When you’re able to be at home and spend time with family and friends, you want it to be a relaxing, comfortable place with plenty of space to fit everyone’s needs. And you want to feel like your home is a place where you can get away from all the hustle and bustle. One home in particular, located in the West Shores lake community off of Highway 275 and West Dodge Road, can offer all of that.

Built by Nathan Homes, the 4,590 sq. ft. custom ranch is considered casual contemporary in style. Nate Bumgardner, owner of Nathan Homes, said he specializes in this type of transitional home with modern elements. “With the size of ranch homes we build, especially on a walk-out lot, they offer so much flexibility,” he said. “The West Shores home is big, so families with older kids can have space for them in the basement.” The home has five bedrooms, three in the basement and two on the main floor with the master suite at one end that includes its own laundry room off the master closet. It has an open, inviting floor plan with 12-foot ceilings and 8-foot doorways that allow for a

light, bright look and feel. “It’s laid back luxury,” said CBS Home realtor Karen Jennings. “It’s beautiful, but it’s a casual environment. Nobody wants to live in a museum.” The kitchen was designed with multiple functions in mind. There are double islands—one for work space and prepping meals, and a second that has enough room for bar stools all the way around it. “It’s a space for daily life,” Jennings said. “You can eat, do homework, have coffee, and there’s still room in the kitchen for a traditional table.” The kitchen flooring provides the warm look of wood, but it’s actually tile, which provides durability and longevity. The walk-out basement was designed with families in mind and includes an expansive bar with faux finish details, a wine cellar, and a home theater. The home backs to a natural preserve, which offers plenty of privacy. It has access to the 200-acre recreational sand-bottom lake with the additional option to purchase a boat dock. “There’s just something about being near a lake that offers peace and quiet, and makes you feel better,” Jennings said.

FEAR NO MIRROR She described the ideal homeowner as empty nesters, a professional couple, or a busy family who doesn’t have time to spend on exterior maintenance. The home is on a villa lot, so lawn care and snow removal are included. Bumgardner designed the home to be zero entry, both from the garage into the house and through the front door, so that stairs aren’t an issue for disabled or older residents. Other elements that make the home unique are the matte finish granite countertops in the master bathroom, the oversized steel built-in fire pit on the back patio, and the fireplace surround, which is a 39x10 foot long thin tile product that looks like stone. “We wanted everything in the home to have clean lines,” Bumgardner said. “So we carried that throughout, from the steel planters on the outside to the cabinets on the inside. There’s nothing busy about the look of this house.” Even the furniture brought in for staging was to emphasize the casual atmosphere. Jennings said they worked with Cort Furniture and Stage Aura to showcase the large functional spaces in the home. “This house is exactly the way people want to live today,” she said. “Tall ceilings, covered decks, and beautiful custom accents. People should be able to love their home.”

ime and money—two things most people would like to have more of. But often the pursuit of more money actually decreases the amount of time spent on those things that are most important: family, friends, and the pursuit of passions. However, Lynn Hagedorn, an Omaha mother of three, has not only discovered the secret to having both, but she has made a career out of teaching others how to achieve it as well.

She’s been in the network marketing industry for more than 10 years and was a top 20 earner with a previous company. However, within her first 14 months at Isagenix, she became the first associate to earn more than $1 million, all from the comfort of home. Like many moms, Lynn felt the pressure of work, spending more time with her kids, and having extra income. She decided to try network marketing as a supplement to her job as a certified hand therapist and found it to be a good fit. “Women naturally network all the time,” Lynn said. “We love sharing new information with our friends and fam-

ily—people we know and trust.” Her business quickly grew through her simple approach: consistently work on it every day, and focus without letting life’s distractions interrupt. Soft spoken and naturally introverted, Lynn is the first to say she’s not a sales person and never considered herself a leader. But her father, Ron Nelson who is also an Isagenix associate, said when she talks, everybody listens. “When she’s passionate about something, she loves telling everyone around her about it,” he said. “She also works hard. She’s never just dipped her toe in the water; she jumps in.” It’s no coincidence the company she formed for her business is called “Cannonball.” Her immediate success was no surprise to those at Isagenix. “When we first met Lynn, she told us her goal was to help people around the world,” said Travis Garza, Chief Sales Officer with the company. “She surrounded herself with hard-working people like herself and constantly asked us what could she do to help those she was working with? She never made it about her.” Today Lynn works with clients and associates all over the world, including Malaysia, Singapore, and Australia. What Lynn did was learn how to teach others how to be successful in the business. She teamed with Michael Clouse who is an expert in network marketing and author of the book Future Choice: Why Network Marketing May Be Your Best Career Choice. “Lynn keeps everything simple,” Michael said. “She cares for people, teaches them the basic principles of the business, and helps them find their own success.” Those people she helps are stay-at-home moms, working moms, and retirees. All people who are just like her. “The thing we love about Lynn is that she stays true to who she is,” said Garza. “She’s a great mom and she’s built a multi-million dollar business, which she’s done so she can spend more time with her family.” And although she’s worked hard at it, she’s had the benefit of technology on her side to help make it easier than ever. In fact, technology has helped transform the network marketing industry. Isagenix is a combination of membership and online ordering. Clients are able to order the products themselves online and have them delivered directly to their doorstep. Social media has enabled associates to connect with clients on a global scale. In 2014, Garza said the company had $725 million in sales and is expected to reach $1 billion in sales this year with only 435,000 active associates. “The company makes it so easy,” Lynn said. “There’s a system in place for everything—a system for prospecting, a system for presenting, and a system for teaching. Even the products themselves are sold in systems, and they’re very compelling.” More than 80% of its members join simply to use the health and wellness products to lose weight and feel better, not to turn it into a business. But Lynn said the business potential and freedom it can afford to people is just as compelling. “You can create a life you don’t have to escape from,” she said. “This business provides a vehicle that enables me to create the life I want. I’m not better than anyone else. My goal is simply to be better today than I was yesterday. Isagenix isn’t my life. It allows me to have one.”

n a day and age where Botox and other aesthetic services are becoming more popular than ever, have you ever considered who is performing the procedures you are having done? Day and weekend courses have been popping up around the country to provide training to anyone willing to pay to attend these courses. It has become increasingly more prevalent for dentists, family practice physicians and even pharmacists to attend one of these “crash” courses to perform aesthetic services. So the question a consumer should ask themselves is what is most important when seeking aesthetic treatments? Is it more important to get the lowest price for the product and service or to get the person with the most experience? We consulted Denise Pollard, APRN who has over 8 years of aesthetic experience in Botox, Derma-fillers, and laser treatments about what consumers should be looking for when choosing a provider for aesthetic treatments. Before making a decision, here are some things to consider when choosing aesthetic services.

Everybody offers botox. Who should you trust? It’s very important to research the person doing your injections. Botox isn’t something to take lightly. Choosing someone with extensive experience with aesthetic injections is a must. In a time when Botox is being performed by those in the medical field, regardless of their area of expertise, consumer should be careful where the training is coming from.

S

Make sure to do your homework. Do a bit of research. Look up and read about injection techniques and “off-label” techniques so you know what your injector is up to and what to ask for. Talk to people and check out the provider before you go. If you had a bad experience chances are you went to the wrong provider. There is a very big difference from one aesthetic provider to the next. We wouldn’t go to a cardiac surgeon that has only been performing heart surgeries for the past 3 months would we? Also, don’t judge by price alone, sometimes what sounds like a great deal is too good to be true. If a business is more concerned with monthly specials and daily deals, chances are they are more concerned with selling you their minimums than making sure you are happy with your results.

S

Set realistic expectations. It is important that the expert you select is able to spend the necessary time with you to educate you on the product. This education should include risks and side effects that can be involved with aesthetic treatments. The provider should be able to answer any question you ask regarding the product and the procedure you are considering. One important thing to keep in mind is that if you are expecting a drastic result from a minor procedure, are your expectations realistic? It is extremely important that your injector be able to discuss realistic expectations and results you should expect from the procedure you are having performed. The informed patient is the happy patient!

elping retirees comes naturally for Ron Stortz. The Omaha native grew up only a few miles from his grandparents, who lived on a farm north of town, and who influenced his strong work ethic. For the last 12 years of his grandfather’s life, Ron and his wife Brandy brought him into their home to care for him. Ron also witnessed his grandparents’ financial challenges associated with retirement, which prompted him to become a financial advisor after earning his degree from the University of Nebraska at Lincoln.

OUR business

Emily Dorsett, Administrative Assistant, and Sasha Opal, Office Manager

In 2001 he formed Stortz Financial Group, where he provides wealth management, financial planning, retirement, insurance, and estate planning strategies for those near or in retirement. He believes having a financial plan is necessary for everyone. “My philosophy is to coach my clients,” Ron said. “I give them the information and the tools to make decisions that are right for them.” His coaching instinct comes from years of having coached youth sports, primarily little league girls’ fast pitch softball. And with four daughters of his own, he now coaches their sports teams. Just like in sports, Ron helps people set goals and then teaches them what they 36 |

need to know to achieve those goals. Because everyone’s financial goals are different, Ron spends an initial meeting just getting to know the client and doesn’t discuss investments until later. “I want to understand their needs and wants and then build a plan suited specifically to them,” he said. That kind of personalized attention takes extra time. Even though Ron works 60-70 hours a week, he said he wouldn’t do it any differently. “The best part of this job is the relationships,” he said. “I love hearing about my clients’ grandkids, vacations, and what’s important to them. That’s the rewarding part.” And his self-proclaimed stubbornness

also helps propel him to work harder for his clients because he likes seeing them reach their goals. Achieving a balance is key in all aspects of life, whether with finances or family. Ron takes great pride in helping his clients achieve that, as well as for himself. His long work weeks include evening events and presentations for clients and prospective clients, but he still makes sure to spend a few evenings a week at home with his family, who gives him a strong support system. “Family is the most important thing to Ron,” said Brandy. “That’s why he treats his staff and his clients all like family.” That family environment is evident at

Stortz Financial. Office Manager Sasha Opal has been working with Ron for more than 16 years and drives an hour each way every day to and from Emerson, Iowa. “Not many people can say they love their job and love their boss, but I can say that about both,” she said. Sasha and Ron worked together early in their careers when he took her under his wing and mentored her. When he asked her to join his new company, she didn’t hesitate. “You can get financial products anywhere, but you can’t get the kind of personal attention and relationship he provides anywhere else,” she said. “He’s confident, sincere, and one of the most generous people I know.” That kind of trust in each other works both ways. “I have a great team and everyone has an important role,” Ron said. When all those roles come together, working for the benefit of each individual client, then everyone shares in each other’s successes. “I’m all about doing wealth management the right way,” he added. “I want to help anyone I can, whenever I can.”

wo and a half years ago chef Caleb Summers and Jason Fechter listed an ad on Craigslist to provide prepared meal service. Their first customer requested Paleo-friendly food—free of wheat, grain, dairy, and processed sugar—which they cooked in their apartment kitchen. Today, they are the owners of Evolve Paleo Chef, which has more than 100 employees, including six full-time chefs in an 8,000 sq. ft. kitchen, store fronts in four cities, and prepares more than 10,000 meals per week.

How does a two person operation grow so quickly? According to Caleb, it’s because people love their food. “I’m a classically trained chef who loves French cuisine full of richness, depth, and flavor,” he said. “I like cooking meals that take time to make with stock reductions and melting onion and garlic. We make everything from scratch and do it the way any chef would if they owned their own restaurant. It’s cooking like your grandmother did, but most people don’t have time to do it anymore.” The company is headquartered in Kansas City, MO, where the chefs share an office and have weekly meetings to plan the menus, discuss ideas, and share recipes. “A lot of the recipes are influenced by our backgrounds and childhoods,” Caleb said. The lemon pepper chicken was the first dish he made as a child, so he found a way to make it Paleo-friendly, which is the approach they take with all their menu items. “We don’t take a Paleo entrée and try to make it taste good,” he said. “We start with a delicious recipe and make it Paleo-friendly.” For example, they took a traditional chocolate molten lava cake, often served in fine restaurants and made with chocolate, flour, and refined sugar, and instead made it with high quality dark chocolate, almond flour, and coconut sugar. “We test all of our items, and sometimes it takes four to six tries before we have something that tastes good and we like it,” Caleb said. “We want our food to be

delicious. Items include three breakfast choices, two soups, two salads, eight entrees that are beef, pork, chicken, or seafood, two desserts, and a number of dry food pantry items and snacks such as the popular granola-like Paleo balls that are available anytime at their store fronts, the newest of which is located on 180th & Q Streets in Omaha. Grab ‘n Go items are available at the store, which are similar to “adult lunchables” as Caleb called them. They are heavy snacks, or light meals, that include a chicken breast or other protein, vegetables with dipping sauce, and trail mix. All are available for $5. The Omaha store also does all of its own cold-pressed juicing, which is available every day. Caleb said they try to price all of their items moderately, but feels the delicious food and convenience are worth it.

“I think we’re a great value,” he said. “You don’t have to worry about what to cook for dinner, standing in long lines at the grocery store, or cleaning your kitchen. Instead, you can spend that time with your family, at the gym, or doing other things you enjoy.” The health benefits are also a plus. Caleb said they can’t guarantee weight loss, but many people do experience it on a Paleo diet. Above all, Evolve Paleo Chef wants people to just try their food. First time customers are given a complimentary entrée, and returning customers are able to make special requests with any item. For example, if somebody doesn’t want bacon, they can simply indicate that with their order. “Our best advertising is for you to try it,” Caleb said. “We think you’ll love it. And whether you’re doing it for the Paleo aspect or not, it’s healthy, delicious food.”

ou know what a football looks like. But do you know how it feels? Or, more accurately, how it’s supposed to feel? Why quarterbacks monitor the ball’s weight, elasticity and texture with such zeal that in January the league’s most famous QB caused an uproar that nearly overshadowed the sport’s biggest game?

That’s why Sage Rosenfels is on your TV this night just days before the Super Bowl, appearing on MSNBC’s “The Ed Show,” a talking-head forum normally reserved for the topic of the day inside the Beltway. But like politics, football in America inches close to religion. And Tom Brady, the patron saint of New England football, stood accused of a minor heresy after footballs the Patriots’ quarterback used in a playoff game were found under-inflated below a limit allowed by NFL rules. It blew up into a scandal called “Deflategate.” Were the balls intentionally under-inflated so they would be easier to throw in the New England cold? Why would you risk being labeled “a cheater” over a few ounces of air pressure? Rosenfels is telling you that a quarterback isn’t crazy. Temperature, malleability, air pressure, these aren’t quibbles. They’re important. The details matter. Because if a ball feels wrong in the hand, it means a pass could be off by a matter of inches. These inches are the difference between wins and losses. And wins and losses in professional football are everything. A 10-year-career as an NFL quarterback gives Rosenfels a unique perspective, and as he transitions to life after football, his future job prospects hinge on him making you understand why the details matter. “I think quarterbacks do have the most insight of any of the players that played football,” Rosenfels said. “We have to understand every position on offense and every position on defense. We have close relationships with coaches, with offensive coordinators, and general managers to understand the structure of teams and see things from every angle.” Rosenfels learned those angles as a quarterback with five NFL teams. as a back-up behind Super Bowl winning signal-callers Brett Favre and Eli Manning, he appeared in 45 games and threw 30 touchdown passes before retiring in 2012. “I was really lucky to play as long as I did,” Rosenfels says by phone from his home in Omaha. “I did move around a lot from team to team and that was challenging, but being able to live in that world is something I’ll always cherish. Most of my memories about my playing career don’t have to do with games, but with memories with my teammates.” And now that his playing days are over, Rosenfels again is fighting for his spot in the game. The former Iowa State quarterback is working his connections to get a foot in the door as a broadcaster so he can put his vision of the game to use. Last summer, Rosenfels was one of several former players to be invited to a “broadcasting bootcamp,” put on by the NFL Network. He did a simulated game broadcast with NBC’s Kenny Albert and served as a studio host alongside Fox NFL Sunday host Curt Menefee. It was part training and part job interview. After the end of the boot camp, he got a chance with the NFL Network to serve as a training camp analyst, breaking down strengths and weaknesses of teams before the start of the season. Rosenfels found more opportunities last fall when he did between four and six interviews per week on radio stations in Minnesota giving his views on the Vikings. He was a color analyst for Iowa State’s game against Texas and is searching for some more television opportunities that would give him a balance between being on the road and family life.

Rosenfels moved to Omaha after his playing career ended to be near his three children, ages 13, 10, and five. It’s clear that while he eventually wants more work behind a microphone, at the moment he considers being Dad his primary job. “Right now, it’s whatever fits easiest with my kids’ schedule,”

Rosenfels said. “It’s nice that I don’t have to go off and work a full-time job and can give them extra attention and extra love. Right now, it’s whatever I can get into that works around their schedule.” The rewards of a decade-long NFL career mean he can afford to be patient

and seek out the right opportunities. But Sage Rosenfels is again brushing up on his skills and fighting for his spot in a competitive market. Waiting to parlay his unique experience into a chance to make fans better understand the pieces that make up our nation’s most popular game, and why the details matter.

PROTECTOR Austin John Obermeyer | Age 18 | Gretna High School While many athletes recall their earliest childhood sports successes, Austin Obermeyer prefers to be honest while sharing his soccer story when he was just four years old. “Actually that’s when I scored my very first goal; unfortunately it was for the OTHER team, which really didn’t matter because everyone cheered for me anyway.” Growing up, Obermeyer played every sport he could, including football, baseball, wrestling, and basketball, but soccer was his first, and has ultimately been where he’s achieved the level of success he has at Gretna High School, as their starting Goalkeeper the last two years. As a sophomore, Obermeyer recorded 1095 minutes, while maintaining a .8 goals against average, with 55 saves and 5 shutouts. Last year his minutes bumped to 1446, while lowering his GAA to .775, making 77 saves and finishing with 8 shutouts. His play didn’t go unnoticed, as he was named All-District and All-Conference in both his Sophomore and Junior seasons, while being named 2nd and 1st team All-State in consecutive years. “Stats are obviously important to a goalkeeper, but even the best goalkeeper will get scored on without a good defense. I have been fortunate to have the best defense in the state in front of me,” credits Obermeyer. When not playing club soccer for 402 Evolution, or for the Dragons, Obermeyer stays active playing basketball and volleyball on the intramural teams at school, is a member of G-Club, enjoys reading, writing, and of course loves to play the occasional video game with friends. With his family, Obermeyer enjoys volunteering at Sienna Frances-House feeding the homeless and is very involved with the Saint Patricks’s Youth Group, which provides many opportunities to serve the community. Obermeyer has elected to continue his playing career at Bellevue University upon graduating this spring, and of course after potentially bringing Gretna a State Championship. Austin is the son of Mark and Maureen Obermeyer of Gretna. He has an older sister Lindsey, and older brother Logan.

COURT Teresa Kaiser | Age 17 Skutt Catholic High School

High-Level competition is nothing unusual for the Hutnick-Kaiser family. Whether it’s their string of success at Skutt, or their Wednesday night family tennis competitions, the desire to compete has been constant, starting at an early age, competing at the age of 10 in the Missouri Valley team events and tournaments. Teresa Kaiser, the youngest of three girls to attend Skutt Catholic, has been nothing short of spectacular, capturing her first Tennis State Championship in 2014, after runner-up performances in both her freshman and sophomore campaigns. Her impressive 81-5 record over three years as Skutt’s #1 Singles Player has garnered the attention of those in the Nebraska tennis circles, as she was named an All-State First Team Selection each year, as well as All-State Captain in 2014. “Teresa’s encouragement during last season had a huge impact on the success we experienced last year,” said Skutt Tennis Coach Sheryl Vaughn when asked what Kaiser meant to the team. The Kaiser girls have brought team Championships to Skutt Catholic, six out of the last seven years, while Teresa hopes to make it four straight as she finishes out her high school career in 2015. In addition to tennis, Kaiser is also an accomplished golfer for Skutt, where she was the school’s number one golfer in 2013 and 2014, named an All-State Selection her sophomore, Junior, and senior seasons. Her consistent play helped propel her team to a Runner-Up finish at State in 2014, after capturing an individual Championship at Districts. Kaiser is also a champion in the classroom, where she carries a 3.9GPA, and is a member of National Honor Society, National Art Honor Society, Prevention Council, FBLA, and in on the Speech Team. Teresa is the daughter of John Kaiser and Felicia Hutnick. Her oldest sister Alexis attends Clemson University, while her sister Stephanie attends the University of Miami (FL).
