EDGE
With all of that said, it is time for me to pass the torch on to someone who can carry EDGE forward for years to come with a dedicated focus on the publication and its daily needs and opportunities. While it is hard to let go of something I have taken great pride in developing, I have made the decision to sell the magazine to someone I feel can take it to new heights while keeping its look and feel the same for our readers. I am pleased to announce that Carole Sprunk is now the Editor In Chief and Publisher/Owner of EDGE Magazine. Carole has an incredible story of personal growth and triumphs, which I know will serve her well as she takes the magazine forward. I ask that our amazing community embrace Carole in this venture as I know she will exceed all expectations while giving EDGE the dedicated attention it needs.
I will stay connected to the publication by assisting Carole, Kathy Rygg, and Quentin Lueninghoener in a consulting capacity, but will re-focus my energy into The Private Mortgage Group, which has always been my first love, and just recently celebrated its 10-year anniversary. My growing team at TPMG has re-energized me while providing me with new challenges that I look forward tackling in 2017 and beyond. I want to send a very heartfelt thank you to the many, many supporters of EDGE Magazine. It has been my pleasure to produce a publication that YOU love and keep on your coffee tables. I will shed a few tears letting this “baby” go, but it’s time. I cannot say thank you enough. Jack Shotbolt Editor in Chief

John Caniglia Homes spans generations
ohn Caniglia built his first home in 1979, and later when his son Cory was in high school at Millard North, during the summers Cory helped his dad on job sites, learning each of the trades. Cory loved the work and knew then it’s what he wanted to do for a living. Today, Cory serves as a project manager and is part of the sales team for John Caniglia Homes, helping not just his dad, but his mother Cindy, brother Jesse, and sister Kylie, who all work as part of the family business.

Although styles and trends have changed over the 35 years since John Caniglia Homes started, they’ve always focused on custom builds using floor plans they’ve developed and evolved over time. The company typically builds 12-15 custom homes a year and tries to always have six spec homes available in varying floor plans. Cory said a majority of what they used to build were ranches, which turned into two-story homes, and now it’s evolved into the story and a half, which has become the most popular in the West Omaha market and is the floor plan for the 3,200 sq. ft. home currently for sale in Southpointe Estates in Elkhorn. This particular home includes a true two-story great room and a staircase in the middle of the house rather than at

It’s a great feature for letting in natural light to the lower level.” The two-story great room is another feature that has evolved on their homes. Cory explained that their original twostory floor plan had an angled ceiling in the great room with a small overlook from the second floor. Now they’ve opened it up so you can look out onto the great room from the large second floor loft. “Kids can be upstairs in the loft while parents entertain downstairs and still feel like they’re part of everything,” Cory said. Detailed ceilings are another trend that John Caniglia Homes includes. This house incorporates wooden ceiling beams in the kitchen, patterned ceilings in the great room, master bedroom and loft; as well as tiered ceilings in each of

its additional four bedrooms. “It’s almost uncommon not to have ceiling details in a house,” Cory added. Cabinets have also evolved into a more modern, simple style without as much glazing and are more sophisticated with soft closing doors and drawers. Countertops are also moving away from granite toward quartz, which is denser and offers greater consistency with color and grain. Style and warmth are first and foremost with John Caniglia Homes, so they incorporate a transitional look, which is between a modern and craftsman style. It uses combinations of “greige”—mixing tans, white, and greys into their décor, which in their spec homes is all designed by Cindy and Kylie. Many customers are also finishing basements at the time of build, and some are also adding outdoor pools along with covered patios that house TVs and fire pits. Family is what the Caniglia’s are all about—working together as a family to cater to other families. Cory said they always want to continue to grow and evolve as housing trends evolve, but they want to always have their homes remain practical. And they want to continue to provide the best service they can. “Everybody in our company cares about our customers, and we hope they feel like part of the family, because that’s how we feel about them,” Cory said. It’s that value placed on family that has made John Caniglia Homes a trusted builder for generations.

The importance of lighting
What is your cue to rise and shine for the day? Is it the alarm buzzing on your iPhone or the morning sun peeking in? Although each of you may be able to come up with a unique answer to this question, there is one common environmental factor mentioned above that impacts everyone’s sleeping patterns. The human body’s internal alarm clock is regulated by the presence or absence of light. Both natural and artificial light in your home should be given careful consideration. It is as important to think through the placement of overhead lighting, task lighting, and ambient lighting as it is the natural lighting throughout your home. Incorporate multiple sources of light in each of your rooms and don’t be afraid to mix it up. Different types of lighting such as lamps, chandeliers, sconce lights, etc. provide a unique touch to your home. Putting dimmer switches on your interior lighting is inexpensive and a terrific way to soften or brighten a room. Illuminating the toe kicks in your cabinetry and the risers in your stairs are both excellent for way finding in the evenings. 22 |

Installing the right window treatments is an opportune way to control the transmittal of natural light into your spaces. A well-dressed window contributes to proper functionality and also gives your home a more polished look. For those who need pitch black darkness to sleep soundly, consider using black out shades, sun down Allure shades, or soft treatments with blackout lining. Be sure to have a professional measure for window treatments. A snug fit will prevent light from filtering in when it is not desired. Asking the right questions is what an interior designer is trained to do. Proper planning and attention to detail is important to provide a well-lit home and results in a happier, well-rested you!

veryone has a part of their body they don’t love. Often we learn to live with it, but for some it can affect self-esteem and daily living. However, the thought of having surgery that involves weeks of recovery can be intimidating. Fortunately, with impressive advances in technology within just the past few years, the options available for cosmetic procedures have exploded, especially in the area of non-invasive procedures that require no down time. And one of the leading providers is right here in Omaha: SCULPT Cosmetic Surgery, Laser & Aesthetic.

Dr. Gerard Stanley and his wife Erin have created an environment that promotes relaxation, comfort, and trust. With a warmth that equals your own home rather than a clinical atmosphere, they emphasize the caring aspect of what they do—which is help people feel better about themselves. Whether that involves medical aesthetic procedures such as Botox, chemical peels, or fillers; surgical procedures such as liposuction, tummy tucks, and breast augmentation; or laser treatments such as Laser Hair Removal and TruSculpt, which is fat reduction that requires no down time. Although Dr. Stanley’s practice originally began with mostly surgical procedures, innovation in technology has allowed him to evolve the practice to focus on more non-invasive methods. “There has been an explosion in non-in-
vasive technology, and it’s becoming more mainstream; many people don’t need surgery for what they want to accomplish,” he said. Innovation through education is at the core of SCULPT. Technology has made more things possible, so helping people understand all the options available is key. For example, traditional liposuction has several weeks downtime; laser liposuction at SCULPT is several days. TruSculpt has zero downtime, and patients can drive themselves to and from appointments since this treatment is non-surgical. “We are truly the only all-encompassing practice in Omaha,” Erin said. “We offer a full range of services to meet every need with a focus on achieving a natural look—dramatic, not drastic results.” In fact, Dr. Stanley said that several times a week he ends up redirecting

patients to do a more non-invasive procedure from what they originally intended. He’s also careful not to just go along with the latest fads; rather, he said he’s very particular about the equipment and technology they invest in, and it must pass his strict standards in order to be good enough for his patients. A graduate of Creighton University Medical School, Dr. Stanley is also an active member of a number of national associations for cosmetic surgeons. He is the youngest surgeon to be asked to serve as a board member for the American Society of Cosmetic Physicians. SCULPT has also won numerous awards, including Best of Omaha’s “Best Cosmetic Surgeon,” “Best Breast Augmentation,” and “Best Tummy Tuck.” Dr. Stanley and Erin are also the busy parents of three young boys, with Dr. Stanley coaching their baseball, football, and basketball teams. spider vein therapy, and the TruSculpt fat reduction. “Amy is really gifted,” Erin said. “She is friendly, honest, and really connects with our clients, plus her results are great.” The entire culture of SCULPT is one in which they value that connection with guests. “We want this to be a place where you can be comfortable and relaxed the minute you walk in the door, and our entire staff really embodies that,” she added. The Stanley’s really do want everyone who comes in to have a great experience, whether it’s for a free initial consultation, a spa treatment, or surgery. “You can get cosmetic procedures anywhere, but you can’t get both great customer service and great results everywhere,” Dr. Stanley said. His goal is to promote confidence in each client that walks through the door. “To me, confidence is the most beautiful thing about a person. It’s special to be a part of a person’s journey in helping them get their confidence back and to see not just the physical, but the emotional change that people go through. We help rejuvenate people from the inside out.”

HETRA’s programs offer benefits that go beyond just physical therapy Story by KATHY RYGG Photos by CHRISTOPHER TIERNEY
here is no secret so close as that between a rider and his horse.” This quote by author R.S. Surtees perfectly captures that special bond between human and horse. Which is why when it comes to helping people with physical and emotional disabilities, horses are a natural fit. Twenty-eight years ago the Heartland Equine Therapeutic Riding Academy (HETRA) began with one horse and one student and has grown into a new facility with 20 horses, up to 140 students a week, and 200 volunteers, and they’re still in need of help to continue to grow to meet the needs of families.

Development Director and Instructor Jodi Teal has been with the organization for 17 years. Her nephew was a student, and she first volunteered as a side walker. Soon she became a certified instructor through PATH International, the Professional Association of Therapeutic Horsemanship, and then she became Development Director in 2010. She said the coordination it takes to run an operation such as this is a huge task that relies on hundreds of people each week. HETRA runs year round with 12week sessions and is available for ages as young as two years old through adulthood for a wide variety of physical and emotional disabilities. Students ride once a week for 30 minutes in one of three programs. Therapeutic riding teaches students how to control the horse using reining and other aids and are conducted in groups of two or three participants. Hippotherapy is one-onone with a licensed therapist focused on improving balance, coordination, and fine motor skills. Carriage driving offers the reward of controlled driving from a carriage seat, often best for students who are unable to mount a horse for various reasons. Public riding lessons and summer camps are also offered to anyone in the community, including siblings and parents of students. HETRA also offers riding services for Veterans, which can be especially therapeutic for those suffering from Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). “Horses require you to be patient and are great non-verbal communicators,” Jodi explained. “They respond to the individual on their back. shows that in a 45-minute ride, the body makes 3000-5000 posture adjustments, so it’s a great workout.” The benefits of equine therapeutic riding are numerous. Physically, riders improve their core muscles, balance, and coordination. They also form strong relationships with their leaders and especially their horses. “The giggles and smiles we see on students is what I love most,” Jodi said. This is certainly the case with Ethan Falk, who has cerebral palsy, and has been a student for 10 years. His mother Kim said he loved riding from his first lesson and has had the same horse, Rainbow, for the last six years. Because he has spastic limbs and a weak trunk, stretching over the barrel of a horse helps his legs and strengthens his core muscles. Although he can’t sit up independently, occasionally he is able to when on his horse. Ethan also learned his directions as a result of riding, which enabled him to get a power wheelchair. “The instructors are always encouraging him with speech, identifying colors and numbers around the arena, so there are many aspects of therapy happening at once,” Kim said. The large barn and riding arena at the new facility offer ample space. “The barn can be smelly,” Jodi said, chuckling. “But

it has sights and sounds you won’t find anywhere else, and it’s truly therapeutic for everyone, not just the students but for the instructors, therapists, and volunteers.” HETRA’s new facility, the Robert A. Falk Farm, named after Ethan’s grandfather, opened in 2014 after having outgrown its previous location, which was the home of Executive Director Edye Godden. HETRA also has a $3 million capital campaign underway to help with ongoing improvements and operational costs. One program they want to develop is the Tack Shack, which sells donated saddles, bridles, and halters. Profits would go toward the student scholarship fund, and HETRA hopes to eventually have the store staffed by adult students as part of its life skills program. With growth expected to be at 180 students per week by the end of the year, Jodi said they need additional volunteers to be side walkers, barn leaders, or tacking horses for riders. Volunteering is open to ages 12 and up, and they give tours twice a month to learn about opportunities and have multiple levels of training. They are also always in need of additional horses, particularly those ready for a second career. And of course monetary donations are always welcome. April 29th HETRA will hold its 17th annual Blue Jeans and Dreams community fundraising event to help supplement on average $100 needed every time a student rides. “The best thing about our program is that the disability disappears when they’re riding,” Jodi said. “The wheelchair or cane is gone, and the person owns this sport and knows it’s all theirs.”

“t
he family that prays together stays together” is a familiar quote that holds true for the Egermier family. But they also work together, eat lunch together almost daily, and travel together. And through it all they’ve built a close-knit family and a successful business in which they’ve extended their family philosophy to include each and every individual they work with.

Jerry and Deb Egermier met while both working for the FBI in Washington, D.C. During the Watergate scandal, agent training was put on hold, so Jerry returned to his native hometown of Omaha and Deb transferred to the FBI Omaha office. Jerry went into the banking and insurance industry for a number of years, but when faced with the decision to relocate for work, he and Deb decided to stay in Omaha to raise their four boys. Instead, Jerry started working at a friend’s financial planning office, and in 1993 opened his own investment company: Egermier Wealth Management Group. Deb had since stopped working at the FBI to stay home with their sons and started helping Jerry with processing paperwork and back office organization. Today, after 41 years of marriage, the couple still works together, although there is some debate as to who is truly “in charge.” Two of their sons also work with them, Mike and Mark, along with a third Certified Financial Planner, Jake Rehder, who Deb and Jerry consider to be a fifth son. Their son Marshall is also industry, but with another firm, and their son Matt is currently in the Mar-
keting industry, but Deb and Jerry hope one day he may join the firm as well. Interestingly, joining the family business was never an expectation, and Mike said he hadn’t considered it growing up. “If you would have told me at age 16 that I’d be working with my family someday, I never would have believed it,” he admitted. But he did have a natural interest in business and investing, so after graduating from college, Mike worked for Oppenheimer Funds in Denver. Unfortunately the experience came right as the tech bubble burst. He moved back to Omaha a few years later and started helping out at his dad’s firm in 2001. In 2008, his brother Mark joined them after having worked for Metlife the previous four years. “We didn’t recruit our children to come work for us,” Deb explained. “We felt that it would be difficult for the kids to be trained in the industry by their parents, and that it would be much more beneficial for them to gain outside viewpoints of the industry.” She added that when they did eventually come on board, it was a pleasant surprise. “It’s a good feeling to have built a business that they want to be a part of.” And
one advantage of having children join the business, is that clients know that the same philosophy established by Jerry and Deb will continue long after they retire. That philosophy places a heavy emphasis on education, both for employees of the company and for its clients. Every advisor at Egermier Wealth Management has the Certified Financial Planner designation, holding them to a higher standard than some of their industry peers. And educating clients on all facets of their finances is a priority. “Everybody needs financial planning,” Jerry said. “Some people like to do it themselves, but many people need assistance, and we want to help them do that, so we offer an honest, ethical place they can trust.” Many of their clients are generational, which leads to different investment styles and needs, so understanding which strategies to implement is important. And because they work with so many families, the firm holds fun events every year for its client families. They also support community efforts such as adopting a family at Christmas, holding a document shredding day after tax season where donations go to Skutt Catholic High School, located across the street from their office. Some of the advisors also serve as board members on the Nebraska Cancer Alliance as well as their finance committee, trustee for the Mary Our Queen school endowment, and Mark is president of the Nebraska Financial Education Coalition. Even in a busy, professional business environment, the family makes time for each other, including eating lunch together at the office, where they are often joined by spouses and grandchildren. They share lots of laughter, challenge each other to be their best at work and at home, and most importantly, they know they can rely on each other. “We’re like an old-fashioned family where everyone helps each other out,” Deb said. “We’re so blessed; everybody is an equal and gets along, which is what you hope for with a family business.”

OUR safety ADVICE FROM THE EXPERTS AT
Tourniquets no longer considered last resort for lifethreatening bleeding By SHAWN WHITTINGTON, 88 Tactical Instructor
48 |
EDGE
A
n injury on a shooting range, a motor vehicle accident, a child running through a plate glass door, and even an animal bite are all injuries I have personally experienced in the field that required aggressive bleeding control to save the victim’s life. When I got started in EMS over two decades ago, we were taught that tourniquets were only to be used as a last resort. Once applied, the tourniquets had to be loosened every five minutes to restore blood flow to the affected limb to prevent extensive tissue necrosis – death of most or all organ tissue cells due to blood loss. The time of application was to be written on the patient’s forehead, in blood if need be. Those days are long gone and tourniquets are now at the top of the list as the recommended treatment for life-threatening bleeding from an extremity. Bleeding to death from an extremity remains a leading cause of death on the battle field—one that is preventable with swift and appropriate treatment
by the application of a tourniquet. These injuries don’t only happen in combat. Numerous medical studies have shown that commercial tourniquets can be left on for several hours without causing permanent damage to the affected limb. The same cannot be said of improvised tourniquets. Research shows improvised tourniquets to be less effective and more damaging. This is mostly due to the improvised tourniquet not being constructed and applied properly. If you find yourself in a situation where the only option is to improvise a tourniquet, it must be done correctly. There are several good commercial tourniquets available on the market. 88 Tactical stocks the Combat Application Tourniquet (CAT). This tourniquet is approved for US military use and has been tested and proven in the field. Anytime I am participating in a high-risk activity (shooting, hunting, etc.), I have a tourniquet either on my person or within reach. I also keep extras stocked in my med kit. Proper tourniquet use is covered in 88 Tactical’s multiple levels of Tactical Medicine (TACMED) courses – offered to both civilians and law enforcement/military personnel. Like any piece of gear, you must take the tourniquet out of the package and practice with it. You must be proficient in training first if you expect to apply a tourniquet successfully under the stress of a real-life incident. For more information on the 88 Tactical TACMED courses, visit 88tactical.com.

OUR wealth
The “write” plan a column on estate and financial planning for everyone For many years I’ve advised clients the IRS is the worst creditor to have. Why? The IRS, like many creditors, charges interest if you do not pay the amount you owe on time. But the IRS also imposes penalties, which add up quickly and result in a much larger liability than just the income tax you owe.
ABOUT THE AUTHOR I am a member of the Estate and Business Succession Planning and Tax Practice Groups at Koley Jessen, PC LLO, located in One Pacific Place. You may contact me directly at 402.343.3881.
If you can’t afford to pay your income tax bill on time, you should still file your tax return by the filing deadline. When you file, pay as much of your tax bill as you can – even if you can’t pay the whole bill. It is a crime not to file your return and the IRS imposes the “failureto-file” penalty of 5% of the amount you owe each month your return is late, up to 25%. If you file your return on time, but do not pay your entire tax bill, the IRS imposes the “failure-to-pay” penalty equal to one-half of one percent (0.005%) each month until you pay your outstanding balance. If you fail to file and fail to pay, the maximum penalty per month is 5%. Consider the following examples to illustrate the impact of the failure-to-file penalty. Taxpayer owes $5,000 in April. In Situation A, Taxpayer files and pays in September. In Situation B, Taxpayer files her return on time, but pays in September.
Situation A File and pay late Tax Owed $5,000 Interest (presume 4%) $100 Failure-to-File Penalty $1,500* Failure-to-Pay Penalty Total $6,600

EDGE
Situation B File timely, pay late $5,000 $100 $0 $150 $5,250
If you can’t pay on time, you should consider obtaining a loan at a lower interest rate than the effective rate you’ll pay the IRS for interest and penalties. Alternatively, you may be able to work out a payment plan with the IRS, depending on your income, allowable living expenses, assets, and your compliance history. Interest and penalties will still accrue with an installment agreement, but the IRS won’t take adverse action against you, such as filing a tax lien or seizing your assets. To avoid this situation in future years, be sure you are withholding the proper amount of tax from your paycheck. If you are self-employed, be sure you file and pay quarterly estimated withholding payments. Work with an accountant and tax adviser to navigate the issues. The choice of lawyer is important and should not be based solely on advertisements.

maha loves its restaurants, and with so many new options opening all the time, sometimes we forget about those that have been around for years. Le Voltaire itself hasn’t changed much. It still has the same quaint, charming décor and intimate feel with a private party room in the back. Much of the staff is also the same, including General Manager Nic Henke, and Executive Chef Wilson Calixte who has been working with Cedric for the past six years after winning a Chopped-inspired interview process. Cedric gave each chef interviewing for the position a “mystery box” of food with four ingredients and gave them 30 minutes to create a dish. “Wilson was the best, hands down,” Cedric said. The two continue to have a natural flow in the kitchen, and Cedric encourages him to come up with creative, expressive new specials. One of Cedric’s favorite is fresh fish. He said that just within the last few years, it’s become easier to have fresh fish flown into Omaha daily. And he especially enjoys the variety available, such as monkfish, mackerel, and branzino, which is a type of European sea bass. “We can get fresh grouper from the Caribbean that’s so fresh it’s on your plate within 36 hours of being caught,” Cedric said. “It’s also a challenge to cook fish well, so I enjoy that.” It’s one of the reasons why the Bouillabaisse de Marseille (seafood stew) is his favorite item on the menu. It contains a medley of fresh fish, muscles, tomatoes and potatoes in a fish fumet broth, served with a fresh baguette topped with aioli. Beef, pork, and bison are also popular menu items, and Cedric is a big proponent of locally sourced food, with beef from Nebraska, pork from Iowa, and even bison from the Dakota’s. Most of the cheese and wine are imported from France, and

Le Voltaire has won the Wine Spectator Award for the past 14 years. Although Le Voltaire includes traditional French dishes such as escargot, duck confit, and foie gras, it’s not the stereotypical small amounts of food served on large plates that some picture when they think of French cuisine. Cedric describes their items as “comfort food,” including many of his grandmother’s recipes, all of which led him to be inducted into the Omaha Restaurant Association’s Hall of Fame. Additionally, he’s an instructor at Metropolitan Community College’s culinary program, and serves as Honorary French Consul for the states of Nebraska, South Dakota and North Dakota. In 2013 Cedric opened Le Petite Paris Bakery next door, and recently opened a second bakery in Papillion, which serves both lunch and breakfast. Watching his original vision continue to flourish and provide high-quality, consistent food and customer service means everything to him. And he doesn’t plan to make any changes. For those who want to rediscover Le Voltaire, Valentine’s Day would be a great time. It’s three-course, all-inclusive dinner comes with a bottle of wine per couple and two seating options.
