The holiday

The holidays are also a great time to reach out and help those in need. In this issue we feature five area non-profit organizations that make a positive impact on our community. These organizations not only rely on monetary donations but also on acts of kindness and service. Whether it is purchasing a toy for a shelter animal, tying fleece to create a cozy blanket, or simply saving the pop tabs off of your canned beverages, I encourage you and your family to reach out and give in the community and spread some joy this month. The generosity of our community is yet another reason it is great to call west

Omaha home. This is also a wonderful time of year to get out and see Omaha all dressed up in celebration. Take some time and check out Christmas at Union Station at The Durham Museum, go skating at the ConAgra Foods Ice Rink and enjoy the Holiday Lights Festival, or just drive around and view the many light displays in the area. I wish everyone safe and happy holidays. Best wishes, Jack Shotbolt Editor in Chief

hen Chris and Tonya Olson decided to build a new home four years ago, they had only a handful of requirements. They wanted their daughter to have her own space that she and her friends could enjoy, Chris wanted a large garage, and Tonya wanted a kitchen where she could entertain. With the help of the Calabretto Building Group and Tom Clark, with Advanced House Plans of Omaha, they met all three requirements and then some. 8|

Their one and a half story, 4,332 square foot, Mediterranean-style home in The Estates at Coventry in Elkhorn includes an open floor plan with four bedrooms, four bathrooms, and a two-story great room. The Olson’s chose Calabretto Building Group after seeing a home they had designed and built in the Street of Dreams. “We liked everything about that home, and incorporated several elements into our design,” Tonya said. Some of these included the elevation of the house and the enclosed vestibule entry. Other than those few features, the Olson’s let their architect design the entire house. “Tom was wonderful to work with,” Tonya said. “He was very thorough, knowledgeable, creative, and experienced. He literally designed the home from scratch.” Four years later, the Olson’s still enjoy that design and the area where they live. “We love the neighborhood,” Tonya said. “It’s quiet, like we’re living in the country, and we love our neighbors.” In fact, one of her neighbors painted the oversized canvas prints that hang on either side of the two-story stone

helped with all the accessories, and I would absolutely use them again,” Tonya said. The second floor has three bedrooms, which the Olson’s use for an office, a large TV room for their daughter, and a bedroom with walk-in closet and its own bathroom. The halls have arched walkways, and a custom railing from S&W Fencing decorates the balcony that overlooks the great room. “There are a lot of unique, custom touches throughout the house,” Tonya said. Those custom features extend beyond the interior the home. The four-car garage includes drains in the floor for easy winter washing and built-in cabinetry. There is even a built-in shed behind the house for storage. The large patio features a fire pit, and the natural-based landscaping was done by Lanoha. The only thing Tonya said she’d change about the home are the colors. “After four years, trends in decorating change,” she said. “I’d like to use more greys and silvers throughout the house, especially in the kitchen countertops and backsplash tile. Styles change so quickly, new trends come out all the time, and it’d be nice to update some of those in our home.” And with a home you love, that’s easy to do.

Not just a workout but a lifestyle

veryone’s an athlete. That’s what CrossFit Elkhorn owner Trevor Baxter believes. After opening Omaha’s newest CrossFit location last March with business partner Justin Carraher, he wants to help athletes of all ages feel younger, stronger, and give them a sense of accomplishment. He’s doing so through his leveled classes that offer a variety of functional exercises in a high intensity program—the cornerstone of CrossFit. “Every CrossFit gym can be operated a little differently, depending on the coach,” Baxter said. “The gyms started out as warehouse or garage space, but now they’re becoming newer and more modern.” The Elkhorn location is a 2,500 square foot open floor plan that can accommodate up to 25 athletes at once, but Baxter said they try to keep their classes, which are offered several times a day, to about 15 members so the coaches can give them more attention.

What makes CrossFit different from other workout programs is its focus on strength conditioning and endurance. The daily exercises are functional movements that were originally designed for military or police work where explosive moves at a moment’s notice are necessary. “Being able to move large loads quickly over a long distance is what gives you the most benefit from a fitness perspective,” Baxter said. “But working with heavy weights can also cause injury if not done properly, so we spend lots of time on mechanics.” The 60-minute beginner classes include a 15-minute movement breakdown, where the coach teaches how to correctly perform the day’s exercises. Then members spend the next 20-25 minutes doing a number of reps of that movement. For example, if the daily exercise is front squats, you might do 10 sets. Each set has fewer reps with

heavier weights, but you also get more recovery time in between sets. “We constantly change the exercises,” Baxter said. “With CrossFit, the workouts get continuously harder, but people get continuously stronger and better.” There aren’t any cardio or weight machines in the gym, but rather all equipment that has to be manipulated, such as ropes, rings, kettle bells, and dumb bells. The coaches teach Olympic lifting such as power and hang cleans, as well as kettle bell swings, burpees, and pull-ups. A large white board covers one wall where individual results are

recorded for each class. “The afternoon classes can see how the morning classes performed, which promotes a healthy sense of competition and members seem to enjoy it,” Baxter said. That community-driven atmosphere is another important aspect of both Baxter’s and the CrossFit philosophy. “We try to keep it fun, and a place where members know each other,” he said. “This is not a gym where you put your headphones on and listen to your iPod. There is a lot of interaction. We want people to be a part of the lifestyle, not just the program.”

The CrossFit lifestyle includes frequent parties such as cookouts and an upcoming holiday party for members, as well as free classes for kids ages 3-13 on Saturday mornings. Kids can learn how to do squats and are exposed early on to a different type of fitness. Anyone interested in trying CrossFit is welcome to make an appointment to attend one of several daily introductory 60-minute classes that include a detailed explanation of the program and a sample workout. Memberships for CrossFit Elkhorn include four, eight, and 12-month contracts. “Our most popular is the four month membership with three workouts per week,” Baxter said. “It takes someone about four months to learn all the movements and become comfortable enough to where they can start to perform them more quickly and with heavier weights.” Just like any other exercise program, the key isn’t just in trying it. “You have to try it, and then keep doing it,” he said. “That will make you the most well-rounded athlete.” 28 |

Omaha organizations seek volunteers to make holidays a little brighter for others

t

he holiday season signals the hunt for the perfect gift to give that special someone, family member or friend. But for many Omaha organizations, the holidays are a time when needs increase. Harsh winter weather can spell trouble for families in need of warm jackets – or a hot meal. Other families need help ensuring Santa arrives on Christmas Eve. Families can embrace the season of giving by giving back to local charities. Giving back is not always about offering a financial donation. Instead, many organizations ask for the simple gift of time and a willingness to help. For other organizations, giving back is as easy as rounding up gently used items. We’ve rounded up five Omaha organizations that can help you and your family give back this season. Each offers unique ways to make a difference in our community, during the holidays and year-round.

OPEN DOOR MISSION opendoormission.org When the weather gets colder, needs often increase. Candace Gregory, president and CEO of the Open Door Mission, estimates the homeless shelter serves over 10 percent more meals through the winter months – an extra 300 meals on top of the 2,000 meals the organization typically serves daily. The increase in demand requires an increase in manpower. “With the holidays upon us, it means you need more volunteers,” Gregory said. Volunteers are needed to prep and serve food, sort and hang winter gear, and offer a friendly face to those in need. “So many of the people that we serve are hurting and broken when they come through our doors,” Gregory said. “To have someone that’s smiling when they come thru the doors says right away that they are loved and cared for. I think it makes a huge difference.” Open Door Mission is also collecting new toys for its Project Santa project. The program aims to distribute 6,000 toy bags before Christmas to children in need. Volunteers are needed to sort toys and bag them before they are distributed. On Saturday, Dec. 20, volunteers can help hand out toy bags, gift books and other items to low-income families. More than 14,000 volunteers annually engage with the Open Door Mission. Without their help, the organization would be unable to serve so many people in the community. “We are very grateful to the community for their generosity,”

COVER story Gregory said. “There is no way we can do what we do every day or during the holidays without the generosity of the community and the faithfulness of our supporters.” NEBRASKA HUMANE SOCIETY nehumanesociety.org Every year, about 10,000 animals are adopted through the Nebraska Humane Society, the fifth-oldest animal shelter in the U.S. Volunteers are a critical part of making sure animals find a loving home. “Volunteers are our lifeblood,” said Pam Wiese, vice president of public relations and marketing. Volunteers walk dogs, clean cages, play with cats, man the gift shop, foster animals, and counsel prospective pet owners. All told, hundreds of volunteers logged nearly 80,000 hours in 2013. But those volunteers report they get more than they give. “They are enriched as much as the animals are by the experience,” Wiese said. At the animal shelter, volunteers perform the vital role of helping animals get exercise and socialization, helping their physical and mental well-being. The interaction helps animals de-stress. Even sick cats tend to recover faster when they have frequent interaction with people, Wiese said. Volunteers also foster families to take animals into their home temporarily. For example, a foster family might care for a mother cat and a litter of kittens until

they are ready to be adopted. The oneon-one time with a foster family helps shape the animals’ personalities, too. “A lot of times when our foster kittens and puppies get back, they’re socialized,” she said. “They’re friendly and happy.” In December, individuals can “adopt a pet” from the humane society’s giving tree and donate items that animal could use, such as toys or needed medication. The humane society also accepts gently used towels, blankets, beds and other pet supplies. RONALD MCDONALD HOUSE OF OMAHA rmhcomaha.org The simple act of preparing and sharing of a meal can make a difference for families who are experiencing possibly the hardest time in their lives. The families who stay at the Ronald McDonald House in Omaha house are away from home for weeks or months at

a time while their child receives medical care. The volunteers who provide families with home-cooked meals are also offering a piece of normal life during a stressful time. “It helps provide that sense of normalcy to families when they come here,” said Jennifer Tyler, director of programs and outreach. A home-cooked meal not only nourishes the body, it nourishes the soul that families can continue to the next day to provide support for their child, she said. The Ronald McDonald House has served families from 43 states and three countries during their time of need. Up to 20 families can be at the house at one time. The average length of stay is 41 days, but some families stay much longer while a child receives treatment in Omaha. Volunteers can assist in planning or coordinating evening activities and supplying and cooking meals. Their work

can help make a difficult time easier for a family. “Our goal is to help relieve that financial burden, and help keep (families) together during their greatest time of need,” Tyler said. Kids and adults alike can make a difference by collecting pop tabs, soup can lids, and pet food lids. Groups in Omaha collect enough pop tabs to pay the electricity bill at the Ronald McDonald House for an entire year. Throughout the year, Ronald McDonald House Charities organizes fundraising events to support its program. Groups of volunteers are needed to pour wine at the December “12 days of Brixmas” event at Brix in Village Pointe. The wine tasting event includes a $5 donation to benefit Ronald McDonald House Charities. The charity is also in need of new winter coats and gear for families who did not anticipate staying through the winter months. DECEMBER 2014

It’s a scenario Junior League of Omaha is trying to alleviate. “We found out that a lot of kids didn’t have books at home, and we really wanted them to have that favorite book they could pull of the bookshelf,” said Jen Alloway, president of the Junior League of Omaha. The League began collecting gen-

tly used children’s books in 2011 and distributing them to children through local organizations. Over the years, the “A Book of My Own” program has given away over 50,000 books for babies, children, and young adults. In 2014 alone, the organization has distributed nearly 10,000 books. “Our goal is to have every child who can benefit from a book have one to take and call it their own,” said Sarah Lopez, chairwoman for the program. The vast majority of the distributed books come from community members. Businesses, churches, schools, or

COVER story organizations host book drives to collect gently used children’s books. Individuals can drop off gently used books at three Omaha locations. Volunteers are needed to help sort the books and distribute them via 38 Omaha organizations. Alloway said the excitement is palpable when children receive the books. “Their faces light up when you tell them, ‘You can take the book home with you,’” she said. OMAHA PROJECT LINUS omahaprojectlinus.org Omaha’s early cold snap has meant more organizations are calling Omaha Project Linus for help. Part of a national network, Project Linus brings handmade blankets to children in need. Over the course of the organization’s 11 years in Omaha, the organization has given away 53,000 blankets to children in the greater Omaha-Council Bluffs area. Project Linus blankets have gone to pediatric units and to children of deployed soldiers. They have gone to adopted children and children in foster care and children who have lost a parent. Regardless of the circumstance, the blankets offer both physical and emotional warmth. The fact that a stranger cared enough to make a handmade blanket means something, said Ginny DeBates, Project Linus coordinator. “From what we hear, the blankets make a huge difference to the kids themselves and to their families,” she said. Those who have donated blankets include expert quilters and children. The project is a great way to get children involved with giving back, Bates said. Even young children can make a fleece tied blanket. “You plant that seed young, and they feel how good it feels to help somebody else,” she said. Project Linus also can use gift certificates to fabric stores to aid a dedicated group of sewers in making more blankets. The organization also accepts donations of extra fabric or yarn. As Christmas approaches, DeBates expects calls from organizations requesting blankets to increase. “The need doesn’t ever go away, but around Christmastime our need goes way up,” she said.

hen Dan Matuszek started Brix at Village Pointe five years ago, he wanted to provide an experience for customers that centered around wine, beer, and spirits. He created an all-in-one concept with a bistro, a retail store, and an event center. The retail store and event center haven’t changed much over the years, but the bistro, which originally served tapas and other small plates, is now a full service restaurant with more than 30 items on the menu.

“Our customers wanted great food at great prices, so that’s what we’re giving them,” Matuszek said. Brix even has a new tag line: ‘fun dining, not fine dining.’ And a lot of emphasis is placed on the fun. “It’s an enjoyable atmosphere where you can sample many different wines and beers, both at our wine dispensers in the bistro and now at our new beer bar in the retail side. Plus you can walk around and shop while you do it, so that makes us unique.” Last fall they knocked down a wall and put access between the restaurant and the retail store at the Village Pointe location so customers could easily walk back and forth. “A lot of people who shop here didn’t even know we have a bistro,” Matuszek said. Customers also wanted to be able to sample craft beers, so they added a beer bar at the back of the retail store with 20 craft beers on draft. The bistro offers 64 different wines and six to eight are changed out each week depending on what new wines come in or have a good rating. “The advantage to sampling is you can

try different beer and wines for very little investment,” he added. Pairing food with all those samples is a big part of the draw at Brix. Beth Bachmann, head chef at the Village Pointe location, describes the menu as comfort food with simple, fresh flavors. She said as they worked on the menu

OUR food recipes together and have been coordinating to streamline the kitchens at both the Village Pointe and Midtown Crossing locations. “We are putting a lot of energy into standardizing recipes and processes between both locations,” Rickard said. With their vast culinary backgrounds, they are both making sure the restaurant part of Brix is living up to Matuszek’s all-in-one vision. Matuszek noted an interesting aspect about Brix that makes it appealing to many people. He said some customers like going into the bistro and sitting in front of the large modern fireplace and having a quiet dinner with their wine.

While others prefer to hang out in the retail store among the bottles and busy shoppers. “We have just as many tables in the retail side as we do in the restaurant,” he said. “And we offer the exact same full menu in both. It’s just a matter of how people want to use the space.” They now offer lunch on Sundays in the retail store. For larger events, Brix does have an event room where they hold wine and beer dinners, a New Year’s Eve buffet, and other special events. They’ve had some of the best winemakers in the industry hold dinners there. “We were one of only nine locations in the world

where Opus One chose to have a wine dinner,” Matuszek said. Bachmann and Rickard create full menus for these special events, first tasting the wine or beer products then matching food items to the flavors. Matuszek wants customers to come in and hang out, whether it’s in the restaurant, the retail store, at one of their Saturday tastings, or even during one of their upcoming ’12 Days of Brixmas’ charity events. “We want people to have a fun experience,” he said. “And we want people to know we have great food to go with it. Once you try it, I think you’ll want to come back.”

ith the holidays upon us, the season of gift giving has arrived. From jewelry and watches to toys and keepsakes, gifts come in all shapes and sizes. They are as unique as the person receiving them, creating an endless symphony of bags, boxes, gift tags, ribbons and bows. A beautifully wrapped gift will leave a lasting impression on the recipient. By wrapping each present with care and style, your friend or loved one will know the thought you put into their gift long before they open it. Follow these simple tips and tricks to ensure your gifts look like they were wrapped like a pro. SUPPLIES In addition to gift wrap you’ll need a variety of other supplies to help achieve quality results. These include a t-square or yard stick for measuring paper, double sided tape, and a sharp pair of cut-ting shears or a rotary cutting device. Use sticky notes to mark each package until your gift tags are ready to help avoid confusion.

S

SIGNATURE LOOK Determine what your signature gift giving look will be this season, and pick a color palette. Select a primary paper and add embellishments to create a uniform but polished look. When friends and family see your gift under the tree, they’ll know who it’s from before they even read the tag. MEASURE TWICE AND CUT ONCE Measure your box and then your paper before cutting to avoid mistakes. The paper should extend slightly more than halfway down the side of the box when folded over the ends. Once you begin wrapping, eliminate excess paper. This will help to achieve a smooth and professional look. BEYOND THE BOW Once your paper wrapping is complete, think beyond the bow. Adorn gifts with berries, greenery, pinecones or ornaments. Re-place traditional ribbon with twine or burlap for a shabby chic appearance, or for a more upscale look use metallic fabric or tulle. GIFT TAGS Don’t forget the gift tag! Choose from a multitude of options at your local craft store or make your own. Running short on time after all of that meticulous wrapping? Create custom labels online that can be used from year to year and season to season. DECEMBER 2014

hat was once considered a luxury, often during vacation, massage therapy is now a necessary part of overall health and well-being — similar to exercise and eating right. It is also affordable and available to anyone through membership programs. But not all massages are created equal, and Jamie Burrow, owner of Massage Heights, has gone the extra mile to ensure his guests have that spa-like, pampered experience. From the moment you walk through the door at Massage Heights, you’re given the attention you deserve and can relax in the serene environment, taking in the lavender scented candles and soothing soft colors. A former football player at the University of Nebraska at Lincoln, he suffered from injuries in college and chronic pain as an adult. “I had never had massage

therapy before, and it was like night and day,” he said. “I use it for stress and tension management as well as increased blood flow and general health and well-being.” Massage Heights offers a number of different types of massage services, and its 20 therapists are all trained in mul-

Not only do the therapists go through an extensive verbal interview and a massage practical, but guests are educated by the lifestyle consultants to find out what their needs are. “We want to set up both our guests and therapists for success,” Burrow said. “We recommend you have a primary therapist and two others you like as well, that way you always have a good experience.” All new guests receive an hour-long massage for 64 |

COMMON INTERESTS,

COMMON GOAL

Korbin Meink & Jeffrey Heinz | Age 16 | Skutt Catholic High School As young boys, both Korbin Meink and Jeffrey Heinz developed a love for the sport of wrestling. For Jeffrey, taking up the sport of wresting in kindergarten was following in his family’s footsteps. His father had been a wrestler and his Uncle Steve had been a state champion. His older brothers had also wrestled — James placed fifth at state in 2007 for Bennington High School and John qualified for state competition in 2013 for Fort Calhoun High School. Jeffrey is a six time Mat Master Champion at the Huskerland State Tournament, winning each year from third through 8th grade. Korbin played many sports as a youth: football, soccer, baseball, swimming, gymnastics, and track. When it came to wrestling, it was his mother that convinced the family he should give it a try and now the entire family is passionate about the sport. Korbin began wrestling at Platteview and when he needed more challenging practice partners he moved to Plattsmouth. As he continued to improve, he moved between various wrestling clubs — BJSA, KWAA, MWC, and finally Meneely. Korbin is also a six time Mat Master Champion at the Huskerland State Tournament. When the time came for Korbin and Jeffrey to decide what they were going to do for their high school wrestling careers, the decision was an easy one to make. Skutt Catholic High School has won 15 of the last 16 Class B state titles and coach Brad Hildebrandt has an excellent reputation. Korbin had been receiving private lessons from Coach Hildebrandt and as a result had started to follow the Skutt program. At meets, the Skutt wrestlers were booed by others and Korbin knew at that point that was where he wanted to wrestle because he knew people took notice of the team. For Jeffrey, he wanted the opportunity to become a state competitor as others in his family had done. Entering their freshman year in the fall of 2013, Korbin and Jeffrey started as adversaries competing for a spot in the same weight category. They both worked exceptionally hard to earn the spot, each becoming a better wrestler as a result. It

was ultimately decided it was in the best common interest of the boys and the team to compete at different weight classes, Korbin at 106 pounds and Jeffrey at 113 pounds. No longer competing, a tight knit friendship was forged. Korbin and Jeffrey are nearly inseparable both at school and away. Jeffrey’s family lives in Fort Calhoun and his dad, who works in Elkhorn, transports Jeffrey to and from school most days. When there are school activities, or inclement weather, Jeffrey often stays at Korbin’s house. Jeffrey is considered a member of the Meink family and they now refer to the guest bedroom as “Jeff’s Room” and have him perform chores around the house. The boys are even known to coordinate their clothing, as they did for their EDGE Magazine photoshoot. During their freshman year at Skutt, both Korbin and Jeffrey became Class B state champions. Jeffrey finished the season with a record of 38-11. Korbin broke the school pin record with 36 pins and tied the school win record of 50 wins. Moving into their sophomore season, Jeffrey will be wrestling at either 120 or 126 pounds and Korbin at 113 pounds. Both are on the Huskermat All State Sophomore list with Korbin ranked second, and Jeffrey third. At school, both boys are on the academic honor roll. Away from the mat, Jeffrey enjoys fishing, working out, and watching movies. Korbin enjoys playing video games, hanging out with friends, and in the summer months, spending time on the lake and boating. Korbin is the son of Brant and Sheila Meink, of Omaha, and has two younger brothers, Peyton (12) and Kiernan (7). Jeffrey is the son of Jim and Debra Heinz, of Fort Calhoun, and has two older brothers, James and John.
