LETTER from the EDITOR

DANIEL MULLER

is such a great time of year. Whether it’s kids’ sporting events or college game day tailgates, there are plenty of opportunities to gather with friends and family. Those ties are important and become especially unique when they go beyond just social. This issue we recognize families and friends who have formed businesses together and consider their customers to be just like family.

The Hinchcliff family has been in the auto business for four generations. Steve Hinchcliff and his son Jeff recently purchased the BMW, Jaugaur, Land Rover, and Mini Cooper dealership, creating the new H&H Premier Auto Group. Their customer-focused philosophy stems from a strong history of honesty and integrity that the Hinchcliff family values above all else. The Nolan family is another success story. Almost 20 years ago Melissa Nolan, together with her brother Michael and parents Greg and Nancy, decided to start a pizza restaurant in West Omaha. Named after her grandfathers, Sam & Louie’s New York Style Pizzeria has been serving homemade pizzas and pastas that cater to families. Whether in their restaurants or at special events, they

create a family-friendly atmosphere. Friends are often like family, as is the case with Lorrie Williams and Joy Johnson of Fluff Interior Design. The friends and business partners design with families in mind and help them turn a house into a home. Another example is Tyler Curnes, who renovated a tire service station in downtown Elkhorn into Main Street Gallery and Studios. Together with fellow artists and friends, they have created a unique venue that welcomes everyone to enjoy their talents. While you’re out and about spending time with your own family and friends, be sure to stop by and visit these familybased businesses. Jack Shotbolt Editor in Chief

ouring the Street of Dreams can feel like a fantasy with houses that have luxurious features and state-of-the art designs. It also gives builders the opportunity to showcase their work and highlight styles they might not normally build. But for Greg Frazell with G. Lee Homes, entering a house in the 2016 Street of Dreams at Bluewater in Valley wasn’t a specialty project, but rather one that was already in process and being designed for functional, family living.

G. Lee Homes turned a family’s dream into a reality

Greg built a home previously for the 2014 Street of Dreams in the South Hamptons subdivision in Gretna, and he was asked to do another one this year. He was already designing a home in the area and asked the owners if they’d be interested. They agreed even though it meant pushing up the timeline slightly. “It was fun, high energy, and we all fed off the added sense of urgency,” Greg said. “They made some great decisions and made it easy to build a really nice home.” The story and a half home is just under 5,000 sq. ft. with the master on the main floor and four additional bedrooms upstairs. Due to the water table height at Bluewater, the house is built without a basement, which is a unique concept

and required a lot of thought in designing the HVAC system. Greg also wanted to create an entertainment area similar to a basement, which he accomplished with the sunken living room on the second floor. “The homeowners are a young, growing family, so we wanted to give them a traditional home with space for children as well as space for entertaining,” he said. Creating a division of space was important for achieving both goals. Greg designed two staircases, with one that connects to a stone column off the entryway and looks like a freestanding structure. Extra sound proofing was also designed into the floor plan so that noise was minimized throughout the house. The entire home was also engineered to be the highest efficiency, with a five-zone geothermal HVAC system and radiant floor heat on the main level. Greg’s inspiration for the home was Frank Lloyd Wright’s Falling Waters prairie style, which pulls nature inside. The great room features natural walnut beams along the ceiling, cabinets contain walnut detailing, the office has a walnut barn door, and a custom walnut dining

table was built on site. He also had the face plates that cover the outlets on the waterfall style islands to match the grain of the quartz for a seamless look. “I’m extremely focused on attention to detail, which sets me apart from other builders,” Greg said. All aspects of the home are custom, including the maple stairs, iron stair rail, and European style cabinetry. A metallic crinkled wallpaper used as an accent on one wall of the master bedroom was the first off its kind. The home also uses the Control Four smart home automation system, which integrates every aspect of the house. From any smart device, homeowners can control lighting with set themes, turning on the fireplace, and setting the motorized screen on the patio. Even with all the details and custom touches, Greg said they were able to stay within budget and that much of the features in the home are what he regularly uses in the homes he builds. “All of the selections hold true to what we typically do,” he said. And after growing up in the business and celebrating his 10th anniversary as a homebuilder, Greg said there isn’t any style of home they can’t do. “Building a home is a personal experience and everyone has their own personal style. We have a great team, and it’s through those unique details that we can give you any type of home you want.”

Main Street Studios and Gallery brings new life to downtown Elkhorn

p

art of downtown Elkhorn’s appeal is its historic charm. During the early 1900s many of the buildings housed gas stations and service centers for motorists passing through along Lincoln Highway. One of those buildings, built in 1912, sold tires, and Tyler Curne’s grandfather used to stop there every time he drove through town. For 30 years the building sat vacant, until recently, when Tyler purchased the building at auction and turned it into artist studios and a gallery that could once again benefit the downtown Elkhorn community.

Tyler seemed destined to create this project. As a finance major in college, he decided to pursue art after traveling abroad and visiting a glass blower’s studio in Venice. After returning to the States, he changed majors and learned how to work with glass, buying bigger and bigger kilns each time. He envisioned opening artist studios but hadn’t decided on a location. Then one day while sitting at Shevy’s Sports Bar and Grill in Elkhorn, he noticed an auction sign on the building across the street—the same building his grandfather had told him stories about growing up. Taking all the money he had saved to put toward buying his first house, Tyler went to the auction, bid on the building, and won. Then he and his father spent the next two months on

demolition and rebuilding it from the ground up. “There was no plumbing, electrical was 38 years out of date, and since it was winter, snow had fallen through the cracked roof and piled up,” he said. There were even 85 used tires still sitting inside from when it had been a tire shop. After working with CLH Architects and Phoenix Construction, Tyler finally got to a point where he could invite other artists to join him. He designed the building to include four separate artist studios, accessible to the public, with the main hall serving as a gallery to showcase their work. “All of the artists who are in the building fell into my lap,” he said. Each one has a unique discipline. Tyler creates custom kiln formed glass art and lighting, Jane Kathol is an acrylic landscape artist, Dave Biehl is a bronze sculptor, and Levent Oz creates handcrafted silver jewelry. Jane lived across the street from Tyler, who has been friends with her son since kindergarten. Dave, who is a retired veterinarian from Hastings, learned about the planned gallery during a chance conversation with the owner of Bella Vita restaurant next door, and

Tyler’s mother had purchased a piece of jewelry from Levent at his previous location and suggested Tyler talk to him. Now Tyler has a waiting list of artists who want to join the group, so he’d like to include guest artists at the gallery when space allows. All of the artists in residence say it’s a perfect combination because they’re able to focus on their work more in the studios but are also accessible to the public and potential customers. The gallery doesn’t just house each artist; they all oversee operations as well. On any given day, at least one of the artists is working in house, but they take turns running the front desk. “When people walk in, they’re greeted by the artists and can ask us questions about our work,” Jane said, adding that they also find inspiration from each other and collaborate on the pieces shown throughout the gallery. A unique addition to the 5,500 sq. ft. space is the apartment Tyler built at the back of the building—appropriate since that’s where his initial housing money went. Using repurposed wood from the building and nearby Elkhorn grain elevator, Tyler designed the space himself and loves the convenience it provides to his work. Eventually it may become additional gallery, classroom, or event space, especially as those needs grow. But in the meantime, Tyler just wants people to come for the art and interact with the artists. “We’re all here daily,” he said. “And this is an amazing opportunity for us.”

OUR passion

If Fluff Interior Design sounds familiar, it’s probably because the two friends first began as Fluff Your Stuff—a design service that used a homeowner’s existing items to redecorate a room. What they quickly discovered was that clients wanted new items for their home, often asking Lorrie and Joy to help them 34 |

shop for a sofa or choose paint colors. In 2012 they changed the name and switched to a full package design focusing on completely finished spaces at half the price of the national average—about $10,000 per room rather than $21,000. “We like our niche market, with our goal to design lovely, livable spaces for

families,” Lorrie said. Most projects take an average of three months to complete. After an initial consult with the client to find out what they want, Fluff puts together a presentation that shows the finished space, including pictures of all items and how they’d be placed in the room. But the

pictures aren’t just representational. They’re photos of actual items that Fluff has, including prices. “When a client gives us their budget, it’s our job to find exact items that fit into that budget, and clients know exactly what it’s going to cost,” Lorrie said. Once all items are ordered and have arrived at the Fluff studio, they schedule a one-time install for the HGTV type reveal. Many of the vendors that Fluff uses are local as well as online sources such as Etsy and even retail stores such as Home Goods or Marshalls. For each project they propose a “good, better, and best” budget with items from various vendors that fit into each. For example, rather than spend $350 on each pillow, some clients might want their entire pillow budget for a whole room to be $350, so Fluff finds vendors to meet that. “We know it makes more sense to invest in a quality couch that will last rather than spend a lot of money on something that might not last as long for a family that has kids and pets using it every day,” Lorrie said. Fluff posts before and after photos of their projects on their web site and Facebook page and has developed a strong social media following. They started receiving so many requests for where to purchase the items they featured, Lorrie and Joy decided to make them available in a retail setting. Last fall, they held their first Fluff Interior Design Market—a three-day in-studio sale where the general public could purchase similar furniture and accessories they use in their design projects. More than 1,500 people attended the first market, and they continue to hold it up to three times per year. Each market features completely different items, and most of the accessories are under $50. Much of what they design has a transitional style, with the current farmhouse rustic style as a popular trend. But Lorrie and Joy are committed to giving their clients what they want, not what the designers think is trendy. “Although no design is ever really timeless, we do try to think in terms of it lasting 10 years,” Joy said. “But we are different than other design firms in that we try to be more realistic in price range, which makes us more accessible and enables more people to be able to use a designer to achieve the homey, comfortable space they want.”

or more than 20 years Sam & Louie’s has been serving up its New York style pizza, which started at a single store in West Omaha. Now with 16 locations across six states throughout the Midwest, the family-owned restaurant knows how to make a good pie. But the depth of its menu goes far beyond pizza and pasta. Sam & Louie’s caters corporate events, weddings, and graduations to meet any budget and taste. But it’s all being done with the same family-friendly approach as when the Nolan family first started the franchise.

IMAGINE THE SMILE OF YOUR DREAMS

w w w . w h i t t e n d e n t i s t r y. c o m

Have you ever wanted to know what your dream smile could look like? What if you were able to “test drive” the smile of your dreams? Well, now you can.

After working in the pizza industry throughout high school and college, Melissa Nolan decided owning her own restaurant was her passion. Her father, Greg Nolan, who had worked for Electrolux in Omaha for 17 years, was ready for a career change at the same time. So when Melissa came home from college and announced she wanted to open a pizza place, Greg and his wife Nancy agreed. “I was never concerned with whether or not it would work,” he said. “I had the confidence it would.” Coming up with a name for the restaurant was a little more challenging. Greg’s criteria were that it had to be meaningful to the family and was easy to spell. One day the name finally hit him: Sam & Louie’s, named after his and Nancy’s fathers. They opened their first location at 120th & Blondo Streets, which had to be expanded within the first week to accommodate the explosion of customers. They now operate three stores in Omaha, and Michael Nolan, Greg and Nancy’s son, oversees Sam & Louie’s national franchising operations. Many friends have worked at the restaurants along the way, and now Melissa’s two daughters are on board as well. The Nolan’s initially started with pizza, calzones, strombolis, pastas, and hoagies, and have expanded their menu to include burgers, sandwiches, salads, and more. Sam & Louie’s has also been offering gluten free pizza for more than 10 years. Melissa, who is gluten intolerant, wanted a pizza crust that tasted better than what was available in stores, and now every topping they offer is gluten free, including their popular homemade Italian salad dressing. In the last year Sam & Louie’s has focused heavily on its catering business, led by marketing outreach coordinator Leah Parodi. They are able to offer everything from pizzas to prime rib. “We have large commercial kitchens and chefs

who are able to do plated beef tenderloin dinners for 200 people,” Leah said. “But we often do it more cost effectively than some of the larger caterers.” Homemade pastas include chicken and sausage tortellini, creamy pesto cavatappi, and homemade lasagna. Platters of antipasto skewers, stuffed calzones, and buffalo wings are also available. They even offer breakfast strombolis that are filled with eggs, cheddar, choice of meat and vegetables and served with salsa on the side. “We have options for $10 per person or $50 per person, and everything in between,” Leah added. Every aspect of their business is done with families in mind, including their franchises. Michael explained that franchising actually started by accident. “We had a few requests from people to start one, so we helped them,” he said. Now they have a formalized process in place but want to ensure owners have the same philosophy as they do. “We have a family friendly atmosphere at our restaurants and at every event we cater,” Melissa added. And after 22 years of working together as a family, the Nolan’s truly want everyone to feel welcome to “gather around our table”.

fall

in love with this season’s new hues Tertiary color palettes are trending for Fall & Winter 2016! As the cool weather rolls in consider pairing romantic pastels with their saturated counterpoints – layer a dark red wine with a dusty coral, subtle blush, and chalky mustard yellow. Combine rich hues of deep blueberry and a softer feathery blue-jay with concrete gray. Think warm colorful sunsets meeting coastal ocean blues… trust that what works in nature will work for your home décor! We can’t help falling in love with this season’s new hues! A tip the pros know - keep your larger upholstery items neutral and be brave with color in artwork, wall paint, chairs, ottomans, coffee tables, accessories, and throw pillows. Replacing a sofa isn’t something our clients do every year; however, adding a splash of color on their sofas with new throw pillows is a clever update which is not too costly. Flea market finds such as wood dining chairs, chests of drawers, and vintage iron headboards are great items to paint a bold hue. Parking a navy or yellow chair up to a metal writing desk and using it next to your bed in lieu of a nightstand is a smart use of space and a 50 |

great way to add color. Take risks this season – add personality to your space with a crazy cool black and white graphic piece of artwork, wallpaper or window treatment fabric! One accent wall with wallpaper, brick, or large format plane tile is all it takes to create an unforgettable backdrop in your room. Incorporating sexy mixed metallics is also hot for fall - warm gold light fixtures, a rose gold end table, and copper bowls or vases will add instant shine to your interior. Your home should include colors which inspire you; integrate your favorites to add character and make your living spaces unique!

The “write” plan a column on estate and financial planning for everyone By LISA M. LEHAN, J.D.

“Our new Constitution is now established, and has an appearance that promises permanency; but in this world nothing can be said to be certain, except death and taxes.” - Benjamin Franklin, 1789

As the saying goes, “death and taxes” are some of the few certainties in this life. In the case of the federal estate tax, the rate is high: 40%. This means you may be leaving your not-so-favorite Uncle Sam a big portion of your estate. However, under current law, the majority of Americans will not pay the federal estate tax. The federal estate tax can be minimized, or perhaps even eliminated, if you leave your estate to your spouse, if you leave your estate to charity, or if you use your federal estate tax exemption amount. First, the marital deduction allows an individual to leave assets to a surviving spouse free of the federal estate tax. Mechanically, you receive a deduction equal to the amount of assets passing to your surviving spouse. However, when your surviving spouse later dies, the assets are taxed in his or her estate, unless he or she has remarried and leaves everything to a new spouse. Second, the unlimited charitable deduction allows an individual to leave assets to a qualified charity free of the federal estate tax. Similar to the marital deduction, you receive a deduction equal to the amount of assets passing to the charity. If you want to leave a portion of your estate to someone other than your spouse or a charity, then you may use

your exemption amount to shelter a portion of your estate from the federal estate tax. An individual who passes away in 2016 is permitted to pass $5.45 million of wealth before paying the 40% federal estate tax, as long as he or she hasn’t previously used a portion of that exemption amount for lifetime gifts. If your estate is worth more than the exemption amount, other tax planning methods are available to minimize your federal estate tax bill and maximize the amount you leave to your legatees. As you can see, the federal estate tax may not be a certainty at your death. You should engage a tax professional to navigate the rules and put a proper plan in place. The choice of lawyer is important and should not be based solely on advertisements.

As H&H transitions its new premier brands, a customer-focused philosophy comes forward

p

erspective is an interesting concept. The same view can look completely different depending on where you stand. H&H President Steve Hinchcliff learned this at an early age when his mother told him to compare their lawn to the neighbor’s. One looked greener than the other depending on which side of the street he was on. With the recent addition of BMW, Jaguar, Land Rover, and Mini Cooper to the H&H brands, Steve and his team are working hard to create an experience for customers that looks inviting no matter where you stand, and it’s one that puts people first.

Steve’s grandfather started their first dealership in South Omaha during the Depression, and his father and uncle moved it to 84th & L Streets in 1968. Over the next 30 years Steve and his family built it into one of the largest dealerships in Omaha. In 2007 Steve became sole owner, and then added H&H Kia in 2010 with a second Kia dealership planned for West Omaha next year. He also recently purchased GMC-Buick from Rhoden Auto Center in Council Bluffs. Steve attributes much of their success to what he calls a strong line of honesty and respect. “My grandfather and father were emphatic about integrity; more so than anyone I’ve ever known,” he said. The addition of the new H&H Premier Automotive brands was the result of opportune timing that would also enable Steve and his son, Jeff Hinchcliff who co-owns the new dealership, to continue the family legacy. Admittedly, Steve is also a bigger risk taker than his grandfather and father were, and said he enjoys that aspect of the business. “Risk management is a big

part of being an entrepreneur. Too many people take big risks too soon, or they don’t take a risk when the time is right for success.” Steve clearly has a sense of knowing when that time is right to take risk. The purchase of the new dealership located near Westroads Mall and formerly owned by Markel Auto Group, has already proven successful. This past August they sold as many Jaguars in the one month as were sold in the previous year. The service business has also increased by 58% simply from implementing the same policies that have made their other dealerships successful—valuing customers’ time and money. These include cutting many popular service prices nearly in half and increasing the number of low-mileage loaner cars from 25 to 75, which are available to anyone who brings their car in for service, regardless of whether or not they purchased their car from H&H. Steve brought in their Director of Service, Don Korner, from H&H Chevrolet, to run the new department, which retained all of its technical staff.

“These are complicated cars to work on, but the technicians in place were very knowledgeable,” Steve explained. “At the same time we’re bringing in additional highly trained people who are used to working in a quickened cadence, which is one dictated by the customer, and it’s a culture change for this dealership.” Another culture change evident is on the sales side. Although up 24% through August of this year, Steve said their focus is on customer satisfaction and retention, which is the core of his entire business philosophy. “From day one it was clear there was an opportunity for greater potential with these dealerships,” he said. The most obvious area to him was the way cars were being sold. He brought in Tony Holechek, who had been the vice president and general manager of sales at H&H Kia, which is the largest Kia dealership in Nebraska and Iowa. Tony implemented a sales approach that is flexible, friendly, and full of customer amenities. Customer satisfaction is so critical, four weeks after a purchase, they take the time to go over options on

the car again with the customer to make sure they know how everything works. “We value a customer’s time and money equally,” Steve said. “We believe in earning loyalty, which can be difficult to do.” He’s so passionate about making sure his customers are happy, Steve makes his personal cell phone number available to everyone and takes customer feedback to heart. “Even if we have 100 satisfied customers and one who’s not, I’m unhappy about the one who’s not and want to address it.” Despite being a fourth generation owner of H&H, Steve doesn’t consider himself a car man. Rather, he considers himself “a business person in the car business.” He likes the challenge of making a dealership successful, especially these new brands, which are essentially three dealerships in one. His father liked to use the phrase “be careful what you wish for, you just might get it.” And Steve is delighted that in the

case of the Premier dealership, that held true, and he has the opportunity to apply his team’s expertise to these luxury brands. “Just like in any business, hopefully you have some acumen and knowledge of what it takes, as well as a great team of people, and we do have an awesome team,” he added. Not only does Steve bring a unique perspective to the operations side of the business, but he does with his team as well. He explained that in a culture focused on winning, he’s less of a “winning guy” and more of a “do it really well every day guy.” He said even if a dealership is making sales 40% of the time, it means they’re losing sales 60% of the time. “You don’t create a culture based on something that’s unsuccessful. You have a culture based on doing—doing something really well, every day, and exceeding expectations, and that is the key to making a business into an awesome business!”
