of you, I begin 2015 with great reflection. I look back on the previous year with all its ups and downs, challenges and joys. I think about the ways I’ve changed in the last year. And I think about the ways I can continue growing, changing, and improving in the year ahead. One of the amazing parts of leading this magazine is the opportunity to be inspired by the stories of the people in our neighborhood. In this issue, you’ll read about writer Brandon Bauer, already a published author at age 15. We profile two moms who aim to move the needle on childhood obesity. We have a lot of big dreamers in our community, and I’m
proud to share their dreams on our pages. The New Year is a lot about goals and where we imagine we can be. I hope this January, you too will seek out those untapped dreams and consider ways to achieve them. All my best, Jack Shotbolt Editor in Chief

hen Jason Troshynski with Grace Custom Homes designed a Street of Dreams house in the South Hamptons development in Gretna, he did so with the intention it would become someone’s “forever home.” Now that it is complete, he’s looking forward to having people enjoy all the special touches he incorporated into the 3,800 square foot ranch style home.

Jason has been building custom homes for a little over two years, but his family has been in construction for more than 40 years. He and his uncle, Ted Grace, partnered to form Grace Custom Homes and now build 15-20 homes per year, including major home renovations, primarily in West Omaha and surrounding communities. The South Hamptons home was built to showcase its location. “We hand-picked the lot it sits on for its wooded view and complete privacy,” Jason said. “You can’t see any of the neighbors, and the trees create a panoramic setting along the back of the house.” Even though it’s just minutes from West Omaha, it is also within walking distance of the Elkhorn River. “It provides a country feel while still being close to the city,” he said. To complement the stunning view, Jason added a covered deck and a patio off the walk-out basement that includes a fire pit bordered by a half wall that gives it an intimate, courtyard feel. The back of the house is also lined with large

The home’s interior incorporates an open floor plan and flex space on the main level, which can be used as a sitting room, office, or traditional dining room. The living room was designed for lots of seating, including room for a sectional sofa if desired, and the kitchen features an oversized, flat island. “It’s the largest an island can be and still use one slab of granite,” Sallie said. Unlike in many kitchens, you won’t find pendant lights above the island. “That’s so the view into the living room is unobstructed,” Sallie said. “Chandeliers in other parts of the room provide a more updated look.” Other features in the kitchen include all Thermador appliances, a gourmet cook top, custom range hood, and Sub-Zero fridge with custom cabinet front with hidden hinges. keep everyday ‘stuff,’” Sallie said. “Device chargers, wrapping paper, craft supplies—anything you want hidden and out of the way so the kitchen doesn’t become cluttered. It really serves as secondary office space.” The maple cabinets and wood walnut floors throughout the house have a distressed grey tone finish that blends with the warm grey and cream wall colors. The staircase, which is positioned toward the back of the house rather than right off the main entry, boasts an 18 foot wall that runs alongside it and is covered in cream-colored cork wallpaper with birch texturing. Sallie said all of the finishes and textures in the house are meant to complement the home’s backdrop, not overwhelm it. Jason built the home with a number of other “wow” factors, such as 12 foot ceilings and extra wide hallways and doorways. “It’s perfect for empty-nesters who may one day need it to be wheelchair accessible or able to add a ramp outside,” he said. Everything about the home was done with relaxation in mind. “I designed it to be peaceful and serene,” Jason said. “It truly is a destination home.” 20 |

Young author’s dreams come true
ixteen-year-old Brandon Bauer of Elkhorn may have been born with a cleft palate that has caused some difficulties in his life, but his creativity and determination as a young author speak volumes. Brandon released his first novel, “Heroes of Light: The Hidden Myth” in October 2014, and he is contracted for six more with Tate Publishing out of Oklahoma, which is the third largest publisher in the United States. The first book has already sold more than 500 copies, and book two will be released this spring. Brandon started the series at age 11. His dad and uncle had both given him several books on Greek mythology, and he instantly developed an affinity for the characters and their stories. He took his favorites and made up new adventures for them. “I wanted to give these characters personalities based on what they did and why they were in these stories,” Brandon said. “And as I worked on it, there was too much for just one book, so I decided to make it a whole series.”

Influenced by favorites such as Percy Jackson, Harry Potter, and Lord of the Rings, Brandon’s stories are fictional fantasies filled with action, adventure, and plenty of humor. Throughout the series three dark prophesies are revealed and fulfilled. The first book focuses on the first prophesy and its three chosen who are brought together: Athen, Perseus, and Hercules. “Some of the books will be about different characters, but everything is connected by the end of the series,” Brandon said. He keeps a writing notebook at school where he jots down plot ideas. From there he outlines every chapter, and then starts writing. “I’ll write every single day for a month or two, then take a couple months off,” he explained. After spending five years to complete the first book, his mother, Cathy, researched publishers and submitted it to just a few. Tate responded within a few weeks, and then they spent the next six months editing it and working on designing the cover, which Brandon was able to collaborate on and is extremely pleased with how it turned out. They are now working with Tate on

OUR future marketing and promoting the first book. Cody Crawford, a Marketing Consultant with Tate, said “Heroes of Light” is the type of story that appeals to all genre of readers and to all ages. “Brandon’s style of writing is great, and the way he cast his vision of the characters and story is impressive,” Crawford said. “We have a few young authors, but not many are able to write a full length novel. Brandon is an incredible, impressive young man.” Every author who publishes with Tate has a dedicated marketing consultant for the life of the book. Crawford is currently helping Brandon schedule book signings, radio interviews, and niche events such as school visits where he can interact with his audience. “Brandon is one of my better authors who can just be himself and engage people,” Crawford said. “My job is to help guide him in finding his audience. Both he and Cathy really understand what that’s about.” Brandon said his mom is his biggest supporter and has helped him with every step of the publishing process. Since he’s a minor, legally he can’t interact directly with the publisher, so Cathy has served as his liaison. “I’ve learned a lot about publishing, especially from other authors we meet at book signings,” Cathy said. “But I’m so proud of Brandon and happy to help him promote his work any way I can.” This has been through the support of friends and family to start. “Word of mouth and getting reviews is the best form of marketing,” Crawford added. “Heroes of Light” is marketed toward kids ages nine and up, but both Crawford and Brandon said anyone who likes high adventure will enjoy it. Brandon is currently writing the third book in the series, but he has all seven books outlined. He hopes to have a career in storytelling, whether it’s as an author or perhaps venturing into film as a director. As for giving advice to other aspiring authors, Brandon has a simple but important message: “You can do it. All you need is a good story.”

s your business healthy going into the New Year, or do you need it elevated to the next level? That’s a question Andrew Boehm, CEO of Elevated SEO and Web Design, asks local small and medium-sized businesses. His answer is that his company, with offices in Omaha and San Francisco, can help market, generate leads, and position businesses to be “seen” by consumers. With a background in broadcast journalism, marketing, and music promotion, Boehm decided to focus his efforts toward online marketing in 2010. “People are passionate about their businesses, and I’m passionate about helping them market those businesses,” he said. “After four years, we are confident in our business model.” This includes a number of marketing services, primarily in the areas of search engine optimization (SEO), web site development, content writing, and branding.

Search engine optimization is the process of improving a web site using tools such as key words to increase traffic to that site via search engines. “I tell clients it’s about getting their web site listed on the front page of Google,” said Lauren Taylor, Elevated SEO’s lead designer. Although it’s an investment and often takes at least three months to see results, Taylor said it’s one of the most important things a company can do. “They need to be found and seen by customers,” he said. Google uses algorithms to determine how sites are listed, and those algorithms change frequently. Boehm said they rely on a team of SEO experts and other programmers for their projects, VALERIE WALLACE-CAMP

Omaha ‘mompreneurs’ bring kid-friendly fun to balanced living
i
t’s a problem that has perplexed moms and dads for generations: How to get kids to eat their vegetables. Parents know their children need a balanced diet, but for whatever reason, kids can’t seem to agree. Omaha moms Deb Gray and Tammy Olson think they have a solution both kids and parents will love. The two have written a book that blends a superhero story with multicolored bracelets to reward kids for healthy behavior. “Alex Chan and His Balanced Body Bands” aims to make healthy lifestyles fun for elementary-aged children. Kids track their healthy behavior with “body bands” bracelets, and if they keep it up for 21 days, they earn a special reward from participating local businesses.

has two children ages 7 and 9. Both Gray and Olson also knew that these unhealthy behaviors could have consequences over time. Gray, a long-time personal trainer, has watched obesity rates soar despite an increase in public awareness about the importance of healthy eating and exercise. Childhood obesity has more than doubled in children ages 6 to 11 and quadrupled in adolescents ages 12 to 19 in the past 30 years, the Centers for Disease Control reported. In 2012, more than a third of children and adolescents were overweight or obese. Gray thought to use bands – a popular kids item already – as a tool to encourage healthy behaviors. Children start with 21 bands on one arm, color-coded
for vegetables, fruit, exercise, good deeds and more. When the child eats a piece of fruit, for example, that band moves to the other arm. Once all of the bands have been moved that day, the child gets a sticker for his superhero shield. After 21 stickers, the shield is complete and the child gets a special reward. “Anytime you can make something fun and interactive – and not have guilt over anything and be positive with it – that’s where you see the true change,” Gray said. Olson backed the system with a superhero story to excite kids. In the book, characters Rylee and Logan, who are named after Olson and Gray’s oldest kids, sneak into the kitchen for a midnight sugar binge. Upset stomachs

Chan shows the kids how to follow in his footsteps so that they, too, can get healthy and be strong enough to thwart foes like the Lazy Monster. Olson, a former therapist who has worked with children, said the series of short-term, medium-term and longer-term rewards are an effective way to create changes in kids’ behavior. “Anything that has to do with rewarding kids is huge,” she said. The rewards also put the kids in control. They get to make the choices that will help move bands. “I think the key is getting the kids invested where they are the ones saying they want to do it,” Olson said. kids are asking for fruits and vegetables so they can move their bands. At a pizza restaurant, one mother was surprised to see her child opt for the salad bar. Another mother reported that her daughter tried her first vegetable only after she got the bands. “Now she can’t wait to go to the grocery store because she gets to try different colors and foods, “ Olson said. Parents of bands-wearing children have also reported making more healthful choices, Olson said. Using the bands with her own children forced her to stock healthier items from the grocery store. “Now I know my daughter doesn’t want the Pringles, so I have to make sure I have packs of carrots, cucumbers, and broccoli,” she said. Gray and Olson are currently talking to local researchers about future studies that could measure how much the product affects kids’ choices. If the body bands prove to be as effective as Gray and Olson believe, they hope to expand the bands to schools and organizations. Currently, parents can purchase the bands on their website, balancedbodybands.com, and on Amazon. In the future, the two moms see the bands concept stretching to other behaviors, whether completing chores or being kind. Plus, the mothers’ younger children, Delaney and Skylar, are eager for their own literary fame in the next book.

In fact, not only does Louie’s have a full bar, more than 20 craft beers, and wines from around the world, they also have a gourmet menu, making the restaurant an upscale place, but with an emphasis on comfort.

CLASSIC BURGER WITH QUINOA SALAD
“Recently, a customer said she likes coming here because she feels so comfortable,” Burrow said. “That’s the highest compliment someone can pay us.” He said that for a long time wine bars were thought to be pretentious, but Burrow wants to debunk that myth. “We’re more pub guys, not club guys,” he said. “A lot of our customers aren’t wine drinkers, but because our wines are so accessible, they’ll often sample them and find something they like, then come back for more.” Their wines on tap change almost weekly, and Louie’s does have a sommelier on staff, giving them the same high level of experience as a fine dining restaurant, but with a casual flare. “Wine is supposed to be fun, and that’s the approach we have taken,” Burrow said. “People often misconstrue what we are, but we want people to come here and have fun with friends, family, and even our staff.” He said they treat their regulars like family, giving them hugs when they walk in the door. Some of their new offerings in the upcoming year will include beverages with a local connection. Currently their beef is all sourced from Nebraska.
Louie’s has also made a move toward becoming a 99 percent scratch kitchen. The four pork gnocchi is a best seller made with slow-roasted prosciutto, pork shoulder, ground pork, Italian sausage, and a red-wine cream reduction. The staff favorite is the steak portobella truffle mac. And a large number of items on the menu are either gluten-free or can be easily modified to be gluten-free. “When John interviewed with us, we knew we had something special with him,” Burrow said. “If you’ve been to Louie’s in the past, we’re a different restaurant now, and I’d say we’re at our best, doing things in the kitchen you won’t see anywhere else in Omaha.”
This includes seasoning their fries with fresh herbs and parmesan, adding kale to a burger, and serving four different kinds of mimosas during their made-toorder Sunday brunch, such as traditional orange juice, grapefruit juice, grape juice, and cranberry juice. Burrow said they’re always trying to push the limits with their offerings while keeping things comfortable. “We’re looking at introducing some creative happy hours this year and testing new products to see how they’re received by guests. At the end of the day, our goal is to ensure our guests are happy and that they have an amazing experience.”

eeping your vehicle clean in the winter is more than a cosmetic necessity, it’s vital to the life of your car. Scott Brannan, Owner of Detail Guy shares some of his tips to keeping your vehicle looking its best in the harsh winter months as well as helping to extend its longevity on the road. A complete automobile detail is a practical and wise, investment.
APPLY A PAINT SEALANT Your car is most likely going to be exposed to extreme weather this winter that will wreak havoc on its pain. An excellent protective coating to apply is a synthetic polymer paint sealant. A paint sealant is better equipped to protect against water, chemicals and road salts then a carnauba wax. Polymer paint sealants contain cross-linking chemicals that when applied properly form a protective bond against these winters elements that can last for five to six months. TREAT YOUR INTERIOR Winter is hard on our interiors, cold dry air pulls the moisture from our leather, vinyl and plastics. Its important to treat these surfaces with a good leather and vinyl conditioner to prepare these surfaces for the onset of winter. Carpets just need a good vacuum and some type of rubber mat in place to protect the carpets from winter slush, gravel, snow and salts. PROTECT EXPENSIVE WHEELS If you have to drive this winter with your expensive wheels make sure they are protected with same high quality synthetic polymer pain sealant that was used to protect your paint to also protect the finish of your wheels. I would only recommend that you apply this coating more often to ensure a stronger bond on the wheels to protect them from the harsh road salts and chemicals.
S
WATERPROOF CONVERTIBLE TOPS If water is able to penetrate your top then freezes, your top will be prone to severe damage. Your top must be thoroughly cleaned and sealed (waterproofed) prior to exposing it to winter weather. KEEP YOUR CAR CLEAN Finally, another quick and easy way to reduce damage to your paint caused by winter weather is to wash your car as much as possible. This process will allow you to inspect the paint for paint chips and scratches caused by winter roads. If chips or scratches are found seal them with a pain sealant to prevent further damage from occurring. JANUARY 2015

Not just a fad diet
he Paleo diet — you may have heard the term and think it’s just another low-carb, fad diet. But those who have made it a part of their healthy lifestyle will tell you it’s simply about eating “real food” like our ancestors did during the Paleolithic Era. The results can include not just weight loss, but improved sleep, improved complexion, and even reversal of disease and illness. Terry Shanahan, a Functional Nutrition Consultant, has spent more than a decade studying and researching diet, natural medicine, and supplementation. After suffering for years from chronic illness, fatigue, and inflammation, he now helps thousands of individuals transition to a Paleo lifestyle. “So many of the health problems people face are derived from the foods we eat,” he said. “As a society we’ve become out of touch with what’s important when it comes to our health.”

The Paleo diet comprises three areas: nutrient dense foods, foods with anti-inflammatory properties, and foods that promote proper hormonal function and support. The types of foods that fall into these categories are properly raised animal proteins such as grassfed beef, free-range chicken, and wild caught fish; traditional vegetables and root and tuber vegetables, such as sweet potatoes and yams; all fruits; whole nuts and seeds; and healthy oils such as coconut and almond. Dairy, wheat, and processed sugars are all eliminated from the diet. And it’s not a low-carb diet, it’s actually high in healthy carbs. Sustaining that type of diet can certainly be challenging, but more retailers are recognizing the demand and supporting people who want to have a healthier lifestyle. Evolve Paleo Chef 62 |

Jason Fechter and Caleb Summers are the owners and original chefs of Evolve Paleo Chef, which started two years ago in Kansas City. “Eating healthy doesn’t mean the food has to taste bad,” Summers said. “We provide amazing quality, delicious food at an affordable price, and there’s no kitchen clean-up afterward.” Customers can order as many or
as few items as they want, there are no minimums and no contracts, and food can either be delivered or picked up. The store also serves as a juice bar and has grab ‘n go items for snacks or lunches. The menu changes weekly and includes entrees such as chicken Oscar, pork carnitas, baby back ribs, and chili mac. “It’s all completely wheat and gluten-free, doesn’t use processed sugars, and is completely dairy free,” Fechter said. “We don’t use any of the foods that cause inflammation, which can lead to disease.” Many grocers carry Evolve Paleo Chef’s items, such as Hy-Vee, which also heavily supports the Paleo community. Shelly Asplin, a Registered Dietician with the Hy-Vee at 180th & Pacific Streets, said they carry many Paleo-friendly foods and even sell their own line of almond and coconut flours. 1215 S. 180th Street 402.933.0500 tutorinomaha.com

“We provide recipes and samples of foods that use these ingredients so customers can try them and see they actually taste good,” Asplin said. “Many people are trying to have a better diet but do it in a way that’s sustainable for a lifetime,” she added. Sustainability is one of the key components to Shanahan’s Paleo transition plan, which includes scientific-backed education, an online support community, and a full action plan with steps for those at the beginning, intermediate, and advanced stages. “A beginner step might simply be to cut out soda for three days,” Shanahan said. “Once that step is complete, you move on to another step. It’s all done at your own pace.” Whether your goal is to lose weight, improve athletic performance, or improve systems from illness and disease, Shanahan said at the very least, everyone he has worked with has reported feeling better to some degree. “Paleo is the way we were meant to eat,” he said. “I encourage all my clients to adopt the lifestyle 100 percent. But even if you follow it 80 percent of the time, every little bit helps.” 64 |

John Bartels Hiscock, better known as Bart, has been shooting hoops since he was a toddler. What started as a child’s game in the basement eventually became something much more for Bart. He continued to play as an elementary student and in the fifth grade began playing competitively with the Omaha Grizzlies organization and continued to do so through eighth grade. During the summer, Bart plays for the Omaha Sports Academy (OSA) Crusaders National Team. As a student at Bennington High School, Bart is a member of the varsity basketball team. For the 2013 - 14 season, he averaged 15.9 points per game and 11.7 rebounds — placing him in first for Class B players in the state. At the end of the season, he was named to the EMC all-conference team, the All Omaha area team by the Omaha World-Herald, and to the AP All-State 2nd team for Class B. Bart and his parents credit his coaches for helping shape him into the player he is today. He has had great coaches throughout his basketball career, starting with his grandfather, John Bartels, whom he is named after. Bart’s athletic skills also carry over onto the football field in the fall. Off the court, Bart participates on the Bennington High School leadership council, Fellowship of Christian Athletes, and is a member of the National Honor Society. He sings with the a cappella group Blue Rendezvous, as well as the concert choir. His studies take priority and he carries a perfect grade point of 4.0. Bart also enjoys fostering a love for basketball and football in younger kids. He works at Bennington youth camps helping children in the area learn more about both sports that he loves and helping to shape future Bennington teams. Bart is the son of Brett and Julie Hiscock, of Bennington, and has a younger sister, Alexandra (15).
