hree years ago, Bluewater in Valley, NE, was the site of the annual MOBA Street of Dreams. Local builder Majestic Homes featured a 4,300 sq. ft. four-bedroom, five-bathroom story and a half showcase property with multiple lake views. As soon as Teresa Elliott set foot in the home, she fell in love with it. Although she was an existing lake home owner, the privacy and serenity of Bluewater drew her in, and she’s been enjoying her oasis ever since.

“When I walked in, it was an instant wow factor with all the windows looking out onto the lake,” Elliott said. “And I adored being able to open those up onto the patio.” The windows slide open between the living room and patio, which includes a fireplace, built-in grill and TV, and a retractable phantom screen between the outdoor seating area and the rest of the patio, creating a complete extension of the entertainment area. One of Elliott’s other favorite features is the bookcase in the den that opens directly into the master bathroom for a secluded connection between the den and the master suite. It’s those types of details that she appreciates about the

home and Majestic’s design focus on craftsmanship and the large living spaces. Its transitional style, carried throughout the home, makes it appealing to a variety of personal tastes. Elliott did make a few changes to the home, including the addition of a Thermador wine fridge, a large built-in bar off the kitchen, a fireplace in the master suite, and new light fixtures. The home includes all Eurowood cabinets, quartz countertops and tile floors in the kitchen, an intricate curved staircase, iron front doors, and a floor to ceiling stone fireplace in the great room, which has 24-ft. ceilings. Elliott admitted the home’s kitchen is her favorite kitchen she’s ever had, with its large waterfall style island, foil-wrapped cabinets, slate tile backsplash, and walk-in pantry where she houses her coffee station. The second level loft serves as a casual gaming and bar area, much like a basement would, with a pool table, wet bar, home theater, and balcony that overlooks the lake. Elliott said it’s where her family likes to gather when everyone is home for the holidays. For more formal entertaining, such as work functions, she utilizes the main indoor/outdoor areas. “I entertain all the time and spend pretty much all summer outside,” she added. Convenience is another important element throughout the home’s floor plan. The main floor includes laundry, a workout room, large drop zone, and a shower room directly off a separate entrance from the lake. “The open concept

allows for great entertaining and comfortable living with all activities on one floor,” Elliott said. All four bedrooms are on the main floor, but the master is completely separate from the others, so it is its own private retreat. The neutral dark and light colors throughout the home are soft and soothing, but one can easily add splashes of color with accessories. Elliott recommends Bluewater for anyone interested in a lake home who is looking for the ultimate in relaxation and entertainment, whether it’s as a

primary or secondary home. The lake does allow jet skis, but she said it’s not as crowded as other lake communities. “The mix of urban and lakefront living is perfect,” she said. “I love this particular lot because it’s directly across from trees, so you don’t look out onto anyone else. It really is an oasis, and water serves as therapy. Once you get here, you don’t want to leave.” For additional information or to schedule a private showing, contact Teresa Elliott with NextHome Signature Real Estate, 402-690-1573, Teresa@ElliottOmaha.com.

a
major draw to any vacation resort is having access to a luxurious pool. So why not create that amenity right in your own backyard? According to Jake Lavagnino with Aspire Aquatic Architecture, your backyard is an extension of your home. If a pool is something you’ve considered, he and his team can help identify your needs and create an environment that fits your objectives and space to enhance your lifestyle.

An Omaha native, Lavagnino spent a lot of time in the art room while attending Papillion-LaVista High School. Several of his family members were architects, which inspired his sense of design and creativity. He worked his way into landscaping with the intention of one day owning his own business, which he accomplished in 2017 when he started Aspire. “I’ve always aspired to do something great, and I had never heard the term ‘aquatic architecture’ before, so the name really appealed to me,” he explained. His approach is to design wellthought-out pool environments and go above and beyond to make sure the client is happy at the end of the project. He starts by sitting down with the client and discussing what they want out of a pool: a place for kids to swim and dive? A shallow pool for floating? A pool/ spa combination? “It’s not about what your neighbor has, it’s about your own lifestyle and a design that meets that functionality,” Lavagnino said. He explained that pools are just like houses: they have a living area, rec area, and lounge area. People often think a pool has to be a large, rectangular shape, but he can design any shape to fit any size space. “I correlate our designs with architecture in order to give the pool an elevated look and feel, not just a traditional pool.” He also hand-sketches the initial design himself. “It starts to give the storyline of the project,” he added. Once an initial sketch is approved, Lavagnino sends the design to an architect who creates a 3D rendering. “It’s amazing how closely the final project will look like the rendering, and once the client sees it, then the excitement builds,” he said. Once construction begins, Lavagnino helps the client with any additional ideas they might be able to incorporate, such as built-in seating in the pool, fire pits surrounding the pool, or rock landscaping. Educating the client on the process and the materials is a major part of his

job. Pool construction is a different type of beast,” Lavagnino said. However, he’s happy to move clients through the process. “In the past, I’ve seen my clients try to be lone rangers and acquire their own materials—some of which have incredibly long lead times or aren’t pool-suitable.” Lavagnino has learned from experience, and he encourages clients to trust his expertise and the process itself. Projects can take anywhere from eight weeks to several months, depending on size and complexity, and of course, weather. “I’m pretty resilient and not easily discouraged by weather,” he said. Aspire will even tent projects when necessary. “We don’t rush through anything
and hope our clients value the time it takes to do the project correctly. Building a pool is like choreography—there is a sequence of movements in a staged process and when all the pieces come together, the final result is beautiful!” The Midwest can be the last region to adopt coastal trends, but fortunately, he said there are pool trends that he’s finally seeing in the Midwest. “As we progress with the concrete pool market, infinity edge pools are starting to become popular. We’ve also done a lounge reef in 12 inches of water, allowing people to still be involved in the pool but not fully submerged in water.” Lavagnino never does the exact same design twice so the variety of and demand for
concrete pools has been good for business. More clients are building concrete pools, which last up to 50 years, rather than vinyl liner pools which can require repairs after 10 to 15 years. Aspire can also phase a project so that clients can easily add features when ready. Strong communication and relationship building are at the heart of Lavagnino’s company. In fact, he doesn’t consider a project finished until he receives a referral from that client. “What I value most is that the client is happy and truly enjoys what we’ve designed and built,” he said. “Whether it’s new construction or an existing home, the design will always look like it was meant to be there from the beginning.”

THE WRITE PLAN
a column on estate and financial planning for everyone
Don’t miss a new opportunity to save capital gain taxes By LISA M. LEHAN, J.D.
D
o your investments have unrealized gains which you are considering “harvesting”? Or are you currently contemplating the sale of appreciated real estate or business interests?
If so, the 2017 Tax Act offers a considerable tax break for investors who reinvest capital gains into new Qualified Opportunity Funds (“QOF”). These rules offer three potential taxplanning benefits: deferred capital gain, reduced capital gain, and exclusion of appreciation of the new investment from income. First, you can defer paying the tax on the realized gain until the earlier of the time the QOF is sold or December 31, 2026. Second, the amount of the deferred capital gain you then recognize is reduced by 10% if you hold the QOF for five years or by 15% if you hold the QOF for seven years (by the end of 2026). Third – and the potentially most powerful benefit – if you remain invested in the QOF for at least 10 years, any gain you generate on the QOF would be tax-free. To qualify for this incredible planning opportunity, there are three general requirements. First, you must realize a capital gain from the sale or exchange of a capital asset with an unrelated party after December 31, 2017, and before December 31, 2026. Unlike 1031 “like-kind” exchanges, there is no
24 |
EDGE
requirement that the capital gain arise from like property. Second, you must reinvest the gain in a QOF within 180 days of the transaction that triggered the gain. Third, the QOF must invest at least 90% of its assets in Qualified Opportunity Zone property, which includes stock in certain corporations, an interest in certain partnerships or LLCs, and tangible property used in a trade or business of a QOF that substantially improves the property. To illustrate: if you have a $50,000 gain from selling an asset and reinvest the gain in a QOF, after seven years the taxable amount of the gain would be $42,500 ($50,000 less the 15% reduction of $7,500). If the initial $50,000 grows to $100,000 over 10 years of being invested in the QOF, you could take that $50,000 gain ($100,000 less the initial investment of $50,000) entirely tax-free. If you recently sold an asset and realized a capital gain, or if you are considering selling assets soon, consider whether this tax planning opportunity is right for you and then work with a tax lawyer to take advantage of it.

Make life easier with Pink Shoe Cleaning Crew

f there’s one thing everyone has in common, it’s feeling like there’s not enough time in the day to get everything done. When pressed for time, personal tasks often fall to the bottom of the list, and cleaning the house is no exception. Yet having a clean home fosters a feeling of calm and allows you to enjoy being home during what little free time you have. Helping others achieve that is what led Zach Stephens to acquire Pink Shoe Cleaning Crew.

Stephens has been an entrepreneur since the early 2000s when he joined his family’s industrial recycling company. Within a year of joining, he had begun the work of building out a new service for the company, which became the prime focus of their work for the next decade. Unfortunately, when a family member became ill, Stephens initiated the idea of selling the company to allow him time to help the family member and as a way for him to move to a new industry he could call his own. Because of Stephens’ love for homes—including the fact he designed and built two of his own homes—a service business focused on homes was the ideal choice and is what led to him contacting Pink Shoe in early 2017. Pink Shoe was founded in 2010, had grown quickly, and had the quality reputation Stephens had maintained with his last company. The company was not for sale at the time, but it proved to be ideal timing for both parties and a great opportunity for Pink Shoe to continue to grow. Stephens spent the first two years focused on providing the highest level of customer service and building a strong culture within the company. “I wanted a solid, respectable company because we’re going into people’s private spaces, so we want to have the highest quality people cleaning their homes,” he said. That culture based on respect flows

directly between employees too. “There’s more communication and connection between our employees, creating a level playing field,” he said. “It allows people to be themselves, contribute ideas, and have a sense of ownership.” Pink Shoe has a crew of about 30 cleaners, and General Manager Michelle Hall said she looks for people who are “outgoing, friendly, and willing to learn.” Even if an applicant looks good on paper, they always go with their gut feeling to make sure they are the right fit for the company. The draw for the employees is that Stephens has not only achieved that culture of respect, but it’s also like a family. “It’s not just a job, it feels like a family and is very family oriented,” said Field Manager Sereena Shamblen. That feeling of family extends into their clients’ homes, taking a team approach and backing each other’s work. “I’m a perfectionist, so I love to make 32 |

people’s houses look perfect,” said Amy Gerwitz. “We work together to make it better.” Pink Shoe charges per room and uses a “top to bottom” approach, starting at the ceiling corners and cleaning all the way down to the baseboards, including ceiling fans, doorknobs, window frames, blinds, cabinet fronts, the inside of microwaves, making beds, and polishing stainless steel appliances. “We clean areas at no extra charge that customers didn’t even realize needed cleaning,” Hall said. Their main cleaning product is a green certified sanitizer and anti-viral product. “The safety of everyone in our homes is a top concern,” she added. Pink Shoe currently focuses 100% on residential cleanings, offering recurring schedules as well as one-time cleanings for their customers’ varied needs. When calling to discuss service options Pink Shoe is able to go room-by-room with
you, and offers pricing based on your specific needs. “The goal is to find a way to help each customer get a sense of calm back to their life, and ensuring the cleaning and budget both work is key to that outcome,” Stephens said. So, is it worth it to have your home cleaned on a regular basis? Stephens said, “Having your house clean gives you back more than a few hours you didn’t have; it often gives you back an entire weekend of feeling like you have some control over things. We care greatly about our community and look forward to getting further involved with it as we grow. The opportunity to be a locally owned company in this area is a privilege that we do not take for granted, and we both appreciate and enjoy each opportunity we get to talk with people interested in freeing up some of their time by having their home cleaned.”

Every spring and fall, the Interiors Joan and Associates design team treks to High Point, N.C. to attend the High Point International Furniture Market. The world’s largest home furnishings trade show is like fashion week for furniture. With over 180 buildings and 12 million square feet of showroom space, it is the place to be to see the latest in home design trends, colors, and furnishing debuts. While some trends and new product collections never make it to the mainstream, the design team has collected their favorite new styles that will make a lasting impact on our region. Here’s what’s hot and what’s not for interior design this spring!
1
Wicker and Caning: There is a definite resurgence of interest in these woven wonders from yesteryear! Think pliable twigs or other materials that are woven together to create patterns and designs or even entire frames and sides of furniture pieces. The caning was present in detailing on casegoods and as the frames of chairs and tables, as well. Carved detailing and interesting hardware on casegoods: Dimensional designs give wooden pieces movement, interest, and life. These statement pieces are perfect in almost any setting in the home. Furniture lines: These are taking a turn toward more traditional styling in look and design influence. These highly sophisticated pieces are updated with simpler details while maintaining the classic vibe we all know and love.

Color: Grays are warming up; and now colors, tones, stains, and finishes are moving toward a warmer, browner palette. Update your own gray space by introducing warmer toned accessories, paint colors, pillows and artwork. Contrast: High contrast is always striking, and the newest way to use the design is by painting or wall covering your walls with DARK even BLACK colors. It seems as though the cryptic color could be too intimidating to use in this way, but we promise the end result will be a good dramatic. Tables: Cluster tiered tables to create a layered cocktail table that has dimension and interest. Little drink “scatter” tables are also a functional and beautiful trend right now! Utilize them to give guests a convenient place to set a cocktail while you entertain.

Vertigo and dizziness
By DR. STEPHEN STINN
Vertigo is a sensation of spinning dizziness. If you or someone you know struggles with chronic vertigo or dizziness you may have heard of the vestibular system. The vestibular system is your balance system and it resides in your inner ear. It consists of three semicircular canals in each ear that are filled with fluid that allow you to know where your head is in space. Sometimes, there can be an imbalance in the vestibular system where one side is much stronger than the other. If this happens, your body can have the feeling of being dizzy and off-center. If one of the three canals on either side is weaker than the others, this can also contribute to the feeling of dizziness. The easiest way to determine if someone has an imbalance in their vestibular system is seeing if they consistently hold their head tilted to one side or rotated to one side. If you want to test your vestibular system, try to balance with one foot in front of the other (heel to toe) and once you feel stable, close your eyes. Next, stand on one foot, and once you feel 38 |

stable, close your eyes. This test removes your vision so that you rely solely on your vestibular system. If you can’t balance with your eyes closed, it’s probably because your vestibular system needs balanced and is too weak on one side. If you consistently fall to one side while doing these tests, to the right for example, that generally means the right vestibular system is weaker than the left. If you have any other questions or would like a phone consultation so you can ask more specific questions about your case, please call the office at 402.504.4676. I look forward to helping you! – Dr. Stephen Stinn

utterfish, the most recently opened of the trio of restaurants under the Meadowlark Management umbrella, offers fun, fresh, and flavorful bites in an eclectic, open space right in the heart of the Blackstone District. Matt Carper and Matt Moser are co-owners of the three hot spots, bringing their love of quality ingredients cooked with care to discerning Omaha diners. Carper and Moser met a decade ago while working at Blue Sushi, part of the Flagship group. At the time, Jose Vega, an enthusiastic, talented sushi chef, was busily working his way up through the ranks, quietly creating flavor-packed, creative dishes with great fan following on behalf of the establishment.

At Butterfish, the three are collaborating on an Asian dining concept in which Moser, as Executive Chef, effortlessly marries his traditional French culinary training with fresh local ingredients and an Asian flair, creating unique dishes with quality ingredients that keep patrons returning for more. Vega heads up the sushi bar, rolling out light, well-balanced fare with names befitting the quirky nature of the place. The intriguing Green Worm, spicy No Way Jose, and perfectly balanced Firefly rolls are currently featured on the menu. When possible, the chefs source all ingredients from local farmers and purveyors. “Dean (from Plum Creek farms) delivers chicken weekly – so we know it is fresh,” remarked Carper. “High quality ingredients bring the best flavor, and the closer they are grown the better.” Flavor Country Farms provides locally grown mushrooms and microgreens, with some greens grown specifically for Butterfish based on desired flavor objectives. For example, micro cilantro or wasabi greens pull double duty on the creative plates, making efficient use of visual, olfactory, and flavor profiles. Local beef, chicken, pork, honey, and produce are also sought out and coveted by the kitchens at Butterfish. Moser preserves abundant produce, making it available during the dearth of winter, simultaneously creating new and interesting flavor profiles that add just the right pop to a particular dish, evoking summer when the wind is howling. Because Moser’s kitchen and Vega’s sushi bar use local ingredients, both chefs have the opportunity to be creative and change the menu seasonally, collaboratively developing new ideas with evolving flavor profiles. Working closely with local purveyors makes it easy to showcase seasonable ingredients at their peak, and cross-utilizing ingredients and flavor profiles is both efficient and effective in maintaining a cohesive menu for diners. Variations on traditional kimchi often accompany dishes, perking up local palates with interesting fermented flavor combinations, most resulting from locally grown produce. Carper’s current favorite dishes include the outstanding Cashew Chicken, and also the Firefly Roll, which he describes as, “A bit like tuna poke atop of an avocado roll.” In passing, he described the egg drop soup, a seemingly simple dish, “To start, the chicken consume (stock) takes over twelve hours. Chef Moser uses fresh local eggs and the resulting flavor is ridiculous.” A full bar provides beer, sake, and signature cocktails, all

complimenting the flavors found in the dishes. Happy hour is a great time to try something new, such as the Sunset Sangria, a stunning drink that marries seasonal sake and fizzy rose’, or a Coconut Mojito, a tasty twist on the classic rum cocktail. Both drinks are gorgeous and perfect for enjoying on the patio with friends. High quality, fun food deserves a happy home, and the space Butterfish occupies is effortlessly cool. Paintings by Andrea Stein grace the walls with quirky, delightful depictions of animals most Omahans can only see at the zoo. To maintain the clean, Asian aesthetic, Carper, Moser and Vega elected to keep the existing concrete wall, providing both visual and tactile texture. Translucent Soji panels enclose both the floating bar piece and the cozy, private booths that mark the west side of the space. The booths evoke the feel of traditional Asian tea rooms, seating ten diners comfortably in a semi-private, yet airy space. Local makers at Bench created the stacked plywood “rice paper” that envelops the bottom of the bar and is also echoed in the hostess stand. The playlist creates a Friday feel any day of the week -Carper said they play a lot of 80s and 90s hip hop, which perfectly complements the casual vibe. Reservations are recommended, and plenty of free parking awaits your visit to Butterfish and the Blackstone neighborhood. However, don’t let a lack of reservation keep you from visiting. The cocktail and sushi bar seats are first come, first serve, so do yourself a favor and make time for a Butterfish visit this summer – cocktails and nosh on the patio await!

OUR passion

Bread for the Journey helps make passion projects come to life
assion comes in many forms. It often arises when someone sees a need that isn’t being met. Everyday, people generate ideas for ways to enrich our community but often face hurdles—primarily financial—to fully develop their vision. But a group of volunteers that belong to the Omaha Chapter of Bread for the Journey has made it their mission to raise donations and help individuals turn their passion projects into a reality. Bread for the Journey’s Board of Directors, Delana Rauterkus, Laura Roccaforte, Marc Ferguson, and Kathleen Berg, were first introduced to the organization during a leadership program they attended called Bringing Spirit to Leadership, which is based on the book How Then Shall We Live by Wayne Muller. The concept is simple: support those who seek to uplift the community and do so with trust and generosity. The volunteers decided to start an Omaha Chapter and have been instrumental in
helping seed numerous individuals and organizations for the past six years. Not only is the concept simple, but the process is as well. There is no formal grant application and you don’t have to be an established 501(c)(3) non-profit organization. In fact, many individuals use their grant money to establish that status. Most of the grantees learn about Bread for the Journey through word of mouth and are invited to attend an informal meeting. The grantee shares their idea and plan with the Board, answers

any questions, and then steps out of the room while the Board discusses the project. If they decide to award a grant, a check is written on the spot and given to the grantee. “We look for whether or not they have passion in what they want to do and enough of a vision to accomplish it,” Rauterkus explained. Trust is at the core of the belief system for the organization and the volunteers themselves, calling part of what they do building “trust muscles.” The board trusts people before they even know them, which in turn helps foster that trustworthiness long term. In fact, once a grant is awarded, Bread for the Journey doesn’t require the grantee to provide a report on how they spend the money. “We trust whole heartedly that they will do something wonderful with the grant,” Roccaforte added. “All we ask is that they come back and speak at our annual fundraising event.” That event is held in October and is the primary fundraising event for Bread for the Journey. “Our donors are like-minded in their desire to support individuals who have the drive to do something that makes a difference in the community,” Rauterkus said. To date,
they have awarded a total of $30,000 to 22 grantees. The grants range in size from $500 up to $3,000 with the average grant right at $1,500, and they award four grants per year. One of their recent grants was awarded to Kinesha Roach with O.U.R. Gathering Place (see story in the April 2019 issue of Edge). Roach shared her mission with the Board to host community meals for families with special needs children. “Bread for the Journey’s support was meaningful to me because they were willing to invest in countless families,” Roach said. She used the grant to fund an O.U.R. Gathering Place Easter egg hunt and lunch, to purchase much needed office equipment, and it will go toward the organization’s upcoming oneyear anniversary event. “By them pledging their finances to the vision of O.U.R. Gathering Place, success has happened. Bread for the Journey helped to alleviate the burden of providing a memorable event for special needs families.” Cheri Dickmeyer with FIT Girl, Inc. (see story in the August 2018 issue of Edge) was also a grantee of Bread for the Journey. She used the funds to create a website and market her services for empowering girls through friendship and
fitness. She said Bread for the Journey was the first organization she was able to share her story with and ask for help. “They believed in me and my mission and were incredibly supportive,” she said. “It’s imperative to have a strong support system and surround yourself with those who believe in you and cheer you on. Bread for the Journey gave me hope and the confidence needed to push forward.” Bread for the Journey is truly “bringing spirit to leadership” to Omaha. Everyone involved in the organization, from the Board members to the donors and the grantees all want to extend community as far as they can. “Every day there are people driven to make a difference in the community, and we are just one step in the process to get it off the ground,” Rauterkus said. “If you have an idea, don’t be afraid to reach out. Even if your idea isn’t totally formed, we can help with that. We are blessed to have the opportunity to support these individuals who have a desire to make a difference in our community.” To find out more about Bread for the Journey, read about their stories, and to make a donation, visit www.breadforthejourneyomaha.org.

particular talent often runs in a family, which happens to be the case for 9-year-old Eliza Turman. Her mother, Kim, was an All-American gymnast at the University of Nebraska Lincoln. After just four years in the sport, the fourth grader from Fire Ridge Elementary has already achieved a Level 7, soon to be Level 8, which is an uncommon feat at her age.

and watching the gymnasts from other gyms.
Eliza: I was taking dance classes at Premier [Gymnastics] and wanted to try it. I was always doing cartwheels at home anyway.
Edge: What are the different levels for gymnastics?
Kim: She decided to give it a try and then she ended up loving it. Edge: What made you stick with it? Eliza: It’s really fun and I get to hang out with my friends. Edge: What events do you compete in? Eliza: All of them—beam, floor, uneven bars, and vault. My favorite is floor because of the dancing involved. Once a week we do dance as part of practice. Edge: When did you win your first gold medal? Eliza: I think my second year, and I’ve won medals in all events since then. I’m way better now than when I started! Edge: What is your favorite aspect of the sport? Eliza: I like going to the competitions
Kim: There are 10 levels for USA Gymnastics. She’s almost at a level 8, and there aren’t many 9-year-olds at that level. She’s also in the TOPs (Talent Opportunity Program) for ages 7-10. They teach a good basis for strength, flexibility, and fundamentals so they can progress through levels more quickly. Eliza: Usually it’s middle schoolers at that level. Edge: How do you handle frustration, such as when you’re learning a new skill? Eliza: I practice the skill on the floor, or if it’s beam, I practice on a lower beam. If I fall, I get back up and keep trying. I also go over my words in my head: post, point, lift, go, push, hands, feet. I say it over and over. Edge: How often do you practice? Eliza: Four hours a day, five days a week.
Edge: Do you practice at home too? Eliza: I do cartwheels at home all the time! We also have a balance beam in the living room and a bar with mats in the dining room. People probably think our house looks crazy! Edge: What do you like to do when you’re not at the gym? Eliza: I like to hang out with my friends and make crafts. Lately we’ve been making lots of slime! Edge: What are your goals with gymnastics? Eliza: My goal is to make the national team and do gymnastics in college. Right now, I’m working on a Yurchenko skill on the vault, and I’m pretty close to getting it. Edge: What makes you most proud about Eliza? Kim: She’s pretty incredible; strong and self-disciplined. But she also loves to laugh and have fun. It’s a neat combination. Eliza: And I’m a hard worker in school too!

SWING FOR THE
STARS
Kaitlyn Hanna | Freshman | Westside High School BY SHELLY NOSBISCH It’s been quite a freshman year for Kaitlyn Hanna. She was the first female golfer to win State for Westside High School, the first freshman in Class A to win State in 33 years, only the third freshman in 44 years to win the Metro tournament, and the first freshman to win Class A Metro and State in the same year. On top of that, Kaitlyn was also recently named one of five finalists of the prestigious Omaha Sports Commission Awards, Female Athlete of the Year. She has been named to the Super State, All State, and All Metro teams, and in addition to her golfing achievements, she also played on the state qualifying varsity basketball team, all while holding a cumulative 3.96 GPA. Quite a freshman year, indeed. Instead of basking in her accomplishments, Kaitlyn recruited her golf teammates as she started the Warrior Girls Golf Camp for girls in third to

eighth grades. She wanted to give back to her community and teach other girls how to golf, so she solicited donations from local businesses and non-profits to help break down the financial barrier for girls who wouldn’t otherwise be able to afford it. The camp was held at Miracle Hill golf course on May 4th and 79 girls from the Omaha area attended. Kaitlyn got her first real set of golf clubs at age four. Her dad helped direct the Cox Classic, so Kaitlyn had the opportunity to be around pro golfers, even hosting a golfer in their home for six years. In 2016, the family went to Augusta for the Drive, Chip and Putt National Finals. She

cherishes the memory, and said, “Not everyone gets to go to the Masters. It’s the most unbelievable golf course in the world.” Westside golf coach Barry Glanzer said, “Kaitlyn is the ultimate athlete. She not only has the physical tools, but her mind is exceptionally strong. She is confident, yet humble.” This past year, Kaitlyn beat the school record (75) and then went on to beat her own school record four more times, setting the record at 70. When asked about future goals, Kaitlyn replied, “This summer I want to break 70, become more consistent with my swing, and work on one-putting. If I stay present and focus on smaller goals, the future will take care of itself.”
FOR THE LOVE OF
THE GAME Zach Kuo | Freshman | Elkhorn High School BY SHELLY NOSBISCH Despite earning runner-up in State tennis singles as a freshman at Elkhorn High School (EHS), Zach Kuo has stayed humble. He keeps the focus on teamwork and supporting his teammates. “Our team is just a great team,” he said. “Not many teams have the ability to stay together as one and surround each other even though we might be losing. That’s something really different about this team.” Zach comes from a tennis-loving family. His father played tennis in high school, and his older sister, Kristal, was second in the state when she played for EHS. Zach spends most of his free time on the court, whether playing with friends, practicing with his sister on the weekends, or teaching his younger brother, Max. His mom loves watching him play, but she says “singles are very stressful because it’s just my kid against the other kid. But doubles are more relaxing.” In the off-season, Zach travels to USTA tournaments around the country. He especially enjoyed traveling to Texas last summer for Zonals, a national team tournament. “It’s fun to have teammates for the support. And after we play tennis, we just hang out at the hotel or go to the pool.” After a rough tournament season last year, he’s focused on improving this summer. “That motivates me to work on conditioning and my mental game.” Off the court, Zach is also on Student Council. They meet three times a week to plan charity events such as the Mr. EHS pageant, which donates the proceeds to the Make-A-Wish Foundation. Their most recent project has been selling lanyards to raise money for flood victims. According to Elkhorn tennis Coach Holtz, Zach has the tennis smarts to go far. “What sets Zach apart is his positive mindset. He doesn’t overanalyze when things are challenging. His in-game strategy makes him so hard to beat. Zach is the most skilled player I have ever worked with.” Zach has big dreams for the future. He hopes to play for a D-1 team and make it as far as he can into the NCAA tournament, but he also wants to continue his success at EHS. “I want to win every state championship from now on.”
