very early in the morning and my grandmother and I had a long drive ahead of us. I had been there before, but this time something was different. She told me to look for the lights as we approached at dawn. And there they were. Stretching across what seemed to be all of the land: Omaha. I felt so alive! Years passed and that love never faded. Since then, I have lost my grandmother, but coming to Omaha feels like coming home to her. She worked in Omaha five days a week and came home to Osceola on the weekends. I still try to come to Omaha as often as I can, but my husband and I live in a small town outside of the city, and raising four boys keeps us busy! I discovered Edge exactly two years ago. Right away I had the same feeling: Alive. But with the growth of West Omaha, it had become so much more, and I wanted to be a part of it once again. I am so thankful that Jack Shotbolt has trusted me with the future of Edge. I am also hopeful that each and every one of you loves the magazine as much as I do. I am grateful for the wonderful talent behind the scenes. Kathy Rygg is such
a sweet, gifted and organized managing editor. Quentin Lueninghoener designs beautiful work for Edge and other publications. Christopher Tierney is an amazing photographer who finds all the right angles for the best photo shoots. New to Edge is a section called “Our Youth. This will feature youth from our community who are outstanding in any number of ways. We are looking for story ideas, so please share with us. This section is a bit personal for me as I am a strong believer that if children are given encouragement and tools, then anything is possible for them. As I dive into my new role, I would love to hear from you. I look forward to further developing and growing the magazine, and thank you all so much for your encouragement and support! hen the Morrissey family of Elkhorn decided to build a new home, they knew they wanted Curt Hofer Construction to be the one to do it. With three children, and one who’s reliant on a wheelchair, the Morrissey’s needed a house designed to accommodate someone with limited mobility. Curt Hofer had personal experience with the issue and worked with the Morrissey’s to incorporate features that met their needs. In fact, it was the first “barrier free” home featured in the 2007 Street of Dreams to incorporate this universal design that can benefit many homeowners.

At first glance, the four bedroom, 4,400 sq. ft. ranch style home in the Five Fountains subdivision located just north of West Dodge Road off 192nd Street, doesn’t look any different than a traditional home. But if you look closely, you’ll see that every entrance into the house is zero grade. There are no steps through the front door, into the house from the garage, onto the deck, or into the backyard from the walk-out basement. Hallways and doorways are wider, there’s more space between the kitchen island and countertops, and outlets are located higher on the wall so someone in a wheelchair doesn’t have to bend down to use it. Even the features that you might expect to find in a barrier free home were designed to blend seamlessly. An elevator to the lower level is hidden behind a door that could just as easily be a closet. bathroom allow for a wheelchair to roll underneath, and subtle carpeted ramps in the basement allow a wheelchair to access the sunken living room. “You don’t realize just how long and wide a wheelchair is until you have to push one around,” Kris Morrissey said. “There are so many things you run into when in a traditional home.” The universal design is ideal for anyone who might experience limited mobility. Kris said when her husband had knee surgery, it was so much easier for him to shower and move around the house while on crutches. Her parents always use the elevator when they visit because it’s so much easier for them than the stairs. “Although most people don’t need an elevator, it makes a difference when you have someone over to the house who needs it,” Kris added. They also installed wheelchair friendly carpet throughout the basement and a bar that’s easily accessible. The craftsman style interior of the home is filled with warm, rich-colored quarter-sawn red oak wood for custom cabinetry. It’s complimented by Brazilian cherry wood floors throughout the main level. oversized island with a built-in table at one end rather than a bar-height island so that it allows for a wheelchair to fit under. Kris said she loves to cook and entertain, so the 6-burner stove top and warming drawer are two of her favorite kitchen features. Off the kitchen is an open office area, drop zone, and separate laundry room. All closets in the home were also fitted with custom shelving by California Closets. The Cape Cod style exterior is complimented by professional landscaping from KM Landscaping. A water feature and fire pit are central to the backyard, and the neighborhood itself includes numerous fountains and walking paths. “This is a wonderful location with great neighbors and fantastic schools,” Kris said. “It’s been a wonderful place to raise our younger kids, and now that they’re older we’re ready to downsize. It will be the perfect home for anyone who wants ease of access and more space for whenever you might find yourself needing it.” For more information on this home, contact Julie Hillmer with Berkshire Hathaway Home Services, Julie.Hillmer@bhhsamb.com, 402-968-4963.

quiet CONFIDENCE
Finding your own style All built environments tell a visual story of those who inhabit and work within them. While looking around your space, pause for a moment to consider what the objects, images, and furniture in your home or office say about you. Do the spaces you occupy reflect your personality accurately? If not, it might be time for some updating. Inspiration can come from your personal interests, passions, destinations you have traveled to, your favorite colors, nature, etc. When a residential or commercial space is designed thoughtfully, with intention and purpose, it will function well and speak visually with a quiet confidence. Making mindful choices for your spaces will add original character and meaning. The private residence featured in this article showcases a Modern Farmhouse design with original black & white photographs which were taken by the homeowner on a trip to Europe. She and her husband share an appreciation of nature and animals. A neutral palette mimicking the Midwestern plains was utilized throughout their open concept floor plan. statement—velvet fabrics, a high pile shag rug, and a faux fur throw blanket contribute to this home’s tactile appeal. Down-to-earth design materials such as rustic wood and iron tables, ship lap, hardwood flooring, quartz and subway tile were utilized to create a feeling that was equally timeless, unpretentious and comfortable. Opening up and sharing a bit of yourself is the best way to personalize your living spaces, whether that be through displaying a favorite collection of fishing lures in a shadow box or fashioning the finished ends of a kitchen island to resemble barn wood doors from the farm you grew up on. Your home should reflect who you are, where you came from, your values, beliefs, specific taste, style sensibilities, and what matters most to you.

Four Sisters Boutique embodies generations of sophistication
hen spring fever hits, ladies like to shed their heavy sweaters and boots for silky floral fabrics and shoes that show off their pedicures. There’s something refreshing and fulfilling about shopping in-store rather than online, and even more satisfying is the personal experience you get from shopping at a locally-owned boutique. Four Sisters Boutique in Rockbrook Village provides a friendly, familiar environment reminiscent of a time when women and their dressmakers were like close friends—and that’s how owner Sarah Spooner intended it to be.

HAVE YOU EXPERIENCED DISAPPOINTING RESULTS WITH HORMONE REPLACEMENT?
Specializing in Bio-Identical Hormone Replacement Therapy.
With a natural affinity for fashion at an early age, Sarah always knew she wanted to work in the clothing industry. But it wasn’t until after completing her degree in small business entrepreneurship from UNO that she realized what that would look like. While recovering from surgery and with nothing else to do, she developed a complete business plan for a clothing store, followed by several years of research and traveling to other boutiques around the country. She also drew on generations of experience from her parents and especially her grandparents, who became the inspiration behind the eventual name of the store: Four Sisters Boutique. Sarah’s great-grandfather, Hyman Osoff, immigrated to the United States from Russia and owned a hardware store in downtown Omaha. His four daughters, whom Sarah said were sophisticated, well-mannered, and impeccably dressed, were referred to locally as “the beautiful Osoff girls,” and whom she named the store after. Jerome and Frances Milder, Sarah’s grandparents, were a strong presence throughout Sarah’s life. Jerome started his own nursing home, Milder Manor in Lincoln, Nebraska, and Frances ran the bridal department at Kilpatrick’s, which later became Younkers. “A big memory of mine growing up is when my grandmother would take me shopping and then out to lunch,” Sarah said. Pearl Gross, Roselle Pizer, and Evvie Rice complete the four sisters, and to honor each of them, Sarah adorned each dressing room door with their individual photos, and a wall-size, black and white photo of the four of them behind the front desk. “It’s like they’re with me in the store every day, and people love coming in to see their photographs,” she said. Sarah’s parents are also involved in the boutique, with her mom helping do tailoring and her dad consulting on financial

matters. “I wanted to prove to them I could do this, and they’re very proud of me,” she added. As they should be. Open for just two years, and Four Sisters already has 41,000 followers on Instagram. With trendy rompers and casual knit tops, much of the clothing appeals toward high-school and college-aged girls, but they also have stylish sweaters, floral kimonos, and moto pants for moms shopping with their daughters. “I knew I wanted the clothing to be contemporary but also extremely affordable,” Sarah explained. In fact, most items in the store are priced below $70. “I wanted to bring the sweet charm of the South to the Midwest with a classic touch,” she added. The store takes full advantage of social media, posting items on Instagram, Twitter, and Facebook, which Sarah and her employees keep up with every day. “Customer service is what I emphasize most, and social media is a big part of that,” she said. It’s also a way to interact with customers both before they come into the store and afterward. “I like asking customers their opinion on items,
and I love seeing my employees’ ideas on what to post on social media.” In addition to clothing, Four Sisters carries gift items such as coffee mugs, S’well water bottles, art prints, as well as jewelry and other accessories. She keeps the store bright, airy, and constantly rearranges items to keep the store looking fresh. “Some mornings I’m here at 6:30am straightening racks and restocking the entire store,” she said. “I love working in the store and being involved out front.” Sarah is a true local small business success story and said she’s passionate about what she does, the people she works with, and the community she’s in. “Supporting small business is so important. I didn’t go into this to become huge, but to offer something local and affordable for Omaha. Coming here is about that total experience. I want people to come in, be inspired by the pretty things that surround them, and leave happy. By the time people leave Four Sisters, they should have a little taste of the real four sisters: fashionable dames who knew how to walk into a room with confidence.”

The “write” plan a column on estate and financial planning for everyone By LISA M. LEHAN, J.D.
Some couples spend many months making plans for their wedding. Aside from all of the details you’ll consider for the big day, there are some important estate planning-related discussions that you should have both before and after you say “I do.” This is the first part of a six-part series examining estate planning needs that coincide with life’s milestones.
ABOUT THE AUTHOR Outside of the office, I enjoy spending time with my husband and our three children. For help with your family’s estate planning needs, please contact me directly at 402.343.3881.

First, long before the wedding ceremony, you need to consider whether a premarital agreement is right for you. Often, people think of premarital agreements in the context of divorce. However, they are also used to detail a couple’s wishes regarding the distribution of property at death. This is particularly important if one or both spouses have children from a prior relationship and want to assure their children will receive a specific portion of their estate. Without an agreement in place prior to the marriage, state laws may not allow you to leave as much of your estate to your children as you desire. Premarital agreements take time to prepare and execute. Each individual needs separate legal counsel and must assure they fully disclose all assets and liabilities to their fiancé. After the wedding, as a newly married couple, you’ll need to sign updated estate plan documents to include each other. You will want to assure your documents meet your objectives in providing for your spouse financially, and if you did execute a premarital agreement, your estate plan documents will need to comply with your agreement. In addition, you will likely want to give your spouse the legal authority to act on your behalf for financial and medical matters by naming them as your agent in your financial
and health care powers of attorney. Your spouse may also be the person you desire to serve as your successor trustee in your revocable trust and your personal representative in your will. All of these legal issues need to be documented properly. A comprehensive review of your assets should also be on the agenda after your wedding. Perhaps you will purchase a new home together, or you may need to secure additional life insurance coverage. The way you title your home, bank accounts, and other joint assets needs to be addressed. Careful consideration also needs to be given to the beneficiary designations on life insurance policies and qualified retirement accounts, which have special spousal benefit and waiver rules. An experienced attorney will guide you through each of these issues so you may focus on building your new life together.

Chariots 4 Hope provides a second chance at life
n 2014 Melissa Gatus found herself in trouble. The kind of trouble that could have landed her in jail. But after receiving help through the Open Door Mission and getting her life back together, she was referred to an organization that could take her even further— literally. Chariots 4 Hope is a local non-profit that restores donated cars and provides them to lowcome individuals and families, giving them a chance to become self-reliant in a way that is critical to their well-being.

Kelly O’Connor and Chariots 4 Hope co-founder Michelle Hurt
Started by Michelle and Jason Hurt, the story of how Chariots 4 Hope began is just as inspiring as the stories of those they help. After a long career in the insurance industry, Jason decided it was time for a change, and he and Michelle launched into a new career as small business owners. They had an opportunity to buy a Christian Brothers Automotive franchise and moved from the East Coast to Omaha. As a couple of faith, they started their Chariots 4 Hope ministry and gave away their first car in 2014. With such a strong need for transportation among low-income families in Omaha, the organization grew quickly. By the fall of 2015, the Hurt’s knew they wanted to sell the franchise and devote all of their time to Chariots 4 Hope. “We reached out to Christian Brothers 38 |

and told them our hearts weren’t in the business anymore,” Michelle said. What at first looked like was going to be a big loss turned into an act of grace. “Two months later they told us they were in support of our mission, took over the franchise, and let us walk away debt free. We left in November of 2015 without a paycheck, just our faith.” Running the organization from their dining room table, Jason and Michelle established a Board of Directors and partnerships with a dozen other local non-profits such as Open Door Mission and Bethlehem House that refer candidates to their program. There is also certain criteria the candidates must meet in order to be considered. They must have been in a partnering organization’s program for at least six months, provide a budget for
maintaining a car, and provide proof of car insurance. Once they receive the vehicle, they are also required to participate in Chariots’ after care program for six months, which includes classes on money management, car care, and mentorship. Each month the candidates attend class, Chariots will extend the warranty another month they provide on the car. In just two years, Chariots 4 Hope has grown from giving away one car in 2014 to giving away 35 cars in 2016. And each car they give is celebrated with a “Blessing” event, often to the surprise of the recipient. Kelly O’Connor, who was part of Bethlehem House’s program, recently received a car just five days after having her first child. “It was a total surprise,” she said during her Blessing. “I’m so thankful to be in this

program. I can start applying for jobs and no longer have to walk everywhere.” Jason said he was impressed with Kelly right away. “She was so detailed with her budget and determined to make it work.” Car donations are critical to the organization, and Chariots accepts everything, whether it’s drivable or not. Once the car is restored, the donor can get full cash value of the car for a tax write-off. So a car that would normally go for $500 at auction can be restored to a value of $2500 for example. Chariots also partners with local companies, such as Intertech Collision for body work, Owners Pride for detailing, and Safelite Auto Glass for glass repair. “The automotive industry here locally has been wonderful to work with and so encouraging for us to see,” Michelle said. Other local companies also have opportunities to get involved. Chariots’ Jumpstart program allows a business to sponsor a family by donating money toward car repair and then host the Blessing at their location. Chariots will also be hosting its first annual golf event on June 1st, 2017, at Tiburon, and sponsorship opportunities are available for that as well. And with growth comes the need for more space, so they are currently looking for a location that can house offices, a repair shop, and classrooms. With 21,000 low-income households without cars in Omaha, and 70% of entry-level jobs that are unreachable via transit, the need for Chariots 4 Hope is greater than ever. But Michelle explained that what they’re providing

is way more than just a car. “It’s a way to stop the cycle of poverty and instantly expand their world,” she said. “Removing the transportation barrier is such a huge step and is often an overwhelming reality for these families.” Michelle and Jason also continue to mentor and help the individuals and families even outside the aftercare program. “We’re partners with them, want to help them, and share our lives with them,” Michelle said. For the recipients, that means even more than the car itself. “I feel so humbled and grateful for Jason and Michelle,” Melissa said. “They’ve shown me that no matter where you’re at in life, there’s always hope.” For more information on Chariots 4 Hope, including donating a car, visit chariots4hope.org, or follow their journey on Facebook.

Three things women should know when buying a handgun By TIM PIRRUCCELLO, 88 Tactical Instructor
ADVICE FROM THE EXPERTS AT
44 |
EDGE
A
s 88 Tactical’s Concealed Carry (CCW) Program Director, I get a lot of requests for firearm recommendations. One frequently asked questions is, “What type of pistol do you recommend for women?” Here are the three things you need to know: 1. Size matters. Do not choose the smallest one you see because you are petite or have small hands. It’s not that simple. Most people assume that small guns are easier to handle, but that’s not the case. Many customers purchase a sub-compact (small) pistol as their first gun and end up regretting it. Why? Smaller pistols are more difficult to shoot because they have more felt recoil than a largeframe pistol. Also, learning basic marksmanship is substantially easier on a large pistol. The bigger frame allows for a proper grip, and a larger sight radius (longer distance between sights) increases accuracy. It’s important to balance size and concealment. Carrying a full-frame pistol on your body is often unrealistic, but carrying it in your purse is an
option. If you choose to carry on your body, a compact pistol is much more practical. 2. Stick to a manageable caliber. Many customers also believe that using a large-caliber round can stop a threat with one shot. The police regularly report that when an assailant is shot with one round, there is little to no effect. The best way to stop a threat is for the pistol handler to put multiple rounds into the upper-thoracic region of the assailant’s body. When it comes to caliber, I recommend 9mm handguns. This is a reasonably manageable round, and is less expensive to shoot, which leads to more training. In 88 Tactical’s Intro to Handgun, CCW, and Handgun Level 1 classes, the other instructors and I focus on teaching students the fundamentals, which include how to properly and safely handle your firearm and how to utilize it for self-defense. 3. Test it out before you commit. The best way to find the right firearm is to come into the store. Figure out which type of pistol fits your hand best, and test it on the range before making your decision. At 88 Tactical’s Range & Readiness Center, we have a large selection of rental handguns to choose from. Don’t be afraid to take your time, you may make multiple trips to the gun store and range before you find the right pistol. For more information on 88 Tactical’s handgun and other training courses, visit 88tactical.com.

Originally from Austria, Andreas completed three apprenticeships as a chef, butcher, and pastry chef. He traveled extensively throughout Europe as a chef, working in Russia, Sweden, Turkey, and Egypt. He also served as Executive Chef for both Norwegian and Royal Caribbean Cruise Lines. Eventually he made his way to the U.S., first in New York City and later across the country at places such as the Broadmoor Hotel in Colorado Springs and the Camelback Marriott in Phoenix. He was asked to join Pinnacle Entertainment and worked for a number of properties. He came to Ameristar more than two years ago, overseeing all of its restaurants, including Riva. Ameristar previously included a larger steak restaurant, but Andreas said they wanted a more intimate, upscale experience. He incorporates farm to table items, and brings in fresh seafood, such as shrimp from the Carolinas, fresh lobster from Maine, and Northwest wild caught salmon, which they smoke tableside in a hickory-infused glass dome. The menu, which is updated monthly, also includes aged USDA top choice steaks that are either char-grilled or cast iron seared. Burgundy braised beef short ribs, a fried bone-in pork chop, and pan seared duck are also available. Andreas said they don’t try to be overly adventurous with the menu, but rather prepare familiar food exceptionally well. “You can get a pork chop many places, but you can’t get it with the made-to-order fresh orange cranberry sauce that we serve with it,” he said. Another example is the shrimp cocktail, which is cooked using the sous vide water oven method to ensure freshness through a controlled temperature. Pasta is always made fresh to order, and the dressing used on the Caesar salad served in a parmigiano reggiano crisp shell is a recipe that Andreas personally created. He’s also used his grandmother’s artisan bread recipe before. Even the desserts have a twist, such

as the Crème Brule that is served as three separate flavors: vanilla, pistachio, and coffee. Other touches that set Riva apart are the individual drip coffee served at the table, the sealed menus printed in-house for each guest, the cocktail menu housed within an old-fashioned book at each table, and the wine list, which is printed on wine bottles. “Since we print everything ourselves, we can update the menu and wine list as often as needed, that way we keep everything fresh,” Andreas said. The wine list offers a variety of domestic and international wines, some that will be familiar to customers and others that might appeal to those looking for a new or different option. Reservations are recommended, and the restaurant is available to small groups/parties. With its Four Diamond rating, Andreas said Ameristar makes a great overnight getaway that’s close to Omaha. “We have so much more than just gambling here,” he said. “There’s so much to offer, whether it’s entertainment, casual or sports bar dining, breakfast, lunch, and upscale dining. Riva is worth the short drive just to experience something done differently and done really well.”

Omaha Wellness Center helps you make the choice to achieve health
e
at well. Move well. Think well. These are the three pillars that Omaha Wellness Center uses to help patients make the conscious decision toward living a healthier lifestyle. It’s a concept that Dr. Ryan Goss, who’s had his own private chiropractic practice since 2005, became interested in five years ago. He completed his lifestyle wellness certification and incorporated it into his practice. Formerly Clocktower Chiropractic, Dr. Goss moved his office into a larger location a few doors down and renamed it Omaha Wellness Center to better reflect whole body wellness.

“It’s a patient-centered model of care,” Dr. Goss explained. He can do a lot to help improve a patient’s movement and function, but once they leave his office they need to make healthier choices in their daily lives. Although it’s something most people know they need to do, it’s often difficult to implement. So Dr. Goss wants to educate patients on what it means to make healthier lifestyle choices, and then give them resources to help them follow through. The “eat well” component comes first, and Dr. Goss helps patients understand the types of foods they should be consuming versus the types of foods they should avoid. He also educates on what should be supplemented, such as vitamin D and probiotics, and what can be consumed naturally through food. “Most of what we need can be obtained simply through a well-rounded diet,” he said. “Most people don’t need to take a lot of extra vitamins.” The “move well” piece involves making sure the body is functioning at an optimal level, which he improves through chiropractic care to ensure the nervous system is healthy. Once that’s achieved, then patients need to make sure they are moving and meeting daily exercise requirements. “Sitting still is the new smoking,” he explained. “Movement affects overall physiology, and isn’t just a vessel for weight loss. It affects every other system, including digestion, and is critical to a healthy lifestyle.” The third component, “think well,” is where Dr. Goss has recently invested a lot of his time because he says mental health is the most important part. If the
first two elements are being met, then it allows people to achieve a peace of mind, which allows for happiness, joy, and fulfillment. “Finding clarity helps people make good decisions, and everyone’s goal ultimately is to be happy,” he said. “If we eat well and move well, then we can be emotionally well.” Unfortunately, one of the barriers to achieving overall wellness is believing that health is dictated by genetics or environment and is out of our control. But there are many examples of people who have reversed states of disease. “My dad survived a heart attack at age 48, which really impacted me,” Dr. Goss said. “But even though heart disease runs in the family, I wanted to do whatever it would take to defy the odds so it wouldn’t happen to me.” To help patients achieve all three pillars of health, Dr. Goss partners with other health and wellness professionals, such as dieticians, personal trainers, massage therapists, and counselors. He provides free consultations for anyone exploring their options in healthcare. If there is a possibility he can help, then Dr. Goss performs testing, which includes a physical examination, health risk assessment, and X-rays for all new patients. He also offers an online 90-day wellness program and does corporate lunch and learns and dinners talks to help raise awareness for people about his approach and what he offers. “Your lifestyle choices play the biggest role in determining your level of health,” he said. “Once people discover that, they become empowered. That’s the difference that I try to bring.”

Even with a shortened life expectancy (average age is 33) Cale is fulfilling his dream and living every day to its fullest. His parents, Britteny and Justin Ferrin, decided early on to support his natural talent. And the minute you meet Cale, you’ll know why acting and making people smile is what he was born to do. Edge: How did Cale first get into acting? Britteny: Three years ago we heard a radio commercial for an open call by a talent scout agency. I was hesitant to have Cale do it, but he was adamant that he wanted to try. We practiced a script and waited with 400 other

Cale: My first acting job was on Nickelodeon’s Nicky, Ricky, Dicky & Dawn. It was amazing meeting those actors. I was on the superhero episode. My favorite line I had was “That’s flying Goggle Boy!” Edge: What have been some of your other roles? I got to just dance and have fun in the music video, and Omaha Fashion Week was awesome. Commercials are the best because I don’t have to memorize lines. Britteny: I think if someone wrote a script specifically for Cale that would be perfect for him. He’s such a complex package. He’s good at everything he tries, he’s passionate about friends and family but also protective of his feelings. I think the best thing about Cale is he’s got the biggest heart despite everything he goes through, whether medical or social. He has to fight every day, even though he doesn’t look at it that way. Cale: (leans in toward Britteny and whispers) I love you Mom. Britteny: (Britteny hugs him and smiles) His purpose in acting in this world is to share his experience and let people know that even if you have a terminal illness, he can still raise awareness and still live a full life.
