If you’ve

driven on I-80 to Lincoln, you’ve probably wondered about the shining glass church atop a hill just before the Platte River. But I doubt many of us have ever decided to press pause in our busy lives and turn off the road to find out more.

Getting to the Holy Family Shrine is a bit of a pilgrimage itself. As iconic as it is from the interstate, the shrine is still off the beaten path. This month we take you there. It’s a scenic place, even serene, a bit of peace in the middle of a hectic world. Spaces like these spark internal reflection and appreciation for the world around us. Letting our curiosity take the wheel for an afternoon and discovering new territory is like a breath of fresh air. It’s easy to get caught up in our regularly scheduled programming. Remembering to be present in the moment – whether

it’s at a place like Holy Family Shrine, your community church or your own backyard – can help us feel spiritually connected. With those ideas in mind, I invite you to take time this month to take the road less traveled and discover something new, even if it’s just around the corner. Our community has so many places that can inspire discovery, creativity and joy. It’s just a matter of embracing the moment and experiencing them. Jack Shotbolt Editor in Chief

b

uilding your dream home may seem like a bucket list item, but Tom and Michele Kelly were able to cross it off their list three years when they built their 4,700 square foot custom ranch in The Hamptons in Elkhorn. The home is nestled in a wooded area surrounded by bur oak trees and an evolving parade of wildlife. Designed and built by Curt Hofer Construction, the home is currently on the market and ready for the right family to continue enjoying its charm.

Old-style character, modern conveniences

The Kelly’s moved to Omaha from West Point, NE to be closer to family. “We’ve loved being able to entertain and have our four sons and their families visit, but now we’re ready to downsize,” Michele said. “This house would be perfect for a family with teenagers since there’s three bedrooms in the basement, and they could have their own living space.” The home has an open floor plan that stretches across the sloping lot, giving it different levels across the main floor with stunning views. There are windows that look out onto the trees from every room of the house, including the walkin pantry. The lower level is especially unique in that it has its own deck rather than a patio like most walk-out base-

ments. “It’s my favorite place to sit and listen to the birds,” Michele said. “It’s like our own private aviary.” The Arts and Crafts style, also known as Craftsman, is another unique feature of the home. Arts and Crafts houses became popular in the U.S. in the early 1900s, following the movement in England. It’s identified by homes that use lots of wood, stone, numerous windows — often some with stained glass, builtin cabinets, and seating with straight edges. The Kelly’s home has all of these, including a custom-designed stained glass window between the office and master bedroom closet that was made by Lambrecht Glass Studio in downtown Omaha. Michele decorated the home, choosing all the granite countertops, tile backsplash, and lighting. She worked closely with Marshall Wallman, Vice President of Design with Curt Hofer Construction. “The Kelly’s were wonderful people to work with,” Wallman said. “It’s a home that presents a lot of character. It has a lot of charm you find in older homes, but with all the new home conveniences.” Some of these include a large center

island in the kitchen, three gas fireplaces throughout the home, a three and a half car garage, and walk-in master bath shower. One of the Kelly’s favorite rooms in the house is the four seasons sitting room off the kitchen. “The pine walls and ceiling make it feel like a little cabin in that one room,” said Steve Huber, President of Curt Hofer Construction. “We used lots of natural products, such as stone on the exterior and lots of wood, which goes with that Arts and Crafts style.” The floors in the home are made of Brazilian cherry wood, there’s Ipe decking outside, and all the cabinets are oak. The Kelly’s enjoy the privacy that living in a wooded area brings, but they are still less than ten minutes from the city. “I wanted to move to Omaha, but I’m also a private person,” Michele said. “It’s just so peaceful here.” Michele’s husband, Tom, is able to work out of his home office on the main floor that also offers lush, tree-lined views. He said he enjoys the laid-back nature their home provides, but they’re also able to socialize. “We love this neighborhood and our neighbors,” he said. “It’s been the perfect home for us.”

A peaceful place of beauty and comfort.

ituated on 23-acres overlooking the Platte Valley, along Interstate 80 between Omaha and Lincoln, is a wood and glass structure that many people have wondered — what is it? This common curiosity is what brings more than 25,000 people each year to visit the Holy Family Shrine, a place where all are welcome to find relaxation, comfort, peace, and solitude in a divine setting. Like most of life’s journeys, creating, developing, and building the Shrine followed a varied path. Its four founders shared a vision for a space where travelers could stop, similar to other shrines built around the country. After an anonymous donor gave funds to purchase the land and build the structure, architects were hired to design it, inspired by the works of renowned architect Fay Jones, who studied under Frank Lloyd Wright and designed the Thorncrown Chapel in Arkansas.

TO DONATE The Holy Shrine relies on donations each year, you can donate by visiting www.HFSGretna.org to read more about the Shrine and donate today.

Deacon David Christensen, who gives tours of the Shrine, schedules retreats, concerts, and other events, said Holy Family is a place where people of all faiths can come and be in a private setting. “It’s a place for people to just be with the Lord,” he said. The founders were all of Catholic Faith, and a Catholic mass is held in the chapel every Saturday morning at 10:00 am. But it’s not a parish—there is no priest—so weddings, funerals, and baptisms aren’t allowed. “Celebrating anniversaries or holding memorial masses are welcomed,” Christensen said. The Shrine consists of the chapel and a visitor center. Guests enter the visitor center through an entrance carved out of the side of a hill to resemble Christ’s tomb. Inside they are greeted by a spiraling sculpture from the lit ceiling, which represents Christ’s shroud found in the tomb. Underneath is a pool of water that creates a path leading outside where you’ll find a

covered grotto on the way to the chapel. The water feature continues inside the chapel all the way to where it collects underneath the altar, its ripples gently echoing throughout the serene interior. The Shrine took five years to complete due to its intricate design and labor-intensive construction. It was first built using only wood, but a windstorm blew it down during construction, so the next build included steel beams for reinforcement. The chapel’s entry façade is made of western red cedar and glass with upper trusses that interlace to resemble wheat blowing in a field. The floor is covered in hand-laid limestone blocks. Wooden pews, which can hold up to 130 people, are surrounded by glass walls the look upon the traditional Catholic altar. “It’s amazing to be in the chapel at night and see the stars,” Christensen said. On the grounds outside the chapel there is a picnic area and additional benches at the base of the crucifix that towers in front of the Shrine. “Many people don’t realize this is a chapel, so

we added the crucifix several years ago,” Christensen said. They are also adding life-size walking Stations of the Cross throughout the grounds. The first statue, Jesus praying in the Garden of Gethsemane, is finished, and as the Shrine receives donations, they will continue to add more. Donations are necessary for the continued operation of the Holy Family Shrine. There is no charge to visit and they aren’t funded by government or religious organizations, so they rely solely on contributions. They conduct giving campaigns twice a year, at Christmas and again in the spring, but funding is needed year round. Matt Sakowski is the full-time groundskeeper and performs maintenance, such as sanding and resealing the pews, flooring, and seasonal landscaping. He’s also leading a project to find help restoring fourteen wood and metal donated plaques, depicting the Stations of the Cross that will hang on the chapel walls when finished. In addition to donations, the Shrine relies on more than 30 volunteers to help with a number of daily aspects from greeters to gift shop workers. Bus tours, elementary school retreats, and scout troops all come to visit. “The volunteers are the best part,” Sakowski said. “It’s amazing the amount of time they give, and the Shrine couldn’t survive without it. Their individual stories are also touching, and what they experience while here is what inspires others to come and visit for themselves.”

Omaha OB-GYN offers personalized care focused on women

m

elissa Dahir wishes more women realized they don’t need to suffer in silence. Dahir, nurse practitioner at Omaha OB-GYN Associates, P.C., specializes in treating health issues that are frequently difficult for women (and their doctors) to talk about. Pain during intercourse, vaginal dryness, low libido – all are topics many women know about firsthand, but often struggle to share with their doctor. That’s where Dahir comes in. She works to gain her patients’ trust so that they can express their concerns and get the treatment they need. “These are very emotional and personal things, and I try to provide a setting that feels comfortable, confidential, and secure,” she said.

en may not have vocalized in previous decades. “Fifty years ago, nobody talked about incontinence or menopause,” said Dr. Andrea Leishman-Barb. “Now that there are options out there, I think people seek treatment that they wouldn’t have in the past.” Women-centered clinics like Omaha OB-GYN can help women navigate health needs throughout their lives. The clinic’s physicians and nurse practitioners are steeped in expertise on women’s unique health issues – and that’s an advantage for patients. “Because we’re more specialized, we’re better at the things we do,” said Dr. Jill Burke. There’s also a convenience factor. At the group’s Lakeside Clinic, patients can undergo various procedures in the office and avoid a separate trip to the hospital. in midtown Omaha. Physicians have privileges at several Omaha-area hospitals, including CHI Health Lakeside and Methodist Women’s Hospital. The group participates in most managed care and commercial insurance plans. Doctors say the private practice setup also allows them to give more personalized care to their patients. They accompany women through some of the major milestones in their lives – an aspect of the job Burke enjoys. “I love knowing patients from when they are in their 20s and dating someone, to getting engaged, having a baby or two or three, to now starting their peri-menopause transitions,” Burke said. “I like the continuity and that I know them for all these stages of their life.” Advances in technology and treatment have meant women have more choices as they approach different life stages and health issues. Burke noted that Omaha OB-GYN

does more genetic screenings for breast cancer than any other obstetrician-gynecologist practice in Nebraska. Genetic testing allows women to better understand any genetic predisposition they may have toward breast cancer. That knowledge can help them to make an informed decision on whether to undergo risk-reducing surgery, such as a mastectomy (surgical removal of the breast) or oophorectomy (surgical removal of the ovaries). “We cannot make (the risk) zero, but we can decrease their chances quite a bit, Burke said. Minimally invasive procedures are another aspect in which women’s health care has changed in the last few years. Gynecological surgeries, such as hyster42 |

ectomies, now require smaller incisions and offer shorter healing time, Burke said. Women seeking to prevent pregnancy through tubal sterilization also have more options. Unlike a traditional tubal sterilization, the ESSURE procedure is noninvasive and is done with local anesthetic in the office. Endometrial ablation, another procedure completed in the office, can help relieve heavy periods. The Omaha OB-GYN team can also help women understand their contraception options. Dr. Jennifer Hill has seen increased interest in the IUD, a form of long-acting reversible contraception that is highly effective. When a woman decides to become

pregnant, the group can offer pre-pregnancy counseling to the future parents, including screening for rare genetic issues. Such screening can help parents prepare for the possibility of having a child with special needs. Helping women through pregnancy and childbirth are a big part of Omaha OB-GYN’s practice and a driving force for many doctors. “I love delivering babies,” Hill said. “That’s my favorite thing in the world to do.” Delivering a baby allows a doctor to be a part of one of the most special parts of a woman’s life, Burke said. “It’s so rewarding that they chose me to share that with them.” Later in life, women may experience changes that can affect sexual activity. As women approach menopause, their estrogen levels decrease, which may lead to vaginal dryness and slower sexual response. But sexual health issues can affect women of all ages. It’s up to medical practitioners like Dahir and her colleagues to help women feel comfortable enough to seek relief. At Omaha OB-GYN, the close relationship between doctor and patient can enhance the quality of care a woman receives as she experiences different health needs. “Since I know them well, I can share in their story and help them in a way that someone who is just meeting them for the first time can’t,” Burke said.

Women of all ages can experience sexual dysfunction. But according to nurse practitioner Melissa Dahir, many women are reluctant to seek treatment because of shame or embarrassment. Women who do visit a doctor may be met with insensitivity. “A lack of understanding for sexual health causes emotional distress and negatively impacts a woman’s identity,” Dahir said. Dahir wants women to know that when it comes to sexual issues, there is hope. Research-based treatments can help alleviate sexual dysfunction, such as pain with intimacy, and a lack of sexual desire. Pellet therapy is a popular form of testosterone replacement, she said, and can help improve mood, hot flashes, sexual functioning and fatigue. Vaginal or pelvic pain can be treated with oral medications, vaginal hormones, or a topical anesthetic. Other women may respond well to steroid injections. Women with severe pain may benefit from Botox injections, which can help relax tight muscles around the vaginal opening. New patients spend an hour with Dahir to allow her to listen and understand. “I realize it is difficult for women to discuss these sensitive issues, but their voices need to be heard,” she said. Consistency is the key ingredient

n the two years since Salt 88 opened, very little has changed. The elegant, modern Mediterranean-influenced dĂŠcor is still fresh and inviting. Almost all items on its Italian and Croatian-inspired menu are still available. A big spun cone of cotton candy is delivered to every table at the end of each meal. And for owners John and Jennifer Horvatinovich, continuing to do what works for their customers and for their employees is exactly how they like it.

John and Jennifer both have backgrounds in the restaurant business and worked at a restaurant together, which is how they met. John has traveled throughout the region, consulting and opening locations for other restaurant companies, including Hiro 88, which is just a few doors down. It was through a partnership there that he was able to open Salt, which he named because of the unique way it sounded when spoken aloud. “Salt isn’t a restaurant for everyone,” he said. “People who are willing to wait an hour or more to eat at a chain restaurant probably wouldn’t come here. But if you want an elegant experience, no matter what the occasion, then we can provide that.” John said many business customers and travelers come into the restaurant when they have an extra day to spend in town, or locals who want to start their vacation early. For this reason Salt makes its dinner menu available all day. “Knowing they can have it any time of day is a big reason why they come back,” he said.

Many companies enjoy hosting meetings in the private dining room that seats up to 40 people. The room is equipped with three TVs that are easily viewed from any seat, and there is no charge for the room during the week. There is also a south-facing covered patio opened seasonally that seats up to 80 people and has a quiet, golf-course view. The open dining room and large bar are perfect for smaller parties or couples who want a bite and glass of wine before going to a movie. But it’s the food that keeps people coming back. John, who is also the executive chef, said they have only reprinted the menu once after replacing a single item. “I’m very tough on myself, so I’ve made sure we have the highest standards from day one,” he said. That includes finding the best quality mesquite wood to cook their best-selling entrée, the Plank-fried Scottish Salmon. “After it’s cooked, the wood continues to crackle, leaving its smoky perfume behind across the room as it’s served,” he said. Another popular entrée is the Sirloin Puttanesca, which John created out of frustration after having problems with the consistency of a particular cut of

meat. “What we had wasn’t working, so I decided to make a dish as though I were cooking it for myself,” he said. “I took a classic Puttanesca sauce and made it my own.” He has also created 18 different pizzas, each with its own sauce. A different one is featured each week and listed on Salt’s web site. Another feature you’ll find at Salt 88 is that every item on the menu can be made as a gluten-free item, something John and Jennifer take very seriously because several staff members have Celiac Disease. “It’s not about just being able to say we’re a gluten-free restaurant,” Jennifer explained. “We don’t just want customers to like the gluten-free food while they’re here. We want them to feel good the next day too, which doesn’t always happen after eating out, even if the food claims to be gluten-free.” Whether it’s their customers or their staff, John and Jennifer want to help people celebrate milestones in their lives. “We want to be the restaurant where businesses celebrate the close of a big deal, a couple celebrating a night out, or one of our employees celebrating the purchase of a first home,” John said. “We’re just a mom and pop restaurant who care about people.”

ne of the biggest challenges for busy professionals and parents is finding time to work out. Eating healthy when you’re on the go is a close second. Corey Cain, owner of Black Clover Fitness, recognizes these challenges and has created personal training and nutrition programs that are fast, effective, and successful at helping those who are ready to feel better, younger, and have a healthier lifestyle. Cain’s background includes a degree in exercise physiology, working as a trainer in Hollywood, CA, on TVs “The Contender”, and starting the Omaha Adventure Boot Camp. In 2008, he opened the first Black Clover Fitness location on 168th & Maple and last year opened a second location off 192nd & Q Streets. Through both private and semi-private personal training sessions, Cain said he works primarily with clients ages 34-60 who “want some help regaining that youthful lust for life.”

OUR business

His business is built around five core values: professionalism, integrity, passion, communication, and humility. “Everything we do is built on the back of those values,” Cain said. “When we apply those to fitness as a service, then everyone is extremely successful.” Every team member has those core values, understands the importance of service, and must be effective at communicating. “We put a lot of emphasis on communication,” Cain said. “This is a career that requires talking to clients, even outside the gym via email or phone calls, which is why it’s one of our core values.” Personal training requires building relationships, so professionalism is also extremely important to Cain. “As an industry, we need more profession58 |

al people providing this service, so I want to help give the profession a good name,” he said. That professionalism includes hiring trainers who have the proper education background and spend six months training with Cain and his staff before working on their own with clients. The programs at Black Clover Fitness start with a consultation on nutrition and what clients currently eat on a daily basis. “We can fix a lot of problems just through nutrition,” Cain said. He developed the Take Down Lifestyle, which sets guidelines with options on how to be successful at eating. “We don’t cut out foods,” he said. “We teach people how to eat what they enjoy and still get the results they want.”

Following the nutrition consultation, Cain and his team work with clients to develop the best approach to training depending on the client’s goals, abilities and limitations, and time. “We have a lot of busy professionals who want to work on their health and fitness, but they can’t devote all their time to it,” Cain said. “Our workouts are generally fast and intense, lasting 30-45 minutes, two to three times per week.” The trainers change the workouts frequently, designing and developing them during weekly team meetings. The 3,500 square foot facility on 192nd & Q Streets is sleek and modern with a mix of traditional and cutting-edge equipment, including treadmills, elliptical machines, a hip sled, bar and dumb

bells, ropes, as well as the multi-tool Synergy 360 system from Life Fitness, and a vibrating Power Plate that engages small muscles during exercises. Both semi-private and private training is available, with semi-private sessions consisting of up to six participants. “We have a lot of flexibility with our training, and all clients can use the facility

anytime outside of their training times,” Cain said. Clients also participate in Take Down Challenges throughout the year. “We participate in lots of events and give back to charities,” Cain said. “In fact, we’re currently looking for someone to sponsor our May challenge. For every pound our participants lose, we’ll donate $1 to that local cause.”

Community, clients, and culture are all important to Cain. The experience of his staff, the commitment to their core values, and the caliber of its facilities all make Black Clover unlike any other fitness company. “We genuinely care about our clients,” he said. “They can have a better life, and they can have it by working out with us.”

STRENGTH

Michael Kyle Mollak | Elkhorn High School | Age 18 Michael grew up playing many sports as a child: basketball, football, lacrosse, hockey, track, and soccer. Sports were an important part of his childhood and he was always looking for a new sport to try. The summer after fifth grade, Michael discovered there was a recreational league for swimming and wanted to give it a try between the other sports that he was playing. During that summer, he met Chris Jenson, the Elkhorn Stormin’ Antlers high school swim coach. When the season came to an end, it was Jenson that suggested he try club swimming and Michael did that during the winter of sixth grade. Continuing to play multiple sports, as well as being involved with music, Michael faced the difficult decision in eighth grade of which sport to pursue in high school. Both swimming and basketball took place in the same season in high school. His love for swimming made the decision easier and ultimately grew so that Michael decided to make swimming his exclusive focus – and a year-round focus at both the high school and club levels. In high school, Michael swims for the man that influenced him to try club swimming, Chris Jenson. As a member of the Elkhorn Stormin’ Antlers swim team, he won a state championship last year as a member of the 200 medley relay team, posting a time that earned an All American time. He was also a state champion in the 200 freestyle with a time of 1:40.79. At the club level, Michael swims for the Greater Omaha Aquatics (GOAL). As a member of multiple relay teams, he has been helped set GOAL team records and Midwestern Swimming records in the 800 free relay, 400 medley relay, and the 400 free relay. His greatest individual accomplishment was achieved last summer when he swam a junior nationals time in the 100 breast stroke. Michael’s swim accomplishments are numberous. As a senior he is the team captain and has been an athletic letter winner each year. He was also the team MVP as both a sophomore and junior. He currently holds eight high school records, including five individual events: 100 freestyle, 200 freestyle, 500 freestyle, 100 breast stroke, and the 100 fly. When not in the pool, Michael is actively involved in Students Against Destructive Decisions (SADD). He also enjoys sharing his love and passion for swimming with others. He volunteers at the Special Olympics and is a volunteer coach on the summer recreational swim team at Westgate Pool. After graduating later this year, Michael will be headed to Missouri State University to study and swim. He is undecided on his field of study but is leaning toward education or the field of medicine. He wants to pursue a career that allows him to help people. Michael is the son of Len and Elise Mollak of Elkhorn. He has an older sister, Clare, who is a senior at the University of Nebraska and a Springer Spaniel named Charlie. VALERIE WALLACE-CAMP

GIFTED Ella Grace Pollard Spring Ridge Elementary | Age 10

As an infant, Ella Pollard quickly learned sign language from her mother so she could have a form of communication prior to her ability to speak, setting the tone that she wasn’t going to be your average child. Once it was clear that Ella was grasping things quickly as a toddler, her parents felt it was important to introduce her to different things she might enjoy, and eventually excel in. At the age of 5, she began dancing at The Dancer’s Edge studio under the instruction of Beth Gilbert, and studio owner Traci Stiles, where she was introduced to a variety of different classes. Within a year, Ella began to dance competitively in a variety of categories such as Jazz, Tap, Lyrical, Hip Hop, and Musical Theater. At the age of 9, Ella began to compete at a high level, taking home four first-place trophies at the 2014 Showstopper Dance Competition held in Omaha. After the Showstopper competition, she traveled to Branson Missouri to the Midwest National Dance Finals where she represented The Dancer’s Edge, competing in a number of categories, taking home three first place trophies, also receiving the Judge’s “Best Entertainer” awarded for her Jazz solo performance. In February of this year, Ella performed at the “Starpower” Dance Competition held at Iowa Western Community College in Council Bluffs, Iowa where she received first place finishes in Musical Theater, Hip Hop, Jazz, Lyrical, and first place for her Jazz Solo. Ella also loves music, and has been playing the violin with the Omaha Conservatory of Music since the age of 5. She is involved with the Frontier Strings Ensemble, which is a tour group of violinists and violists ranging in age from 9-18 years old. Ella is also involved for her second year in the Omaha Area Youth Orchestra, which will be performing their spring concert on March 1st at the Joslyn Art Museum. When not performing or practicing, Ella enjoys reading, hanging out with her friends, watching movies, tumbling, and making music videos as well. Her favorite musical artists are Taylor Swift and Bruno Mars. Ella has also participated in ringing the bells for the Salvation Army and Operation Christmas Child which is a Christian organization that provides children from Third World Countries to share the Good News of Christ and the meaning of Christmas. Ella is the daughter of Ken Pollard, and Denise Pollard of Elkhorn, and has a younger brother Grant who is 6, and a Kindergartner at Spring Ridge Elementary.
