I’m sure
many other parents have the same feelings as I do this month: Back to school!! YES! My kids going back to school creates happiness in many ways. Not only is this a step forward in their quest for education, but it brings a schedule back to my family.
REACH US We want to hear from you. Ideas, suggestions, compliments and critiques, send them to us at Carole@EdgeMagazine.com
My boys are entering 6th, 3rd, and 1st grades. This summer has brought a great deal of excitement for me both personally and professionally. My husband has spent his free time taking flying lessons, my sister is due with my second nephew, and I watched a great friend of mine get married. Edge is going through some changes too. Just in time for school, Varsity Corner is back! Edge is getting bigger and going further. I took a step outside my comfort zone this issue to write my first feature story on local children’s book authors. I do hope you find time to read this article that is very near and dear to my heart. Then I hope you pick of one of the great books written by Phil, Kathy, and Bruce and read with a child. For me, reading is synonymous with school, and there’s no greater gift you can give a child than the gift of reading! Favorite back to school memories: Kathy Rygg, Managing Editor: Buying school supplies! Not only was it one of the best parts of going back to school when I was growing up, but my kids love it as well. Trapper Keepers are even popular again! Chris Tierney, Photographer: On my first day of school I remember my mother walking me up as I nervously held her hand and she bent down and quoted a Dr Suess line to me, “ You’re off to great places. Today is your first day!

Your mountain is waiting, so get on your way.” I’ll be here waiting for you when you are done today. If I had to say what is the worse thing about the first day of school it would be finding a good seat. Quentin Lueninghoener, Designer: I ran cross country in high school. While I wasn’t any good, I still have fond memories of practice starting up a week before classes started in the fall. Carole Sprunk, Owner/Publisher

f you live in West Omaha, you’re probably familiar with the home on the northeast corner of 192nd and Harrison Streets that was once Sunny Slope School. The two-building home connected by a spectacular courtyard has a history as rich and unique as the stunning décor that sets it apart from any in the area. And although the buildings are modest in size at 1,500 sq. ft. each, both provide an inviting warmth that simultaneously relaxes and inspires you.

Homeowners Randy Shoults and Kelly Wirges Shoults have always made home design a hobby but really wanted this to be a showcase house. When Kelly first purchased the 1930s school building in 2001, she had intended to use it as office space. She told her father, Bill Wirges, President of Wirges Homes, that she’d like to find an old building. “He said he knew just the place,” Kelly reminisced. Surrounded by nothing but fields at the time, she and Randy began the first of several renovations, turning an old, brick school building into a stately home office with additional living space. One of the first surprises when re-facing the exterior was finding the original Sunny Slope School sign underneath. “We had to keep it, so we incorporat-

ed it into the landscaping behind the building,” Kelly said. They also retained the hardwood floors and wood-burning stove on the main floor, which they use throughout the winter months. A kitchenette and bathroom are also located on the main floor. The lower level serves as a guest suite complete with a full bath, additional half bath, and walk-in closets. In 2010 the couple decided to add a courtyard next to the school house, which they also designed themselves. A large fountain sits in the center surrounded by 600 flowers, 90 trees that are lit at night, and 90 bushes, all of which the Shoults’ planted themselves. “We spend so much time outdoors, whether it’s drinking coffee in the morning, having a glass of wine in the evening, or entertaining friends,” Kelly said. Large statues and planters accentuate the detailed courtyard, which is sunken between the two buildings for complete privacy. Three years later Randy and Kelly decided to add on to the property again, this time designing the main house. “We had both lived in large homes before, and we decided this house would be small in size, but large in design,” Randy said. Working with Matt Caniglia of Silverthorn Custom Homes as the general contractor, the empty nesters built a one-bedroom home that gives them all the space they need to enjoy its amenities, guests, and each other. “We prefer to have something smaller and beautiful,” Randy said. “We use every inch of space and don’t need any more.” That space, which the Shoults’ named “Chateau De La Mirabelle” (which means beautiful, bright star) is an elegant, eclectic mix of old-world European wall treatments, American antique furniture, and modern original artwork. black, and gold color palette throughout the home fills it with an unmatched warmth. Randy and Kelly wanted it to be the type of home where “everywhere you look, something grabs your attention.” That includes features such as 18 chandeliers throughout; Lincrusta textured wallpaper, which was used in the White House and in state rooms on the Titanic; 10-inch crown moulding around the 18ft. metallic gold-painted ceilings; and the door pulls in-laid with Swarovski crystals on the “Randy Gold” painted kitchen cabinets. Although both Kelly and Randy love every aspect of the home, Kelly said she has a special connection to the schoolhouse since it was a labor of love that her late father was involved in. Selling the home was a difficult decision, but Randy and Kelly said they are ready for their next adventure. “This home has been our canvas and was like working on a masterpiece,” Randy said. Kelly added that she hopes the new owners love it and enjoy it just as much as they have. “We could never duplicate it,” she said. “This home is priceless to us.” For more information, contact Jill Harris with Jackson Group Real Estate, 402-598-9121, jill.lewisharris@bhhsamb.com.

Thinking outside the box Story by MICHELE HYBNER, & SHAWN FALCONE, Owners/Interior Designers
Ever thought of utilizing oil can lids as an art installation in a stair well or a marching drum as an end table in your family room? Embracing a passion such as music, visually, is easier than one might expect. Thinking outside the box is a clever way to produce statement making pieces for your home. Unpredictable uses of ordinary items which reflect your unique personality are quite memorable plus they make great conversation starters Built environments should tell the visual stories of those who live and work within them – be sure to tell yours. Think of it as a game of connecting the dots between all the things which add value and meaning to your life – you are the big picture! Here is another easy example. Love to read? However, avid readers appreciate extra storage for books in many spaces in their homes particularly quiet cozy areas like a bedroom. Elkhorn Training Camp provides a premier facility for West Omaha athletes

thletics in West Omaha have grown at such a rapid rate, indoor training space had become nearly impossible to find. Local entrepreneurs Mike Alessandro and Max Fearnow not only recognized the problem and decided to find space for an indoor facility in West Omaha, but they went a step further and invested in building a state-of-the-art facility from the ground up—and did it in less than five months.

A graduate of Westside High School, Max played baseball for Stanford University when they made an appearance at the College World Series in 2008. Following college, he developed his own training program for pitching and hitting, working with up to 150 kids at various facilities around town. One of those athletes was Mike’s son. Max had been thinking of starting his own training facility and asked Mike if he would be interested in investing. “Mike paused, thought about it for a minute, then said he’d be interested,” Max explained. Mike’s interest in investing in the idea stemmed from his desire to be able to combine his passion for sports with business. And his career in technology leadership roles brought a skill set that
complimented Max’s talent for coaching and operating a training facility. “We’re not just two guys who like sports,” Max said. “We have two different mind sets that work really well together.” Once they decided to partner in their new venture, things moved quickly. Max focused on the operational side of getting the business up and running with Mike providing strategic ideas on how to market the idea. The initial intent was to find about 10,000 sq. ft. of space to rent, which quickly increased to 15,000 sq. ft. But after establishing a partnership with the Elkhorn Athletic Association, all of a sudden they had a larger number of sports and athletes they needed to be able to accommodate. “We needed

even more space, so we decided to build it,” Mike said. The result was a 34,000 sq. ft. facility right in the heart of Elkhorn. Thanks to their financial partner, Union Bank & Trust, and general contractor Advance Design & Construction, Elkhorn Training Camp (ETC) broke ground on Labor Day of 2016 and was able to open its doors January 8th, 2017. And the response has been incredible. In addition to their partnership with Elkhorn Athletic Association, Mike and Max have also partnered with Elkhorn Soccer Club to provide outdoor turf training space, and has a partnership with the Xplosive Edge, which has a dedicated weight room within Elkhorn Training Camp for conditioning classes. “Virtually every sports family in Elkhorn has a child who comes through this facility,” Max said. And it’s not just baseball, softball, and soccer players. Athletes of any age and gender are able to develop their sport through the classes and training offered at ETC. In addition to its 26,000 sq. ft. lighted outdoor turf area, the indoor space features four quads, 70x70 each; 25-ft. high ceilings; four Iron Mike pitching machines; seven hitting tunnels; high grade netting; Hammer Strength weight equipment; and a state-of-the-art radar gun. The co-owners also invested in operations technology, and incorporated an app that allows members to schedule their own training time, or book time in a hitting cage. “We want everyone to have a phenomenal user experience,” Mike said. That experience includes receiving training from some of the top instructors in athletics, such as former Creighton baseball player and area high school coach Peyton Lewis; former UNL baseball player Jeff Liese, and The Xplosive Edge owner Gibbie Duval, whose father was one of Tom Osborne’s assistant coaches. “We genuinely want to help kids improve in their sport, but it’s also about improving their self-confidence overall,” Max said. Part of Max’s passion for helping kids train comes from his own experience as an athlete. When his Stanford baseball team made it to the CWS, Max didn’t get the opportunity to pitch in his hometown in front of friends and family, which he said had a profound effect on him. “That’s something I regret,” he said. “I always wish I would have trained more and worked a little harder. I understand now the value of going the extra mile, and I want to help other kids get there.” Having a premier facility conveniently located in West Omaha, combined with top notch instructors is only part of the equation. Mike said he wants parents to know that their kids are going to be treated well,

That philosophy is shared by other organizations, including Elkhorn Soccer Club. “Our partnership with Elkhorn Training Camp for the use of their outdoor turf field has allowed us to provide an amazing learning environment for our children, primarily in our 5U-8U program,” said Rob Herringer, Executive Director of ESC. “ETC properly reflects our mission of ‘Developing a Culture of Excellence’, and we are thrilled with the positive impact it has had on our players, coaches and families.” As West Omaha continues to grow, Mike and Max want families to know that Elkhorn Training Camp is positioned to be the community’s partner in growing and developing all young athletes to perform their best, on and off the field. Elkhorn Optimist Club provides kids a way to give back
PROMISE YOURSELF To be so strong that nothing can disturb your peace of mind. To talk health, happiness and prosperity to every person you meet. To make all your friends feel that there is something in them. The first three lines of the Optimist International creed embodies what optimist clubs around the world set out to achieve, which is to bring out the best in children, their communities, and in themselves. Just a year ago, two West Omaha residents, Andrea Abrahamson and Jason Gustafson, revitalized the mission in Elkhorn, starting the Elkhorn Optimist Club.

OUR hearts Andrea and Jason were approached by members of other local Optimist chapters, and even though they weren’t familiar with the organization, they both quickly agreed to come on board. “I’m very youth oriented, and I wanted to create volunteer opportunities right in Elkhorn that my kids could do so they could feel like they’re helping take care of their community,” Andrea said. Having grown up in a small town, Jason wanted to also create opportunities for kids to have community-wide sports events. “We were in a unique position to really make this organization what we thought would best benefit the Elkhorn community,” he said. The two recruited friends and colleagues to join the new chapter and started considering the first projects to implement. Their goal is to be a group of “working hands” that allow the community to excel in kindness and community. “If we can fundraise to help someone’s idea come to life, or bring opportunities for families to come together in service of our community, that is what we are all about,” Andrea said. One of the first ones they brought was a punt, pass, kick event, which are held by chapters across the country. More than 120 kids participated locally, and one of the contestants, a 12-year-old girl, made it to both the state and regional competitions. Volunteers scored each contestant’s punt, pass, and kick, then turned them in for a ranking. “All of the Nebraska Optimist chapters are going to participate across the state this year,” Jason added. This year’s event will be held in September at Elkhorn High School. The organization’s most recent project has been raising money to purchase a Buddy Bench for each Elkhorn elementary school. Buddy Benches have received national attention as a way to encourage kids to show caring and compassion for others. Last year, an Elkhorn family purchased one for Fire Ridge Elementary when their autistic son often found himself alone at recess. “We heard their story and decided we wanted to place one at all of the Elkhorn elementary schools,” Andrea said. “It’s not about placing a bench on a playground; it’s about providing a tangible tool that 36 |

can teach kids about inclusion, kindness, and community responsibility.” With buy-in from the Elkhorn Schools Foundation, Student Services, and school principals, the Elkhorn Optimist chapter started fundraising for the $5000 needed to buy the 11 Buddy Benches. They sold poinsettias at Christmas, had fundraiser nights with local restaurants, asked local businesses to donate, and held a breakfast the Elkhorn Eagles Club, where Grace Hanson (see Our Youth feature) sold her homemade cupcakes and donated all proceeds toward the Buddy Benches. They also have honored students of the month in which local schools identify kids who may not be recognized for typical achievements or have difficulties due to health or family issues, but whose spirits never waiver. They are recognized with an optimist creed plaque and awarded a free pizza from Sam & Louie’s. The Elkhorn Optimist Club currently has 14 members and is actively looking for more members. They are also always looking for ideas for their next project. “Our vision for the chapter is to have representatives from all school-aged families, with everyone working together to make passion projects comes to life,” Andrea said. “Elkhorn is a strong community, and if we teach each other to prioritize to take care of each other, it will lead to a more

Learn how to recognize and treat different levels of heat emergencies By SHAWN WHITTINGTON, Senior instructor
ADVICE FROM THE EXPERTS AT

EDGE
As an EMS worker and instructor at both indoor and outdoor training facilities, I have seen countless cases of heat emergencies. When the temperature outside starts to soar, keep a few things in mind while doing yard work, exercise or other outdoor activities to avoid becoming a casualty of the extreme heat and humidity. Stay hydrated before and during outdoor activities. Drink two cups of fluid two hours before heading outside, and try to drink one cup of fluid every 20 minutes during outdoor activities. Supplement your water intake with a sports drink if you are outside for more than an hour. Sports drinks provide carbohydrates for energy and minerals to replace electrolytes lost in your sweat. Covering your head and neck can make a noticeable difference in how you feel in the heat. Wear a hat and lay a towel or bandanna across the back of your neck. There are three levels of heat emergencies: Heat cramps, heat exhaustion and heat stroke. Knowing the signs and symptoms can help you or someone around you. Heat Cramps: Painful, involuntary muscle spasms. Muscles most often affected include calves, arms, the abdominal wall and back. If you experience heat cramps, rest and cool down. Drink clear juice or a sports drink. Stretching and gently massaging the affected muscles will help. Heat Exhaustion: Symptoms of heat exhaustion
resemble those of shock and may include dizziness, nausea, heavy sweating, rapid heartbeat, cool or pale skin, heat cramps, headache and fatigue. If you suspect heat exhaustion, get the person to a shady or air-conditioned location right away. Lay the person down and remove excess clothing. Have them drink water or a sports drink and actively cool them by spraying or sponging them with water. Monitor carefully and call 9-1-1 if the person’s condition gets worse. Heat Stroke: Heat stroke occurs when your body temperature reaches 104 degrees Fahrenheit. At this point, emergency treatment is required. Heat stroke symptoms include lack of sweating, nausea and vomiting, flushed skin, rapid breathing, racing heart rate, headache, confusion and even unconsciousness. If you think a person may be experiencing heat stroke, call 9-1-1 and take immediate action to cool the person. Move them to a shaded location or indoors and remove excess clothing. Place ice packs or cold, wet towels on the person’s head, neck, armpits and groin and mist the person with water. Now that you know how to beat the heat, check out a full list of training courses at 88tactical.com. The U.S. will see the transfer of $6 trillion dollars over the next 30 years. If you receive an inheritance, you may have some questions about the estate administration process, the impact on your taxes, and whether you should make changes to your own estate plan. The process of wrapping up an estate involves collecting assets, paying liabilities and expenses, and distributing the remaining property to the beneficiaries. The person who is responsible for this process has a lot of work to complete and they will likely need to engage a team of advisors to assure everything is handled properly. A beneficiary usually has questions about the tax implications of receiving an inheritance. While your inheritance might be reduced by the federal estate tax depending upon the value of the decedent’s estate, and in Nebraska a county-level inheritance tax will likely also apply, the personal representative or trustee is the party responsible for preparing the returns and assuring the tax payments are made. There is a common misconception that a person who receives an inheritance must pay income tax on the property received. While a beneficiary does not pay income tax when receiving an inheritance, there are future income tax implications for the beneficiary due to a change in the “basis” of the inherited property. Under current law, you receive a “stepped-up basis” in inherited property, which means your basis will be equal to the fair market value of the property on the date of the decedent’s death. This concept is best explained by an example. If your father purchased a share of
stock for $100, his income tax basis in the stock is $100. If he sells the stock when it is worth $1,000, he will pay income tax on the total $900 the stock increased in value while he owned it. Compare the result if your father bequests the stock to you instead. If the stock is worth $1,000 when he passes away, your basis in the stock is “stepped-up” to $1,000. If you later sell the stock when it is worth $1,050, your taxable gain is only $50 – the amount the stock increased in value since the day your father died. If you have questions about whether inherited property is subject to your creditors or questions about the impact of an inheritance on your own estate planning decisions, or if going through the estate administration process makes you realize you want to simplify the process for your future beneficiaries, you should talk to an attorney knowledgeable about family, estate, and tax laws.

Local children’s book authors pursue their passion for kids

uild a Better Community.” These words are displayed all over Sump Memorial Library in Papillion. That is exactly what Omaha local authors Stacey and Phil Haussler, Kathy Rygg, and Bruce Arant are doing. Bruce Arant is the author and illustrator of Simpson’s Sheep Won’t go to Sleep. But Bruce hasn’t always been a book author. Illustrating books was always his passion. “I remember sitting at my drawing board in 1993 and thinking I didn’t want to grow old and never have tried illustrating books,” he said. “But there was no road map to get me here.” In need of an art portfolio, a book was created. Bruce admits that the first book idea came within three hours and from a design on a baby blanket. “After being rejected by many publishers, my agent sent a black and white copy to another publisher and that one got picked up,” he added. In 2014, Bruce won the Nebraska Book Award for best children’s book and best illustration, and was a Golden Sower nominee in 2015 and 2016. This fall Bruce’s second book Simpson’s Sheep Just Want to Sleep will be released, which he said was a labor of love. “I had 90 pages of drafts for a 530-word book.” Your brain is sometimes referred to as “your marbles,” and to ignite means

to spark. That is how Phil and Stacey Haussler created the name for their local publishing company, MarbleSpark. With titles that include Following Featherbottom; Twas the Mouse Who Saved Christmas; God Whispered Your Name and Every Hero Needs a Sidekick, these books all have something in common, in that they are all customized. When Phil and Stacey were expecting their first child they began to realize that a unique name spelling would make it hard to find personalized items. The idea of a personalized book evolved. Much more than name spellings, the couple’s books offer more than 240 variations, including a character’s hair and skin color and the places they visit throughout the story. Because each book is different, each order is printed on demand digitally. MarbleSpark’s most recent creation is Project OpenBook, a community created book that invites authors to submit stories, illustrations and poems. “Sort of a Shel Silvertstein meets Mosh Pit is often what comes to mind behind this book,” Stacey explained. Proceeds from this book are being given to charity as a way to give back to the community. Local author Kathy Rygg began writing children’s books when her son asked her to write one. “Writing has always been my passion, and my kids have been a great inspiration,” she said. Tall Tales with Mr. K and Taller Tales with Mr. K are chapter books for beginning readers; Animal Andy is for young middle graders; and her geocaching adventure series The Crystal Cache is for middle graders. All of Kathy’s books are magical realism because that was her favorite genre to read as a child. Published by Knowonder, Kathy’s books are also available in an easy to read DyslexiAssist format that uses special spacing and fonts to allow children who struggle with reading to still engage in the book. Each local author has a different approach to getting their name out there. Bruce visits schools and festivals. He is also involved in workshops with children. recognize their brand from the recent 2017 Cox Business Get Started Omaha competition where they were one of six finalists. Kathy’s geocaching books are featured at Groundspeak’s geocaching headquarters in Seattle and on the geocaching.com web site. Local bookstores such as The Bookworm are big supporters of local authors, often hosting book signings, which is one of the best ways to connect with them. “Interacting with the kids is the best part of writing,” Bruce said. And while each author admits there is a place for eBooks, the consensus is that there is nothing quite like a child holding a beautifully illustrated, engaging book. Stacey added, “There’s something magical about the bond made between a caregiver and a child when they read a book together.”

The time, effort, and risk involved in farming and producing are all great. But for most it’s a passion that keeps them going, especially during adverse times. Terra and Matt Hall who own Rhizosphere Farm in Missouri Valley met while working on an organic farm in Oregon, where the organic farm movement was in full force. Knowing they wanted to do it on their own, they decided to move back to the Midwest and try growing food in the prairie. They started in 2009 by renting half an acre of land in Waterloo, NE, and were surprised at how quickly their produce grew in popularity. Then in 2013 they purchased six acres of their own in Missouri Valley. “We’ve been farming here ever since, and it’s been incredible to have our own space,” Terra said. Their focus is on the “simple sale,” which means a majority of their income comes from the local Farmers Markets, working a seven-day loop from the end of April through September every year. Their stand is piled high with giant heads of lettuce, tomatoes, potatoes, kale, asparagus, herbs, and more. Although the fresh produce is slightly more expensive than at local grocery stores, Terra said consumers want food that has been harvested the day before versus having traveled on a truck for days. “There’s an inspiration with the customer base,” she said. “It’s hard work, but when there’s a line every week, it makes us want to continue doing it.” Kevin Loth with Shadow Brook Farm in Lincoln started with the organic farming movement in California, then moved to Lincoln in 1995 to start his own operation with his wife. They began with fresh produce and later added a small herd of 15 dairy goats for their Dutch Girl Creamery cheese operation. Today, they have 150 dairy goats, which will increase to 200 next year, and produce a variety of European style artisan cheeses. Similar to Rhizosphere Farm, Shadow Brook makes a majority of sales at the

Farmers Markets. But they also sell directly to local restaurants as well as work with Lone Tree Foods, which connects local farmers with wholesale buyers. Dario’s Brasserie is a big supporter of local farmers and regularly purchases items from a number of local producers, including Shadow Brook Farm. The restaurant uses Shadow Brook’s cheese on its artisan cheese plate, the Dario’s Cheeseburger, and uses both their cheese and greens in its chicken salad. “Local vendors play a big role in our daily operation,” said Dario’s Chef Josh Essay. “There’s a huge advantage to using seasonal, high quality produce from surrounding farms. It’s better quality, has a longer shelf life, and often you’re getting it the day after being harvested.” Although more restaurants open each year that use locally-sourced food, and crowds continue to grow at the local Farmers Markets, it’s still a tough business. “We’ve seen a lot of people get into farming over the years who end up quitting because it’s so hard,” Terra said. “But we’re all trying to be more innovative and share with each other so that we can all be successful to help meet the needs of the growing food community.” Supporting local vendors is so important, and working directly with consumers and helping educate them is what both Terra and Kevin say they love most. “I enjoy it when customers get to know me, my family, and I get to know theirs,” Kevin said. “That direct connection is the best part of this business.”

ntrepreneurship often begins at an early age and with a simple idea. Baking cupcakes was an activity that eight-year-old Grace Hanson initially did for fun, but then she decided she wanted to sell them to friends and neighbors. With the help of her mother, Liz, who built a portable cupcake stand, Grace was able to turn her love of baking into Grace’s Big Bake Shop. And even though Grace was born with a rare form of dwarfism called campomelic dysplasia, which affects her airway and her spine, it doesn’t affect her spirit.

Edge: How did Grace come up with the idea to have her own cupcake stand? Liz: One of her nurses used to make wedding cakes, and she and Grace would make cupcakes for fun. Grace decided she wanted to sell them so we thought we’d make a stand and just put in our driveway, like a lemonade stand. We posted it on Grace’s Facebook page, and Andrea Abrahamson with the Elkhorn Optimist Club saw it and contacted us. She asked if Grace would like to sell cupcakes at their event to raise funds for the Buddy Benches at Elkhorn elementary schools. Grace agreed and decided we needed to make a sign for the stand, so she named it “Grace’s Big Bake Shop.” Edge: How did it go at the fundraising event? Liz: Great! She spent hours making cupcakes and cookies for the event and ended up selling out! Grace also decided to donate the money she made to the Elkhorn Optimist Club to go toward the Buddy Benches. She liked the idea of contributing to others. Edge: Grace, what do you like best 66 |

Grace: I like to play games on my iPad, watch You Tube, and I like funny movies. Minions is one of my favorites. And I love Disney princesses. Liz: We’re going to Disney World for Grace’s Make-A-Wish trip this summer. We wanted her to be old enough to remember it, and she and her brothers, (Cole and Landon) have never been on a plane before. Edge: What are you looking forward to most when you go to Disney World? Grace: I can’t wait to see Princess Elena! Liz: It’s great timing because Grace is doing so well right now. She’s had more than a dozen surgeries, her most recent was in February to repair rods that are helping to straighten her spine due to her severe kyphosis and scoliosis. Edge: That doesn’t seem to slow her down. She is full of energy! Liz: Grace is one of the most determined, strong, feisty people I know. When a kid has a long-term illness and that’s all they know, they learn to fight, and she always has a good attitude. Plus, she’s fearless. We took her tubing once and after that she begged us to water ski! But I am most proud of the fact that she’s so caring, loving, and thoughtful of others. Grace: And don’t forget that I love Justin Bieber! I want to marry him someday. Can you send him a copy of this article? Edge: We can certainly try.

Growing up in Sioux City, Iowa, before moving to Omaha in the fifth grade, Jordan played soccer on local YMCA leagues where her talents blossomed. She then turned her attention to the high school soccer teams at Elkhorn South. As a freshman, Jordan joined the school’s DECA and SADD organizations and took the school’s soccer club by storm. Playing her favorite position, right forward, she was the only freshman in her class to win a spot on the school’s Varsity team. In 17 games, Jordan scored six goals that year and lettered for her accomplishment. Then, just two weeks into the sophomore soccer season, Jordan found herself at a crossroads. The teen suffered an ACL injury that kept her out the remainder of the season. Initially disheartened, Jordan’s mother, Kori Vanderloo said Jordan quickly bounced back with a smile on her face. “Jorden knew this injury ‘wasn’t the end of life,’ and I knew Jordan would come back to the soccer fields stronger and better through hard work and rehab.” Jordan renews her soccer career this fall as a junior. As for college, Jordan said she is still undecided and uncommitted to Creighton or any others. Whether on the field or off, Jordan has learned from her experiences, and she advises her peers “to always be good teammates, encourage those around you, and know that hard work always pays off.”

EDGE
PAR FOR THE
COURSE Richard Orth III | Burke | Freshman by Andrew Gabriel Not many golfers can claim the achievement of more than 60 top three finishes since 2012 or 15 wins, with five second place finishes, in 2016 alone. Far fewer are fourteen-years-old like Richard Orth III. Richard, who will be a freshman at Burke High School come fall, has loved golf since he was just three-years-old. He has participated in dozens of tours and tournaments, making a name for himself on courses all over Nebraska. Richard still tries to make time for other activities in his life. Whenever possible, he likes to hang out with friends, play video games, and also likes to play basketball. He said that recreational basketball helps him to stay in shape and keeps him nimble out on the golf course. Richard remains humble when asked of his success. “My success has been pretty good. It’s just cool to be competitive.” With high school near, Richard knows that it will be even harder to juggle school with his golf career but that it will be worth it in the end. He points out that making time for both golf and school teaches him good time management. His father, Richard Jr., and mother, Dee Dee, both support their son’s golf career but have never pressured him to pursue it. “It’s just exciting to watch him grow and progress,” Richard’s father said. He explained that his son came to him and said, “Dad, this is my plan. This is what I want. I want golf in my life.” Though no plans have been made for after high school, Richard is determined to keep golf in his life, whether he attends college or tries to make it onto bigger tours. And he advises his peers to “definitely work hard and you’ll be amazed at what you can accomplish.”
