EDGE

As editor

of Edge, I’m in the lucky position of getting to know many of the inspiring people that grace our pages. For example, this issue features the story of three West Omaha women who are mothers, professionals, and leaders in philanthropy and community service. Their work is making our town a better place to be. We also share the inspiring story of Special Olympics Nebraska. This is a group that’s changing lives across the state through the power of sports. The commitment of the staff and volunteers is incredible, but it’s the passion of the athletes that really shows what a difference this organization makes. On another subject, in this issue we also tackle a topic that tends to make men cringe — men’s health. We found several clinics and health centers in Omaha that are working to make it easier for men to

address some of the health issues men face as we grow older, even if we don’t like to admit it. These are just a few of the stories that you’ll want to read (and share) this issue. We’re always looking for the interesting personalities and stories in our community. Write us or call us — we want to hear from you. Best wishes, Jack Shotbolt Editor in Chief

The one-and-a-half story Tuscan estate-style home is perched on a hill in the wooded community of The Sanctuary, a Lanoha development near 229th Street and West Center Road. Its hilltop location offers scenic views of the tranquil preserve. The home, built in 2008, seamlessly integrates technology with an air of Old World distinction and style. The home features a majestic, framed stone entry and adjacent bistro courtyard. An arched door beckons visitors through the entry that includes a rotunda ceiling and a see-through stone fireplace. Inside, the home offers walls of windows to absorb the skyline views and wildlife. A two-story great room incorporates warm, knotty pine and a stone fireplace — one of six throughout the home. MOTHER OF: Nicholas, 14; Elizabeth, 12; Christopher, 9; Beau, 2; Penelope, 1 PROFESSION: Partner at Kutak Rock LLP law firm VOLUNTEERS WITH: Junior League of Omaha, Child Saving Institute, Joslyn Castle Guild, Omaha Symphony Guild, Lauritzen Gardens LIFE MOTTO: When I’m old and gray, will this matter? If not, it isn’t worth losing sleep over. Lucy Newberry has worked on many fundraisers, but one event in particular stands out: Stand Down for Vets, which gave homeless veterans health services and free items such as sleeping bags, boots, and basic warm clothing. “It was a life-changing experience for me,” she said. Newberry, a partner at law firm Kutak Rock LLP, is committed to supporting several organizations in Omaha. She is a sustaining member of the Junior League of Omaha. Her volunteer work there connected her to the Child Saving Institute Guild, and she has chaired many of the guild’s fundraising events. The mother of five was drawn to the organization’s mission of meeting the needs of at-risk children.

OUR passion Why do you choose to make the time to volunteer? I am blessed beyond explanation, and I feel a personal responsibility to do what I can to enrich my community. I want my children to see me giving back so that they know what it means to be a part of something bigger than themselves. What are the most important lessons you want your kids to learn? Everyone deserves to be treated with dignity and respect, no matter their circumstance. I want my children to understand that it isn’t always writing a check, but rather jumping into the trenches and being willing to look people in the eye and convey to them that despite where they may find themselves at the moment, they are worth something. How do you balance your family’s needs, your professional and volunteer obligations and still make time for you? There is no such thing as total balance, particularly when you are trying to manage a large family, partnership at a large law firm, and active community involvement. Number one, my family comes first. I try to involve my children when I can with volunteering (like spending time every year volunteering at

Child Saving Institute’s Touch-A-Truck “friend-raiser”). I work reasonable hours at the office and sometimes I need to work after the kids go to sleep, but I am lucky to work for a firm that has an expectation that attorneys and associated professionals endeavor to have reasonably balanced lives. And my volunteering is almost always done alongside women who I consider to be dear friends. Whether it is chairing a fundraiser, asking for donations, or working at an event, you’ll usually see a number of my friends and colleagues right by my side. How do you get the kids involved in volunteering? I find some way that the kids will really enjoy being involved. My oldest, Nicholas, has worked the bounce houses at Touch-A-Truck for a number of years. My daughter Libby helped paint clown faces at Touch-A-Truck. They’ve each helped me stuff envelopes for fundraisers more times than they care to count and have helped stuff guest bags for multiple events. Lauritzen Gardens held an Easter egg hunt this year, and Nicholas, Libby and Christopher helped me stuff 2,000 candy eggs. Find a way that they can help and run with it!

Kate Schafer, 35 MOTHER OF: Emma, 13; Jack, 8; Sam, 7 ENTREPRENEUR BEHIND: Fleurish, a floral design company VOLUNTEERS WITH: Race for the Cure, Junior League of Omaha, Rose Theater, the Legacy Board, Children’s Hospital and Medical Center, Child Saving Institute, Girls Inc., TeamMates, American Cancer Society LIFE MOTTO: Leap and the net will appear. Kate Schafer’s volunteer work spans multiple Omaha organizations. When she sees a need to be met, she volunteers. “Whether it’s an auction, a race, a meal, a leadership position or a supportive role, I am happy to be a part of something if I feel like I can help make a meaningful impact,” she said. Schafer was a stay-at-home mom when she discovered a flair for decorating homes and storefronts for the holidays. In 2003, she launched Fleurish, a small business that offers floral services including event styling, seasonal displays and container gardening. Why do you choose to make the time to volunteer? I feel that it’s important to give back to the community where I live and the community my children are growing up in. It’s incredibly rewarding to know I have contributed to making Omaha a better place to live, and that I have helped others when they needed it. When you volunteer, you usually get back more than you give. You make new friends, you learn new skills, and you have the opportunity to be part of something larger than yourself. How do you get the kids involved in volunteering? When appropriate, I let my kids help. Sometimes that means they get to help me pick out items to donate. Other times that means physically helping me work at an event, such as at the Rose

Theater’s boutique or packet pickup for Race for the Cure. I hope that by involving them when I can and talking to them about volunteerism, they will value it. Hopefully one day they will be active in their community, too. What are the most important lessons you want your kids to learn? There are two things I want my kids to learn more than anything else: work hard and be nice. I feel if they can learn to do those two things, they can be anything they want. What does a good day look like in your family? A good day for my family starts when everyone leaves the house on time and is happy doing so. Just before we leave, my kids tell me they love me, instead of “I forgot to do my homework,” or “By the way, I need you to make me a lunch.” It’s a day full of funny texts from my husband, coffee with a good friend, and a concise but productive volunteer meeting. It’s a night with dinner at the kitchen table with my family, instead of driving through someplace between kids’ sports practices, and watching my boys ride bikes or play outside until bedtime while my daughter tells me about middle school drama. It’s closing out the evening by watching Netflix with my husband while I work on my laptop, and he works on his. What do you hope your kids will have great memories of? I hope my kids have great memories of the time we spend together as a family laughing. No family is perfect, especially mine, but we know how to have fun together. I hope that my kids will look back fondly at my dancing in the car at stoplights just to embarrass them or the summer mandate that we must eat ice cream every day. I hope they forget just how much they fight with each other and how often I make them clean their rooms!

Leslie Mayo, 46 MOTHER OF: Lauren, 12; Ryan, 10 PROFESSION: Director of Business Operations, Freestone Wealth Strategies VOLUNTEERS WITH: Children’s Hospital and Medical Center Carolyn Scott Rainbow House, Junior League of Omaha, Rose Theater Guild, Girls Inc., Child Saving Institute, Literacy Center of the Midlands, Fontenelle Forest, Completely Kids, Omaha Performing Arts Society, Omaha Symphony, Aquatic Club of Elkhorn QUOTE FOR LIFE: “Service to others is the rent you pay for your room here on Earth.” — Muhammad Ali Leslie Mayo’s volunteerism sprouted from a mother’s group. The group introduced her to the Carolyn Scott Rainbow House at Children’s Hospital and Medical Center, which provides accommodation for families and patients undergoing treatment at Children’s. Her fundraising efforts help the Rainbow House accommodate over 2,000 families each year at no charge. The service is “a priceless gift to families often facing heavy financial and emotional burdens,” she said. Mayo has been a member of the Junior League of Omaha for over 10 years. Through Junior League, Mayo became connected with other Omaha-area orga-

nizations that help to make a difference in the lives of children and families. Why do you choose to make the time to volunteer? Because each of us has the ability to make a difference in the life of another. Additionally, I really like the women that I volunteer with. Some of my best friends I met through either a nonprofit group or a volunteer event. What are the most important lessons you want your kids to learn? That each of us can make a difference in the life of another person. I hope my kids ultimately learn volunteering in the community is a great thing that can enrich one’s soul and provide a different perspective of the world. I love this quote about the importance of sharing volunteerism with children: “Nothing teaches hope, kindness, courage and compassion like helping others.” How do you get the kids involved in volunteering? My children love to help me volunteer when they can. My daughter has made fleece blankets for sick kids, stuffed backpacks for children who are unexpectedly removed from their homes as a result of a crisis situation, and helped prepare table decorations for benefit events. My son enjoys helping bake

treats for the families staying at the Rainbow House. What do you hope your kids will have great memories of? That the time they spent volunteering with mom was as much fun as it was rewarding, and that their mom worked to make Omaha and the surrounding area a community to be proud of. How do you balance your family’s needs, your professional and volunteer obligations and still make time for you? Some days are definitely better than others. My calendar is very important in order to balance everything. Also, a very supportive spouse is invaluable. I would not be able to give my time to volunteer without his help and understanding. I really enjoying volunteering, so this helps me find “my time” as it gives me a chance to hang out with my friends and do something to make a difference at the same time. Other than your children, what is the accomplishment you are most proud of? Knowing that I had a part in making a positive impact on the lives of others. I have been very fortunate to have been involved in several projects through the Junior League of Omaha that make a difference in the lives of children.

Male-centered clinics seek to lure reluctant patients: men

r

esearch shows that when it comes to doctors, most men are quick to dodge any encounter. Three Omaha-area clinics are hoping to change that tendency by focusing on treatments and services related to men’s health. Specialty clinics like NuMale, a Wisconsin-based company that recently opened an Omaha location near Westroads, are designed to offer men privacy and confidentiality. NuMale has no waiting room; as soon as a patient walks in the door, he is taken to a private exam room. The approach allows men to feel more comfortable talking about their health needs, said Justin Pulliam, vice president of NuMale.

Optima Medical Hormone Replacement, a clinic that offers hormone treatments for both men and women, and the Urology Health Center, which focuses on prostate problems among other men’s health issues, are two more clinics that offer services attuned to men’s health needs. The clinics aim to create a space for men to receive treatments, from the life-prolonging to the life-enhancing. ERECTILE DYSFUNCTION About 33 million men in America suffer from erectile dysfunction, or the inability to obtain and maintain an erection for a period of time long enough for intercourse. The problem tends to affect men over the age of 50, but doctors are starting to see it in younger men as a result of obesity, high blood pressure and diabetes, according to NuMale chief medical officer, Christopher Asandra, M.D. “It’s a very personal and emotional issue, but it affects quite a few people in the U.S. alone,” Asandra said. “Men definitely shouldn’t feel like they are singled out or something is wrong with them.” NuMale takes a therapeutic approach to male sexual health and DANIEL MULLER

Every NuMale client receives a comprehensive, confidential examination and consultation to determine the most ideal, tailored treatment based on the individual’s specific situation, needs, and medical history. To treat erectile dysfunction, NuMale uses a specialized medication that differs from the usual pills because it therapeutically rehabilitates the penile tissue. The medication increases blood flow to the penis, exercises the organ and offers longer-term results, without the negative side effects of pills. With erectile dysfunction a thing of the past, men feel more confident and they are able to bring back the intimacy in their relationships. “We get guys that thank us for restoring their manhood,” Pulliam said. “We get a lot of people that tell us we saved their marriage.”

LOW TESTOSTERONE At around the age of 30, men start losing 1-2 percent of the hormone testosterone each year. That low testosterone can produce low libido, decreased energy, extra weight around the midsection, joint pain, decreased muscle mass and irritability. But many men may not realize that the cause of those symptoms is hormonal. Instead, men often blame their lack of energy on busy or stressful lifestyles, explained Joleen Lake, certified family nurse practitioner and owner of Optima Medical Hormone Replacement. Hormone replacement therapy allows men to regain that lost energy. Optima’s bio-identical hormone replacement therapy uses non-synthetic, plant-based hormones delivered by pellet implant. “The hormones are identical biologically to human hormones and bring testosterone up to an optimal level,” said Lake. NuMale also offers bio-identical hormone replacement therapy. Asandra said the treatment quickly shows effects. “We see change within the first couple weeks,” he said. After a month, “you feel better and your energy is better,” Lake said. “You even feel more motivation. You feel like working out, and you get more results.”

Lake suggests that men in their 40s or older should be tested for low testosterone. Testing involves a simple blood test. After starting on the treatment, Lake follows up with patients to ensure their testosterone levels are optimal. For men who are hesitant, Lake encourages them to consider some of the other benefits of replacement therapy, including prevention of cardiovascular problems, osteoporosis and Alzheimer’s. “People don’t have to feel miserable; low testosterone can be helped very easily and naturally,” she added. PROSTATE CANCER One out of six men will get prostate cancer in his lifetime, making prostate the most common type of cancer diagnosed in men living in the United States. Fortunately, most men who have the disease won’t die from it. According to the National Cancer Institute, the five-year relative survival for cancer that is still confined to the prostate is nearly 100 percent. The Urology Health Center in Fremont specializes in the management and treatment of prostate cancer. Treatment is aimed at achieving a cure while causing minimal side effects, said Ansar Khan, M.D., FACS.

Prostate cancer is the type of cancer that forms in the tissues of the prostate — a small gland in the male reproductive system. The earlier prostate cancer is detected, the more likely it can be cured. “Since prostate cancer is a slow growing cancer, and causes no symptoms until the disease is advanced, it is important to detect it in the early stage when the cancer is confined to the prostate,” Khan explained. The Urology Health Center offers targeted therapy of prostate cancer when it’s in the early stages. When the removal of the prostate is required, the clinic offers robot-assisted, minimally invasive surgery with a da Vinci prostatectomy. When the cancer is advanced, the clinic provides the latest treatment with the newest drugs, including immunotherapy. Not everyone may need treatment. “Many men with slow-growing cancers just need close surveillance,” Khan said. The risk of prostate cancer increases as men get older. A family history of prostate cancer, a diet high in red meat or high-fat dairy products, and obesity are other risk factors. In addition, African-American men are more likely to get prostate cancer. Khan recommends that men at higher risk for prostate cancer receive regular screenings beginning at age 40. Men with an average risk of prostate cancer should discuss screening risks and benefits with their doctors starting at age 50, the American Cancer Society recommends. Men can take steps to prevent cancer by improving their diet and lifestyle. Eating a high-fiber diet rich in high-quality carbs is helpful, Khan said. Decreasing meat and alcohol consumption, while increasing vegetables such as broccoli, cauliflower, Brussels sprouts, and kale can also have preventative effects. “Berries, tomatoes, green tea and spices such as turmeric are also believed to be protective,” added Khan. Men’s health problems are a significant focus of management and treatment at the Urology Health Center. In addition to prostate cancer, the health center addresses health problems including low testosterone, erectile dysfunction and prostate issues.

As he and his brother were left to fend for themselves, cooking became more than just making meals – it started to become a passion. Far from his mom’s homecooked meals in Fairbury, Jared began to experiment in the kitchen. Mixing ingredients and ideas with no formal culinary experience, he and his brother started hosting dinner parties sharing his home cooked meals with friends, offering a fun and fresh alternative to Amigo’s and Runza.

After spending nearly six years in Chicago, he had elevated his knowledge and familiarity with Chicago’s aggressive culinary style and fast-paced kitchen atmosphere. With a well-rounded stint in Chicago under his belt, Jared and his wife decided it was time to return to Omaha as their family began to grow. With stops at Flagship Restaurants, where he assisted in the development of the menu at Blue Sushi, and a successful launch at Blue Agave, it was time to branch out on his own. After checking out various locations, and considering a variety of concepts, he secured his current location at 1814 North 144th Street and launched Railcar Modern American Kitchen, a tribute to Omaha’s Union Pacific ties. It was his vision to bring to life original American cuisine as featured on early dining cars, with a new and modern flair. Upon entering Railcar, you are enveloped in a warm atmosphere with vintage railroad memorabilia, photography, and rustic railcar wood on the walls. The staff is well-trained to make the experience nothing short of exceptional, but it is examination of the menu that makes you understand the thought put into each dish, each fresh ingredient, and the perfect combination of items served with each meal. Whether it be the truly original appetizers, the amazing entrees with local, fresh ingredients, or their sandwiches with flair – you will not be disappointed. “I like to prove people wrong,” said Skylar, whose track skills recently earned her a place in the national games. “People with disabilities can do what people without disabilities can do. The sky’s the limit.” Special Olympics Nebraska (SONE) serves over 5,000 athletes across the state. Sports are at the heart of the organization: SONE offers year-round training and competition at all ability levels in 19 different sports, from swimming and basketball to bocce and roller skating. Athletes are assigned to competition divisions based on actual performance, preliminary heats, and age to help ensure true competition. The athletes compete for glory at state, national, and international competitions. Every summer, the three-day Special Olympics Nebraska Summer Games bring over 1,000 athletes together to compete for a spot on the national delegation. For many athletes, the games are a culmination of months of hard work. “It means the world to these athletes to get this opportunity to compete, have crowds cheer for them, and see the scale at which the community supports them,” said Kelli Bello, SONE development and media coordinator. Both athletes and family members benefit from the camaraderie and community SONE offers. Alisa Hoffman, a SONE staff member who is also the parent of an athlete, remembers her son’s first competition clearly. “The smile on Matt’s face at the competition was priceless,” she stated. “We knew immediately that we had found our place at Special Olympics, surrounded by families and new

The teenager had been struggling with anxiety and needed something to help her stay active, said her father, Steve Simmonds. Since starting with SONE, Skylar has earned numerous awards, competed at the national games and served as an ambassador. She has explored hobbies like crochet, lifted school spirit as the Millard South High School mascot, and started planning a future after high school. “Looking back on where we were with Skylar just four short years ago as she began her freshman year at Millard South, her transformation, growth, and accomplishments have been amazing to see,” Steve said. “This is not the Skylar we knew four years ago; this is a Skylar that has grown wildly and positively with the help of many positive experi-

OUR heart ences. It is not a coincidence that this change in Skylar parallels very closely to her participation in Special Olympics.” In addition to sports, SONE offers multiple initiatives to support its athletes and advocate for their needs. The Healthy Athletes program offers free health screenings for athletes at state competitions and referrals for follow-up care. The Athlete Leadership program allows athletes to grow their leadership and public speaking skills by working with mentors from Gallup. Participants then take on the role of SONE ambassadors and self-advocates at schools, clubs, or businesses. Nick got involved with SONE through its Young Athletes program for children ages 2 to 7. The program is designed to introduce young children to the world of sports, helping them improve physically, cognitively, and socially. The program also offers parents the opportunity to network with other families. For mother Heather Wright, the program serves as a place of support, where families can share resources, frustrations, and triumphs. “The best thing for Nick about being a Special Olympics athlete is that it is something that makes him just like every other kid,” Heather said. “It gives him a place to have fun and deepen friendships with his fellow athletes and special education classmates, but it also gives him common ground to discuss with his typical peers at school.” Rick Childree, director of sports and competition, has watched the organization grow in scope since he first started volunteering in the 1980s. SONE counts on a passionate network of over 8,000 volunteers to support its competitions and other programs. As more families have become aware of the program, the number of athletes has grown, too. Outreach to individuals with autism has also increased SONE’s athlete population. As SONE’s reputation grows, Childree has worked to make the games as professional as possible. OUR heart athletes with physical limitations, but otherwise, the rules are generally the same as one would find in other competitions. “I would put our athletes up against any athlete in the state of the Nebraska,” mentioned Childree. One difference between Special Olympics events and other competitions is the attitude toward sportsmanship. High fives and hugs for opposing teams are a common sight at a Special Olympics event, Bello said. At a recent track meet, Bello saw a track athlete trip and fall, only to be helped up by another competitor who stopped and turned around in the middle of the race. The athletes walked across the finish line together. “Our athletes are out to do their best and win a medal,” Childree said. “But if they don’t win a medal, they will also be the first to turn around and congratulate whoever did win the race.” Bello and her SONE colleagues are working to reduce barriers between intellectually disabled students and typically abled students, especially in schools. Project Unify seeks to create unified learning environments that bring together students of varying abilities in schools across Nebraska. Bringing students together benefits both parties by breaking down stereotypes and fostering friendships among people who are different, according to Bello. “It teaches you not to pre-judge people — or underestimate people just because they are different,” she said. Myrle Giersch, Melissa’s father, has watched his daughter grow and mature through participation with the Special Olympics. The experience has opened his eyes to how capable athletes can be, and how much they can give back. “They’ve got a wealth of things they can give to society, the world, and to us,” he said. Through sports and the Athlete Leadership program, Melissa said she has had the opportunity to reach for and achieve her goals. She still gets nervous before a competition, but it’s an excited nervous. “After all”, she added, “it’s all about fun.”

Interior designers and their clients benefit from the ASID professional network

b

rad and Cindy Lewis had never worked with an interior designer before. When they started building a lake house outside of Waterloo — while living in another town — they quickly realized how useful a professional designer could be. “They made the entire process seamless and relatively stress-free,” said Cindy, describing interior designers Lisa Cooper, Allied Member ASID, and Nancy Pesavento, ASID. The two designers made frequent visits to the in-progress house, addressed key details with the contractor, and ensured the couple achieved their vision: a peaceful home poised for lake living. According to Brad, “Hiring them was the most cost-effective money we spent.”

Cooper and Pesavento are members of the American Society of Interior Designers, the oldest and largest professional organization for interior designers in the United States. For designers, ASID membership offers continuing education opportunities and a national network for idea sharing. For consumers, hiring an ASID member offers assurance that a designer has the education, experience, and resources to make their vision a reality. “It puts your client’s mind at ease that you have the education, you’re committed, and you have invested in a lifelong journey as a professional designer,” Cooper said. ASID professionals must pass rigorous standards for acceptance. To be a member, designers must meet educational and work experience standards. Professional members must pass a two-day national accreditation examination.

SERENITY ON THE LAKE If designers Lisa Cooper and Nancy Pesavento could choose one word to describe the home of Brad and Cindy Lewis, it would be peaceful. Located in the West Shores community at Highway 275 and West Dodge Road, the Lewis home was designed to invoke the serenity of the lake, while also handling the wear and tear of lake living. Cooper and Pesavento first worked with the couple to identify their style and needs. From there, they pulled together ideas to capture that style perfectly in the home, Cindy Lewis said. The resulting feel of the home is 66 |

natural and peaceful while incorporating strong architectural elements. Cooper and Pesavento selected a restrained color palate of grays and natural tones with pops of red. To give the home an architectural punch, they worked with an architectural designer to design and create a floating, see-through fireplace that greets visitors upon entry into the home. The linear fireplace incorporates asymmetrical elements that make it a statement feature. “It catches the attention, but you can also see behind it to the lake view,” Cooper said. The main floor powder room is another favorite of Cindy’s. The standout space features three-dimensional tiles covering the wall. Together with the curved cabinet, full mirror, and pendant lighting, the room is “a piece of art,” stated Cindy. Brad and Cindy frequently spend time on their covered deck, lounging in the outdoor furniture the designers selected. Cindy also loves the cozy kitchen bench designed to take in the lake views. Cindy said Cooper and Pesavento brought intuitiveness and an eye for detail that eased the home-building process, especially since the couple was building the home from afar. “I felt like I didn’t have to worry about a thing, because I

knew they were overlooking it all and everything would be done better than I could ever imagine,” Cindy said. AN ‘EYE’ FOR DESIGN When Eye Specialists in Bellevue was ready to open a second location, business administrator Jane Bares knew exactly what she was looking for — something modern and edgy that read more boutique than eye clinic. Bares worked with interior designer Doris Buell, ASID, to create a hip, flexible space for the new Eye Specialists/Fixations location in Papillion. “It looks like a New York boutique,” Buell said. “It feels very cosmopolitan.” The project challenged Buell to design a space with exam rooms and eye equipment while maintaining a boutique feel. The exposed ceiling is peppered with layered, dramatic ceiling effects to improve acoustics as well as catch the eye. Floating ceiling layers over the reception desk and exam room corridor help identify space function. In the front reception and retail area, Buell utilized mobile furnishings with casters to allow the owners to continually reengineer the space and displays. To make merchandise sparkle, Buell selected

custom cube displays with LED lights and adjustable track lighting. The durable, vinyl flooring is in a whitewashed gray tone, lending an upscale look while making cleaning a breeze. Bares liked the idea of creating a visual feast in a place that specializes in eyes. “When customers walk in, their first word is often ‘wow’,” Bares said. Buell credits ASID with keeping her abreast of industry changes, evolving trends, and product developments. Her expertise allowed her to focus Bares’ ideas and make them come to life. “Interior designers are fabulous because they have that ability to create,” mentioned Bares. A LIFELONG COLLABORATION When an interior designer and client make a connection, the relationship can sometimes blossom into friendship. Homeowner Jan Vrana and designer Richard White, ASID, have worked together more than 20 years. Their collaboration started with a redecorating project in her daughter’s bedroom. White later lent his expertise when Jan and husband Chip built their current home near Regency. The two continue to join forces as Vrana re-envisions different spaces in her home. Over the years, White has come to understand Vrana’s style. And Vrana has learned to trust White’s expertise. “He has impeccable taste, and he’s also willing to listen to my ideas,” she said. Vrana draws much of her design inspi-

ration from textiles. One of her favorite elements in her home is the luxurious drapery in the living and dining rooms. The drapes and bullion fringe cascade down custom-designed poles, creating a puddle of fabric on the floor. “It’s beautiful, simple, and lilts off the window,” added White. When she is not falling in love with a new textile, Vrana is finding antiques to bring home. White helps her pull everything together. “A lot of times it is taking what she lost her heart to, pushing the envelope a bit, and showing her ideas that she might not have thought about,” he said. The two have worked together so long they have become good friends. Part

of the reason interior design can foster friendship goes back to the personal nature of the process, according to White. “What we do is so intimate,” he said. “You can’t be in someone’s dresser or closet or shower without getting intimate.” Vrana is no stranger to design. Her blog, the French Tangerine, is an ode to home décor and design inspiration. Still, she relies on White to “bring the taste,” as he puts it. Vrana and White’s friendly collaboration shows no sign of stopping. The two worked on the dining room this year; soon enough, a new project will come along. With White’s help, “I think I’ll be decorating this house for the rest of my life,” Vrana said.

ith energy savings on many people’s minds, the

popularity of home window film has surged. Window Tinting Company of Omaha has become the area’s leader in residential and commercial application as new advances in the window film industry are providing benefits to homeowners simply by retrofitting a thin laminate to existing glass.

PROTECTION S

Let’s face it, despite everything we’ve heard about glass houses, we’re building them! Safety and security films are optically clear and subtly tinted polyesters that are designed to provide a powerful barrier which assist in holding glass in place should an impact occur. No matter what the breakage is from: natural disasters, crime, vandalism, or everyday accidents, you can rest assured that security film will help control and even eliminate the danger and damage caused by broken glass. Safety film is usually installed as an afterthought subject to loss. Be proactive instead of being reactive and install safety film on all glazing that could be or is an issue in your home.

COMFORT The Department of Energy says that installing window film is the most cost effective measure to lowering your utility bill and increasing comfort in your home. Sun glare, infrared heat, and even loss of insulation can be significantly reduced and in some cases eliminated when retrofitting window film on residential glazing. We’ve all been there, too much glare on the flat screen while you’re watching your favorite sporting event or not being able to eat dinner at the kitchen table because of the intense sun beaming through untreated windows. Installing glare reducing films or virtually transparent solar films on your home will greatly reduce these issues while creating a more comfortable living space.

Magnificent wood floors become sun-faded. Bright colored fabrics installed on newly upholstered furniture washed out due to direct sunlight are significant fears of every new homeowner. So we settle for living in drape covered caves instead of comfortably drawing the shades. Installing UV reducing films on your existing windows will considerably reduce the fading of fabrics and wood floors from losing their luster. While ordinary glass offers little to no protection from the sun, UV window films do, and at a fraction of the cost of other UVblocking alternatives. So open up your blinds and shutters and rest assured that you can safely let the outside in!

S

NEXT STEPS DO YOUR RESEARCH. Surprisingly, there are many manufacturers of window film and even more dealers. Make certain to choose a product based upon your specific needs. No single window film works for everyone. We all have different levels of expectation and different perceptions of how the film should look and perform. Today’s innovations in window film have allowed manufacturers to offer lifetime warranties when films are installed by factory authorized dealers. GET AN ESTIMATE OR MULTIPLE. Apples to apples, make sure to choose a company you trust, someone who has a significant and meaningful track record and most importantly a company who treats you fairly. Feeling great about the installation and performance of the film after you’ve paid is an even better feeling than knowing you got a great price. SIT BACK AND RELAX. Since window films are passive materials, you won’t have to replace batteries or flip light switches to get them to perform. Enjoy the peace of mind that you get from knowing everything within your home is cared for because you took measures to provide protection, create comfort, and ensure beauty within your living spaces. 70 |

One Tree Yoga’s passionate teachers bring out yoga’s many flavors

anging from a wall rope, yoga students at One Tree Yoga exhale and deeply stretch. Yoga Karunta, as this new class is called, literally means “puppet yoga.” The wall ropes simulate the sense of being a suspended puppet, allowing students to refine their alignment, enjoy a more intense stretch, and tap into deeper benefits for the mind and body. “I love expanding what I call the ‘realm of possibility,’” said CeCe Carson, who teaches the class. “When a student sees that they can achieve something they once thought impossible, the universe expands.”

Yoga Karunta is one of many flavors of yoga offered at One Tree Yoga’s two Omaha locations. Just as a student’s journey with yoga changes over time, so has One Tree Yoga evolved to meet the needs of the Omaha yoga community. When the studio opened more than 15 years ago, it offered just one form of yoga. Today, the studio thrives with classes in over a dozen different styles of yoga, taught by more than 20 passionate teachers. While each class may have a different focus, instructors share a common view of yoga as a lifetime path and practice — not a fad, not just a physical exercise, but a way of living. “One Tree sees yoga in its full totality — a practice and way of life for the body, mind, and soul,” said Alison King Tigges, general manager. Students and instructors tout yoga’s mental and physical benefits. Tim Streff began practicing yoga at One Tree about eight years ago; today, he attends class three to four times a week. “The most obvious benefits are core strength,

flexibility, balance and overall strength,” Streff said. “However, the benefits go far beyond that in terms of a feeling of peace and overall well-being.” Student Lindsay Beck improved her flexibility and strength. But over time, she experienced deeper benefits. “The greatest benefit of a regular yoga practice, for me, has been developing acceptance — of people who get under my skin, of circumstances that are out of my control, and most importantly, acceptance of myself and all of my perceived flaws,” she said. One Tree Yoga Owner Jamie Rye began practicing at the studio over a decade ago. Through the years, the studio became like a second home. She first became a teacher, and in 2010 she left her job at a Fortune 500 company to lead the studio she had grown to love. Many of One Tree Yoga’s instructors share similar stories of starting as students and progressing to become teachers. perience, and interests to the table. With staff members ranging from their 20s to 60s, clients of all ages feel comfortable in One Tree Yoga’s doorways. “You’ll never walk in the door and think, ‘I don’t fit in here,’” Rye said. As One Tree Yoga has added instructors, its classes have also diversified to include styles like mom and baby yoga, candlelight yoga, senior’s yoga, and many others. Class offerings grow organically depending on an instructor’s passion, Rye said. “We are unique because we literally have something for everyone,” Tigges said. “We offer yoga for kids, seniors, athletes, non-athletes, addicts, and everyone in between. Our teachers are diverse and our student body is diverse.” Even as classes change, Rye said One Tree Yoga continues to focus on creating a place for people to experience a sustainable, long-term yoga practice. One of the many trickle-down effects of yoga, Rye says, is increased awareness — both on the mat and in other areas of life. That awareness can prove transformative in a yogi’s life. “Achieving a fancy pose is nice and exciting, but when I see a student more committed to her practice or more patient in his daily life, more willing to tolerate discomfort or inconvenience or more accepting of change, that makes my heart sing,” instructor Carson said.
