finally arrived in Omaha, bringing with it more daylight hours, outdoor sports practices, and opportunities for families to enjoy time together in the nicer weather. Family is central to our lives, and this month we recognize those who work tirelessly to help families in a variety of ways. These include helping to improve where they live, helping during their times of need, and helping to make their lives healthier. Third generation painter Kevin Clanton is helping families enjoy their homes longer. He has developed a cost-effective solution to updating cabinetry and woodwork in homes that has earned the trust of homeowners, designers, and realtors throughout Omaha. For those looking to build a new home, Kavan Homes is a smaller builder that provides custom plans with a timeless style and personal, hands-on approach. Families are at the center of pediatric dental practice Pedodontics, P.C. Not only do they provide both dental and orthodontics for children from infancy to adulthood, they do so in an environment that puts kids’ comfort first. Combined with a focus on education for both patients and parents, the entire staff treats each other and everyone who comes to the practice like family.

Nothing is more important than family during times of need. The local non-profit organization, Heart Heroes, makes its mission to help families with children affected by Congenital Heart Defects. Through its superhero cape program, annual superhero run, and funding research, Heart Heroes has made a difference not just in Omaha, but across the country and around the world. For a great evening out, take your family to the newly remodeled Blue Sushi Sake Grill in Grayhawk Pointe, and be sure to check out their new patio. We want to thank these and all of the local businesses and organizations in our community for their efforts in helping make this a great place for our families to live. home is one of the largest investments you can make, so it should stand the test of time. Not just from a structural perspective, but from a style perspective as well. It also needs to meet the long-term needs of its owners, which is different for everyone. Omaha builder Kevin Kavan strives to ensure the custom homes he builds for his clients exceeds all those expectations.

Kavan Homes offers custom plans and timeless styles

Kevin’s talent for designing homes began while growing up in Millard. He enjoyed working with his hands and learned a lot from his dad about working hard and taking time to do the job right. In the early years when he knew he wanted to build, he first learned the trades, from electrical and tile work to framing the entire home. All of which he did when he built his first spec home in West Omaha in 2003. His first custom home came shortly thereafter when the housing market was slower. But because he was on his own, Kevin was able to keep his overhead

very low. Even today he doesn’t have additional employees, which he said he prefers so he can be hands-on with every project. “People appreciate working with me because I’m personally involved in every step, which eliminates a lot of miscommunication that can happen with larger builders,” he said. He also uses smaller subcontractors, many of whom have been with him from day one. Kavan Homes, Inc., grew organically over time, with Kevin now building 10 to 12 custom homes per year for the last several years, which is right where he wants to be. Most of the homes he builds are ranch style in the $400,000 and up range. “It’s hard to beat a ranch because it will fit any lifestyle,” he said. One ranch style home he built had 3,000 sq. ft. above grade and 15 ft. ceilings. His two-story model, which recently sold, has 20 ft. ceilings in its open concept floor plan and four bedrooms on the second level. An oversized island in the kitchen creates a stunning focal 12 |

point. Kevin said it’s the largest an island can be without having seams in the granite countertop. The kitchen opens to a living room, dining room, and a hearth room with an additional fireplace. “Families like to be around each other but still have space to spread out,” he said. The bedrooms offer plenty of space as well, including walk-in closets, and a fully custom-built master closet with a marble island in the middle that includes an outlet. This can be used for a small refrigerator to keep bottles for an infant—a feature inspired by Kevin’s 10-month-old son, Henry. All materials throughout the house are what Kevin described as “real,” meaning natural stone and tile on the floors, backsplashes, and fireplace surrounds. He also stains all the wood for durability and functionality. “I try to do a mixture of timeless yet up-to-date features,” he said. His wife Ashley helps stage his model homes and select décor that fits this philosophy. One of Kevin’s favorite aspects to homebuilding is drawing each plan. He meets with the client and studies their specific lot to determine the best design that will meet their needs. “If a lot has a great view in a certain direction then I make sure to incorporate extra windows to take advantage of that,” he explained. “I always design the plan to cater to the lot.” Kevin prides himself on that type of attention to detail with his craft. “Similar to a microbrewer who loves the craft of brewing the perfect beer, I love the process of creating a home, from drafting the plans to handing over the keys.” For more information on Kavan Homes, contact Diane Hughes with Berkshire Hathaway Homes Services, diane.huges@bhhsamb.com, 402-218-7489. Pedodontics P.C. gives kids something to smile about

“s

miles are our passion.” That’s the first sentence on the giant word wall in the reception area at the pediatric dental office Pedodontics, P.C. For more than 50 years, Pedodontics, P.C. has been helping keep Omaha families healthy. Although the location and doctors have changed during that time, the values and way they practice have remained the same, and it’s a prescription that kids and parents appreciate.

Dr. Frank Driscoll and Dr. Gary Vogelsberg began the practice in 1964 off 40th & Dewey Streets, later moving to the Indian Hills area off 89th & Dodge. In 1984 Dr. Lisa Strunk joined the practice, and still remains as the “Matriarch” today. Her partners, Dr. Carmen Dana and Dr. Amanda Snyder, were both patients at Pedodontics, P.C. growing up and said their experiences with the practice inspired each to pursue dentistry as a profession. In 1994, Dr. Strunk completed her Masters Degree in Orthodontics, making her the only dual trained specialist in Omaha providing both orthodontic and pediatric dental needs for patients. “It’s a natural progression for patients to move from dental to ortho, and this way they don’t have to leave to go to another office,” Lisa said. “They just have to go to the other side of the room.” That room is a large, open concept that houses multiple brightly-colored exam benches rather than traditional dental chairs. The idea is to make going to the dentist a non-threatening experience for both kids and their parents. “The industry can be scary with its bright lights, loud noises, and people working in your mouth,” Lisa said. The open concept allows kids to see other kids having the same thing done. “Even if a child cries, other patients see us comforting them,” Lisa added. Five years ago, the practice moved into a brand new building across the street from its previous location off 119th Street just north of Center Street. They designed it to have a homey look and feel, including lots of windows, walls made out of knotty Alder pine wood, and primary colors throughout. There’s also plenty to keep kids enter-

tained, such as a play house and a funhouse style mirror they hand-carried to the new location from the previous office across the street. “We want families to be comfortable and kids to feel safe, so we set the tone for life that going to the dentist can be a happy experience,” Lisa said. This includes receiving a balloon, a prize, and a new toothbrush at every visit. Just as important as the experience is the actual dentistry. The doctors and staff at Pedodontics, P.C. place great emphasis on educating patients and their families. “Dentistry should be slowing down, but it’s not,” Carmen said. “With all the healthy choices available, there should be less decay. But 23% of kids ages one to five have cavities.” Sugary drinks and processed foods are the biggest culprits, so teaching kids lifelong habits is critical. The doctors also focus on interceptive orthodontics—techniques to create an environment for teeth to come in healthier. This helps prevents more intrusive and expensive orthodontics. They work together as a team, creating a more comprehensive practice. “I get to learn from two very experienced doctors who are willing to take the time to teach,” Amanda said. Although all three doctors are at different stages of their practices, they share the same vision, which is to keep providing a happy experience for patients from infancy to adulthood. “The beauty of what we do is we get to know the families and care about them all,” Lisa said. “They become part of our lives.” At the end of the day, what’s important can be summed up with another sentence from their word wall: “A smile is the universal welcome.” APRIL 2016

or more than a decade, Blue Sushi Sake Grill has been a West Omaha favorite. Over the years, the brand has expanded to include locations in Legacy, the Old Market downtown, the Haymarket in Lincoln, and now includes locations in Texas, Kansas, Colorado, and soon Illinois. With so much growth, Flagship Restaurant Group, which owns Blue, decided it was time to update its original location at Grayhawk Pointe off 144th between Blondo & Maple Streets.

This past January, the restaurant moved into the space next door to the former Red Lounge location and added a Sake Bombers Lounge, which is consistent with the concept at all its other locations. The move enabled Blue to have much needed additional space, including a sushi bar that can now seat 18 rather than just 10 as it did previously. There are more windows for natural light, and a unique combination between the two sides of the restaurant. The Sake Bombers side includes a brick wall and warmer tones for a more intimate setting. Whereas the Blue Sushi

side is wide open with modern décor such as the beautiful origami that hangs above the middle of the dining room. General Manager Megan Simpson, who has been working at the original location since 2004, said she’s so excited to have the new location and all the space it offers. “Everything about the restaurant provides more room,” she said. “Even our sushi chefs are happy to have everything up-to-date and so much more space for them to work.” Although the new location has a completely updated look and feel, the restaurant’s menu continues to carry

customer favorites, which holds true across all its locations. The two most popular sushi items are still the Crunchy Blue and Crunch L.A. rolls. However, Blue does have new offerings on its happy hour menu. The Itchy Salmon is a specialty nigiri dish that is baked salmon with spicy crab served warm with cilantro and ponzu sauce. The Cherry Bomb is another nigiri dish made with tuna, Serrano, rice tempuram, ponzu sauce, and a dab of sriracha. It’s made with Titos vodka, Barrow’s Intense Ginger Liqueur, fresh lime juice, crushed mint leaves, and fizz served with a sugar rim. Blue’s most popular signature cocktail is the Bluetini, which is a blueberry infused vodka made in-house, raspberry liqueur, simple syrup, and fresh lime juice. “We use juices that we squeeze fresh daily in all of our drinks,” Simpson added. Blue offers happy hour Monday through Saturday from 3:00-6:30pm, all day Sunday from noon-8:00pm, and a reverse happy hour on Friday and Saturday nights from 10:30pm-Midnight. The restaurant is also known for its lunch special offered Monday-Friday from 11:00am-2:00pm. It includes a choice of miso soup or house salad and a selection of two sushi rolls from the lunch menu, all starting at $11.00. And beginning in mid to late April, lunch, happy hour, and dinner can all be enjoyed outside on the new patio, which has been widened from what Red Lounge used to have. Simpson said since the new location opened, it’s been very rewarding to see customers’ reactions to the new space. The “write” plan a column on estate and financial planning for everyone By LISA M. LEHAN, J.D.

You’ve worked hard to get here. You’ve made a conscious effort to save for retirement, start college savings funds for your children, and stick to your financial plan. But does your financial plan include your post-death intentions or does it fall short? Many people ask me if it is necessary to visit a lawyer to document their desire for asset transfers at their death; doesn’t the law state that my assets will go to my spouse and kids?

What does Nebraska law really say? Most people are surprised to learn that Nebraska’s intestacy laws, which apply when a resident dies without a will, dictate who gets what. For a married person with no children, Nebraska law says $100,000 plus one-half of your remaining assets go to your spouse, and the balance of your assets go to your parents. For a married person with children, Nebraska law says $100,000 plus one-half of your remaining assets go to your spouse, and the balance of your assets go to your children equally. If these state laws surprise you, you are not alone. Nebraska’s laws for the distribution of your assets if you die without a will usually raise some concerns. Many couples want all or a majority of their assets to support their surviving spouse for the remainder of his or her lifetime. Also, many parents are not comfortable with their children receiving an outright inheritance, depending upon their age and financial maturity. Would receipt of nearly one-half of your estate dissuade your children from pursuing a college education or a career? Would they delay school or work in favor of spending your hard-earned money on

cars, vacations, or perhaps even more frivolous items? If the state laws do not reflect the plan you want for your family’s financial protection, don’t let the State of Nebraska dictate these things for you. Instead, visit an attorney to help you prepare and execute an estate plan that fulfills your intentions. Whether your estate is small or large, it is your estate, and it should be distributed in accordance with your wishes. omeowners are living in their houses longer before moving. Often this results in the desire to upgrade outdated styles, especially with kitchens. The once popular golden oak cabinets that dominated new construction homes during the 90s are being replaced with white cabinetry. The high price of lumber can make replacing cabinets cost-prohibitive. But there is an affordable solution that many homeowners are turning to so they can achieve a brand new look.

Kevin Clanton is a third generation painter in Elkhorn. His grandfather began his family’s painting business when the city only had 2,500 residents. When Kevin’s father, Scott Clanton, graduated from Elkhorn High School, he joined the family business. Kevin grew up helping his father, which instilled in him a hard work ethic.. He was also an athlete and enjoyed the physical nature painting offered. His mother, Jayne, taught him finances and money management. The combination led him to earning a business degree from UNO. In 2006 he formed Kevin Clanton Painting, focusing at first on new home construction projects. He quickly learned that when the new construction market underwent a down turn, his business did too. However, his father still maintained all of his previous client relationships, taking even the smallest projects, such as painting a single room. Together they worked on projects for current homeowners. “Through the years we had requests to paint woodwork,” Kevin said. “We got very good at it and became woodwork specialists. Any painter can paint a home’s exterior. But the skill level to be a good woodwork painter is different.” Kevin said having their own shop really sets them apart. Rather than spray cabinet doors and drawers in a homeowner’s basement or garage, he takes them to his shop in Elkhorn where he has a state-of-the-art spray booth. It keeps paint odor, sanding dust, and time out of the house for the client to a minimum. “The key to any paint job is intense prep work,” Kevin explained. Taping, confining dust, and caulking are all meticulous but necessary steps. “The better the prep work, the better the end result,” he added. Using the correct products is also important. Kevin has perfected his method of sanding and spraying, using certain

primer and finish coats that are flawless. “Since we spray rather than brush on the paint, you don’t see the original wood grain or brush strokes,” he said. “It’s a durable, perfect finish.” An average kitchen takes up to three days in the home, followed by a few days at the spray booth, and then one day back at the home to re-hang the finished doors. Not only does Kevin transform cabinets, he also does windows, trim, and stair rails. He said the most rewarding part of his business is when homeowners walk in after they are finished and they get the “wow” factor. “Our clients are so happy the first thing they want to do is show their friends and family,” Kevin said. “The continuous referrals that come in from our projects are so exciting and motivating.” Kevin’s crew includes himself, his father, and two seasoned painters, Gary Swanson and Jimmy Bender. Kevin personally oversees every project and manages all cost, which keeps them affordable. His wife, Andrea, is the company’s full-time bookkeeper while also raising their two children, Canon (2) and Katy (4). His sense of perfection carries through to every aspect of his business. “We are the guys who arrive on time, have our shirts tucked in, don’t smoke, and are trustworthy,” he said. “Many of our clients trust us to go on vacation while we’re working in their home, and we don’t take that lightly.” Referrals also come from interior designers and realtors. Simply by changing the color of woodwork in a home, Kevin said sellers can immediately increase the purchase price. “There’s a lot of confidence in our ability to transform the home and do it professionally,” he said. Although woodwork is their niche, they will gladly do traditional exterior and interior painting projects, as well as refinish furniture such as tables, chairs, or curio cabinets. Kevin emphasized that they are the painter to turn to for projects that are affordable, without hassle, have a highend, quality finish, and are done right. “Our emphasis is to create a very modern looking home on an affordable budget,” he said. “Homeowners love their floor plans, especially their kitchens, they just want them updated.” Kevin also said they get feedback from homeowners that they’re a fun crew. “We love to listen to music, and our clients like that about us,” he said. “And don’t be surprised if you hear me and Jimmy singing along to Frank Sinatra or the Back Street boys while we work.”

Heart Heroes empowers kids battling Congenital Heart Defects

ine-year-old Sam Burton is a superhero. He even has the cape to prove it. Born with half a heart and several severe heart defects, he has undergone three surgeries, suffered from congestive heart failure at age five, and has an artificial pulmonary valve. His mother, Kitty Burton, remembers when he couldn’t walk across a basketball court. Today he can run the length of a football field. Sam’s journey led Kitty and other local parents to form Heart Heroes, an organization that supports families affected by Congenital Heart Defects through its superhero capes and other programs.

In 2009 Kitty and a group of other heart moms met for coffee. She said she wanted to get Sam a super hero cape before his next heart surgery. The other moms thought it was a great idea and that they should get all of their kids capes. They drew a picture on a napkin of what the capes should look like and how to incorporate hearts onto it. “We came up with the name ‘Heart Heroes,’” Kitty said. “Sam’s was green, and we still have it.” Other parents saw kids wearing the capes and wanted them for their own children. Kitty gave the napkin to a graphic designer, who developed the Heart Hero badge, which is placed over the heart of every cape that’s sent out. She also researched cape manufacturers and inquired about buying capes in bulk. She got a great response and started raising money to purchase the capes. “An official Heart Hero cape has that badge of honor on it,” she said. Although the cape manufacturers have changed over the years, that badge is the one element that has stayed consistent. Since then, Heart Heroes has sent out more than 10,000 capes worldwide, each personally designed for the Heart Hero being honored. On average, they receive 100 cape requests per month through their web site. Capes are ordered for kids of all ages. “Parents often order capes knowing their baby will have a heart defect and use the cape as a blanket,” Kitty said. “The capes make the kids feel like they have the strength to get through their journey. Some parents can’t get their kids to take the cape off.” Kitty said Sam’s cape is still hanging on the wall of his bedroom. “He loves showing it to people and is proud of it as a sign of bravery for all he’s been through.” According to The Children’s Heart Foundation, nearly one of every 100 babies born has CHD, which are the leading cause of infant deaths in the U.S. “Most people don’t realize that congenital heart defects are the most common birth defects in the world,” she added. Because there is currently no known prevention or cure for CHD,

a big part of Heart Heroes is to offer hope and funding for CHD research. This fall will mark the organization’s fourth annual Superhero Heart Run, a free event for families and friends of those who battle CHD. The run now takes place in six cities, with more added every year, and participants wear their super hero capes to show their support. “It’s a great way for the community to come together, help fundraise, and keep our programs going,” Kitty said. The entire Heart Heroes organization is operated by Kitty and her co-founder Sondra Dubas, National Program Director Margaret Keller, and Marketing Director Kristi Unick. But Kitty emphasized they wouldn’t be where they are today if it wasn’t for community support. “So many people have such big hearts,” she said. “We wouldn’t be Heart Heroes if it weren’t for the parents who are advocates for the kids. We’ve all done this together. It’s not one or two people; it’s every single person who gives to make it what it is.”
