of hot chicken noodle soup in summer? Yes, please. My family and I are the newest members of West Omaha, and I couldn’t be more excited! So much so that I celebrated with chicken noodle soup. Last summer I shared that a quest in my small town for chicken noodle soup for my ill son had left me empty handed, because in a small town chicken soup is only a seasonal item. But here it’s available every day of the year! I truly love Omaha, and it has always been my goal to live here. The opportunity finally presented itself. Omaha is a magnificent place to call home, and I cannot wait to explore all it has to offer. Change is inevitable. Are your life and your assets ready for the next step? Farm Bureau is more than another company with the name “Farm” in it. There are local agents who want to engage and educate you throughout the process of insurance buying. With all the growth and transition happening in West Omaha, Lynbrook Apartments and Townhomes in Elkhorn is a fantastic option. Whether you need a place to live while building a home, or you want to try permanent, maintenance-free living, it’s a home option worth considering. A huge part of my love for Omaha has come from meeting so many incredible

any believe one of the components to living the “American Dream” is owning your own home. However, there are times when renting might be ideal. Perhaps a young couple is just starting out and saving to buy a house. Or an established family builds a home and needs interim housing. Sometimes people don’t want the upkeep of a home, but they can’t sacrifice square footage. For situations like these, there is an affordable, upscale option right in the heart of Elkhorn that can serve as either short or long-term living with numerous luxuries and amenities. Lynbrook Apartments and Townhomes off of Blondo Parkway between 192nd and 204th Streets offers 66 two and three-bedroom townhomes in both ranch and two-story floorplans. Each home has an attached two-car garage, finished walk-out lower level with patio, jetted tub in the master bath, included washer and dryer, built-in above stove microwave, refrigerator with ice maker, a deck that overlooks beautifully landscaped lawns and the protected wetlands of West

Owned by Edward Rose & Sons out of Kalamazoo, Michigan, the company began building single family homes in 1921. Four generations later, it now purchases, builds, and manages multi-family housing in 15 states across the Midwest. According to Scott Burns, Community Manager of Lynbrook Apartments and Townhomes, Edward Rose & Sons sets themselves apart by selecting land that can maintain its natural setting as well as putting residents first and providing the highest level of maintenance. Edward Rose owns a number of properties throughout the Omaha area, including Brentwood Park and Andover Pointe Apartments in La Vista, Colonial Pointe Apartments in Bellevue, West Hampton Park Apartments, adjacent to Lynbrook Apartments and Townhomes, and Trade Winds opening in Gretna this fall. They offer options for all lifestyles and budgets, from economical apartments to the more luxurious townhomes. “We have something for all different price points and needs,” Burns said. ago with all the space and amenities of a home (the three bedrooms are 2,100 sq. ft.) but with the maintenance-free convenience of apartment living. Utilities are separate from the rent, but lawn care, snow removal, and trash are all included. They have upgraded appliances, faux granite countertops, ceiling fans in the living room and master bedroom, walkin master closet, and spacious finished and unfinished basement space for storage. “With our townhomes being newer, we are able to have newer amenities, and the location is ideal,” Burns said. It’s close to downtown Elkhorn, is within the desirable Elkhorn School District, and has quick access to Dodge Street off both 192nd and 204th Streets. “The main advantage to living in a townhome over a traditional home is that you don’t have the added cost or time-consumption that goes along with maintaining a traditional 10 |

home,” Burns added. Lynbrook Office Manager Steven Risley said the amount of privacy that Lynbrook Ttownhomes offer is one of the most attractive aspects. The units are spread single-file along Blondo Parkway with no neighbors to the north or south, and unlike apartments, there are no neighbors above or below the units. “Each townhome looks out onto the wetlands that stretches the length of the property, which attracts deer and other wildlife,” Risley said. All of the buildings are either completely pet-free or pet-friendly to accommodate all lifestyles. Another aspect that Risley mentioned is the pride Edward Rose has in responding to resident requests, whether it’s a simple repair or more complex maintenance issue. “We are here to take care of you and all of your needs, and we’re a good option for many people,” he said. In fact, he encourages anyone to simply tour the townhomes, whether by appointment or walk-in. “We’re always here and eager to help make maintenance-free living a reality.”

Farm Bureau Financial Services protects people during tragedy

verybody needs insurance, but many people think all insurance is the same, or they think they only need the cheapest policy. Unfortunately, that couldn’t be further from the truth, and too often people end up with auto, home, or life insurance that doesn’t meet their needs, or they are underinsured and end up in a crisis in the event that tragedy strikes. The best way to guarantee that you’re appropriately covered is to work with a reputable insurance company and an agent who cares about you and your family.

Farm Bureau Financial Services has been taking care of people for nearly 80 years. Based in Des Moines, IA, the company was founded to provide insurance to Midwest farmers. Today, 4,000 agents help all people, operating as their own business owners but within an experienced team. Jay Miralles heads up one of the larger teams in Omaha, mentoring 30 agents. Once a well-known local radio DJ, Jay “Towers,” he entered the financial services industry 15 years ago after experiencing first-hand how devastating it can be on a family financially when a close friend of his suddenly passed away. “I wanted to be able to help someone during their darkest hour,” he said. After six years as an agent, Miralles was presented with the opportunity to be a field leader. “I couldn’t believe someone wanted me to become an agency manager, but they said, ‘Take what you do so well and replicate it so others can do it too,’” he said. “I fell in love with finding people who’ve never had a meaningful career or a good mentor and helping them realize it’s possible to have both.” Mentoring actually comes naturally for Miralles. Growing up he watched his dad help others at every turn, and he internalized that, now focusing on giving back regardless of whether or not it results in any kind of return. That desire to help others is a key attribute that all of his agents have in common. Jerry Wellwood grew up the oldest of three boys and considers himself the “big brother” who takes care of all his clients. “I’m the person they can lean on for their worst day,” he said. “I reassure them they’re in good hands, and I’m their immediate sounding board.” Agent Joe

Ramos, who was medically retired from the Air Force after suffering from a brain aneurism at age 29, prides himself on being his clients’ “go to guy,” a role he had as a navigator on the RC 135 while stationed at Offutt Air Force Base. “My military background taught me professionalism, integrity, and putting others first,” he said. Miralles admitted that being an insurance agent isn’t for everyone, but those who are the most successful are people who work hard and have a steel backbone. “This business isn’t easy; you have to be resilient. We’re told ‘no’ seven out of 10 times, but we keep working and giving back to the community.” That hard work is displayed through the numerous awards his district has won, although Miralles is quick to point out it’s not about the awards. “I’m most proud about our pay it forward culture and the way our agents help our clients, but also help each other,” he said. Each agent is an independent business owner, setting their own schedule and working toward their own goals. Agent Keia Jensen said she’s putting all of her time into growing her business now, so that she can have flexibility when she and her husband start a family. And much of what she does is simply educate people, especially younger families just starting out. “There are a lot of people who don’t understand what they’re paying for, and I want to help

them make the best decision possible,” she said. Agent Ken Mason is also an educator, having worked in multiple sales roles his entire career, including the auto industry. “I want to educate people so that mistakes don’t happen,” he said. “I give people lots of choices, and they have to live with their decision, but I have to live with whether or not they are happy.” The agents also want their clients to know they are available 24/7, providing their personal contact information to ensure they can be reached. “I was on vacation last year during the June storm and worked with my clients remotely who had issues as a result of it,” said agent Melissa McMurray. One key philosophy that Miralles lives by and stresses to all his agents is that no matter where you’re at in life, don’t stay in a situation you feel stuck in. “If you’re going to fail at something, don’t fail standing still,” he said. “This business isn’t for everyone, but if you’re a hard worker and love serving others, solving problems, and owning your own time, consider being an agent. And if you don’t understand your current insurance coverage or want to feel secure that your family is protected, consider working with one of our agents. It will be worth it.”

Prim Beauty Parlour combines vintage style with modern looks

a

t first glance, the striking brick building painted jet black in the middle of Main Street in Olde Town Elkhorn looks like its renovated 100-year-old neighbors. Even though Prim Beauty Parlour has only been there a few months, owner Jami Gragert meticulously picked out each fixture and piece of furniture to give the new salon and spa its clean, vintage feel for an ideal, open work space for the two dozen Beauty Artist business owners who rent space there.

Gragert knew she wanted to go to cosmetology school as young as 6th grade, having grown up reading her aunt’s cosmetology books. “I have a strong passion for creating beauty on people and in my surroundings,” she said. Gragert started working in salons at age 15, and has been involved in every facet of the industry, from selling salon products to working in a plastic surgeon’s office. At one point she rented her own space but wasn’t happy with the environment. “I wanted to open a place where we brought back an exceptional experience for both the business owner and the client,” she said. “I wanted to also support and inspire other beauty artists and help them build their businesses.” She found what she felt would be the perfect location in downtown Elkhorn and quickly purchased the empty lot along Main Street. “I love the sense of community downtown, our clients can walk next door and eat at one of the restaurants or pop into the shops after their service,” Gragert said. She purchased the lot five years ago, and two years later she and her husband and two daughters decided to sell their family home so they could focus on building out the salon, which took another two years. Gragert wrote the business plan, secured the financing, and designed every aspect of the building, collecting décor along the way that she kept in a storage unit. The result is a stunning, two-story space with an open floor plan for stylists on the main level and individual spa rooms on the upper level. “The ambiance and design was important to me,” Gragert said, adding that she wanted clients to feel like they were in a high-end salon and spa. Good Vibes,” Prim Beauty Parlour defines everything Gragert had dreamed it would be. All the way down to the lines of green beauty products she personally tried and curated for three years before bringing them into the salon. Building out the salon was a long process, but finding stylists to rent space came easily, especially once word got out about the opportunity and quickly spread. Stylist Lisa Lingenfelter and aesthetician Jan Gilsdorf were both taking breaks from their careers to stay home with kids when they found out about Prim. Both were hesitant to jump in and rent space but said it has been well worth the risk. “Everyone is so talented and willing to help each other grow,” Lingenfelter said. “It’s just inspiring, and you feed off the energy here.” Lingenfelter, who has 15 years experience, shares this passion with her mother whom is also a hair stylist. With that, Lingenfelter has been around the industry her entire life and believes that is what instilled the desire to be in this profession. “There is nothing more rewarding than making someone feel beautiful,” she said. Gilsdorf, who specializes in facials, dermaplaning, eyebrow waxing, and makeup application, was able to recruit other artists she knew and share space with them. She has visited hundreds of salons and spas around the country as a skin care trainer and said she recognizes a good thing when she sees it. “I was able to envision the space before it was done,” she said. “Prim is a dream space, and Jami is a dream boss to work with. Many of my clients are busy moms, so I know how important it is to have that full hour for yourself.” Being a mentor to other female business owners is also important to Gragert, and she wants to be an example to her daughters that hard work pays off and they too can be influential leaders. Her family has since moved back into a home, and Gragert said she’s so humbled at the sacrifices her husband and children made so she could go after her dream. “I’m so proud of what we’ve accomplished,” she said. “All of our artists and the visual allure here are authentic. We want everyone to feel comfortable and rejuvenated during and after a service. The experience at Prim is is what sets us apart and means everything to us.”

OUR style

living WELL

If the kitchen is the heart of the home, the great room is the brain. Often called a living room, or family room, these spaces have morphed over the last decades from a formal “show space,” to a livable mecca, where our kids do homework, we watch TV, eat meals, entertain family and friends, and host holidays. It’s our go-to space in our homes, and even though it has to be functional, it can still be beautiful. Engage the help of a professional designer to help you create a space that will wear well, playing the supporting role to your family’s lifestyle, all while being attractive. For our favorite room in the home, here are the latest trends in design that we have recently noted:

1

Hard wood floors – Hard wood floors are a beautiful way to add warmth and depth to a space. They are easy to care for, complimentary to upholstery, and provide a great backdrop for a spectacular area rug. Dramatic fireplace designs – Fireplaces are focal points, so it’s no wonder why we center space plans around them and pour so much of our efforts and resources into their design. Current designs incorporate natural stone, onyx, interesting shaped fireboxes, gas, wood burning, tiles, hearths and mantles…the options are endless and the trend is to go big in this area. Get creative and keep it unique! Interesting display cabinet options – While we are seeing a slight departure from the traditional

symmetrical built in cabinetry flanking a central fireplace, there are plenty of creative twists on the feature. Try furniture in their place to provide a flexible and unexpected option, or experiment with asymmetrical design options to compliment your fireplace focal wall. Window treatments – Window treatments have simplified over the recent years, but the one place we never scrimp on draperies is the great room. A true finishing touch, the difference in framing your view with dramatic drapery is a big one. Window treatments come in a variety of styles and countless fabrics…we specialize in custom window treatments and they honestly do more than just protect your furnishings from damaging sun

rays. They also make a nice space STUNNING. Amazing cocktail tables – Remember being told as a child not to put your feet on the coffee table? Well, they’re called cocktail tables now, and perhaps the name change is indicative of the piece’s incredible shift in sophistication. These pieces are central attention-getters in a great room, and they come in everything from live edge wood to metals, to glass, to acrylic, to a combination of woods and finishes. The possibilities are endless and the impact is enviable. Beams – Don’t forget to look up! Nothing brings drama to a space like a unique ceiling feature. Wood beams, wall covering, coffering…these elements keep your eye moving through the entire room, and complete the design, giving your space a truly unique feel. Whether you’re building your dream house, or renovating to create your ideal space, keep these trends in mind to create a gorgeous, functional, and lasting great room that will serve your family for years to come!

OUR wealth

The “write” plan a column on estate and financial planning for everyone By LISA M. LEHAN, J.D.

A Grantor Retained Annuity Trust is a planning tool that you may use to transfer assets to your beneficiaries with little, or possibly no, wealth transfer tax costs. The primary benefit of a GRAT is to freeze the value of the property transferred to the trust, so that the future appreciation is transferred in a tax-efficient manner. The best assets to use with this technique are those that you expect to appreciate significantly in value, such as securities, business interests, or real estate.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR About the author: I am a shareholder of Koley Jessen P.C., L.L.O., located in One Pacific Place. My practice is focused on estate and tax planning. Outside of the office, I enjoy spending time with my husband and our three children. A donor, called the grantor, creates a GRAT by transferring appreciating or income-producing assets to an irrevocable trust. The grantor retains the right to receive annuity payments from the trust during a stated term of years called the “fixed term.” The grantor’s annuity payments are based on an interest rate established by the IRS, known as the “Section 7520 rate.” At the end of the fixed term, the assets remaining in the trust pass to the beneficiaries of the trust, typically the grantor’s spouse and children. The grantor’s initial gift to the GRAT is a taxable gift. The amount of the gift is the fair market value of the property transferred minus the value of the grantor’s retained annuity interest. Many times, a zeroed-out GRAT is implemented in order to eliminate any gift tax at the time the trust is created. At the end of the fixed term, if the assets the grantor transferred into the GRAT have appreciated at a rate greater than the Section 7520 rate, the excess growth passes to the remainder beneficiaries and no federal gift or estate tax is due on the transfer. However, if the grantor dies

during the fixed term, the value of the GRAT assets are included in the grantor’s estate and may be subject to federal estate tax. To reduce this risk, the trust can be structured with a short fixed term, such as two or three years. The key to creating a successful GRAT is selecting assets that will outperform the Section 7520 rate. Timing can be extremely beneficial as well. Implementing a GRAT after a downturn in the market may allow you to capture the recovery within the GRAT and, if the return exceeds the Section 7520 rate, pass that return to your beneficiaries free of wealth transfer taxes.

Improving reading comprehension in kids By DR. STEPHEN STINN

Many kids struggle with reading comprehension, and parents often have a tough time finding a solution to help them. Most often, kids that have a reading comprehension problem have above average intelligence, but it’s an issue within their nerve system that’s at the root of the problem. Every child who has come into my office that has a reading comprehension problem, an eye tracking problem, or a combination of the two, has what is called an Asymmetric Tonic Neck Reflex (ATNR). It’s a primitive reflex, and its initial role is to provide feedback to the brain for the first 6-12 month of life. It’s the training wheels for your brain while everything is coming online, and once it has done its job, it’s supposed to go away. What happens is some kids retain it and hold onto it. It it is an inefficient thing to have once you’re past that first year of life, and it slows down your ability to do complex things like reading, writing, critical thinking, etc. When you retain this reflex, you have difficulty “crossing the midline.” Your eyes track from left to right and they should do so smoothly when reading. When you have an ATNR, every time you reach the midpoint of crossing from left to right, your eyes will make a slight jump. They might jump up a line, down a line, jump forward, or backwards. This is something you don’t consciously notice you’re doing, but as you can imagine, it makes reading comprehension a very tough task. Step 1: How do you test to see if your child still has this retained primitive reflex? We do primitive reflex assessments in the office or you can even search online for a simple tool to help test for it. Step 2: What do I do if my child does have this reflex? Once again, you can 36 |

EDGE

look up “ATNR remediation exercises” online. This can take up to 12 months to successfully remove the reflex. We can speed up the process by giving adjustments that specifically target the weak hemisphere of your child’s brain. From my experience, when combining

specific chiropractic and at-home primitive reflex exercises, these reflexes remediate in one or two months time. If you’d like to schedule an initial primitive reflex assessment and nerve system testing call our office at 402.504.4676. We’d be happy to answer any of your questions on the phone or over email: drstephen@ restorechiropracticcenter.com.

arm to table isn’t a new concept, but not all restaurants interpret it the same way. For Chef Owner Ben Maides at Au Courant in Benson, the idea of farm to table should be just that: sourcing the best local products that are in season and creating a menu around it. In fact, he’s so passionate about it, he changes the menu weekly to ensure they use items that are available and at their peak. The result has been a six-course chef’s tasting menu that is 95 percent locally sourced and at an approachable Midwest price—only $55—that when paired with the sommelier’s wine suggestion (for an additional charge), makes for a night out perfect for any occasion.

“We don’t tell the farmers what product we want, we see what they bring us and then work our menu around it,” Maides said. “It forces us to be creative.” For example, as onions grow and become bigger throughout a season they start to bloom. When that happens, Maides said they will incorporate the actual blossoms into a dish. Once a week he meets with local farmers to see what’s available, and then crafts the menu afterwards. “We literally cook whatever is coming out of the ground at the time,” he said. “We try to find an interesting and modern take on food.” The regular menu encompasses four categories: Amuse, Aperitif, Pasta, and Protein. All pasta is hand-made in house and artfully combined with those fresh, local ingredients. Protein is done the same way. For example, Maides likes using locally raised trout from Blue Valley Aquaculture in Sutton, NE, as well as custom raised chickens from Plum Creek Farms in Burchard, NE. A recent menu item included house made green chorizo sausage with local garlic scapes 46 |

The six-course chef’s tasting menu features items from the larger menu, as well as off-menu items, and Maides said at least half of the customers on any given night will order the tasting menu. It’s a concept he wasn’t sure would go over well but said he’s been pleasantly surprised at how it’s been received. “As much as I didn’t want to cook the same dishes all the time, I was worried about introducing this forward-thinking concept,” he said. “But people in Omaha are so open to it, and it’s getting people to the Benson area.” For those familiar with Benson, which continues to draw residents from all over town with its restaurants and entertainment venues, Au Courant is in the space that was formerly España. Mendez who was a server. Mendez eventually bought España, and Maides left Omaha to earn his culinary degree and train with chefs at restaurants around the world, including in Italy. After returning to Omaha, Mendez approached Maides a few years later about turning España into a new concept. This November, Au Courant will celebrate its second anniversary. In the last two years, the biggest surprise has been the popularity of the tasting menu. “When we first started, we thought people would just come in and have some fresh pasta and a beer, but we’ve really evolved past that and people have embraced the constantly rotating menu,” Maides said. The only dish that tends to reoccur is Spaghettini Bolognese, due to Maides’ time spent in Italy, which is where he learned to perfect it. “It’s my favorite to make and to eat,” he said. In fact, he’s very proud of the restaurant’s pasta program after the time he spent in Italy. But he also admitted he gets just as excited about creating all the dishes on each week’s menu. “If a dish isn’t the highest quality, it doesn’t go on the menu. So I’m proud of everything we do.”

aking new friends at any age can be challenging, but often even more so during adolescence. Even in our connected world, it is actually easier to feel disconnected and lonely. Three years ago, Cheri Dickmeyer felt compelled to hold a summer camp to empower girls through friendships and fitness. Having two teen daughters and a marketing/fitness background, she put together a summer camp in just 30 days. What started out as an idea for a single summer camp that brought in more than 60 young ladies traveling as far as Colorado has turned into FITGirl, Inc., a non-profit organization hosting two empowerment camps each year, a two-week summer camp, self-defense classes, and encouragement to form new friendships. “I had so many calls and emails telling me I needed to keep doing this,” Dickmeyer said. “We grew and tried new things.” The after-school program in Millard became a stepping stone to using the curriculum from the Women’s Sports Foundation. “Kosamahas been so generous to allow us to use their facility each week to work with girls on their curriculum,” she said. “Ortho Nebraska has also been a great partner. This year,

they are staffing the summer camp with four nurses each day to ensure the young ladies health and safety.” “I love that I get to make new friends and interact with other girls,” said Paris, an eleven-year-old student. Her mother, May, said her daughter loves the group of girls she’s with. “She was and still is a bit timid and shy. I want to empower her. Being a parent is already so hard, and this program really helps.” FITGirl, Inc., was chosen out of all applicants as a capstone program at the University of Nebraska Omaha to receive a mobile site. UNO selected FITGirl Inc., is the non-profit that they felt added the most value to the community. The website launch is expected in spring 2019, and this site will allow FITGirl Inc., to regularly interact with its empowerment class attendees. Through points, rewards and ongoing contact, FITGirl Inc., will be able to impact more young women during their most impressionable years. “We have a fantastic board in place and just recently hired program coordinator Vanessa Jurado,” Dickmeyer said. The coordinator will work with FITGirl Inc., to grow and further develop the program. “Her passion for young ladies, education, and work experience make her a great fit for this organization’s mission,” DickmeyAUGUST 2018

er added. Ten-year-old Josie entered the organization after being bullied in school. “When advice comes from mom, it doesn’t count,” said Josie’s mother. “I wanted to give her fierceness.” Josie said her favorite part of camp is that “Cheri always has girls make new friends.” Ella, an 11-year-old camp attendee, said her favorite part of the organization is that “it empowers girls to be themselves.” And Megan, a 14-year-old attendee and one of the first members of FITGirl Inc., said that she calls Cheri “Queen” and hopes to give back as a counselor one day. “Cheri brings in so many activities that really get the kids out of screen time,” said Jodie, whose daughter Wren loves meeting new people there. Evelyn and Vivian, sisters, both agree that activities such as the marshmallow toss were among their favorite. “What Cheri has been able to do has been amazing,” said their mom. “It’s not about a person’s size or shape but about being healthy. There are friendships and bonds that might otherwise be hard to have. This is a judge free zone.” FITGirl Inc., has recently expanded into a new location. Still undergoing renovation, this space near 156th and Maple will allow FITGirl Inc., to further grow and branch out to more girls. The upcoming 12-week camp will be full of activities and speakers. Topics will include bullying, body image, nutrition, substance abuse, friendships, and social medial. “Social media is a very real thing and it’s not going away,” Dickmeyer said. “I want to help build these girls up, so they can respond to it maturely and appropriately.” Being a nonprofit is certainly challenging. Dickmeyer wants to ensure the camp is affordable for everyone, and it takes support from the entire community to make that happen. “Each year we are competing against much larger nonprofits

There are two age groups for each camp: 8-11 and 12-14, and each have their own age appropriate activities. “We will be expanding to the 14-16 age group this fall with a curriculum customized just for that age group in collaboration with Donna King, facilitator of a global leadership program called Best Year Yet™,” Dickmeyer added. “This wouldn’t be possible without our amazing vendors, partners, board members and staff.” For more information about FITGirl, Inc., visit www.fitgirlinc.com.

living IN THE moment Ethan Chilton is a typical 14-year-old who loves playing baseball and fishing for large-mouth bass at his favorite neighborhood pond. But not so typical is his passion for spending time with ageing adults, specifically ones who struggle with memory loss and Alzheimer’s. Last year Ethan spent 100 hours volunteering his time at retirement communities, earning him the Presidential Award. STORY BY EDGE STAFF • PHOTOS BY CHRISTOPHER TIERNEY PHOTOGRAPHY

Edge: How did you become interested in working with memory care patients? Ethan: My mom (Kaylee) volunteered at a retirement community and said she thought I’d enjoy it. Also a friend of mine on my baseball team was a volunteer and said I should try it. Edge: Were you nervous the first time you volunteered? Ethan: My baseball team had participated in

Ethan: We usually start the day with a whole group and lead them in some stretches. Then we play noodle ball. They sit in chairs in a circle and take turns hitting a balloon with pool noodles. The

two men who sometimes just want to play catch with us. We’ll also eat with people in the cafeteria and talk to them. Edge: Is it difficult seeing people each week who may or may not remember you? Ethan: Not really. The ladies who like to play Wii will say, “haven’t we bowled with you before?” And there’s one man who just gives us a big smile every time he sees us. Edge: That’s a special bond you have. What was your reaction when you found out you had won the Presidential Award for your volunteering? Ethan: I was surprised. There were three awards: bronze, silver, and gold, and I received a gold. The retirement community had a reception for all volunteers and all the staff attended. Edge: How would you describe yourself? Ethan: My mom says I’m very caring. Kaylee: He’s not just caring, he has a passion and a heart for loving ageing adults, and it makes me so proud. Edge: Do you plan to continue your volunteer work with those who have memory loss? Ethan: Definitely. I look forward to it every week. 60 |

Alex Payne | Junior | Mount Michael Benedictine High School Alex Payne didn’t know a soul when he started high school two years ago at Mount Michael, but joining the tennis team opened the door to new friendships. “I was the only one coming from my school (Elkhorn Ridge Middle School). It amazed me how welcoming the coach and the players were.” Alex started on the varsity team as a freshman and made it all the way to the state tournament in his first year, despite never having played competitively before high school. State tennis shows a more competitive side of the normally quiet Alex, according to his mom, Nicole. “He’s out there yelling and supporting his teammates. State tennis brings out a totally different person and someone I’ve never seen him be. He usually reserved, but he was the most vocal out of his team at state tennis.” As a sophomore, Alex was plagued with tennis elbow, but his mental game affected his play as well. “My biggest struggle is my mental game. Sometimes I get into my own head and it affects my shots.” Alex strives for perfection, but his coach has been teaching him to let it go and move on to the next shot. His teammates support each other, keeping the focus on camaraderie and the brotherhood. Living at Mount Michael creates an opportunity for Alex to forge a closer relationship with his fellow students. There are only about 70 boys in his junior class, and 40 of them board at school. “It’s always fun because you always have a lot of people to talk to.” He adds that everyone has an after school activity. “Even in the dorms, there will be people who will go lift weights, play some can jam or pick up flag football or basketball, even board games.” Alex is actively anticipating college and eager to earn a scholarship in math or science, both areas in which he excels. In addition to tennis, he’s also been on the JV golf team and a member of National Honor Society. His intense focus on academics as well as athletics promise Alex a bright future indeed.

PASSION TO PERFORM Brooke Peterson | Senior Millard North High School Brooke Peterson is passionate about dance. According to Millard North coach Andrea Feltz, “Brooke is a very hardworking dancer. She’s always at 100 percent.” As a senior this fall, Brooke will be one of the team captains. She strives to be a good leader by being a positive role model, working hard at every practice, and showing the importance of teamwork. Coach Feltz believes Brooke sets the bar for the team. “She has high goals and expectations for herself and the people she surrounds herself with.” Her devotion to dance has earned her the distinction of representing the Millard North dance team at Nationals for her freshman, sophomore, and junior years, with the team taking second in jazz and fourth in pom last year. The team has competed at Nationals for ten consecutive years. “I really like going to Nationals because that’s where you perform your finalized routines,” she said. “You get to show everyone there what you’ve been working on all year and put your heart out on the stage.” She also revels in spending the week with her best friends, including going to Space Mountain, her favorite ride at Disney World. During the busy part of the season, she balances school, dance team, and Kitty Lee classes and competitions. Brooke also volunteers with a “helping class” at Kitty Lee where she assists younger students with leaps and turns. She struggles to find time to rest her body, but “the biggest difficulty is finding time to do my homework.” Her sophomore year the team volunteered at the Give Kids the World Village, which grants wishes to kids with life threatening illnesses. “We just had a fun time volunteering in their Winter Wonderland Parade,” she said. Volunteering there meant so much to Brooke because her cousin, who had cancer, had been granted a wish there. After graduation she’s intent on competing with the UNO dance team while staying close to home. In the future, she aspires to go into either accounting or counseling. Her attention to detail, strong work ethic, and desire to give back make her a leader on the dance team and will serve her well no matter where she focuses her talents in life. My husband was referred to ‘Dr. Luke’ by a friend. I just called her to say thank you, thank you, thank you! He spent almost an hour and half with us. He explained everything and drew diagrams which were easy to understand. We were there for a second opinion and will stay there. It all seemed very state of the art. What a pleasant experience starting with his wonderful staff and then him.” –DS
