REACH US We want to hear from you. Ideas, suggestions, compliments and critiques, send them to us at Carole@EdgeMagazine.com

The recent

floods that have impacted our state are truly devastating. The Omaha community has been nothing short of amazing. Two years ago, I wrote my first publisher’s letter for Edge Magazine. I look at that article hanging on my wall often. It reminds me of my “why” I wanted to be part of Edge and Omaha. The why keeps getting bigger, especially as Omaha grows and changes. The community never ceases to amaze. We are there when our neighbor needs us with a helping hand and in some cases, an airplane ride which has been an asset for our neighboring communities who are unable to travel for supplies.

As we finally move into spring, we might be compelled to make personal changes too. Maybe getting into better shape is part of that change. Club Pilates has three locations in West Omaha, and as a beginner to Pilates myself, this is a great way to feel better and destress. Something as simple as changing your hair can add confidence, which Seven Salon is doing one haircut at a time. Whether you want to trim things up or make a bold statement, the education that the team brings is ready for the challenge. If spring fever has you itching to get out of the house, head down to Sage Student Bistro. by students studying culinary art. For those families with a special needs child, dining out can pose problems, which is why Kinesha Roach started O.U.R. Gathering Place—community dinners that serve as safe, welcoming environments where special needs families can enjoy a meal out together. Have you made it to an Inside Edge event yet? If not, check out our Facebook page for the next event in May. We invite you to experience the pages of Edge Magazine and meet our partners and other readers in the community who are helping create positive changes every day. Carole Sprunk Publisher

riving into The Sanctuary home development in West Omaha feels like touring a wildlife park. Tree-lined winding roads that lead to private retreats are sprawled on acreage lots tucked among the natural woods. It’s what makes a home in The Sanctuary, a Lanoha development, so desirable, and a location that once homeowners are a part of, they don’t want to live anywhere else in town.

& style

That’s what drew one of The Sanctuary’s current residents to the subdivision, and when another home came up for sale, they decided to purchase it because they loved the area so much. Originally built and decorated in a Tuscan Style, the 9,000 sq ft. home recently underwent almost an entire remodel. It now features neutral colors in all the cabinets, flooring, and large pieces of furniture accented by bright pops of pinks and purples that can easily be changed to fit any color palette. With five bedrooms, an addition that includes a piano room, a finished basement, a pool and a fourcar garage, the home had numerous elements that made it ideal.

The goal with the remodel was to give each room its own distinct feel and purpose because the owners felt too often you move from room to room with spaces that aren’t utilized. They started with the kitchen, opening up the space, moving the range hood higher to show off the marble wall backsplash, creating an oversized island with hidden storage around its base, and large upper cabinets accented with sophisticated hardware. The living room also underwent major renovations, most notable the floor-toceiling fireplace with a stone surround and wood to match the wood surrounding the island in the adjacent kitchen. Stunning, oversized crystal chandeliers provide a femininity to the masculine quality of the wood and marble throughout the home, as do the fur accents used in several of the main rooms. One of the most unique design elements is the use of texture and color on the walls that serves as art. Faux painting techniques that mimic textured wallpaper are strategically placed on wall cutouts, and a grasscloth mural directly on the office wall is even framed like

an actual print with beading incorporated into the faux finish on the wall surrounding it. Several of the bathroom walls are flocked, providing a soft, elegant texture to walls, and even stone and marble serves as its own artwork in several areas. The advantage to using faux painting over wallpaper is that you can achieve the same look without having seams in the middle of the wall. One of the keys to achieving such an elegant look was working with a designer and multiple artisans. The homeowners said people are often afraid to explore their own originality, instead replicating trends or sourcing from one place. But there are unique items everywhere and at every price point. As long as the large, central pieces are neutral—flooring, counter tops, and furniture—then other décor elements are easy to change. But what also makes homes in The Sanctuary so extraordinary is that they’re able to let the outdoors in. Large windows allow for ample natural light and views of vast woods filled with deer, turkeys, and bald eagles that sit in the tree tops. In fact, the remodel included installing a picture window above the kitchen sink so the homeowners had a premium view out the front of the house. The Sanctuary’s setting is perfect for anyone who wants a quiet, private home that is unlike any other part of town. Every home has its own individuality that will fit many styles. REFRESH After a long, cold winter trapped indoors, many of us find ourselves desperate to make a change… and even the simplest alteration to our surroundings can create a seemingly complete transformation. Our favorite way to freshen a space? Hands down, it’s by changing out paint colors. We asked three of the Senior Designers on staff at Interiors Joan and Associates what their favorite paint color is to use in projects and why. BETH SETTLES, ALLIED MEMBER ASID “I love to use A Stone’s Throw by PPG. The color is deep and rich looking. It’s a gray – brown chameleon color that goes well with golds, creams, and also gray tones.” ELLEN TURNAGE, ALLIED MEMBER ASID “Revere Pewter by Benjamin Moore. This color provides a serene canvas that renders precision and definition to my projects.” JENNY COLSON, ALLIED MEMBER ASID “SW 7069, Iron Ore by Sherwin Williams. I love to use this color for a strong accent in a room whether it be on walls or cabinets.” 16 |

Paint is an easy enough switch that you can afford to change with the trends. Soft, soothing neutrals are always well received and serve as complimentary backdrops to furnishings and accessories. Warm, earthy colors lend a cozy feel to a space, while cooler colors tend to give the impression of a larger space or a serene ambiance. Color can take on a completely different hue depending on the amount and type of light that penetrates the room. Tones and shades of colors can morph into variants of gray, pink, and green if the light is “just right.” An experienced designer can take all things into consideration when selecting the right hue for your space. This one simple choice can make a world of difference in the success or failure of your overall design schematic.

ne of Kinesha Roach’s fondest memories growing up was visiting her Grandma Johnson’s house in Kansas for the holidays. Not only was the spread of food abundant, but the warmth, welcome, and love shared by everyone there was undeniable. In fact, she’d bring friends with her just to experience that type of hospitality. It’s that depth of connection and community that everyone feels when coming to O.U.R. Gathering Place. “O.U.R.” stands for outreach, understanding, and relationships.

O.U.R. Gathering Place, founded by Roach, hosts dinners for families with special needs children and adults. The idea for the organization sprouted from the challenges she and her husband experienced when dining out with their family. As a parent of children with special needs, Kinesha believed she was not alone. The simple act of dining out has proven to be difficult. She and her husband Jarell have four children: John (16), Karia (9), Jeremiah (8), and Karley (3). Jeremiah was diagnosed with autism before the age of two and is mostly non-verbal. Karia’s special needs took longer to diagnose, but both children received early intervention and occupational therapies. However, dining out for Jeremiah still poses problems— the music might be too loud, the lighting not quite right, or Jeremiah might jump or screech—eliciting stares, whispers, or laughs from other diners. “We’ve experienced all kinds of emotions that no family should feel when you’re just trying to take your family out to eat,” Roach said. “It was frustrating, and I knew if I was having these feelings, other parents must be having them too.” Having worked in special education, earned a culinary degree from the Institute for the Culinary Arts at Metropolitan Community College, and owning a catering business, Roach’s affinity for serving others, especially through hospitality, is a natural fit. Last spring she pitched her idea for O.U.R. Gathering Place to the Omaha SOUP: Community and Crowdfunding event. She won a grant for $560, which she used to host the

first community dinner last June at the La Vista Community Center. A second dinner was held last November at the Charles E. Lakin YMCA in Council Bluffs, and an upcoming dinner will be held April 20, 2019, from 11:00am-2:30pm at the Butler-Gast YMCA in Omaha. The dinners are free, but goodwill donations are accepted. Roach said she tries to find locations that are willing to have the event for low or no cost. Each venue must be wheelchair accessible with wide open spaces, such as with a gym, so that all children have plenty of room to move around. “I want to continue to create a judgement-free dining experience for families,” Roach said. “As parents of special needs kids, we simply share a mutual understanding.” Jennifer Rupprecht, whose three-year-old son, Sam, has autism, said it’s a “blessing” to be able to eat out as a family. “It’s wonderful to be surrounded by other families who understand the challenges that eating out can present,” she said. “And it’s a great opportunity to connect with other ASD (Autism Spectrum Disorder) families.” 24 |

TO FIND OUT MORE For more about O.U.R. Gathering Place, follow them on Facebook, or contact Kinesha Roach at outgatheringplaceomaha@gmail.com.

Roach said she’s been incredibly surprised by the response. Each dinner had more than 150 people attend. Even a few young adults with special needs attended with their parents. Papillion and Bellevue Chick-Fil-A restaurants donated kid-friendly nuggets to each dinner. Roach’s concern for various dietary needs encouraged her to provide gluten-free and vegan options as well. During each meal, parents have time to connect with each other, kids are able to play—a sensory room is available each time—and families can enjoy activities such as making affirmation signs. “It’s the special needs community coming together and having that feeling that we’re not alone,” Roach explained. The dinners are made possible through grants and donations. Roach

has been fortunate to have a team of volunteers—some whom don’t even have special needs kids—help each time. Her sister, Karissa, and husband, Jarell, are also key to the success of O.U.R Gathering Place, as are the families who attend. Roach’s dream is for O.U.R. Gathering Place to have its own center where they can not only hold regular dinners and provide educational opportunities for parents, but house other services that families would need, such as physician and dental clinics, which are places that also pose challenges for special needs kids. She’d also like to be able to provide employment opportunities for teens and young adults with special needs. Kinesha also welcomes restaurants that are interested in hosting dinners as well, which will provide a traditional dining experience. But for now, Roach just wants others to remember to be kind. “If you see a special needs family while you’re out and about, extend them grace. Say hello or share a word of encouragement. Understanding people who are different from you goes a very long way.”

BMW, MINI, Land Rover, and Jaguar of Omaha are moving to a state-of-the-art new facility at the new Heartwood Preserve, opening at the end of 2019. Spanning 500 acres of the former Boys Town campus, Heartwood Preserve will be Omaha’s premier office, dining, and retail center.

Q:

What was the impetus to move from your current Westroads location? A: The short answer is space. The business has grown to a point where we need more space to operate. We love the central location Westroads offers, but the opportunity to be part of a world class development like Heartwood was impossible to pass up. Q: This new development seems amazing. Will there be other Auto Dealers? A: Actually we’ll be the only one. Heartwood is a new, unique mixed-use development on a scale not executed before in the Metro area. We’re proud to be the only automotive client, and feel we’re a good fit, offering some of the most valued car brands available. Q: What advantages will customers gain by this move? A: This will be Omaha’s premier auto dealership. No expense was spared during the design and construction. We’ll have the newest technology, tools, and training to service vehicles the most efficient way possible. Plus, the location is easily accessible - just moments from Dodge Street. Considering the residential, dining, and retail offerings, we feel Heartwood Preserve will be a convenient stop for our customers. Q: What else should we anticipate with the move to Heartwood? A: It should all be very impressive. Whether looking at just our dealership or the development as a whole, it should say something new and unique that Omaha residents will appreciate.

Club Pilates wants to help you move, feel, and live better

f

inding balance in life is a goal most of us continuously try to achieve. The connection between mind, body, and soul is innate, and there are many ways we try to reach it. Fitness is at the heart of that connection, and Club Pilates believes in the philosophy that if we move better physically, we feel better, and in turn we live better. Strengthening the core and spine builds a stronger body and a stronger overall being. And the best part is that anyone of any fitness level can participate.

OUR health

“Going to a gym or traditional Pilates class can be intimidating, but there is no judgment here. We encourage everyone to try it, because we know people will fall in love with it.”

Pilates was invented in the 1920s by German fitness trainer Joseph Pilates. While interned in Britain following World War II, he helped bed-ridden patients exercise by devising resistance systems in their hospital beds. Upon release, he brought the concept to the U.S., and by the 1960s, the Pilates method of stretching, balancing, and strengthening had become popular across the country. Today, Club Pilates has taken that original concept and modernized it using state-of-the-art Reformer machines, as well as TRX, EXO-Chair, springboard, Bosu balls, and more. Club Pilates currently has three locations in Omaha: 156th & Maple, owned by Angelia and Jay Froscheiser; and two locations owned by Lisa and Regi Powell —one at Clocktower Village 32 |

EDGE

and another at Lakeside. Both couples had been separately exploring franchise opportunities and decided Club Pilates was the right fit, but for different reasons. The Powells had owned an insurance agency and wanted a new venture after selling. Lisa was drawn to the idea of fitness and helping to improve lives. Angelia had suffered from neurological health issues and fell in love with Pilates when it helped improve her symptoms. “The idea of bringing Pilates to the masses really appealed to me,” she said. That belief that all fitness levels can participate is at the base of how classes are structured. There are four levels from beginner to the most advanced, and people are encouraged to progress through the levels at their own pace. Multiple types of classes are offered at each level, which promotes a comfort

factor and sense of community knowing everyone in class is in the same boat. “Going to a gym or traditional Pilates class can be intimidating, but there is no judgment here,” Powell said. “We encourage everyone to try it, because we know people will fall in love with it.” Anyone can call or sign-up online to take a complimentary 30-minute intro class, which are offered multiple times a week at each location. After that, memberships are available in a variety of forms: four, eight, or unlimited classes per month, as well as private and semi-private classes. The cost of a class is about one-third less than Pilates classes at other fitness centers. Classes accommodate up to 12 people, and all instructors are certified through the Club Pilates program, which requires 500 hours of education.

Powell and Froscheiser both said the response has been amazing. “People can start to see the difference in their body right away without having to workout intensely,” Powell said. The low impact nature of Pilates is appealing but still effective and efficient. “It’s a great workout by itself, as well as a perfect supplement to other types of fitness,” Froscheiser added. In fact, the method was first incorporated by the New York City Ballet to improve dancers’ strength and flexibility. But what was once considered only for athletes or the affluent is now available and cost-effective for everyone. “I never used to enjoy working out and could never keep a consistent fitness routine,” Froscheiser said. “Pilates is the first workout I’ve found that I enjoy doing and look forward to. I don’t try to make excuses for not going, and my body actually craves it.” Both women are working toward their instructor certifications, and anyone interested in becoming an instructor is welcome to go through Club Pilates’ teacher training sessions at the studios. Above all, Powell and Froscheiser encourage everyone just to try a class. They are always touched by the stories members share of how Pilates has changed lives. “Pilates is truly life changing,” Powell said. “And we are a community of people who supports each other in a vibrant setting that welcomes everyone.”

THE WRITE PLAN

a column on estate and financial planning for everyone

Do you really need an estate planning attorney? By LISA M. LEHAN, J.D.

Y

ou can find a tutorial and a form online for practically everything, so do you really need to hire an attorney to prepare your estate plan? Here are some excuses I’ve heard from people who claim they don’t need an estate plan or think they can handle the preparation of legal documents on their own: We’re not rich . . . My sister knows we want her to raise our kids . . . Aren’t there forms on the internet for that? Have you told yourself the same thing? If you own property, you have an estate. Property includes a car, a house, a bank account, a retirement account, life insurance, etc. Whether your estate is large or small doesn’t determine whether you need an estate plan. You should decide what happens to your property at your death. The alternative is to let your property pass according to state statute, and you may be surprised to learn what the state intestacy statutes require. If you do not designate guardians for minor children in your Will, the court will decide who to name. What happens if multiple family members step up and tell the court they want the job? State statutes set forth priority, and where two or more parties have equal priority, the court will select the person it deems best qualified to serve. Do you want to leave to chance whether a judge will pick the person you would have chosen? Yes, the internet has forms. Do you know what each legal provision

36 |

EDGE

means in those forms? Attorneys can explain legalese in layman’s terms. Do you know how to complete the blank lines? Every estate plan I prepare is customized because I have yet to find clients with the exact same circumstances and objectives. Do you know how to properly execute those forms so that they are valid? Whether a document is recognized under state law is not something your family wants to find out after your incapacity or passing. Do you know how to coordinate the titling of your assets and your beneficiary designations to assure your plan works cohesively? A comprehensive estate plan is more than just the legal documents. Do you understand the tax implications of the forms you are signing? Proper estate planning includes the consideration of income, estate, and inheritance taxes. Is the financial future of your loved ones worth the time and money to plan your estate the right way?

ne of the most innovative restaurants in Omaha is tucked away in a quiet corner of the Metropolitan Community College (MCC) Fort Omaha Campus. The Sage Student Bistro, freshly renovated and helmed by a new chef instructor, has been delighting diners at this location since January 2010. Open Monday – Thursday when classes are in session, the menu changes quarterly and features thoughtful, gorgeous, student-driven prix fixe menus alongside a static menu of elevated dishes designed by chef instructors and executed by second-year culinary students. 40 |

James Davis, recent addition to full-time faculty at MCC’s Institute for Culinary Arts (ICA), is an Omaha native with a penchant for design but a passion for food. While studying architecture and engineering at the University of Nebraska at Omaha, he also worked in the kitchen at Happy Hollow Country Club. When asked what spurred him on to culinary school, he said, “I couldn’t wait to get out of class and get to work.” As do many native Nebraskans, Davis chose to move away, attending Le Cordon Bleu in Scottsdale, Arizona. Family eventually drew him back, and he spent the next several years at various restaurants in Omaha while serving as adjunct instructor at MCC. Working in the restaurant industry can be all-consuming, so Chef Davis and his wife have yet to enjoy a dining experience at The Sage Student Bistro. However, instructing students in the back of the house, encouraging them to see things from different perspectives, and witnessing them learn something new or find their own voice inspires him to keep going. “Sage is a unique

experience for students in that they are racing against the clock to some extent,” he said. “In early lab classes, that urgency isn’t there.” Stakes are higher in the bistro, and diners are the fortunate recipients. Each quarter, students begin researching and discussing ideas for their prix fixe menus. In collaboration with chef instructors, basic concepts such as Sunday Dinner or Springtime in Germany are broken down and then elevated in a cohesive progression of dishes. During the week that Edge photographers visited, the student chef’s prix fixe menu featured hand-crafted butternut squash ravioli laced with harissa in light lemon sauce and a beef wellington that was created by searing petite tenders with the barest hint of Dijon mustard, enveloping the meat in a mushroom duxelles and finally blanketing in the traditional puff pastry. The amuse course featured beets three ways: roasted, sweet pickled and smoked—all topped with bits of tart Granny Smith apple. In addition to learning how to conceptualize, compose, cook and plate, students share their skill and inspiration with customers through occasional live demonstrations during service. Culinarians are educators, encouraging an epicurean approach in which diners slow down and experience a meal with all senses, luxuriating in textures, aromas, and, ultimately, tastes of ingredients

prepared in surprising ways. The dining room provides upscale ambiance, featuring an attractive fireplace with tables and banquettes that can be reconfigured to accommodate different-sized parties. Hospitality students perform front of house duties, including tableside wine service. A wellpriced, simple wine list will not stretch the palate of an oenophile, but corkage is a reasonable ten dollars for those who wish to enhance their meal with a vintage of their own choosing. A creative bread and butter service kicks things off while you peruse the menu. Static dishes are elevated and delicious, but when given the opportunity, take the plunge and order the prix fixe. To end your night on a sweet note, Baking and Pastry students provide an array of desserts. During the the warmer months, diners can enjoy garden views across the com-

mons, as well as the scent of herbs in the planters lining the walkways. In the ICA kitchen, there is always a push to use local ingredients, and it doesn’t get more local than right next door. The close relationship between the Culinary and Horticulture programs spurs creativity on both sides. “Local eating is no longer a trend, it’s a movement,” remarked Davis. “I can ask Tyler if we can grow a particular vegetable, and he and his team will give it a try.” Tyler Magnuson is the Operations Specialist and Culinary Liaison for the Horticulture program at MCC. At harvest, Magnuson brings fresh produce to the kitchen, and chefs find creative ways to use the ingredients, even in small ways such as garnishing plates. “One of the great things about this industry is you can never know everything there is to know about. I read constant-

ly,” shared Davis, noting he was finishing a memoir by famed chef Grant Achatz before passing it along to an ambitious student. To avoid stagnation, he encourages students to explore new ideas and paths. When asked about the future of Sage Student Bistro, Davis smiled and said, “Nothing wild. So much time and passion have contributed to what it is today, I just want to try to maintain what has been built and keep it going.” The bistro caters to all palates and is a splendid way to expand your horizons for an incredibly reasonable price. Come back each quarter to witness a new crop of student chefs bringing fresh, imaginative ideas and a different service experience. You can provide valuable feedback while savoring a fabulous meal and you just might find yourself sampling first bites from a future James Beard Award-winning chef.

Education and inspiration are at the heart of Seven Salon

oCo Chanel once said, “A woman who cuts her hair is about to change her life.” Whether it’s a drastic change or a subtle update, having a great haircut, color, or style invokes feelings of confidence, and confidence is what helps motivate people to make changes in their lives. What makes Seven Salon different is that they aren’t just changing their clients’ lives, they are changing the lives of the stylists, the industry, and the entire Omaha community.

OUR business

Salon owners Shannon Bingham and Nikki Okun recently celebrated 15 years as business partners. Both were working at a small local salon when they realized they shared a dream of opening their own salon and decided to join forces. “We knew we had more to give,” Bingham said. “We wanted to inspire and grow other stylists in a team-based environment.” Frustrated by the lack of confidence from lenders, the women used their own money—Bingham leveraged her home—to purchase an existing salon in Rockbrook Village and later the current location, which they’ve since 52 |

renovated twice. The name Seven Salon stems from the owners’ strong faith and the significance the number seven plays in religious texts. And the mission statement has remained the same since day one: “A place where creativity and inspiration can thrive, driven by a desire to impact the community.” Few employee-based salons still exist, but Seven owes its longevity to understanding and having survived ups and downs in the industry, being diligent and following their business plan, and ensuring their employees are receiving the education necessary to stay current and provide their customers with the

very best. “We’re constantly evolving, making sure we have expertise in all areas,” Bingham said. They also rely on one another, operating more as a family than employer/employees, and Bingham and Okun have clear roles, allowing each other to work their strengths. Stacey Anderson has been a stylist for more than 30 years and said she has been most impressed with the continued education that Seven affords her. “Our industry changes every day, so the way they help us keep up with education is remarkable. I’ve never experienced anything like it.” Bingham is a National Educator for the product

best they can be.” That commitment to education goes well beyond Seven Salon’s employees. Bingham recently applied for a seat on the State Board of Cosmetology. She also spoke in front of the committee for Nebraska Legislative bill LB343, which would change the credentialing and regulation of cosmetology and nail technology, among others. “We didn’t want to lower the number of hours required for cosmetology school, because we want to maintain our high level of excellence,” she said. “Less hours educating students could mean lower quality services in the long run.” In fact, Seven Salon offers more than just hair services. They also offer pedicures, manicures, extensions, air brush

Addressing behavioral issues in children By DR. STEPHEN STINN

Do you or someone you know have a child who struggles with behavioral issues? You are definitely not alone as it is a common issue with kids today. Because of several environmental factors, more and more kids are not getting rid of their infant reflexes. These are reflexes we have as infants and they should typically go away by 6 months of age. Many kids with behavioral issues have what’s called a retained Moro Reflex. This is the same reflex where if you clap near a baby their arms will shoot out, they will startle, and then they will start to cry. It’s necessary to have as a infant but it should go away by about 6-7 months of age. If a child doesn’t get rid of it at that time, regardless of the reason, they typically retain it into school age and beyond. What happens when you have this Moro Reflex is different stimuli are constantly eliciting it and putting your child into a fight or flight state. This startle reflex is constantly going off throughout the day alerting their brain. A slamming locker? Startle reflex. A kid yelling down the hall? Startle reflex. Another student zooming in and out of their line of sight? Startle reflex. Books slammed on desk? Startle reflex. You get the idea! It’s as if someone followed you around all day trying to startle you. Every time you turned a corner, someone was jumping out to scare you. That’s essentially what these kids feel throughout the day. If this were constantly happening to you, is it possible you might have a short fuse? That you might lash out? Every time this reflex goes off, your body sends out more cortisol (stress hormone) and you enter further into a gas pedal, fight or flight state. When you’re in this state, you act much more

instinctually and are more likely to have a behavioral outburst. This is the number one thing I check for when someone presents with behavioral issues in my office. If this is something you think your child might have, when you call the office, mention

this article and you will receive $50 off the initial evaluation. What the initial evaluation entails is a full infant reflex assessment and nerve system testing (to see if your child is indeed in a chronic gas pedal mode). If you have any further questions, by all means call the office to find out more. Our office number is 402.504.4676. Dr. Stephen

ight years ago, Nebraska Writers Collective Executive Director Matt Mason brought the idea of a slam poetry festival to Omaha. Modeled after a similar event in Chicago, the Great Plains chapter of Louder Than a Bomb (LTAB) started in the spring of 2012 with teams from 13 schools. Currently, more than 600 students from 46 schools are involved in LTAB programs that work with students to explore the benefits of creative writing and participate in creative writing activities. The team from Burke High School, made up of sophomores and juniors, have worked on their group and individual poems in preparation to compete in this spring’s competition. Edge: Why did each of you decide to join LTAB? Mack Malone: My passion is creative writing, and I like writing poetry. But I decided to join the team after my English teacher my freshman year recommended it.

Jordan Petersen: I had heard of LTAB and went to a few slam poetry sessions. Then one of my friends said I should join, so I tried it. Natalia Trejo: I want to be an author someday and had been looking for a writing club. I really enjoyed it the first time I attended. Edge: What do you like best about LTAB? Antonia Ralph: I enjoy the coaches we have and really like the competition. Last year I wrote the group poem, but I’ll perform for the first time this year. I’m nervous but am just going to stand up there and do it. I’m in a lot of other activities but have never connected with people the way I have with this group. It makes me excited to come to school on days we meet. Mack: I like sharing my feelings about topics and hearing everyone’s else’s viewpoints too. I also like seeing how people react to my poems. The vulnerability doesn’t bother me. It actually helps people understand me, and I like that. Jordan: I love the people in the group and how close we are. We’re this little family, there to support each other and make sure you do the best job you can. It’s a lot of work but it’s also fun. Natalia: It’s a great feeling when people react to your poem. I like listening to other people’s ideas and being able to portray how you feel with words. I’m also a competition person, so I like winning. Edge: What types of poems do you write? Jordan: Anything I’m passionate about. They’re either very dark or very light and comedic. It allows me to write 60 |

about topics I’m interested in, but in a way that’s not harmful to anyone. I can put my own feelings into a different perspective. It’s a really cool process. Mack: When we do group poems it’s about life and how to enjoy life. The one we’re writing now is about how life is like a plane ride—you don’t completely control it, some people panic over it, etc. Antonia: The group collaborative process is challenging, and we bounce back and forth between topics, but we all liked this group poem idea. Edge: What other activities are you involved in? Mack: I like doing creative things, especially drawing comics. I often draw pictures of the things people talk about in their poems. Natalia: I’m in orchestra and have been swimming competitively for 11 years. I’d like to either go into computer programming or be an author—both have to figure out creative ways to solve problems. Antonia: I’ve been in drama club, book club, and a student ambassador. Someday I’d like to go into interior design. Mack: My grandpa said I should be a politician because I like to talk. I would like to speak for a living and am interested in being an activist of some type. In this club we can talk about our opinions freely. Even if it contradicts someone else’s beliefs, at least we can understand each other.

He’s earned the respect of his Millard South coaches and teammates because “he’s the hardest worker in the room, and he never takes a day off,” according to Head Coach Nate Olson. “When Isaac tells another wrestler to do something, they listen. He leads by example.” When Isaac was a freshman, he earned fifth place at State. As a sophomore, his only losses were to four-time State Champion, James Burks. According to Coach Olson, “After going unblemished his junior year with an Individual State Championship, Dual Team Championship, and State Team Championship, Isaac is now looking forward to a big summer of traveling around and competing in Freestyle and Greco before coming into next year as the pound-for-pound best senior in Nebraska.” Attaining that type of success brings with it attention from the media. After Isaac beat Burks at the

WRESTLING

TO WIN

Josh Trumble • Senior • Millard South High School It’s a long road to a win a state championship, especially when you start all over with a new team. Josh Trumble transferred from Platteview to Millard South as a junior, joining his younger brother Isaac on the varsity wrestling team. He felt welcomed right away. “You come in with open arms and people just accept you for who you are.” However, Josh immediately noticed the difference in expectations. “It’s a winning culture. They always talk about winning. A big thing for me was making the shift from wrestling defensively (trying not to lose) and now I’m wrestling to win. Changing your mindset is a huge thing.” Although Josh went 0-2 in his first tournament for Millard South, he later became an Individual State Medalist (sixth place) his junior year. At that state tournament, Josh and Isaac actually wrestled

Metro tournament his sophomore year, news channels started showing up at school. “It was weird having all the spotlight on me,” he said. “That kind of attention was new for me, so I had to work around it.” When he later lost to Burks at Districts, he realized that he had to keep working hard. “I wasn’t the best I can be, and I’m still not.” Isaac’s brother Josh joined the Millard South varsity team last year. Having two sons on the same team can be stressful for their mom, Julie Trumble, who tries to go back and forth between them. “I never know who to watch,” she says. Their father, who was deployed to Afghanistan for the Army Reserves, was able to fly home for four days to watch the recent State Championship Tournament. It was extra special because he’s recently been recuperating from heart surgery at Walter Reed Memorial Hospital. Isaac credits the Millard South coaches and teammates for always pushing him to improve. “When I see someone else working hard, it makes me want to work even harder.” Having that mentality “makes the whole team better.” His high school coaches believe he’ll have a bright future in college wrestling. Coach Jay Meneely said, “His drive and work ethic have made him one of the best wrestlers in the country.” Coach Joe Ellenberger added, “This kid may write history before it’s all said and done.”

right beside each other. They finished their matches at the same time and the refs raised their hands as winners at the same time. More recently in the 2019 state tournament, Josh finished in third place for his senior year. Millard South won both the State Team Championship and State Duals Championship this year, and Josh is excited to receive his championship ring. Coach Joe Ellenberger believes Josh is a “vocal leader that gives max effort on the mat, in the weight room, and in the practice room. He is the kind of guy that would give his shirt off his back if his teammate needed it. He shows class in victory and defeat, as well as great sportsmanship that is often times lost in this generation.” Josh has focused on his academics as well as wrestling, and after graduation, he plans to major in psychology or criminal justice. “I’d like to be a police officer because I’d like to give back to the community,” he said. He’d also like to come back to the wrestling room some day and be able to give back to the wrestling team like some of the former wrestling champions have done for him. According to Ellenberger, “Josh’s work ethic, ability to overcome adversity, and attitude will carry him far in life.” APRIL 2019
