seem that long ago when I sat down and wrote out goals for 2018, and here we are almost to the end. Did you complete the goals you set out to achieve this year? Although I met several, I did not complete them all. Life events always pop up, as we all can attest to. But that’s what the New Year is for—to reassess and make a new plan. It’s exciting to think what 2019 could bring! To stay warm as the temperatures cool, head down to Stirnella for chef-inspired, unique meals. Afterward, stop in at the Red Lion Lounge for a warm eggnog cocktail to complete the evening. Owners Matt Carper and Matt Moser put a lot of heart and thought into creating a one-ofa-kind dining experience for you. In October, I was fortunate to be one of the many amazing judges for the first ever Omaha Children’s Business Fair. So many youth on a mission to change the world, shape their destiny, and learn the value of earning a dollar! This was such a great event, and I can’t wait to see how it evolves. holiday season, and Village Pointe always provides more than just shopping. Take the whole family and experience the holidays by making memories. We wrapped up October with a very successful fifth anniversary celebration. I can’t express how thankful I am for the readers, advertising partners, and the staff that all help make Edge the publication that it is. With that said, one of our goals for 2019 is to bring the magazine to life through pop-up events! Stay tuned for more information about this exciting new adventure! Carole Sprunk Publisher

here is nothing more captivating than a stunning view. When that view is right outside your home, it makes the rest of the world fade away and is a treasure that’s part of your everyday life. That’s the type of view that stretches across the west side of Sogno Palazzo, or “dream palace”—an exquisite property in West Omaha that overlooks the Elkhorn River bluff. It’s the sole reason owner Roland Manarin originally purchased the land in 1980, and it’s what makes it so desirable today. 8|

Manarin’s Italian heritage influenced many aspects of the home, which sits on 4.72 acres. His father was in the terrazzo tile industry, which instilled his fondness for marble floors, and Sogno Palazzo’s floors are covered in marble from around the world. “Marble floors are as common in Italian homes as carpet is in the U.S.,” he said. Manarin grew up in his great-grandfather’s home in Northern Italy, which was built with 3-ft. thick stone walls and withstood an earthquake in the 1970s that nearly destroyed the rest of the region. He moved to America when he was nine years old and kept the memory of that home with him. “I wanted my home to be able to withstand a tornado, so it’s built with double thick walls as well.”

Manarin lived in an existing home on a neighboring property while he built Sogno Palazzo, which was completed in 2001. He had envisioned the type of home he wanted, and scoured home design books, noting photos of elements he wanted to incorporate. Attention to detail is prominent throughout the home, from the intricate iron staircase to the carved lion heads in the great room fireplace to the glass beads hand-applied on the dining room walls. Designer Lisa Marie with Wine About Your Space recently updated the décor, marrying Italian style with modern living. The three-bedroom home features a gourmet kitchen surrounded by ample areas for entertaining, from the formal dining room to the sitting room, and out into the all-seasons patio. The lower level has a large wet bar, game area, living room, hidden temperature-controlled wine-cellar, and walk-out access to a vast patio complete with pool and gazebo that overlooks the river bluff. taken place on the property. Other features include garage space for up to 11 cars, multiple walking paths that lead to the Elkhorn River and private pond stocked with catfish, a waterfall, dock, and fire pit. “It’s so serene by the pond,” Manarin said. “It’s the perfect place to get away from the world, to meditate, and enjoy solitude while still being right next to the city.” The property is also lush with vegetation—fruit and nut trees, raspberry bushes, and even grape vines. Manarin said when he was growing up, food was often scarce, so he feels a sense of security from having a self-sufficient property. Not to mention, the orchard and vineyard adds to the country estate allure. But his favorite part of the home
is far and above the view. “It’s stunning to sit in the living room and watch the sun sets, a storm rolling in, or to wake up and see a blanket of snow covering everything,” he said. “It’s the perfect place to witness all four seasons.” It’s also the perfect place to entertain, which Manarin did often. He regularly entertained clients of his investment firm, either with groups of 30-40, or even open houses that welcomed hundreds of people and even built a parking lot on the north side of the property to accommodate large groups. When not entertaining, he would enjoy cooking a quiet dinner, spending time in the home’s library, or occasionally fishing at the pond. Now retired, Manarin is busy fulfill-
ing his bucket list, traveling around the world, recognizing that the home he built from scratch is meant for new owners. With the convenience of having a pond, river, 4.72 acres all right at home, it is a place that someone with a busy life can still enjoy many hobbies and create countless memories. “It’s ideal for someone who likes to entertain and who also values solitude,” he said. “It has everything—breathtaking views, lots of room to play, and peace and quiet. And it’s a home built with a level of quality that will last.” For more information on the property or to schedule a showing, contact Michael Evans with Berkshire Hathaway Home Services, 402-616-1610, Facebook.com/MichaelEvansRealtor.

f you haven’t been to Village Pointe in West Omaha recently, there’s no better time than at the holidays. In its 15th holiday season, Village Pointe goes well beyond shopping to offer complete experiences with restaurants, services, and numerous family friendly events. “Everything you need. Everything they want.” That’s Village Pointe’s holiday shopping slogan for the season, and it’s what all the retailers in the center work towards. Marketing Director Amy Houston said many of their stores have taken on a “shopper-driven experience” by holding in-store events throughout the holidays. As a center, Village Pointe has a number of events planned for the month of December, including complimentary carriage rides sponsored by Core Bank, story time with Santa and Mrs. Claus, and its partnership with the Omaha Jaycees to provide gifts for children in need. The Funny Bone Comedy Club will also have a family-friendly show recommended for kids ages 10+ on December 22nd. Kendra Scott, one of the center’s newest stores, is offering a 15% discount the week of December 6th to anyone who brings in a toy to donate to Toys for Tots. The first in Nebraska, Kendra Scott offers a range of jewelry for all ages and

budgets, and is known for its Kendra Scott Color Bar™, which allows customers to create custom jewelry in minutes and then leave with it in hand. Five years ago Sondra Gerber brought her gifts and home décor store, Blue Pomegranate, to Village Pointe from Benson. She was attracted by the events they held, as well as the fact it has a small town look and feel. “It’s a beautiful location with the landscaping, outdoor fireplaces, fountains, and holiday decorations,” she said. Blue Pom, as its customers call it, features handmade gifts and art by American and local makers. Gerber herself was named runner-up for the 2018 Handmade Entrepreneur of the year by Handmade Business Magazine. For the 5th holiday season in a row, Blue Pom is partnering with Village Pointe in a “Gift with Purchase” program. When a customer spends more than $200 anywhere in the center and brings in their receipt to Blue Pom,
they will receive a handmade ornament from Gerber. “We believe that shopping should be an experience that makes you feel special,” she said. “Our customers come into the store for stories and for smiles.” Another store known for its unique experience is Scheels. Whether it’s the famous Ferris wheel, handmade fudge, or the second story gift lodge, the onestop shop caters to all shoppers offering items from hunting and golf to shoes and clothing. “Our stores are unique because of the variety of items we offer in a great family environment,” said Matt Jochum, Assistant Store Leader. Personalized gifts are always popular, and several stores offer unique ideas. Yankee Candle can put a photo on a candle in-store while you wait. Coach offers complimentary monogramming and gift wrap. And many stores have their own line of Husker apparel. Luxury items are also popular—Bed Bath & Beyond now features an Ugg home line that includes bedding, throws, and pet beds. And for the person that tends to be hard to shop for, a Village Pointe gift card, available in the Management Office or online, is available in any increment and is good at all 60 stores, restaurants, services, and at the movie theater. Houston said shopping at Village Pointe isn’t just about checking off a list of gifts you need to buy; it’s about taking the time to enjoy the holiday season. “It’s about going to an event with your family, dining out, and donating to charity all at the same time. It’s not just about buying, it’s about having a whole holiday experience.” 120 Regency Pkwy, Suite 124

Elkhorn native Becky Miralles leads the group, bringing a diverse business background. She spent 15 years with First Data in Omaha working in various departments, including fraud, contracts, and eventually finance. A corporate setting was all she knew and had never thought about any alternatives to a career until she met a real estate agent at a golf outing. Crediting Eryka Morehead, Miralles recalled how Morehead encouraged her to pursue real estate and eventually became her mentor. “Nobody had ever taken an interest in how else I could be using my skills until then.” In 2012 Miralles left First Data, admitting it was a relief to not have to face the constant change. She took real estate courses, passed her tests, and earned her realtor license the following year. The timing couldn’t have worked out better, because not being tied to a 9-5 desk job allowed her to focus on her studies while also staying home with her youngest child, who was in preschool. She started working for NP Dodge and dove into the business, calling leads and following up with referrals. “It was up to me to make things happen, and I knew what I needed to do to be successful,” she said. In 2016 Miralles moved to Berkshire Hathaway Home Services. This past year, she made yet another move, forming the Compass Team at Better Homes and Gardens, bringing with her: Katie Day, Chad Ellison, Amber Stroh, and Amanda Taylor. “Better Homes and Gardens feels like a small town,” Miralles said. “Everyone is friendly, and everyone here feels significant because we connect and communicate with each other constantly.”

Sharing a bright, open, collaborative office space helps foster a team and family environment. “Life is so fast-paced, it’s nice to have a relaxing, homey place where we can bounce ideas off of each other,” Taylor said. Fun and flexibility are a common theme among Compass Team. They are all friends inside the office and often socialize at team outings with their families and clients outside the office. “Everyone here is fun to work with, the culture is authentic, and we’re so willing to help each other with anything,” said Stroh, who has been an agent for four years. Day, an agent for eight years, agreed, adding, “We all have similar beliefs and work styles, so it’s a great fit. I can see us doing extraordinary things.” What sets her apart from other agents is that she lets her passion shine through in everything that she does for her clients. “It’s not hard to get a real estate license, but it is hard to survive as an agent and even harder to be successful,” she explained. “But when you are passionate, you take risks, which will help you stand out and be a successful agent.” Going the extra mile is something the entire team strives to achieve for each client. Ellison recalled that during one his client’s walk-throughs, they commented that they wished the seller hadn’t taken the American flag that had been outside the home. For a closing

gift, Ellison gave the new homeowner a flag of their own. “I love that you actually make an impact on people,” he said. “You’re not just helping someone buy a house, you’re helping them move to another phase of their life—achieving a goal outside of just buying a house, whether it’s moving for a promotion, to be closer to family, or enjoying retirement.” Ellison doesn’t see himself as a sales agent but rather as a self-proclaimed relationship agent, often being invited to and attending golf outings, parties, and fishing trips with former clients. “Expect Better” is the promise that Better Homes and Gardens promises to all clients, and the Compass Team goes even further, upholding what it has deemed their own core values: honesty, integrity, connection, community, and clarity. “We approach every transaction as though it were our own,” Miralles said. “I’m very honest with all my clients and want them to have the best possible experience, because they’re not just our clients, they become our friends for a lifetime.”

The business partners first worked together at Flagship Restaurant Group, running both Plank and Baby Blue Sushi. Moser wanted to eventually open his own place but wanted it to be in just the right neighborhood. When he first saw what had once been the Blackstone Garage in the early 1900s—it even had a hole in the floor that used to be the car elevator—he knew it was the location he’d been looking for. He immediately asked Carper to come on board as the manager. “I knew he’d be perfect for it; he’s always been the yin to my yang,” Moser said. The name “Stirnella” is an homage to Nebraska’s state bird, the Meadowlark. “Sturnella” is the scientific name, but numerous businesses have used that. Instead, they changed it to “Stirnella” as a way to still recognize the local culture but also tie it into the restaurant industry, also using the Meadowlark as the • Holiday shopping with or for you • Care for your loved ones and pets while you are away • Holiday event assistance • Transportation (including to and from airport) Gift certifica te available s

restaurant’s logo. They also incorporated many local elements into the décor, such as tables made from old railcars, and reclaimed walls from houses in the neighborhood. Local artist Andrea Stein painted all the artwork throughout the restaurant as well. The menu Moser has created is filled with comfort food that Midwesterners are both familiar with and gives them a sense of comfort. Some of these include the Blackstone Burger, Steak and Frites, and Spätzle. While these staples are always available, what does change with the seasons are the components of the dishes. “We support as many local purveyors as possible, working with a number of local farmers and tailoring the menu to what they have in season,” Moser said. For example, Stirnella’s new fall menu includes a veal and foie gras meatloaf with a potato puree and smoked local mushrooms, as well as a celery root ravioli with fresh local truffles. “Some people dine out without ever thinking where their food is coming from,” Carper said. “Plum Creek Farms delivers freerange chicken to us every week, and then Matt (Moser) turns it into an amazing dish that you know where it came from.” Carper added that Omaha has really evolved over the last five to seven years with many restaurants and unique events and happenings. “We want to keep what we do interesting for our guests, provide fresh offerings, while also standing the test of time,” he said. “We try to showcase what we have and reach people, whether it’s by participating in charitable events or inviting groups to enjoy our complimentary party room.”

Open seven days a week for lunch and dinner, as well as all day happy hour on Sundays, Stirnella likes to incorporate local ingredients into its cocktails such as rhubarb infused tequila for margaritas, and offers 10 local beers on tap. The restaurant even features an all-seasons patio, and there are three parking lots in the area open to the public free of charge. In addition to opening Stirnella in Feb. 2017, Meadowlark Management also opened Red Lion Lounge next door last December, and most recently opened Butterfish this past September. “We’re lucky to have three businesses in this area,” Moser said. “With all of the unique, local businesses here, it rivals other larger cities.” Carper agreed, adding that the beauty of the Blackstone District is the friendly sense of community. “We’re thankful that the city has embraced this district, because we’re all trying to bring people from other parts of the city to this neighborhood,” he said. “We truly offer a unique experience right in your backyard.”

When Foundation One’s CEO Randy Burns started in banking 50 years ago, it was with a small family-owned bank in Minnesota. The accountants used clipboards, loan documents were typed on non-electric typewriters, and employees took turns taking out the trash. The entire business was based upon providing loans to friends and family using investments from the same clientele. That belief in knowing your clients, coupled with today’s technology is a key differentiator of Foundation One Bank. Throughout his career, Burns has had the opportunity to charter several banks. When he set out to charter a new one in Omaha in 2007, the government set up restrictions preventing new banks from starting. Instead, Burns was able to purchase an existing bank—Western State Bank in Waterloo—which became Foundation One’s first branch. Today Foundation One has three branches throughout West Omaha. “We wanted to create a successful, profitable organization that benefits shareholders, its customers, internal partners, and the community we’re in,” Burns said. “To accomplish that, we utilized certain concepts successfully developed by others.” Those concepts were mirrored after other Omaha success stories, namely Peter Kiewit and Warren Buffet. In fact, Burns’ Leadership Omaha class in the mid-80s had the opportunity to spend an afternoon discussing the legacy of Peter Kiewit with a panel of local influencers. On that panel was Warren Buffet. “I thought about what I wanted my own legacy to be, and part of that is caring for others and giving of

yourself.” Relationships are the cornerstone of every facet of life, and when relationships are developed between a client and their financial services partner, then it leads to individual long-term success for the client. Internal relationships at Foundation One Bank are also critical. Senior Vice President Greg Lovette recently moved back to Omaha from Phoenix and joined Burns at Foundation One because of its “we” culture. “Everyone makes decisions together, and everyone feels like they can make a difference in our client’s lives and in each other’s lives.” The emphasis on team runs deep at Foundation One. Every employee is asked to run a monthly meeting, including making the agenda of discussion topics depending on what they feel is most important. The bank is also open evenings and on Saturdays to accommodate its clients’ needs, and every employee, including the execu-
tive team, takes turns working during those extended hours. Burns also has his personal cell phone number on his business card to ensure he’s available any time to any client. “Somebody once asked me, ‘What is the value of a relationship in banking?’ My answer was, ‘You’ll know it when you need it.’” Foundation One Bank is truly a family business, with Burns’ daughter Molly Merrell joining the team in 2014. Having begun her banking career at a young age, she values the trust that people put in them. “I’ve had opportunities to work for larger banks, but I never did,” she said. “Being able to walk into your bank and the employees know your name and your children’s names, is something you didn’t even realize you were missing.” “Servant leadership” is the term Burns uses to describe the philosophy at Foundation One. “We build relationships through activism,” he said. Every team member is involved in different
activities and organizations in the community. They also hold client events throughout the year, such as Husker tailgate parties, photos with Santa, and document shredding days. All of their efforts have paid off too. Since purchasing the first branch in Waterloo 10 years ago, Foundation One Bank has grown just under 800% and plans to organically double in size over the next six years. That success is due to making decisions based on a long-term vision, not on instant profitability. “We are active listeners for our clients and want to provide them with what they need, not just what is available,” Merrell said. Burns added that customization is considered risk in banking, but it’s a risk they are willing to take because they don’t just look blindly at someone’s financial record, but rather look at the individual person and their character. It takes extra time and effort from every single team member, but it’s why Foundation One Bank is trusted by the community.

Rachel Benson, lead chairperson of Omaha Acton Children’s Business Fair and founder of Acton Academy is very pleased with the results of the first children’s business fair in Omaha. “I saw a need in our community for these budding entrepreneurs to connect and grow on purpose in that mindset,” she said. “The Children’s Business Fair is an ongoing experience that will be more focus and growth-based rather than achievement based. This ecosystem has already been successful in connecting these business owners with other resources in their community.” There were four categories from ages 5-17 that were judged during the fair. Each age group was judged on the same three criteria: The Best Presentation & Creativity, Most Original Business Idea, and Highest Business Potential. The judges, also called “Chief Encouragers” were all active members in the community who are equally passionate about growing its youth. The Pierce brothers participated in the event, promoting their brand “J Bros Clothing and Design.” Jayce, age 4, Judah, age 6, and older brother Jericho, age 7, joined forces for their business venture. Not only did they have fun, but they won first place in the 5-7 age category for Highest Business Potential. “I enjoyed making the shirts to sell,” Jericho said. Jayce was a bit more candid, adding, “My favorite part was making lots of money.” The event started with a bit of inspiration from local influencers, including former Nebraska quarterback Eric Crouch. The participants were inspired and mentored by many volunteers. As an ice breakers and energy booster prior to the show’s opening, members were all provided with Children’s Fair bucks to spend and support the youth businesses. “There are relationships and business opportunities that are skyrocketing from this event,” Benson said. “For 2019 we’re already hoping to create two events, one in the spring and one in the fall, but also have times together between events to really help these entrepreneurs with their success and overall development.” See table for a complete list of winners in each category.

The “write” plan a column on estate and financial planning for everyone By LISA M. LEHAN, J.D.
What exactly is an estate plan? Webster defines “estate” as all of the things that a person owns and “plan” as something that a person intends to do. Accordingly, your estate plan sets forth your intentional decisions about the ultimate disposition of your property.
ABOUT THE AUTHOR About the author: I am a shareholder of Koley Jessen P.C., L.L.O., located in One Pacific Place. My practice is focused on estate and tax planning. Outside of the office, I enjoy spending time with my husband and our three children. The process of establishing your estate plan involves three primary components: (1) the execution of certain legal documents, (2) the coordination of asset titling, and (3) updating beneficiary designations. Typically, the following documents are prepared and executed as part of each person’s basic estate plan: a Last Will and Testament, a Trust Agreement, a Financial Power of Attorney, and an Advance Directive. Together, your Will and Trust control the disposition of your assets; these documents set forth who is to receive your property, as well and how and when they’ll receive it. If your children are minors, your Will also appoints guardians for them. Your Financial Power of Attorney and Advance Directive grant an agent the authority to make financial and health care-related decisions for you if you are incapacitated. Once you execute your legal documents, it is equally as important to title your assets and complete your beneficiary designations in a way that does not override the provisions in your Will and Trust. Assets may be titled in your individual name, in the name of your Trust, or jointly with another person. In order to fully carry out your intentions regarding the disposition of your assets following death, it is critical that the titling of your
assets be coordinated with your estate plan documents. Titling arrangements can also have significant income and estate tax consequences, and if properly structured, help you avoid probate. Beneficiary designations for assets such as life insurance and retirement accounts control who receives the asset upon your death despite the provisions of your Will and Trust, so updates are necessary to assure coordination. Beneficiary designations can also have significant tax consequences. To achieve your goals, your estate plan must be comprehensive and should be coordinated between several advisors, including your lawyer, your accountant, and your investment advisor. You have a lot to consider, but as with most things in life, having a plan feels good.

maha Physical Therapy Institute (OPTI) specializes in orthopedic and sports related injuries and pain. OPTI brings something better to the physical therapy realm in the Omaha area. We get results by providing you the care that you deserve with guaranteeing one-on-one treatment with the same physical therapist every single visit. We employ physical therapists with a doctoral degree who have a passion for continuing their education in order to provide the most effective treatment interventions in an encouraging, fun, and professional environment. If you have been injured or are experiencing pain, here are a few general guidelines to assist with your recovery: 1. Movement is Medicine- Remain Active Try to keep moving as much as you can comfortably. Research shows that staying active can be very beneficial in your recovery. It is good to continue your day-today activities and participate in light-exercise. If any of these activities increase your discomfort, it is okay to discontinue them and try something else. With that being said, if you have had a recent surgery or fracture and have special instructions from your doctor, it is very important to adhere to those guidelines! 2. Hurt Does Not Always Equal Harm Many people with pain initially limit their activity because they are afraid to cause additional damage. As mentioned above, staying active is very important in your recovery. The human body is remarkably strong and resilient. The severity of pain does not always match the level of damage to your body. Think of how painful stubbed toes can be. There is very little tissue damage with a stubbed toe, but significant discomfort. With this in mind, it is important to be conscious of your pain, but do not let it scare you! 3. Be Positive Your attitude about your health and wellness can have a major influence on your ability to heal and recover. Being stressed or anxious about your pain can actually increase your pain levels as well as the amount of time it takes for you to recover. Knowing that most injuries and pain will resolve on their own with time can be a comforting thought as you overcome your injury. 4. Changes in Your Symptoms If you notice a significant increase in your pain, or a drastic change in your ability to walk or move, give Omaha Physical Therapy Institute a call! We can help! 402-934-8688.

Gut and GI issues in kids By DR. STEPHEN STINN
Why are so many kids today experiencing gut issues? The way I look at it is our current environment is not conducive to building a healthy gut microbiome. Two environmental difference being: C-section births and inability to breastfeed. C-section births are much higher than they used to be. I understand this must be done in some emergency situations, but the current 32% rate (nationally) is too high in my opinion. To compare, in 1970, the rate was 5%. Going through the birth canal will give the baby its first exposure to good bacteria, helping build a strong gut microbiome. A mother’s inability to breastfeed may be on the rise too. Whether the baby isn’t latching, is colicky, or the mother isn’t able to produce milk. Breastfeeding allows the mother to pass on antibodies to help with the baby’s vulnerable immune system early on as well as help produce a healthy gut microbiome. But the biggest difference I see with kids today is their bodies are in a very stressed out state. They are in what I call a “gas pedal mode” (hyper-sympathetic response). This can most commonly be thought of as your fight or flight response. This not only affects their ability to concentrate, sit still, and critically think. But it also affects where their body is sending blood and oxygen. When you’re in a gas pedal mode, you are sending your precious resources, blood, and oxygen to your muscles. Think of if you were in a fight or flight state because a bear was chasing you. You would want your extra resources and oxygen to go to your muscles to fight or run from the bear. But what if there’s not actually a bear? What if you’re chronically in this mode for no reason? Well, then your body is needlessly wasting resources and energy through your muscles. Where should the resources, blood, 60 |
EDGE
and oxygen be going instead? To your internal organs and gut! How does that happen? By getting out of the chronic gas pedal mode and more into a brake pedal mode where healing, digestion, and development can take place in the gut.
This is what we focus on in our office. We have state of the art technology that measures whether you or your child is in a gas or brake pedal state. We use a technique focusing on Functional Correction as opposed to traditional chiropractic that excels in taking kids from gas pedal to brake pedal. Please call the office at 402 504 4676 to set up a complimentary phone or office consultation to learn more and to see where your child is on the gas/brake pedal pendulum.

SHOOTING FOR
THE STARS
Jasmine McGinnis-Taylor | Junior | Westside High School by Shelly Nosbisch
Jasmine McGinnis-Taylor became the basketball player she is today because her mom hated the smell of chlorine. After dislocating her hip in softball at age 10, she took up swimming, but her mom didn’t like the strong chlorine smell, so Jasmine switched to basketball and hasn’t looked back. At 6’2”, Jasmine plays varsity center for the 2018 State Champion Westside Warriors. She’s been named to the All-Tournament team, following the 2017 Metro Holiday tournament, as well as given All-State honorable mention. During the summer he also plays for Retro Hoops, an AAU team. According to her Westside coach, Steve Clark, her competitive edge sets her apart. Jasmine not only hates to lose, she’ll raise her level of play to make sure she can compete with anyone. “Her ability to block shots, to go up and get rebounds before other girls have a chance, and to score around the rim, have impressed college coaches and are a challenge for opposing teams,” said Clark. Jasmine is more modest. “It just feels good to help my team.” She has had interest from multiple Division I and Division II coaches for both her athleticism and her strong academic skills. She has her sights set on playing Division I, with a future career as a Division I coach or a sports broadcaster. In December 2017, the Warriors traveled to Phoenix, Arizona for the Nike Tournament of Champions, where Jasmine was named All-Tournament as well. Unfortunately, Jasmine tore her ACL in January 2018 and has had to focus on physical therapy to recover. “At first it was really hard. I didn’t know what to do with myself because basketball is all I did at the time.” Now she’s back on the court where she belongs. Jasmine’s biggest challenge was when she lost her best friend and sister, Olivia, to a brain aneurysm on July 4, 2013. Her family is starting the Love, Olivia Foundation to provide scholarships and athletic shoes for kids who may not be able to afford the expense. Jasmine has Olivia’s name tattooed on her right wrist in her memory. Her mom added, “It’s a hard thing to talk about when part of our family is in heaven.” Working through adversity off and on the court is key. The Warriors have been working with DJ Rezac, a culture coach and strategic planner, to develop the culture of teamwork. “Other teams may have talent, but they aren’t best friends on and off the court,” says Jasmine. Her mom believes this supportive framework has been huge for the team and for Jasmine. “BCD” is one of the team’s catchphrases. “Don’t blame, complain, or defend,” Jasmine explained. “You can’t complain about things that happen. You have to move on.” Jasmine’s mature attitude and sportsmanship make her a valuable teammate and a good friend. CHRISTOPHER TIERNEY PHOTOGRAPHY

FIELDING
SUCCESS
Noah Gregor | Junior | Millard North High School by Shelly Nosbisch It’s important to think on your feet in Lacrosse. Not a problem for Noah Gregor, a junior at Millard North High School, whose problem-solving skills in Lacrosse are second to none, according to Coach Travis Timm. “When something goes right, he is one of the first to congratulate his teammates, and when things go wrong, he works through the problems to correct them in the game.” Noah plays for Cobra Lacrosse, a club team that combines players from Millard North, Millard South, and Skutt. Noah possesses a fearlessness and leadership on the field that makes him a formidable defender. He has played both Junior Varsity and Varsity for the past two years, causing eight forced turnovers, three turnovers, and getting fifteen groundballs for Varsity this past spring. He enjoys playing defense and credits Coach Timm with helping him develop as a player and as a person. “Coach says go one hundred percent in everything, work hard.” In the summer, Noah plays on a select tournament
team that travels to Minneapolis, Chicago, and Kansas City. He’s played against the same metro area kids since sixth grade, so he enjoys playing against the fresh competition because it’s “different, more of a challenge.” Outside of Lacrosse, Noah works for Omarail, an aluminum fencing and railing company. On days off school or on the weekends, he’s working. He balances everything by trying to keep it all separate and stay focused on what he’s doing in the moment. When hanging out with his friends, they often play basketball or watch sports together. Everything with them revolves around sports. “That’s pretty much all we’d do or else we’ll start fighting with each other,” he said, smiling. Noah is a jokester, keeping things light on the field. “I take it seriously, but I like to have fun.” The teammates give each other a hard time, and Noah’s often the leader in this area as well. “There’s definitely never a dull moment with Noah,” Coach Timm said. Noah is excited about a future career in welding or carpentry. He plans to stay close to home after graduating, either attending a trade school at Metro Community College or joining the military. Based on his outstanding eye-hand coordination, problemsolving skills and quick reflexes that he uses for Lacrosse, Noah will excel at whatever trade he chooses.
