It’s hard
DANIEL MULLER
to believe how quickly the summer has flown by, and school starts in just a few short weeks. Hopefully everyone took some time to relax, get in a few vacation days, and enjoy all the great summer activities Omaha has to offer. As we make the move into fall and back-to-school, it’s a good time to think about trying something new, maybe even something you’ve always wanted to do but never felt you had the time. This month we feature people and places that have something for everyone in the family.

Many people don’t realize that we have a sports celebrity right here in West Omaha. James Sieckmann, who runs the golf academy at Shadow Ridge Country Club, has worked with more than 80 PGA and LPGA professionals, is a seven-time PGA Teacher of the Year, and one of Golf Magazine’s Top 100 Teachers in America. He recently published his second book, Your Short Game Solution, and teaches businessmen and current tour pros from around the world. But he also still makes time to lead the Junior Golf Program every summer at Shadow Ridge and teach club members. Something to keep in mind if you want to brush up on your golf game. If you’re looking for a new activity to try with your kids, check out Tiger Rock Academy, which offers classes in Taekwondo for all ages. Not only does it provide a great workout, but it also helps build strength, self-confidence, focus, and discipline, which is especially beneficial
for kids. Michael and Sandy Baluch will make everyone feel welcome, and classes are ongoing and you can join at any time. We all try to have a healthier lifestyle, and if you’re looking for a more natural way to recover from exercise related injuries, surgery, or treat chronic inflammation, Ice Out Cryo Spa has Omaha’s first cryochamber. Owners Erin and Ryan Krause have made this technology available to the public, and it’s quickly become a preferred form of therapy to treat a number of conditions. Even if you don’t have any ailments, try it out for a refreshing, energized, feeling. Finally, be sure to stop by an old favorite in town—Jams American Grill— which recently remodeled its 78th & Dodge location. And visit the new Jams restaurant in the Old Market, because now is a great time to try something new. Jack Shotbolt Editor in Chief

hen buying a home, most people know the right one as soon as they walk in the door. That was certainly the case for Robin and Scott Cremers. As soon as they toured the 2014 Street of Dreams house in the South Hamptons neighborhood in Gretna, they knew it felt like home. Six months later they purchased the 4,400 sq. ft., two-story home and moved in with their two children.

The Cremers had previously been living in a ranch-style home and said they wanted everyone to have their bedrooms on the same floor, rather than putting the kids in basement bedrooms. Instead, the finished walk-out basement serves as guest quarters when family visits from out of town, as well as a gathering place for the kids’ friends or to watch movies as a family in the home theater. It’s also built for entertaining, with a full wet bar that features a brick wall that was reclaimed from a building in the Old Market downtown, giving the basement extra character.

CUSTOM LIGHTING
As soon as they walked into the home, the Cremers said they liked the modern craftsman style, which was built by Homestead Custom Builders, LLC. Much of the furnishings and décor also appealed to them, so when they purchased the home, they worked with Lee Douglas Interiors to keep much of the same look. The white and grey neutral colors throughout the home were easy for the Cremers to work with. And the only changes they made were to the master bathroom floor tile and having a custom closet system installed. The home features an open floor plan with tall doorways and a 20 ft. ceiling in the great room. A large formal dining room is adjacent to the kitchen—something that many builders have gone away
from. “We’ve lived in a lot of homes, most without dining rooms, and it’s nice to have one again,” Scott said. “We use it all the time, especially for dinner parties.” Robin said they love to entertain, and the layout of the house lends itself well to that. They also like the fact that the home feels cozy, yet everyone is able to have their own space, both inside and out. The large backyard includes a covered patio and two covered decks—one off the kitchen and another off the master bedroom—that overlook the wooded area behind the house. “The quiet surroundings is my favorite part of the house,” Scott said. “This area is its own little community, and the neighbors are incredible. block we don’t know.” The South Hamptons are part of Gretna Schools, and most of the homes on the street are two-story, making the area ideal for families. All five bedrooms in the Cremers’ home have large walk-in closets and Robin said there’s more than enough storage throughout the house. An oversized mud room serves as the perfect drop zone off the extra-deep, three-car garage. The office at the front of the house includes built-in shelves, and the dining includes a built-in buffet. “The home was very well-built and felt move-in ready when we first saw it,” Robin said. Although the Cremers have loved the home, they made the difficult decision recently to put it on the market as they look to relocate for both work and family reasons. But they are confident that given the style of the house, the serene setting, and the neighborhood, the right family will enjoy it as much as they have. “We’ve built and lived in half a dozen homes over the years,” Scott said, “and this one feels like home more than any other.” For more information on this home, contact Teresa Elliott with Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices at 402-496-9354

Tiger Rock has operated in Omaha for 13 years under the leadership of Jeff Dousharm who also owns two academies in Lincoln. It’s part of a network of more than 200 locations across the country, which all incorporate the same curriculum and principles of traditional TaeKwanDo. It centers around unarmed self-defense based on a 15-step program that begins with choosing to participate and ending with personal transformation upon earning a black belt. Michael and Sandy Baluch manage the Omaha location and teach most of the classes. Michael started his Tiger Rock journey in South Carolina 22 years ago after enrolling his son in classes so they could learn together. Sandy, who was a competitive alpine skier and a Junior Olympics gold medal winner, also started classes after watching her kids’ progress in TaeKwanDo over the years. “The more I watched, the more I saw how much it helped everything else they were doing,” she said. In fact, now that her daughter plays softball for Creighton University, much of what she learned at Tiger Rock translates onto the

softball field. “Various coaches have said my daughter has amazing body control and footwork, and it’s partly from the martial arts,” Sandy added. Tiger Rock offers classes for all ages, starting as young as age three and divided by age group and rank through age 11. Youth students, age 12 to15, and Adults, ages 16 and older all train together, regardless of rank. Multiple classes are offered for each group throughout the week, and with a membership, students can attend as many classes as they want, with two times per week recommended. Testing occurs every eight to nine weeks, which follows a national schedule. Because the curriculum is the same across academies, a student could test at any location across the country. A typical class includes practicing forms, contact skills such as kicks or hand techniques, sparring for higher ranks, and breaking boards. There are options to learn elite counter aggression skills, which is defending against the type of attack one might encounter on the streets. They also offer women’s self-defense classes. But even if that’s not your primary reason for joining, every class results in a good workout performed at an individual’s skill level.
“What we teach is not age specific,” Michael said. “We teach a healthy and sustainable lifestyle, and you don’t have to be an athlete to do it.” Jeffrey Hill started classes four years ago and said he lost 15 pounds in the first six months. He joined after seeing the benefits of having his kids take classes. “Developing focus is a big part of TaeKwanDo, and I’ve noticed my daughter focusing more on the game and on her coach when she plays soccer,” he said. He also enrolled his step-son at age 16 after being a victim of bullying. “It taught him not to be a target and how to look someone in the eye to show them he’s not weak,” he said. James Jones and his two sons, ages four and five, are also students and all attend classes twice a week. “I was looking for a new form of exercise and have gained a lot of strength and flexibility,” he said. “It also teaches my kids responsibility, the value of working hard, and not quitting. Mr. Baluch is a wonderful mentor for all of us, and my family really enjoys it.” And although that first class might generate a few nerves, by the end it will give you a great sense of accomplishment. Hill added, “Every time my daughter is done with a class, she’s got a big smile on her face.”

Ice Out Cryo Spa brings a new healing therapy to Omaha
w
henever you pull a muscle exercising or have inflammation from an injury or other health-related issue, applying ice is a proven method for relief. That same principle is at the heart of Ice Out Cryo Spa in Lakeside Plaza, which uses liquid nitrogen to cool a full-body Cryochamber. Within minutes, it cools the skin’s surface temperature with lasting results that benefit the body in a number of ways.

Cryotherapy is not new. It was invented in 1978 and has been used regularly in Europe for years. It was introduced to the U.S. in larger cities about 10 years ago at medical centers, and has been available to the general public just in the last few years. Ice Out owners Erin and Ryan Krause have had such good experiences with cryotherapy, they decided to bring the first Cryochamber to Omaha. Ryan, who is a former NFL player, said he used cold therapy throughout his football career. It would help with his recovery following a game, and now uses the Cryochamber for both pre and post workouts. Erin suffered from plaque psoriasis, an itchy and often painful skin condition, and had to take an immune suppressing medication to treat it. When visiting friends in Los Angeles several years ago, they recommended she try a Cryo Spa. After a number of sessions, her condition began to clear up, and today she’s no longer on the medication. “I fell in love with the treatment, and since it wasn’t available in the Midwest at the time, we decided to bring it to Omaha,” Erin said. In fact, many of her
family members travel to Omaha for the therapy, including her father who suffers from fibro myalgia and neuropathy in his feet. “It’s a natural, holistic, healthy therapy that doesn’t involve putting medications into your body,” she added. According to research, Cryotherapy comes with a number of benefits, including helping most causes of inflammation. It’s also been show to help improve depression and anxiety, speeds up recovery from sports injury or surgery by 50%, and burns up to 800 calories per session. The localized cryo spa, which uses a wand to direct liquid nitrogen over the face and scalp, helps improve collagen production to reduce wrinkles and can stimulate hair growth on the head. During a session in the Cryochamber, clients wear their own undergarments and are provided with wool gloves, knee-high socks, and slippers. They simply stand in the chamber, which covers the body to about shoulder-height. The technician remains in the room, controlling the temperature, which ranges from -200 to -240 degrees Fahrenheit, with the skin’s surface
temperature lowering by 30-50 degrees Fahrenheit over a three minute period. The skin reacts to the cold, which is most noticeable on the backs of the legs and arms, and sends messages to the brain that acts as a stimulant. It also triggers the release of anti-inflammatory endorphins, leaving you with a refreshed, energized feeling. Ice Out technician manager Zac Smith said many people tend to be nervous when they first try it, but most say it’s easier than taking a cold shower. “We stay in the room with you and if you need to pause for a minute, we can do that. We cater to each individual’s needs.” Since opening in February, Ryan said they’ve had more than 800 people try it, many of whom return because of the benefits. They recommend two or three session per week initially, depending on the level of inflammation, and regularly see up to 25 clients per day. “It’s been really well received,” Erin said. “I think it’s because so many people want a healthier lifestyle, and this form of therapy is completely natural with no side effects. The more natural you can be, the healthier you can be.” AUGUST 2016

The “write” plan a column on estate and financial planning for everyone By LISA M. LEHAN, J.D.
I recently spoke with a client who is taking care of her aging father. Complications following hip replacement surgery led to an 18 day hospital stay and two months of rehab for her dad. During that time, she was working full-time, taking care of her family, and also assisting her father with all of his medical and financial matters. Understandably, she described the situation as overwhelming. But she admitted it would have been much more complicated if her father had not named her as his agent under his durable financial power of attorney prior to his surgery.

An agent under a durable financial power of attorney (“POA”) is appointed by you to act on your behalf with regard to your property, business, and financial affairs. Your agent is legally permitted to perform acts that you designate, which may include simple tasks, such as paying bills and depositing checks, or more complicated tasks, such as managing your real estate, investments, or business. If you do not have a POA in force when you become incapacitated, your family will need to ask a judge to establish a conservatorship for you. Court proceedings take extra time, and the reality with these situations is—you need someone to be able to act fast. Court proceedings are also generally more expensive from a cost perspective and are emotionally taxing. Of course, who you name as your agent needs thoughtful consideration. Is the person capable of competently managing your assets? Does the person live close enough to manage your affairs efficiently and vigilantly? If the person is unable or unwilling to fill the role, who will you name as a back-up? Unfortunately, today we deal with diseases that can cause disability before death. We also face the possibility of
short-term disability, perhaps due to injuries sustained in an automobile accident. I’ve also prepared special purpose POAs for a client and his wife when they needed to close on the sale of their home while the wife was going to be out of the country for work. My hope is that you will not need to rely on your POA once executed; however, not having one may force your family to the courthouse and cause delays. Although a POA is straight-forward, its absence can render a difficult situation even more overwhelming for those who are taking care of you and your affairs. The choice of lawyer is important and should not be based solely on advertisements.

sk anyone in Omaha what Jams American Grill is known for, and the answer will most likely be its coconut chicken salad. It’s been a favorite for the past 25 years, and it’s just as delicious today. With a newly remodeled interior at its 78th & Dodge Street location, and a second restaurant in the Old Market, Jams continues to offer the same quality dishes mixed with contemporary flare. The man behind Jams’ delicious dishes is Senior Executive Chef and Partner Jeff Newman. He started at Jams 20 years ago, has been the head chef for the past 10, and said it’s not common for someone to be with the same restaurant that long. But as both he and General Manager Ross Olsbo agreed, once you get into the industry you find out you have a passion for it. “It’s not easy work or easy hours, but I love the restaurant business,” Olsbo said, who has been in the industry for 27 years and recently joined the Jams team.

“We spent a lot of time working on the ramen because we wanted to get it right.” Olsbo attributes Jams’ longevity to the fact that most of the kitchen staff has been at Jams for many years, ensuring the quality of the food remains the same. “It’s the consistency that people look for,” he said. In addition to the famous coconut chicken salad, which is large strips of fried coconut chicken atop a bed of field greens with artichoke hearts, avocado, tomato, red onions, almonds, croutons, and topped with a creamy herb mustard dressing that’s drizzled in raspberry sauce, other favorites have stood the test of time. These include the meatloaf and Dave’s salad, which is grilled chicken, bacon, tomato, croutons, and walnuts in a balsamic vinaigrette served with apple pear mayonnaise. The menu’s diversity is what makes Jams so popular. “We have something on the menu for everyone,” Olsbo said. Newman tries to stay on top of culinary trends, creating seasonal specials every three months that uses locally sourced produce whenever available. “We’ll incorporate fresh sprouts, tomatoes, and corn when it’s ready,” Newman said. “We always have a salmon, steak, and pasta entrée that’s built around those available ingredients.” He added that when creating new dishes, he’s not trying to change the culinary landscape, he’s just trying to make dishes that are great quality. Some of the newer items that have been included on the menu include shrimp and grits, steak frites, and ramen. “We spent a lot of time working on the ramen because we wanted to get it right,” Newman said. Jams serves healthy portions, which Olsbo said are intended to be full meals so people leave feeling satisfied. “We have a consistent crowd and love everyone who comes here—regular customers and new people trying us for the first time,” he said. The restaurant recently underwent a remodel, and the new look reflects the upscale but laid back nature of Jams. With a proven concept, Cutchall Management Group, which owns Jams,

opened a second location last fall in the Old Market. General Manager Mike Vaske said they have a slightly different crowd downtown that caters to the bar side of the business with more beer and spirit drinkers. “Wine is always a focus with Jams, but we’ve partnered with many of the local breweries to introduce different options,” he said. The menus are similar at both restaurants, with Newman teaching Old Market Chefs Martin Minor and Shawn Phifer how to replicate the dishes. “It’s become a collaborative effort between all three chefs,” Minor said. Due to its larger kitchen at the new location, Jams in the Old Market also offers a weekly pizza special, nachos, and specials such as firecracker shrimp. Vaske said the response to the new location has been great. “We’re excited to be part of downtown where there are lots of great restaurants, and we feel we fit in well,” he said. “Jams has a wonderful tradition in the community, and now that we have two locations, there are even more opportunities for people to try us out.”

Omaha’s golfing guru James Sieckmann revolutionized the short game right from our back yards

hether you’re a weekend golfer or a more serious player, golf is usually won with the short game and is usually the most frustrating aspect. But the man who has become one of the leading golf instructors in the country with his proven method for mastering the short game, lives and works right in West Omaha, teaching his techniques every day to kids, amateurs and tour pros.

James Sieckmann grew up in Omaha in a golfing family. His older brother, Tom Sieckmann, played professional golf for 17 with nine victories, including the 1988 Anheuser-Busch Golf Classic on the PGA Tour. James accompanied his brother on many occasions, gaining inside access to some of the top players at the time, such as Seve Ballesteros and Tom Pernice, Jr. James competed professionally as well for several years, but he wasn’t as successful and decided to coach full-time instead. Although he stopped playing professional golf, James started studying the players who were winning, watching countless hours of video and analyzing their swings. What he discovered was that everything conventional instruction taught was

all wrong. “We’d all been working with bad information, which is frustrating,” James said. After accepting a position from long-time friend Steve Shanahan to be the director of Shadow Ridge Country Club’s golf academy, James began teaching his Finesse Wedge System to members while helping a few pros on tour. Over the years James quietly established a successful career in Omaha. He and his wife of 23 years, Michele, and their two children, made Omaha their permanent home, living in the Shadow Ridge subdivision. He continued to teach his methods, and one day was approached by Dr. Greg Rose of the Titleist Performance Institute to work with tour players Ben Crane, Charley Hoffman, and LGPA pro I.K. Kim. As a result of working together, the institute’s motion-capture technology verified that James’ methods were, in fact, a better technique. Teaching his method became second nature as James worked with more than 80 PGA and LGPA Tour players. He said some of the highlights include Nick Watney, who won four times in the two years James worked with him; Duffy Waldorf, who also won under James tutelage; and he gave a lesson to Arnold Palmer that “went awesome.” But he
never considered putting his teachings into book form until Golf Magazine wrote an article about it in 2013. Gotham Books, a part of Penguin Group, saw the article and contacted James, which resulted in publishing Your Short Game Solution in 2015. “It was a chance to finally share my information, which was unique and different from anything else out there,” James said. He travels about 150 days per year, but current Tour players worldwide and individuals, such as from Fortune 500 companies, fly to Omaha for lessons with James. But he still makes time every summer to run Shadow Ridge’s junior golf program, where he teaches his methods to 175 kids during an eight-week program. “He’s an invaluable part of Shadow Ridge,” said Justin Shanahan, the club’s General Manager and James’ family friend. “He’s extremely loyal and has been part of the Shadow Ridge family since it opened in 1994.” James has his own office in a small building right next to the short game practice facility, which is ranked among the top 50 in the country. “James is extremely humble, and people don’t often realize the caliber of instructor that he is,” Justin said. “To have a Top 30 ranked instructor at a Top 50 ranked facility all right here in Omaha is pretty
special. No other instructor comes close to him in the Midwest.” In fact, this fall James will be inducted into the Nebraska Golf Hall of Fame. James is grateful that the Shanahan family put their trust in him to build his own academy from scratch and teach his own methods. “One of the main reasons I originally moved back to Omaha was to have the opportunity to work with my life-long friend, Steve Shanahan,” James said. “And the way they’ve designed the club property is impressive, with more than 8,000 trees, homes situated up high and the course down low—Shadow Ridge is a hidden gem.” James doesn’t have much time to play a round of golf on his own, but he said he’d rather spend his downtime with his family. However, as part of Titleist’s advisory board, he is able to demo all the newest products, which continue to improve as technology evolves. “Golf is a traditional game and had been taught a certain way for a long time,” he explained. “We’re smarter than we used to be, partly due to technology and partly due to study.” Thanks to James’ dedication, he changed the way golf’s short game is taught and has made it accessible to everyone, creating a name for himself, for Shadow Ridge Country Club, and for Omaha.
