EDGE

is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month. All of us know women who have battled the disease. Many of us have been profoundly impacted by it. This month’s issue of Edge is devoted to sharing the stories of advocates, victims, and survivors. Three breast cancer survivors shared with us their experiences of living with cancer. We also talked with local business owners who pay tribute to women grappling with the disease through small but meaningful gestures, offering free home cleaning services. This issue, we also take a look at the curious story of how an endangered breed of goats arrived in Nebraska. The journey of the San Clemente Island goats to a Gretna farm shows how individual actions can make a big difference — and maybe even save a dying breed. In our health section, we examine sleep apnea — who it affects and what you can

do about it to live your healthiest life. In between reading this issue and waiting for the next to arrive, keep up with us on Facebook. We hope to inspire you and be inspired by you! Best wishes, Jack Shotbolt Editor in Chief

esigning a home around the needs of the modern family proved to be an exciting challenge for Matt Kronaizl, owner of Sierra Homes, and Tamarah Phillips with Berkshire Hathaway Home Services. They wanted to have all of the entertainment areas on one floor and give the house a modern, but cozy, feel. The result is the two-story, 2,800 square foot home they recently finished, located in Coventry Estates in Elkhorn. 8|

EDGE

The main floor is an open concept and includes a large kitchen, sunken living room with a pool table, TV/family room area, and a wine lounge that has all of the bar essentials but serves as a sitting area rather than a traditional bar. “There are lots of options on the main floor for ourselves or guests to spread out yet still interact with one another,” Tamarah said. “It’s not just everyone crowded around the kitchen island.” Modern elements are prevalent throughout the entire house. Large columns in the main living room feature architectural cut-outs that showcase glass art. The guest bathroom and sunken living room use colored LED backlighting as accents, and a linear fireplace warms the pool table area. A sun tunnel skylight funnels natural light into the second-story bathroom. Cables line the staircase, appliances are housed in aluminum garages, and a small elevated corner of the kitchen counter serves as a tablet station. “We purchased a lot of items online; you won’t find them in other homes,” Tamarah explained. Keeping each house he constructs truly custom is important to Matt. Sierra Homes builds 12-15 homes per year with a majority of its clients coming from referrals. “My personality is laid back but extremely organized, and I think people like that,” Matt said. “It’s important to me that we have a harmonious working relationship and get along once the project is finished and make sure the client is happy.” He said most of his clients are empty nesters looking for traditional homes, but once they see

what he can do by introducing a modern flare, many of them become sold on that style. “A lot of people don’t realize you can have a modern style home that’s still warm and comfortable,” Matt said. Using mixed materials is a great way to achieve that, such as putting stone around the bathroom vanities and colored glass tile as accents on backsplashes. Other modern amenities in the home include a coffee bar in the master bedroom and a glass sliding barn door that leads into the master bath. The main floor features higher ceilings and there is a white board in the kitchen to leave messages for family members. The idea for the wall rack in the wine lounge came from another home Matt built, but he and Tamarah modified it and put it together themselves. “We had so many ideas, but like any homeowner, there were a lot that didn’t fit the style of the home or fit our budget,” Tamarah said. They keep all of their ideas in mind for future clients and are excited to share them. In fact, they use their home as a model and offer showings by appointment. And for Matt, who started building homes as a hobby, what was once a far off dream has become a reality.

arah Guido, Tammy Tanner, and Teresa Sims are all Omaha women who were diagnosed with invasive forms of breast cancer before the age of 45. All of them were scared. All of them underwent bilateral mastectomies and months of multiple reconstructive surgeries. All of them leaned heavily on family and friends for unparalleled support. But most importantly, all of them are survivors. Each of these women has a remarkable story, marked by a journey that so many hope they will never have to take. But it’s a journey that develops strength, courage, and the realization of just how loved one can feel. It also develops a desire to help others, both by giving back to organizations and through sharing their stories of survival.

OUR lives

“Everyone’s experience is different and everyone has to go through it on their own, but that doesn’t mean they have to do it alone.” – Tammy Tanner

For Tammy Tanner, breast, ovarian, and pancreatic cancer ran in her family. So much so that she and her four sisters decided to receive genetic testing for the BRCA 1 and 2 gene mutations. She and one sister tested positive for the BRCA 1 mutation, which meant their risk for developing breast cancer by the age of 70 was 87%, compared to only 10% for the general population. “We both decided to have prophylactic surgeries,” Tammy said. “However, I became pregnant with my second child, so I had to wait.” Unfortunately, four months into that pregnancy, Tammy found a lump that turned out to be invasive ductal carcinoma, which required chemotherapy during the remainder of her pregnancy. “I just had to trust that the baby would be okay,” she said. And thankfully, she did deliver a healthy baby girl, then had to continue treatment for another five months. “Just because you have cancer doesn’t mean it has to all be bad,” she shared. “I carried a baby through it and ended up with a gift from heaven.” Sarah Guido was living in Atlanta and in the process of moving to Omaha when she was diagnosed. She also tested positive for the BRCA 1 gene mutation after learning her form of cancer was very aggressive. “I was moving to a new city, my daughter was starting kindergarten, and I had all these surgeries ahead of me,” she said. Thankfully, she found immediate support from her new neighbors and friends in Omaha. “They brought me meals, gifts, and helped with shuttling my daughters to school and other activities. I will never forget their incredible kindness and support.” Teresa Sims didn’t have the BRCA 26 |

OUR lives gene mutation, but her father was one of only 10,000 men to be diagnosed each year with breast cancer and fought it twice. “My mother was my rock,” she said. “She went through it twice with my father and then went through it with me.” Teresa wants women to know that it’s okay to ask for help, and that there are so many resources available to them. One organization in particular is Project Pink’d in Omaha. They provide gas cards to women during treatment, babysitting, meals, connect patients with companies that provide wigs, and the organization provides blankets and other items to those who have been newly diagnosed. Project Pink’d also sells calendars as a fundraiser, and Teresa was able to participate in its photo shoot this year. “Everyone’s experience is different and everyone has to go through it on their own,” she stated. “But that doesn’t mean they have to do it alone.” All three women said that support, attitude, and keeping a sense of humor were key. Sarah’s sister organized “Sarah’s Strong Calendar” and scheduled friends and family to take turns visiting her

Bob, Shelby, Tammy, Grace and Emily Tanner during treatment. Teresa told cancer jokes as a way to help her kids cope. And even though Tammy couldn’t work during her initial treatment, she still went in to the office to see her coworkers who rallied around her. “Family and friends are the only way to get through it, and I had the best,” she said. But the primary message from these survivors is that early detection is everything. Regular, monthly self-exams are vital, and if you do find something, don’t wait to have it looked at. “Technology is so advanced now, that combined with diligence and early screening, there are many ways to prevent it,” Tammy said. And even though cancer is a part of these women’s lives, they don’t live in fear of it. “It doesn’t define me, and I’m stronger for having gone through it,” Sarah said. Teresa summed it up this way, “If you can fight cancer, you can fight anything.”

hen Judy Aten was undergoing treatment for cancer earlier this year, she received a small gift that made a big difference – four monthly house cleanings provided free of charge by The Maids in Omaha. Her friend had told her about an organization that matches cancer patients with local cleaning companies called Cleaning for a Reason, and Judy said having the service was a life saver. “It took away so much stress while I was undergoing chemo,” she said. “The cleaning ladies were so nice, respectful, and worked their hearts out for me.”

OUR passion Founded in 2006 by Debbie Sardone, Cleaning for a Reason is a non-profit organization that has helped more than 15,000 women with cancer receive the gift of cleaning. The organization has 1,100 maid services throughout all 50 states and in Canada, which are paired with cancer patients in their areas. “Women tend to want to do things on

their own and don’t often ask for help,” Debbie said. “But this is a simple way to give them some relief during a time when they really need it.” When a woman is diagnosed with any type of cancer, she simply needs to provide a doctor’s note and her contact information to Cleaning for a Reason.

The organization then pairs her with a cleaning company in her area that will schedule four monthly cleanings. With millions of women needing help, the organization encourages as many cleaning services to join as possible. “We would like every professional cleaning service to join the cause,” said Debbie. “We’d like to become a household name.” The Maids in Omaha joined the cause in 2010, and its two local offices continue to provide free services to cancer patients as often as possible. “We get the chance to help someone who really needs it,” said Ryan Bishop, owner of The Maids. And having had cancer in his own family, he knows how difficult it is to do things such as clean the house when undergoing treatment. “We’re not changing lives, but it helps lighten their day, so it’s more than a win-win.” Pink Shoe Cleaning Crew in Omaha recently joined the cause, which owner Allison Helligso said has been something she’s wanted to do for years. “Helping women with cancer through cleaning has always been a goal of

mine,” she explained. “But I didn’t want to join until I knew I could do it right.” The organization does do background checks on each cleaning service and makes sure the companies are bonded and insured. To attract more maid services to the organization, Debbie said Cleaning for a Reason has partnered with several major companies to get the word out. Pink Swiffer products are being marketed on Cleaning for a Reason branded pallets in all major Wal-Mart stores as a way to promote awareness. Ryan with The Maids said he wishes more cleaning companies in Omaha would join. “There’s plenty of need for it, and we’re always open to doing more.” Allison with Pink Shoe Cleaning Crew agrees. “We’re asked to clean for two patients a month, but if they send me more, I’m not going to turn them away,” she said. “By giving back in this small way, we are able to help women with cancer focus on their treatment, healing, and relaxing, and that’s what is most important.”

In Gretna, John F. Carroll strives to save the rare San Clemente Island goat

o

n an acreage in Gretna, John F. Carroll shepherds perhaps the largest herd of San Clemente Island goats left in the world. The herd is nearly 150 strong. But if Carroll has his way, his work will pave the way for the endangered breed’s resurgence. “Whatever my legacy in life is going to be, saving these goats will be a part of it,” said Carroll, 49. For several years, Carroll and his longtime partner, 41-year-old Chad Wegener, have worked to acquire and breed San Clemente Island goats here in Nebraska. Gentle and deer-like, the creatures are unique in both features and history. For over 100 years, the feral goats lived plentifully on the 57-square-mile San Clemente Island off San Diego, their numbers swelling to 15,000 in the 1970s. Some contend the goats were originally brought to Catalina Island, one of the eight Channel Islands, by way of Spanish explorers in the 16th century, although no one knows for certain. In 1875, history indicates that Salvador Ramirez brought goats and foxes from Catalina Island to San Clemente Island where both spread across the island.

COVER story Regardless of their beginnings, their end on San Clemente Island is clear. Biologists determined the goats threatened the island habitats of certain plants, birds, and lizards on the federal endangered species list. The owner of the island, the U.S. Navy, began an extermination program that included shooting the animals. Most were slaughtered in the 1980s, save those that the Fund for Animals rescued and adopted out to individuals. Their numbers shrunk from 4,000 to a low of 250. The Livestock Conservancy, an organization that works to protect heritage breeds of livestock, today lists the goats as critically endangered. Carroll first interacted with the rare goats in the 1990s in California, where a neighbor owned a rescued pair. The brown and tan goats touched on a childhood fascination with animals. While other kids were trading baseball cards, Carroll grew up collecting animal cards. At 13, he secretly converted his closet into a chicken coop and mail-ordered chicks. (His mom was not pleased.) “I was always that kid bringing home the baby bird and fixing broken wings,” Carroll mentioned. “It’s continued into adulthood.” That love of animals stuck with him throughout varied life experiences. Over the years, Carroll has been a medic in the U.S. Air Force, a caregiver to those affected by HIV and AIDS, a registered nurse, and a “Survivor” season four contestant. He graduated from Creighton Law School in 2005 and founded the medical malpractice firm Watson & Carroll in 2011 with his law partner, Steven M. Watson. When he and Wegener bought their Gretna acreage nine years ago, they envisioned it as a place to tinker with projects. Wegener soon realized Carroll’s vision included animals when a delivery arrived. “I looked out to the driveway and saw a small truck, a trailer, and a goat’s head hanging out,” recounted Wegener. Unbeknownst to Wegener, Carroll had rediscovered the goat breed he knew in

Carroll while a contestant on “Survivor” season four. California and was moved to acquire a pair. Luckily, the gentle goats grew on Wegener. “How can it not touch your heart when you learn about an animal of any species being endangered?” he said. Over time, Carroll acquired additional goats through breeders nationwide; soon kids were born. Dubbed Willow Valley Farms, the property became home to not just goats but also chickens, turkeys, Muscovy ducks, and guinea fowl. As the animals increased, so did the associated projects. Wegener, who grew up around farms in South Dakota but previously worked in business, now works on the farm’s development full-time. Carroll and Wegener have big plans for Willow Valley Farms and the goats. A top priority is trying to turn the goats into a dairy breed. The goats produce milk with a high butter fat content yielding a sweet, mild cheese — one that Carroll believes has a market. If successful, their model of using San Clemente Island goats to craft artisan cheese will be replicated by others, helping increase the goats’ numbers in Nebraska and beyond. “At the end of the day, we really want to have a working goat farm where we’re milking in the morning and evening and producing some of the best goat cheeses from an endangered breed,” Wegener explained. Carroll and Wegener also dream of using the farm to teach

others. They imagine a cheese tasting room and a place for guests to drink wine with a locally grown meal. They are rehabbing vintage RVs on the property to offer “farmcations” — an opportunity for people to escape from city life and relax on the farm. Being close to nature and animals, Wegener believes, brings out a sense of wonderment in both children and adults. At the center of these experiences will be goats like Booker, the hand-fed goat who follows Wegener around like a puppy, or Rosemary and Big Red, the farms’ original goat residents. If all goes well, the herd of 150 is just the beginning for the San Clemente Island goats. “Hopefully by the time I retire, there will be 5,000 goats around the country, and they will be in a place where they will survive,” Carroll said. Le Petit Paris is a boulangerie and patisserie in West Omaha owned by Cedric and Desarae Fichepain who also own French restaurant Le Voltaire next door. Cedric said he had always wanted to start a bakery, and when the space next to the restaurant became available, he opened one and is celebrating its one year anniversary this month. “We didn’t want it to be a mainstream sweet shop,” he said. “So we didn’t want to Americanize things too much, but rather stay true to the French culture.”

To achieve that goal, Cedric hired Yann Kogut who was named “Best Young Baker of France 2009.” Yann focuses on French white breads in a variety of forms, including oregano and cheese, sun-dried tomato and olive, as well as walnut and cranberry. He bakes just as many different types of croissants, or “viennoiserie,” including chocolate, almond, apricot, cinnamon, and raisin. To Cedric’s surprise, croissants are even more popular in the U.S. than they are in France. However, he said not as many Americans will stop by a bakery on their way home from work to pick up fresh bread for the evening meal like they do in France. Customers who do are often people who have traveled to France and want to experience those cultural culinary treats locally. But breads aren’t the only French delicacies Le Petit has to offer. Its pastries are just as appealing, and according to Cedric, even more of an art form than baking bread. “Pastries

find,” Kyle said. Almost all ingredients are from France, except for the butter, which can be more difficult to work with since it has a lower fat content and more water than French butter. “But we make it taste very good,” he added. Every few months Kyle enjoys creating a new cake or candy, but there are a number of seasonal items he includes too. This month it will be a carrot cake with goat cheese, and for Christmas he will make a “bouche de noel”, which is a traditional French log cake. “We like to always offer our best sellers and most popular items, but we like switching things out to keep it fresh too,” he said. The bakery has been such a success in its first year, Cedric said they are planning to open a second location in 2015. “Our customers from both the restaurant and the bakery have been so loyal, and there is plenty of demand in Omaha,” he said. “Finding a niche and staying true to ourselves is important not just to us, but to our customers as well.” 64 |

y the time people see Dr. Ann Edmunds about their sleep apnea, the sleep disorder has usually been bothering them for weeks, if not months. The person with sleep apnea and their partner are likely sleeping in different rooms, and the partner without sleep apnea has become seriously worried about the other person’s health. It is the partner’s concern that often brings the couple to Edmunds’ office at the Omaha Ear, Nose and Throat Clinic, near 168th and Pacific Streets. It is there that the partner tells Edmunds that what worries them most is the occasional stops in breathing. “Some people notice this and it makes them nervous,” Edmunds said.

Sleep apnea is a disorder that should make people nervous and be taken seriously. It frequently disrupts sleep and contributes to daytime sleepiness. More than 18 million Americans suffer from the sleep disorder, according to the National Sleep Foundation, a nonprofit research and advocacy group. “When sleep apnea is left untreated and undiagnosed, patients are more likely

to develop cardiovascular disease and a metabolic syndrome like diabetes,” said Dr. Robin Khan, a sleep apnea dentist at the Dentistry For Health near 105th and Pacific Streets. “Premature aging is a problem as well.” “Daytime sleepiness caused by sleep apnea can also increase a person’s risk of being in car accidents, lower their quality of life, and reduce their sex drive,”

Dr. Robin Khan explained Dr. Naresh Dewan, director of the sleep medicine program at Creighton University. “You might have sleep apnea if you have a history of snoring, frequently stop breathing while trying to sleep, or gasp for breath during the night,” Dewan stated. You also might have sleep apnea if you still feel tired despite getting seven to eight hours of sleep. “Your spouse or a bed partner may sometimes be the best judge to observe the snoring and breath-

ing pauses at night,” he said. “Sleep apnea patients also frequently toss and turn in bed,” said Dr. George Thommi of Midwest Pulmonary Critical Care, which has an office near 86th and Cass Streets. “The patients can fall asleep in bed right away but they often don’t achieve good rest,” he explained. “Certain physical traits also make people more likely to experience sleep apnea, including being overweight,” Khan said. Men with a neck circumfer-

ence larger than 17 inches also are more likely to have sleep apnea, as are women with a neck circumference greater than 15 inches. “If a patient has any of the above symptoms or has a history of cardiovascular disease, they should speak with their physician about being screened,” Khan stated. Children also can suffer from sleep apnea. Edmunds explained that children who have sleep apnea will often act up in school and get misdiagnosed with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder. But the children often act up because they’re trying to stay awake. Once mom or dad picks them up after school, the tired children immediately fall asleep in the car. The good news for adults and children, sleep apnea can easily be tested and treated. “Children usually suffer from sleep apnea because of large tonsils and/or adenoids, the lymphatic tissue right behind the nose,” Edmunds said. Once the tonsils and/or adenoids are removed by surgery, most children no longer have sleep apnea. That was the case for 11-year-old Olivia Weiss, a sixth grader at Elkhorn Ridge Middle School. Earlier this year, Olivia was snoring through the night and often tossing and turning, according to her mother, Julianne Weiss. Edmunds, who knew Olivia had large tonsils from previously treating her for strep throat, suggested the family get

SURPRISING, how a gift so affordable makes you feel like a million dollars.

Dr. George Thommi and staff Olivia tested for sleep apnea, which they did. In June, Olivia’s tonsils were removed. These days, Olivia sleeps quietly through most of the night. “Her bed doesn’t look like a tornado when she wakes up in the morning,” her mother said. “She’s getting a more restful sleep.” For adults, the diagnostic and screening process is simple. “Patients can pick up a monitoring device, about the size of an iPhone, and wear it to bed at night for an initial screening option,” Khan said. “Screening is easy.” The patient’s bed partner coming with the prospective patient to the initial visit can be “extremely valuable and important,” Dewan said. He can diagnose sleep apnea with help from an in-lab sleep study or an at-home sleep study. People typically have one of the two main types of sleep apnea; obstructive sleep apnea, which occurs when throat muscles relax and block a person’s airway, or central sleep apnea, which happens when the brain doesn’t send proper signals to the muscles that control breathing, according to the Mayo Clinic. “Breathing pauses for 10 seconds or longer can be read as an apnea,” Dewan said. “If a patient undergoes an in-home sleep study and the results come back negative, it’s important the person does not stop there,” he continued. “Most patients with a negative home sleep study require further evaluation with an in-lab sleep study.” Treatments can vary for people who have sleep apnea. A mandibular

advancement device, which is worn in the mouth, often works well for people with mild to moderate apnea, according to Khan. For people with severe sleep apnea, continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) often helps. CPAP, like other treatment tools, including the mandibular advancement device, helps open a person’s airway, Khan mentioned. “I like to tell patient that I am going to create a larger garage to park their car. The tongue being the car and the mouth is the garage,” she said. “Surgical options exist as well,” she added. The Omaha doctors also recommend behavioral changes for some patients. “Quitting smoking might reduce the severity of a person’s sleep apnea,” Dewan said. He also encourages all sleep apnea patients who are obese to lose weight. “Weight loss of even 10 to 20 pounds can reduce the severity of sleep apnea by 20 to 30 percent or more. Significant weight loss, 50 pounds or more, can eliminate sleep apnea and the need for CPAP,” he explained. Khan said losing 10 to 20 pounds is the “best form of treatment.” Avoiding sleeping on your back also can help reduce sleep apnea. Dewan also offered these suggestions, which could lead to better health for everyone, including people without sleep apnea: Control your food portion sizes for calories, exercise regularly – 45 minutes a day, five times a week, and get sufficient sleep – seven to eight hours a night.

FROM TRAGEDY TO

TRIUMPH

Ashton Legenza | Age 17 | Mount Michael Benedictine By most accounts, Ashton discovered his love of soccer and football rather late in his childhood years. Joining the Elkhorn Soccer Club in 5th grade, Ashton began his soccer career. He quickly started to improve and worked his way up through several club teams until he earned a position on a team in his 8th grade year that competed in the most competitive club soccer league in the Midwest - the Midwest Regional League. Ashton and his family regularly traveled throughout the Midwest to Kansas City, Cedar Rapids, and Madison, Wisconsin. As a freshman at Mount Michael, he made the varsity team and split playing time with a senior at forward. Freshman at Mount Michael Benedictine are required to play a fall and spring sport. With his spring sport already determined, Ashton decided to tryout for football as his fall sport. At tryouts, the varsity head coach quickly noticed Ashton’s speed and placed him on the varsity roster. Midway through the third quarter of the first football game of the season, Ashton was called into the game due to a player injury; his coach informed him he would be getting the ball. On that first drive, he caught the pass for an eight yard gain. As the season continued, he became a starting wide receiver and even got his first touchdown. His sophomore year, he once again earned the starting wide receiver spot and was a kick returner for special teams. He finished that season with a couple more touchdowns and an all-district award for special teams. One summer day before the start his junior year, Ashton’s life took a drastic turn. As a passenger in a vehicle that had lost control on a gravel country road, Ashton’s left side of his face was shattered when the car made impact with a tree; he lost nine of his front teeth, and suffered from brain bleeding and a major concussion. Ashton made a full recovery despite the missing teeth but was not allowed to play football his junior year due to the head trauma. His future soccer seasons were also in jeopardy. Unable to stay away from football, Ashton volunteered to film the games for the team in lieu of suiting up. Ashton’s opportunity for a comeback came in the spring of his junior year when he was cleared by doctors to play soccer. He helped lead the Knights to their first district championship in school history. Finishing the season with 15 goals and three assists, Ashton won the “offensive player of the year” trophy from his team and received an all-state honorable mention. The summer before his senior year, Ashton endured multiple surgeries to begin putting his mouth back together and his return to football was still questionable. Ultimately, doctors approved his return to the football field and Ashton felt the need to put two years worth of play into one season. He worked very hard through the summer to best prepare for the upcoming season. His hard work payed off, the Knights are currently 3-0 (at time of publication) for the first time since 1996. Ashton already has a game saving 98 yard pick-6 interception, an 80 yard reception for touchdown, and a 97 years kick return for touchdown. Off the field, Ashton has accumulated a 3.6 GPA and has taken many AP and Honors courses. His name has been on the First Honors and Deans list at Mount Michael since he started attending. He is a member of the National Honor Society and has competed on the robots and chemistry teams. Volunteering is also important to Ashton with more than 100 hours of community service tallied thus far during his high school years in places all over Omaha and also in rural Mexico. Ashton has a younger sister, Avery (14), and is the son Michelle Legenza and Michael Cullen of Elkhorn, and Patrick Legenza. DANIEL MULLER

VICTORY IN

VOLLEYBALL Claire Knust | Age 17 | Skutt High School Originally a soccer player, Claire Knust was introduced to volleyball by a friend as a middle school student. Now as a senior in high school, Claire is weighing her college options and hopes to play Division I volleyball. Having a late introduction to competitive volleyball compared to other girls her age, Claire put in a lot of extra time and effort to improve and succeed. From participating in clinics, attending lessons, and practicing in her own driveway she was determined to hone her skills. That dedication paid off and as a freshman at Skutt High School, she was a starter on the junior varsity team and also played with the varsity team. That year she earned the Outstanding Red Shirt award. In both her sophomore and junior years, Claire was a starter on the varsity team and amassed a number of volleyball awards. During her sophomore season, she broke the school record for hitting above .900 and won multiple honorable mentions including from the Omaha World-Herald and Lincoln Journal Star. Her junior season included being named Nebraska Prep Volleyball Super 25, Omaha World-Herald All Area First Team and All State Tournament Team, River City Conference (RCC) All Conference, and Lincoln Journal Star All State Honorable Mention. As a senior this year, Claire is once again a starter on the varsity team at Skutt and is hoping to bring home even more awards to close out her high school career. Volleyball has become a year round sport for Claire and when she isn’t playing for her high school team she plays club for Nebraska Elite and club level sand volleyball in the summer. She has even trained with USA volleyball. Claire carries her drive to succeed into her scholastic and service work as well. With a 3.8 GPA, Claire has multiple academic awards: RCC Academic All-Conference the last two years, Silver Key in the state art competition, and the Service Award all three years of high school. Her volunteer time has been spent at the Ronald McDonald House, HETRA, Children’s Hospital, St. Stephens, and Big Sister, Little Sister. When not on the court, in the classroom, or volunteering, Claire enjoys spending time with her family and friends, playing sports with her brothers, biking, art, and playing the violin. She is the daughter of Tim and Jody Knust and has two younger brothers, Benjamin (14) and Charlie (11). A note of thanks from Claire that she wanted to include: “I want to thank my family, friends, community, Skutt Catholic, coaches, and teammates for helping me grow as an individual by showing me such incredible love and support to help me get to where I am today, on and off the court.” DANIEL MULLER
