gillian recalls. In June 2013, three years after they met, the two were married in a small ceremony at Spezia. This June, the couple is planning a bigger celebration in honor of their one-year anniversary – an event that will bring together Gillian’s family from across the pond, their four children and dozens of friends and colleagues. They will celebrate the fact that different people of different backgrounds can come together and make a relationship work. “Things are better when you’re a couple and you have a partner,” Gillian said. Will is her someone to come home to, to cook for, to take care of. For Will, who always had a plan for being a good father and building a good career, Gillian fills a lingering yearning for someone to share life with. “Being with Gillian has allowed me the opportunity to be complete by giving of myself totally, without restraint or second thoughts,” he said. “I think everybody longs for that. Even George Clooney.”

Group fitness instructor found the strength to heal
e
ach day is a gift. No one is a bigger believer in this motto than Angie Jorgensen of Elkhorn. Grateful for her husband, her children, her family, and her community, she is thankful to be alive. As an active runner and group fitness instructor, Angie has always been aware of her health and well-being; so when she woke up on the morning of December 7, 2012 not feeling well, she figured it was maybe the flu. Little did she know this day would be the beginning of her struggle to survive a rare condition.

Angie has been a fitness instructor for more than 20 years and has enjoyed her time leading Zumba/Dance Jam for over six years at Lifetime Fitness. “I love the classes because they are sweaty, fat-burning dance parties,” she said. “Your hour workout flies by. What’s not to love?” She also enjoys her full-time position as a sales director with Mary Kay. She and her husband Jon were high school sweethearts, but their lives took different paths after graduation. “We met back up at a 25-year high school reunion and made a pact to be friends for life. We were married a year later.” The couple has four children: Alexis, Garrett, Josh and Justin. Just five years into their marriage, Jon’s love for Angie had him fighting for her heart. “I woke up on December 7th and felt really lousy,” said Angie. “It quickly went from feeling like I was coming down with the flu to eventually fighting to breathe.” Jon was, by chance, at home 42 |

after canceling a trip. “She said ‘help me’ and she has never said that before,” he said. The couple rushed to the emergency room at Lakeside Hospital, where the staff quickly recognized Angie’s critical state. “I remember getting there, sitting in the wheel chair and barely being able to stay awake,” said Angie. “My blood pressure was extremely high. The last thing I remember is grabbing Jon’s hand. I said ‘through thick or thin’ and then I woke up from a coma a week later.” Thinking about the details of that week still brings Jon to tears. Shortly after arriving at the hospital, he was told they needed to get Angie to the Cardiac Cath Lab. “Thirty minutes or maybe an hour went by and the doctor came out and said that things had taken a turn for the worse. They had been giving Angie CPR for the last 15-20 minutes,” recalls Jon. As the medical staff worked to bring his wife back to life, Jon was told
that if they stabilized her, she would be LifeFlighted to the University of Nebraska Medical Center. At this point, two of their children and other family members had joined Jon in the waiting room. In twos, Angie’s family went in to say their goodbyes – not knowing if she would survive the trip. “Our daughter Alexis told my mom not to worry, that she saw an angel by my side,” said Angie. Angie arrived at UNMC with her heart functioning at only 5 percent. She was immediately hooked up to Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation (ECMO), a treatment in which a machine provides oxygen to patients whose heart and lungs cannot function on their own. The doctors’ goal at this point was to get Angie’s heart strong enough to withstand a heart transplant, if needed, because her condition was still unknown. In order to keep Angie stable, she was put into an induced coma.

After several days, Angie’s heart began to function and doctors knew then that a heart transplant would not be needed; although they were still puzzled by what had caused all of this. They took her off the ECMO machine, but once again, her blood pressure quickly escalated. After many tests and scans, an MRI showed that Angie had a tumor on an enlarged adrenal gland. With the help of a specialist in Maryland, she was diagnosed with having a pheochromocytoma, a rare tumor of adrenal gland tissue. The tumor had caused a massive overproduction of adrenaline, which is what caused the life-threatening hypertension and cardiac arrest. “I had never had high blood pressure,” said Angie. “All I know is that I was hanging by a thread.” After a terrifying week, Angie woke from the coma feeling confused and unaware of all that her body had withstood. “I thought people were playing a bad joke,” she said. “I could not walk or use my hands; I didn’t know who the President was…I was kind of a hot mess, basically.” On top of everything, she learned that she had suffered at least two strokes and now had to overcome pneumonia, which was especially painful

due to a broken sternum and ribs caused by CPR. She also was hooked up to a dialysis machine. Spirits were lifted when Angie was transferred to the Madonna Rehabilitation Center in Lincoln on December 21, 2012. “I hit a point where I just missed my kids,” she said. “I had to wear a defibrillator vest in case I went into cardiac arrest, and they agreed to let Jon drive me there. Day by day, things started to get better.” A full schedule of physical and speech therapy kept Angie busy, and on Christmas Eve her kidneys were fully functional. “They released me a few days after Christmas and I came home to lots of rehabilitation. The whole goal was to get me strong enough for surgery on March 5. I was a little nervous…they removed my adrenal gland along with the tumor.” Throughout her journey back to health, Angie’s loved ones, friends, co-workers, and community gathered together on Caring Bridge. “It’s a website that one of our good friends set up so that I could post updates on Angie’s health,” said Jon. “Day two in the hospital was when it was started.” The support didn’t stop there: several prayer vigils were held in Angie’s honor, including vigils at the Jorgensen’s church and at Lifetime Fitness. Mary Kay colleagues stepped in and took care of Angie’s clients. After her recovery, Lifetime planned a fundraiser celebrating her triumphant return with a Dance-A-Thon, led by Angie. She has spent the last year getting her groove back and is again leading her Lifetime classes. “I remember it being kind of a challenge to get back into the swing of things,” said Angie. “But everyone was supportive and great. One of my hospital nurses was actually in one of my Zumba classes.” The gratitude Angie feels is immense. “Here we are a year later, and I can’t thank everyone enough, especially Jon,” said Angie. “He was my rock and never left my side…it’s amazing what he did. I cannot express how much I appreciate everything that was done for me. Life is a gift – be fabulous every day.”

Fichepain, who opened French restaurant Le Voltaire with wife Desarae in 2001, continues his tradition of bringing the best of France to West Omaha with the new bakery. The two eateries are tucked in a corner of the Pepperwood Village strip mall at 156th and Dodge streets – a “little corner of France in West Omaha.” Fichepain grew up in a Paris suburb and first learned to love cooking through his mother and grandmothers. As a teenager, he threw a large, five-course New Year’s Eve party for friends – the first inkling that his culinary interests might one day turn into a career. Even though

he would eventually study marketing and economics, the culinary delights of his youth stayed with him. “When you bathe in this great food all the time, you’re bound to be addicted to it.” During his high school years, Fichepain moved to Italy. He was seeking to improve his English skills, and a friend mentioned Omaha as the perfect destination: Since no French people lived in Omaha, he’d have no choice but to learn the language. At the University of Nebraska at Omaha, he met Fremont native Desarae Mueller. She followed him back to France for her own study abroad experience. After living in France for a time, the two moved back to Omaha in 1997, and Cedric started thinking about opening his own restaurant with Desarae. “It was a bet when I came to this location,” he remembers. Back then, fine dining restaurants were concentrated in the Old Market area. The 156th and Dodge intersection was at the very edge of Omaha development. “When we opened, we looked at each other at the first day and thought, ‘What the hell are we doing?’” But Fichepain sensed his gamble would

With Le Voltaire, he envisioned a restaurant that captured the Mediterranean flavor of the south of France while offering a menu that covered the best of all regions of France – plus recipes from his grandmothers. It would be a place where people could feel transported with beautiful dishes, impeccable service and reasonable prices. And they wouldn’t have to drive downtown for the experience. “As soon as you come in, you are in a different world,” he said. “That’s what I wanted to showcase — to make people travel without a passport.” Fichepain says many customers come to Le Voltaire to remember previous travels to France or the Mediterranean. The post allows Fichepain to work with the French consulate to promote the country of France in the Midwest. “It’s an honor to be far away from my country, but still be able to showcase what France has to offer,” he said.

We asked Holly to share her advice on Valentine’s Day gift-giving.
For the new couple: Wood and glass heart box, 5”, by Lawrence and Crane. Retail $99 Heart bowl, 7”, in pomegranate by Julia Knight. Retail $59 What do you do when you are dating? You go out. A lot. Either of these gifts are great items to store dating keepsakes in—movie ticket stubs, pictures, and really any memento from a special night. It’s a great Valentine’s gift because it’s heart shaped and sentimental, but it’s also a low pressure gift because it’s not a piece of jewelry!

TROPHY Jeremy Bader | Age 16 | Millard North
Millard North Junior Jeremy Bader has a long list of accomplishments under his swim cap – for a young man who didn’t cross over into the deep end of the pool until 7th grade, Jeremy’s go-for-it attitude has landed him in first-place, many times. Jeremy’s family has a history of competing in wrestling, boxing and weightlifting. “He comes from a contact sport family,” said Jeff, Jeremy’s father. “So when he said he wanted to try swimming, I was hesitant.” Truth be told, the main reason Jeff was reluctant to support his son’s choice of sport comes from a horrifying event from Jeff’s childhood. When he was a young boy, Jeff lost his little brother in a drowning accident. “We were with some family in Columbus, and we were in little blow up rafts,” he explains. “At one point, I looked behind me and his raft was there but not him. I saw him underneath the water looking up at me, and I went in after him. His finger got caught on the belt loop of my pants. The last thing I remember was hearing a splash, and I passed out before someone grabbed me. All of these people looked for him…they didn’t find him until about four hours later.” After experiencing a tragic loss at such a young age, Jeff has spent his life avoiding the water. “When we had him (Jeremy), he was my first son, so I named him Jeremy in honor of my brother,” said Jeff. “With all my kids, I have been very insistent that no one took them to a river or a lake. I was the biggest worrywart. I didn’t even let them go to the deep end of the pool.” Jeremy learned how to swim when he made the decision to join the junior high swim team. “It’s really the one thing that I enjoy and I am good at,” said Jeremy. “I meet really cool people and have made some really good friends. There is lots of team camaraderie and it’s a lot of fun.” Jeff says his son is a great team leader, but when it’s time for Jeremy to race, he is focused. “He gets in the zone,” said Jeff. “It’s really neat, it’s like he’s a fish in the water. It’s so neat to see him shoot off of that block like a shot from a gun.” Jeremy’s swimming may have come naturally to him, but his dive off the starting block did not. Five years ago as a first year swim team member at Bryan Middle School, he competed in the Backstroke to avoid diving off the starting block. The summer before 8th 78 |

grade, he completed 50 dives every day before hanging out with his friends; and by the time Jeremy’s swim season began he was ready to get on the block and compete in other races. During his 8th grade season, Jeremy and his 200-yard Freestyle Relay team broke the school record, which also broke a 35-year long city record. “It was really cool because it was the finals,” said Jeremy. “Our school was considered the underdogs, so that kind of blew a lot of people’s minds.” Three years ago while attending a swim clinic, Jeremy had the chance to swim with 2008 Olympian Gil Stovall, who was in Omaha for the 2011 Olympic Trials. “Gil also swims Butterfly and he stayed behind for a half hour or so to work with me on my Butterfly,” said Jeremy. “It was really fun. And it was a challenge. He beat me during our race, but it was cool.” The summer before high school, Jeremy joined the Metro Omaha Swim Team and walked away with more than a dozen medals. Jeremy attended Bryan High School his freshman year, breaking the school
record in the 100-yard Butterfly. As a Varsity team member, he was one of three freshmen to letter in the sport and was the only freshman male to qualify for state and state finals. Jeremy transferred to Millard North his sophomore year and qualified for state in the 100yard Butterfly. He also qualified for an international meet in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, where he competed with swimmers from 36 states and three countries — Jeremy placed 20th out of 56 in the 100-meter Butterfly and 13th out of 50 for the 50-meter Butterfly. “I get a lot of feedback from coaches on how hard he works,” said Jeff. “He goes the extra mile in practice and continually pushes himself to improve. He is very dedicated during the season: no soda, candy or fast food. He is the first one in the pool and the last one out.” Now as a junior, Jeremy’s swim season is off to a great start. He once again has qualified for state in the 100-yard Butterfly and has already matched his state time from last year. All in all, Jeremy has accumulated 22 medals, 21 ribbons, two
trophies and a Most Valuable Athlete award. He has broken several pool records at Millard North and has made the Top 10 Best Times list for the 200-yard Individual Medley. Jeff is proud of his son’s accomplishments and encourages his children to strive for what makes them happy, including Jeremy’s desire to swim in college and to become a marine biologist. “Never do I want them to say ‘I wish I would have,’ regardless of what it is,” said Jeff. “I support the best that I can. I would have never known he would be a swimmer, but he’s become a leader in the pool. He’s just a natural.” Jeremy never had the chance to meet his uncle, but he proudly swims in honor of his memory. “My mom says it’s ironic that we lost one to water and now we have one that owns the water,” said Jeff. Jeremy is the son of Jeff and Tammy Bader of Omaha. He has an older sister, Brittany (21) (not pictured); two younger sisters, Janessa (15) and Haley (12); and a younger brother Jake (8). our little secret
Have you heard the phrase “go big or go home”? It’s clearly something Bob Harris of Omaha believes in as his wedding proposal went well beyond the average surprise. After dating Erin Scoggins for over three years, Harris knew it was time to make his move. Once he learned that Omaha Fashion Week’s Finale fell on his fashionista’s birthday, the wheels began to turn. Knowing that Erin loves surprises, Harris couldn’t think of a bigger surprise than proposing on the runway itself. With the help of event organizer Brooke Hudson, plans were starting to take shape and it was time to ask Erin’s father for his permission. “I called her parents in Tennessee (which I hated to do and apologized for asking over the phone, but I only had four weeks to pull it off if it was going to happen). I let them know they should secretly fly in for the event,” said Harris. He invited several of their friends to attend the show, hoping the evening would appear to be nothing more than a night out for her birthday. With the stage set (no pun intended), the event was here before he knew it. With the photographer set to capture the moment, Harris grabbed the microphone from the announcer’s hand and delivered a heartfelt proposal that will be a lasting memory for Erin. After her tearful “yes,” Erin asked “Did you ask my Dad? I wish my parents were here…” – to which Harris replied, “Well, let’s go ask them now.” And there they were, around the corner, anxiously waiting to share this incredible moment with their daughter and future son-in-law. Well done Bob…well done. 80 |
