LETTER from the EDITOR

It’s been

an enjoyable summer filled with endless activities with friends and family. Some of the Edge staff vacationed to Big Cedar Lodge for a chance to relax and recharge with new ideas for the magazines. But what stood out most was our ability to connect and feel like family. Each of the businesses featured in this issue have family at the heart of what they do, and we’re grateful to share their stories with you.

REACH US We want to hear from you. Ideas, suggestions, compliments and critiques, send them to us at Kathy@EdgeMagazine.com

West Gate Bank is a local family-owned business with 11 branches in Omaha and Lincoln, including its newest in Northwest Omaha. The bank’s growth is testament to its commitment to employees and customers. In fact, the company rebranded with the tagline “our interest is you” to emphasize its family culture. Our passion feature shines a light on Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Nebraska, whose mission is to care for its members and employees. The company can be considered a model for its commitment to fostering a culture of diversity and inclusion and empowering its employees to participate in activities that matter most to them. One of the highlights every issue is the youth feature. I’m always amazed at the young entrepreneurs we have in our community. Sow at Home is a family business run by three sisters—Eliza, Evelynn, and Everley White. Together they sew cuddly pillows in fun fabrics complete with an inspirational message sewn onto each one. For every pillow they sell, they donate a pillow to a child in foster care so that child knows they are cared for and loved. Whether you have a date night on the patio at Capri restaurant, a sea breeze cocktail at Spezia, or get tickets to this year’s Shadow Ridge Music Festival Sept. 9th to see Omaha’s 311, there’s still plenty of summer left to enjoy with everyone you consider family. Sitting on more than an acre lot in Bluewater, a Valley, NE, lakeside community with nearly 250 acres of water and over seven miles of sandy beaches, the California-contemporary home is what many might consider a modern masterpiece. With an abundant amount of indoor and outdoor living space, the home boasts four bedrooms and five bathrooms along with endless entertainment spaces, including an expansive sandy beach with almost 300 feet of lake frontage. While the pristine details inside are certainly worthy of recognition, the outdoor living is equally breathtaking. “When my wife Laura and I first came up with the design for the home, we knew we wanted to incorporate a lot

of indoor-outdoor living, which is why we have two sets of 18-foot panoramic doors extending throughout our kitchen and great room that can open up to the patio and pool area in the backyard to give us a really unique entertaining space,” Falcone said. By opening up the doors, the Falcones gain an additional 5,000 square feet of outdoor living. The patio space includes a pergola with built-in bar, large sport pool with an 18foot sun shelf, hot tub, built in grill and service area, two fire pits, and an 85-inch TV. Especially convenient is the home’s cabana bath. Instead of tracking in water or sand, the Falcones and their guests can enter the designated bathroom right from the pool and patio area. The room even includes a shower and washer and dryer—perfect for wet suits and towels after a day spent on the lake. Another important outdoor element for the Falcones is located right above the patio off the second story loft—a 1,000 square foot uncovered concrete deck with glass railing, which includes a 12-foot long firepit situated around an expansive seating area and a bar overlooking the water. While some people in Nebraska might 14 |

believe they can only use outdoor living space a few months out of the year, Falcone said this couldn’t be further from the truth. “If you do it right, you can use your outdoor living year-round. We have phantom screens to keep the bugs out and heaters and firepits to keep us warm in the winter. We can use our space during every season.” Although there are the standard kitchen and master bath trends that clients desire, Falcone said maximizing outdoor living and entertainment is by far the most popular trend among his clients who often share his same style and preferences. In fact, many of his clients have some of the same features he incorporated into his own custom home, like the automated patio screens and panoramic doors opening up to the poolside. “People want to use their outdoor space and enjoy the outside view as much as possible,” Falcone said. Especially when they live somewhere as beautiful as Bluewater, which Falcone said is certainly one of the most alluring aspects of his own property. Since moving into the custom build in December 2021, Falcone has become especially fond of one area of the home

in particular. Dubbed “the man cave,” Falcone’s garage houses a pool table, TVs, video games, and a dart board, providing the perfect hangout spot. Equipped with a glass garage door at the back of the mancave, the lake is once again within sight. While entertaining friends in the space, Falcone enjoys rolling up the back door to let the fresh breeze in. When it comes to his business, helping others build their dream home is Falcone’s main goal. The process involves a lot of brainstorming with clients about their dreams, wants, and needs to come up with a finalized plan. “When I first sit down with a client, I remind them that this is a partnership. I emphasize that this will take a year to build a home and at least another year to take care of warranty stages. I try to prepare them for what the project will entail.” Approaching a monumental 30-year anniversary, Falcone looks forward to tackling each new large-scale custom home project that comes his way, while enjoying his own beautiful home, too. THE ART OF WALLCOVERINGS Story by EDGE CONTRIBUTOR Photos courtesy of INTERIORS JOAN AND ASSOCIATES

Design is about constant change and creating a fresh look. One way to add character to a room is by adding wallcoverings. Wallcoverings can display texture, pattern, and color with benefits in design and function. This design element can be displayed in different forms including wood veneer, vinyl, fabric, or even a mural. Using wallcoverings on your interior spaces is a great way to personalize your home. Wallcoverings can brighten a dark room, customize a space, provide the perfect backdrop for art, or set the theme for your space. They can give texture to a wall that paint is just not able to provide. If you want to add artistic flare or depth and charm to a room, wallcoverings help to achieve this goal as well. The use of wallcoverings is not just beneficial to the enhancement visually and aesthetically. With the right selection, high traffic areas such as hallways, entry ways, and bathrooms can be easier

to maintain. The use of wallcoverings can also help acoustically by absorbing the noise from another room or keeping the sound in a particular space. There are many nuances to keep in mind when choosing the best option for your room or space. What is the overall feel? How bold you want to go? How many walls need to be covered? How much light is coming into the room? The professional designers at Interiors Joan and Associates have perfected the art of finding the best option to finish your

space. This is accomplished by staying up to date on the latest trends and discovering a look that will suit you and your lifestyle. West Gate Bank’s commitment to community

hen a company provides employees with support and flexibility, it creates a work environment that allows individuals to grow. Ensuring employee needs are being cared for is imperative to job satisfaction, whether working remotely or in the office. When West Gate Bank recognized its potential for growth, the business knew success was dependent upon extending the values created in Lincoln into the Omaha market. No matter an individual’s position or location, West Gate Bank ensures every employee feels valued, creating a culture built on trust, comradeship, and a passion to help its community. The family-feel culture goes beyond employee gratification and positive team spirit. Established in 1968, West Gate Bank was purchased in 1980 by President and CEO Carl Sjulin and his family. With over 200 employees and 11 branches between Lincoln and Omaha, the family-owned bank serves its community in ways other than simply lending money and specializing in mortgage. To emphasize where its values lie, West Gate Bank rebranded its

tagline—“our interest is you”—to place focus on the customer rather than the bank’s services. Trust, equality, and respect pave the way that West Gate Bank builds relationships with employees and customers. Kristi Thornton is the Senior Vice President, Retail Market Manager of Omaha and leads the bank’s retail team with 11 years of experience. oversees the bank’s commercial lending side. Dittenber spent 27 years in banking and began his career with West Gate Bank nearly 12 years ago. Both Thornton and Dittenber relocated to Omaha when market locations were acquired in 2018. As the bank continues to grow in Omaha and prepares for the opening of its upcoming location on 177th and Maple, the two exemplify their leadership through a matched mentality that collaboration and teamwork will make the strongest culture between all locations. Migrating from a large business to a small one can offer challenges surrounding company culture, but West Gate Bank triumphs these. Because many employees came from different banks, West Gate Bank uses their versatile backgrounds by encouraging them to voice their ideas. Creating more efficiency among team members, Dittenber said having a mix of people with different experiences only makes West Gate Bank stronger. As a locally-owned business, West Gate Bank offers everything a national bank provides with a personal touch—a devotion to its community through direct communication and a willingness to help everyone. Whether it’s walkin traffic or a phone call to the bank, West Gate Bank ensures every customer knows exactly with whom they’re working. Customers will always talk to a banker within their city who knows the marketplace and can better understand their needs. “You’re not going to call our phone number and get someone out of state who can’t relate to you or understand what challenges you might be going through,” Thornton said. She recalled a previous experience at a larger bank where tellers were not allowed to answer the phones due to a lack of trust. Regardless of someone’s position, the teams at West Gate Bank synergize their goals to benefit all branches—not just their own. Through its invigorating culture, the bank often encourages employees to make their own decisions when uncertainty arises. Thornton said this incentive drives employees to trust their judgement. “We tell people to do what they feel is right for the bank,” she added. “We empower them to make that decision—from a teller to a banker to a manager.” The bank’s team mentality carries through to how they communiAUGUST 2022

cate with customers. Many employees handle calls together, allowing customers to meet multiple team members within the bank. Dittenber said this shows the dependability West Gate Bank provides, which he hopes instills in peoples’ minds that they are more than “just a customer;” rather, they are a part of the bank. The employee and customer camaraderie that carries through West Gate Bank ties back to the Sjulin family’s values. Dittenber said it’s “very rare” to meet all owners of a business, but the Sjulin family takes time to introduce themselves to every employee. Thornton said that Carl Sjulin often sparks conversations with employees about his family but also recognizes staff for any efforts and achievements. When Sjulin was out of town, he asked Thornton to take his place at the Capitol and present an education bill to senators and legislature. After Thornton’s presentation, Sjulin publicly commended her efforts. Additionally, he travels to branches to recognize employees celebrating company milestones and offers a gift to thank them for being with West 22 |

Gate Bank. Any bank can lend a dollar, withdraw, or deposit money, but it takes a bank that cultivates connections to set a high standard. No matter the location, the togetherness that unites the West Gate Bank team radiates through the relation-

ships formed with customers. A bank that refuses to let distance become a disadvantage is one that carries perseverance and a commitment to help its community. As Dittenber said, “We’re not team Omaha or team Lincoln—we’re team West Gate Bank.”

Better patient education

EDGE

I believe one of the most important and yet most challenging aspects of what we do is explaining our findings and recommendations to our patients. Something I learned in medical school is that the key to becoming a great doctor is being a great teacher, and this requires teaching to the level of each patient’s understanding. Not every patient comes in with the same baseline understanding of what a cataract is or how LASIK is performed, and my challenge to myself, my partner doctors, and my staff is simple: to afford every patient the opportunity to reach the level of understanding they need before proceeding with the plan. One size (or in this case, one explanation) does not fit all. To be great in the world of healthcare today, there are a few basic necessities. You need to perform the most advanced services and perform them at the highest quality, not necessarily the lowest cost. You need to use the world’s most advanced technology and perform services that are backed by evidence-based medicine and seek answers to generate that evidence when it doesn’t exist. Finally, the services must be performed with a plan that is tailored to the patient and their goals. But my position is that it is simply not enough to perform the

cents S

We’ve all been there—whether it’s at the dentist, the dealership, or somewhere completely different, there’s a good chance you’ve paid for a service you didn’t fully understand. It happens all too commonly, particularly in today’s warp-speed world, and I believe it’s something we should all be focused on changing. This is true even for doctors. If you want my two cents: patients deserve a better explanation of the services we (as doctors) are providing. In my line of work, things can quickly become complex. I am an ophthalmologist specializing in vision correction and vision restoration, and I’d bet I need to explain a little bit more about what that means. I am a surgeon who works closely with two top-notch doctors of optometry in a busy surgical referral center, where, as a team, we evaluate and manage some of the most complex eye problems. The most common surgery we do is cataract surgery, which is a removal and replacement of the eye’s cloudy natural lens, followed by laser vision correction. Both procedures are highly technical and data heavy in nature. For example, for every patient who comes in for a surgical evaluation, we obtain no fewer than 15 scans and tests before we even examine the eye.

A new era in healthcare Story by DR. ZACH KUCERA Over the past two years there have been more than 860 million trips to healthcare providers in the U.S. Luckily, the days of listening to the person in the white coat without having a say regarding your health care are a thing of the past. With information available at the click of a button, patients are now able to make more informed healthcare decisions. Selecting a provider and researching alternative treatment methods can be done online. But with every pro comes a con. “Dr. Google” can also lead patients down a rabbit hole with misinformation and scary self-diagnosed conditions. So where does a medical provider fall in this new era of healthcare? Here are three things to consider when searching for a provider: 1. Do you have a referral? Having someone recommend a provider after a 26 |

EDGE

positive personal experience is one of the most common ways new providers are found. You’ll have an idea of what to expect and some peace of mind knowing they took care of someone you know and trust. 2. Find a provider who empowers with knowledge rather than dictates from a pedestal. As a medical provider our job isn’t to push our own views or opinions but rather present the facts and allow the patient to make an informed decision for what works best for them and their lifestyle. You want and deserve a healthcare advocate. Someone whose goal is to provide care that leads to seeing you less over time, not more. Someone who’s willing to go to bat for the health of the patient and leave the patient feeling in control of his/her healthcare.

3. Results. One of the amazing benefits of online information is the ability to see reviews from actual patients. What kind of experience have others had in this office? Has anyone mentioned the condition that you’d be going in for? These questions and more can be addressed just by doing a little online homework. At Kucera Chiropractic, we’re honored that most of our patients are referred in by other providers, coworkers, family members, or friends of current patients. We love empowering patients with knowledge about how their body works, which gives patients the ability to make more educated healthcare decisions. We’d love to help you, too. If you’re ready to see what benefits chiropractic could have for you, give us a call at 531-721-2050.

OUR passion

Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Nebraska embodies inclusion

m

any top employers in the U.S. have made great strides toward prioritizing diversity and inclusion for employees. But ensuring every single individual within an organization feels truly valued and heard goes far beyond compliance with programs such as affirmative action. It requires a constant commitment from everyone in the company and the opportunity for any employee to engage in meaningful activities and lead by example. It’s the type of commitment exemplified in the culture at Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Nebraska (BCBSNE).

OUR passion Diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) efforts began at BCBSNE long before the term became a credential for businesses. BCBSNE’s mission as a health care company has always been to take care of and support people, whether members or employees. The demographics of the company’s 1,100 employees include 70% women and 21% people of color, with 50% women and 25% people of color comprising its executive leadership team. BCBSNE has a long history of encouraging employees to host events and participate in community activities that are important to them as individuals through its six employee resource groups (ERGs). These employee-led groups serve as places where employees can feel safe and know they belong, including groups to support African American, Latino, LGBTQ+, disabilities, military, and young professionals. At BCBSNE, 40% of its employees belong to an ERG. Recognizing the importance of DEI and wanting to fortify it within BCBSNE’s culture, the company hired a full-time director of diversity and inclusion. Jay Warren-Teamer joined the organization in August 2020 and was able to hit the ground running. Because the company already had DEI initiatives in motion, Warren-Teamer said she didn’t have to start from scratch. Rather, her role was to orchestrate, align, and communicate all efforts and ideas throughout the organization. And it started with listening. “I wanted to understand the foundation that had been laid, conversations that had started and stopped, and what needed more attention,” she said. Five key areas emerged that needed

Jay Warren-Teamer

elevation and strategy: talent attraction and retention, growing and sustaining the ERGs, ensuring DEI is an authentic part of the company brand, inclusive leadership, and equity mindedness. Warren-Teamer explained that equality is making things the same for everyone, such as equal pay for equal work. Whereas being equitable means recognizing that everyone has different needs and sometimes barriers, and making

sure they have the resources they need to be successful. One of the most important aspects to successfully having a DEI culture is organization readiness, which Warren-Teamer said was apparent at BCBSNE. “What surprised me was how quickly we were able to get things done. I introduced initiatives with no pushback. We could hit the gas and go.” From employees to the Board of Direc-

tors, Warren-Teamer said BCBSNE is committed to serving their members and employees with dignity and respect. Each ERG is run by an employee-elected board, holds monthly membership meetings, and submits budgets for event participation. The organization supports at least 30 events per year, such as the local Cinco de Mayo parade, Pride parade, and the Juneteenth Freedom Festival. This year, BCBSNE held its first Belonging at Blue summit with the goal of fostering enterprise-wide DEI conversations. Each ERG hosted a workshop or event during the weeklong summit, which was enabled for remote workers to participate as well. More than 150 employees joined the event, which also served as a way to recruit new ERG members. Another example of the company’s commitment to DEI is that BCBSNE President and CEO Steve Grandfield participates in the Greater Omaha Chamber’s Commitment to Opportunity, Diversity and Equity, or CODE. “What we’re doing isn’t just internal to us,” Warren-Teamer said. “Our employees live in the community, so they are an extension of our commitment to DEI and helping all boats rise.” One thing Warren-Teamer emphasized is there’s no end point to DEI—it’s a journey that often comes with some mistakes and a lot of understanding and grace. But that’s what makes the company’s approach authentic and part of the culture at BCBSNE. “We’re committed to belonging, whether it’s as a member, an employee, a prospective employee, or the community at large. It means understanding the complex identities and needs that all folks hold. We are steadfast in the way we lead and communicate, and I hope everyone feels that as a Nebraska-based health insurer, they belong.” 32 |

EXPLORE THE “C” 34 |

EDGE

Story by EDGE CONTRIBUTOR | Photos courtesy of LAKE CUNNINGHAM Lake Cunningham, or the “C”, is a 390-acre lake surrounded by a 1,050acre park tucked away in north-central Omaha. Many Omahans are unaware of this hidden gem conveniently located in the heart of the city. The “C” encourages people to take a moment to disconnect from the hustle and bustle of city life and encounter a beautiful nature experience. Under new management, the Lake Cunningham Development Trust (LCDT) now operates the park and campground in partnership with the City of Omaha. The LCDT focuses on safety, cleanliness, activation, youth programming, and providing user groups of all backgrounds and ages with a memorable outdoor experience. This season the “C” is focused on activation by offering a new family-friendly concert series, yoga in the park, food trucks, bringing back new and previous community events, and partnering with other organizations to offer new experiences. “This project has been one that is so special for our community,” said Brook Bench, Executive Director for the LCDT. “To have the philanthropic backing from over 30 major donors, we have been able to create a mission and vision for this park even beyond my years here. Lake Cunningham is becoming a utilized

asset and by activating it, keeping it clean, safe, and family-friendly, we have begun to see this park come back to life and reach its potential.” Lake Cunningham not only offers elevated camping, but it is partnering with Prairie Fireflies to offer a glamping luxury experience for those who want to camp in style and comfort. Lake C is also featuring a new park concert series that runs through September called “Rock the C” for campers and the general public to enjoy a night of free live music, food trucks, kids’ activities, and more. Numerous trail run events occur throughout the year as well. Other activities include horseback riding, yoga classes, paddleboarding, archery range,

18-hole disc golf course, fishing, and no-wake boating. An important piece of the LCDT organization is providing underserved youth and working with community organizations to provide a camp-like program during the summer and over the year. Kids have the opportunity to come out to Lake C and partake in outdoor adventures like kayaking, fishing, hiking, fire building, archery, and biking. Whether you’re looking for a new outdoor experience, community event, or you want to disconnect and enjoy the beautiful lake and park views, you can stay up to date with all of the “C’s” park events on its website at www.explorethec.com. Story by EDGE CONTRIBUTOR Photos courtesy of SHADOW RIDGE MUSIC FESTIVAL On Friday, September 9, the Shadow Ridge Music Festival will welcome home Omaha’s own, 311, as they take the stage to headline this year’s festival. Formed in 1988 by Omaha natives Nick Hexum, Aaron Willis, and Chad Sexton, 311 has sold over 11 million albums worldwide and is the biggest band to come out of Omaha in the past 30 years. “To have 311 headline our festival is something I am very proud of,” said festival founder Justin Shanahan. “Those of us who grew up in Omaha in the 90s have a special affinity for 311. They are Omaha’s hometown band and they put Omaha on the map in terms of music. I couldn’t be more excited to have them here.” In addition to 311, this year’s lineup includes platinum selling artists Eve 6 and Lit, whose chart-topping hits were alternative rock anthems of the early 2000s, and Tropidelic, a band well known for its high energy blend of reggae, rock, and hip-hop. In addition to great music, local restaurants, food trucks, and bars will be on hand for festival goers to enjoy. “If you are an alt-rock fan, it doesn’t get better than this lineup,” Shanahan said. “And if you like good food, we will have some of the best restaurants and food trucks in Omaha.” Also new this year, the Shadow Ridge Music Festival has partnered with the Lane Thomas Foundation, a local nonprofit whose mission is dedicated to supporting families of children in need of life-saving transplants. A portion of every ticket sold and sponsorship dollars raised for this year’s festival will go to the Lane Thomas Foundation, who will be on site to raise awareness for its cause. “As our festival grows, I feel it’s important that we give back to our community and support worthwhile causes,” said Shanahan. “The Lane Thomas Foundation, founded by our friends Matt and Melissa Graves, is an organization that is near and dear to us. I encourage everyone to visit www.LaneThomas.org and learn about the incredible work Matt and Melissa are doing to support these families who are facing incredible adversity.” With over 5,000 in attendance in 2021, the Shadow Ridge Music Festival was one of the biggest paid outdoor concerts in Omaha that year, putting it on the map as West Omaha’s premier concert event of the summer. This year’s show is setting up to be even bigger. “The success we had last year was amazing,” Shanahan said. “But the demand for tickets this year is off the charts. We have already sold out of reserved seating and VIP ticket packages, and general admission tickets are 75% sold out. I attribute this, in large part, to 311’s homecoming. It has been over five years since they’ve played in Omaha.” The festival also serves as a source of pride for West Omaha, proving that it’s a viable location for events traditionally found in midtown and downtown. Shanahan added, “We are helping to expand the footprint of live music in our city, which is a great thing.”

GROT TO SAL AD WITH CHIPOTLE LIME VINAIGRET TE

The new concept from owner Brett Clure debuted in the former party room inside Tanner’s off 173rd and West Center Road in late February 2022 with a focus on Italian comfort foods, classic cocktails, and stellar service. Lucas Ehly, formerly of Tavern 180, manages the bar (and the playlists contributing to the light and breezy feel). Frequently mentioned by name by satisfied customers, Ehly is a well-travelled renaissance man who’s had a foot in the hospitality industry since high school. A wealth of worldly experience, including stints in the tech industry, modeling, and teaching English to children in China make him ideally suited to the profession, and he can’t imagine spending his days any other way. Ehly’s love for restaurants goes beyond bartending and service. While teaching in China, he expanded his palate (imbibing a Coke daily, figuring it would squelch any reaction to unfamiliar foods), by sampling the wares of the noodle vendors serving daily bowls of happiness from their carts outside his accommodations. Karen Roads, general manager of the adjoining Tanners, has contributed to the success of the establishment as well. Her 25 years of experience bring a quiet calm to the team, and she, like Ehly, can’t imagine a life outside the industry. She jokingly shared, “I tried to get away and it didn’t work. Once it’s in your blood, it’s tough to get out.” According to Roads, the executive 46 |

EDGE

management team and owners encourage staff to empower themselves. “We are given the tools to do the job, and they have our back.” Ehly added, “Expectations are high, and we are in control of our own destiny.” The dishes served at Capri are “familiar but better,” according to loyal customers. The complimentary bread has garnered a lot of press, earning comparisons to the beloved Grisanti’s Tuscan-style garlic bread. Dave Shillinglaw, marketing manager, proclaimed the oregano forward, garlic butter bread is “magnificent.” Kitchen manager Jorge Perea has been cooking for about 5 years and is proud to present dishes such as crispy arancini— risotto balls stuffed with Italian cheeses, coated in panko, and fried to crispy perfection. Another popular antipasto offering is bruschetta—bread rubbed with garlic, topped with olive oil, and grilled or toasted (the moniker derived from bruscare, an Italian verb meaning to char or toast). At Capri, the bruschetta is topped with a refreshing, marinated tomato relish. All entrees are accompanied by one of three salad options (served before the entrée in the American style). The Capri house salad features a crisp endive mix topped with fresh cucumbers, cherry tomatoes, and pepperoncini peppers. The unique Grotto salad combines hearts of palm, roasted red peppers, and candied pecans tossed in a chipotle lime dressing, and the third option is a classic Caesar salad.

Staff favorite entrée Chicken Piccata is a thin, tender chicken breast topped with capers, marinated diced tomatoes, diced onions, and a lemon beurre blanc over angel hair pasta. The hearty Chicken Parmesan is served over bucatini tossed in a light Marzano tomato sauce studded with fresh basil, and the Carbonara is a creamy dish made possible by a liaison of eggs, pasta water, and parmesan. Ehly is pleased to recommend the perfect wine to pair with the homey fare served at Capri. The wine list includes familiar and accessible offerings such as Meomi Pinot Noir but also introduces diners to native Italian grapes such as Nebbiolo and Sangiovese. A well-designed cocktail list features traditional Italian liqueurs such as limoncello in the familiar form of a martini, and future iterations will feature seasonal concoctions. In addition to the Limoncello Martini, Ehly recommends the Raspberry Pama Sparkle and the French Kiss to guests who prefer to let him make the selection. The dining space is small, with room for 40 guests indoors and 40 guests on the well-shaded patio. Two large booths, one indoor and one on the far end the patio, provide ample space for large parties or families, and the smaller booths for two serve as an intimate spot for date night. “Our guests are our backbone,” said Roads. “We enjoy many repeat guests and feel very blessed to be part of their lives.”

Story by EDGE STAFF Photos courtesy WONDERS OF WILDLIFE Less than a day’s drive from Omaha, southwest Missouri has much to offer nature enthusiasts. One of its premier attractions, located in Springfield, is the award-winning Wonders of Wildlife—a 350,000 sq. ft. wildlife national museum and aquarium that is larger than the Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History. Established in 2017 by Bass Pro Shops founder and noted conservationist, Johnny Morris, Wonders of Wildlife serves as an interactive world to educate visitors on the importance of the outdoors and conservation efforts. “At Wonders of Wildlife, our talented team is driven by a collective passion for conservation and educating the next generation of outdoor enthusiasts,” Morris said. The attraction features more than 35,000 live fish, mammals, reptiles, amphibians, and birds as well as multisensory habitats and engaging interactive exhibits. Two of its newest features are the American Museum of Fly Fishing, which moved from Manchester, VT, and the Nature’s Best Photography Gallery, which relocated from the Smithsonian Museum of Natural History in Washington, D.C. The American Museum of Fly Fishing gallery exhibit includes a chronological history of the sport of fly fishing, profiles of celebrity fly fishers, some of the sport’s most significant rods, reels, and flies, as well as vintage photography, artwork, and historical texts that chronicle fly fishing’s earliest days. The Nature’s Best Photography Exhibit documents the achievements of nature photographers worldwide. The exhibit receives 30,000 submissions annually and features a rotating gallery of wildlife photography and videos from around the world as a celebration of both people and nature. This year, Wonders of Wildlife National Museum & Aquarium was voted “America’s Best Aquarium” through a national public poll conducted by USA Today, which is the fourth time it has received the honor. The poll ranks the top 20 prominent institutions across North America. In 2017, the attraction was named “America’s Best New Attraction” by USA Today’s Readers’ Choice Awards. “We are honored by this recognition and grateful to our guests, members, and fans for their votes and support,” Morris said. “We hope the awareness generated by this award encourages even more people to visit and they are driven to enjoy and protect the great outdoors.” For more information, visit wondersofwildlife.org. CAN PERSONAL PROPERTY BE TRANSFERRED AFTER DEATH WITHOUT PROBATE?

By TOSHA HEAVICAN, SENIOR ASSOCIATE ATTORNEY, HIGHTOWER REFF LAW The probate process can take a very long time. Imagine having an option to speed up that process or potentially avoid it completely. Under Nebraska law, there are two statutes that allow an individual to collect a deceased person’s property without requiring the probate. These statutes allow for a person to sign a small estate affidavit to transfer property. The key questions to ask are: 1. What type of asset is it – personal property or real property? 2. How is the asset titled? 3. How much is the asset worth? Type of Asset. Real property is real estate; personal property is everything else. Title of the Asset. In order for a small estate affidavit to be used, the asset must be in the deceased person’s name only. Value. Under Nebraska law, personal property worth less than $50,000, in total, and real property worth less than $50,000 can be transferred without the necessity of filing in court. Effective July 21, 2022, the allowable amount increases to $100,000 for personal property. For the transfer of personal property, 30 days after the deceased person passes away, the individuals entitled to receive 50 |

EDGE

the property can sign an affidavit to receive the assets. The value can be reduced by any liens or encumbrances on the personal property to comply with the value requirement. For the transfer of real property, 30 days after the deceased person passes away, an affidavit, signed by all the individuals entitled to a share of the real property, can be filed with the Register of Deeds to transfer title to the successor owners. The value of the property is based on the value of the deceased person’s interest, which is determined from the value of the property shown on the tax assessment rolls for the year in which the deceased person died, less real estate taxes and interest due at the time of death. If the deceased person died with a Will, the Will must be attached to the affidavit. It is important to make sure there is no inheritance tax owed on the assets that are being transferred. In addition, it is important to make sure all individuals who are entitled to a share of the deceased person’s assets are included. Failure to do so could complicate things later on regarding the rightful title owner. The affidavits are signed under penalty of perjury and cannot be used if a probate proceeding was previously opened. Small estate affidavits can be an efficient way to transfer assets without

the court system when they apply. For example, small estate affidavits are a great way to transfer an asset to a trust after the owner has died, and previously forgot to transfer the asset to the trust before they died. Consult with an experienced probate attorney to determine if a small estate affidavit is appropriate for your situation.

Colby Johnson is new Mayor for Village of Boys Town

p

roviding leadership opportunities for youth has long been recognized as an effective way to help develop character, build solid communications skills, and encourage personal growth. That’s been the Boys Town approach for more than 100 years. In fact, the Village of Boys Town has its own government system that was originated by Father Edward J. Flanagan in 1926. This successful system establishes a sense of community by offering the citizens of the student body with opportunities to lead.

PASSION spotlight

In May, seventeen-year-old Colby Johnson of Baltimore, MD, was elected the 122nd Mayor of the Village of Boys Town. Johnson’s journey to leadership has been rewarding in more ways than one, but his favorite aspect of his new role is feeling as though his actions are important and impactful. Johnson first arrived at Boys Town on May 21, 2020. He wasted no time before becoming involved in various activities, including football, track, and wrestling. As the captain of the varsity Boys Town football team, Johnson takes his position seriously and credits the sports program for teaching him about leadership and teamwork. At first, Johnson was not considering a run for Mayor. It was only after those around Johnson repeatedly told him that he’d be a good leader by setting a great example for others and being a strong 54 |

advocate for positive change, that he was persuaded. “So, I shot my shot,” Johnson said. With a campaign theme centered on “happiness for everyone throughout the campus,” Johnson got to work. When he found out he had won the election, he was shocked. “I remember hearing the crowd cheering, and I couldn’t believe it,” he said. “It has all been a great experience.” As for his duties as Mayor, Johnson said his most important focus is being an advocate for others. He recently implemented his plan of placing a suggestion box at each building on campus so that people can submit their thoughts and ideas to him. Since arriving at Boys Town, Johnson said he’s learned many lessons that have helped him enter in his new role as Mayor. “I’ve learned that you won’t always get a ‘yes’ answer to everything,” he said.

“The things I like to advocate for may be a ‘no’ sometimes, and I have to be able to handle that in a professional way, not get frustrated, and move on to something else.” Upon graduating in May 2023, Johnson plans to move closer to home and hopes to attend Delaware State University, where he will study Sport Management with a goal of working in the industry as a coach or trainer. This summer, Johnson spent much of his time participating in football camp, lifting weights, and honing his skills. He also used his time to reflect on ways to be the very best leader he can be. “A lot of my coaches say that I do the right thing all the time but need to be more vocal,” Johnson said. “So, that’s what I’m going to do as Mayor. I’m going to be a more vocal leader and make sure that everyone’s voice is heard.”

OUR youth

t

here’s something special about the perfect pillow. Not only can it provide a good night’s sleep, but it’s often associated with comfort, security, and an overall sense of well-being. Ten-year-old Eliza White, with the aid of her younger sisters Evelynn and Everley, has taken the pillow-as-comfort concept to a new level with her business Sow at Home. For each hand-sewn pillow she sells, White donates a pillow to a child in foster care with a message of love.

OUR youth

Edge: How did you come up with the idea to make and sell pillows? White: My [great] grandma taught me how to sew when I was six, and we’d make pillows. We’d go to the store and buy fabric, and she’d put the pins in to hold the fabric together. This is the first year that I measure and cut the fabric myself, so now I do it all on my own. Edge: How did you decide to donate pillows to kids in foster care? White: My nana had a business and always gave back a portion of sales to charity, so I wanted to do something where I gave back. I decided to help foster kids because even though they don’t have parents, they should still know they are loved and supported, so I donate to the Nebraska Children’s Home Society. “Sow at Home” is because we sow seeds of hope and love into the lives of children in foster care. Edge: And you sew a message on the outside of each pillow? White: Each one has a saying, like “you are loved,” “you are important,” “you are brave.” If a pillow doesn’t have a message, it doesn’t get sold or donated. Edge: How many pillows do you make, 58 |

sell, and donate? White: This year we’ve made more than 50 pillows, and I sold 10 at the spring business fair. I usually sew once a week at my grandma’s house, and my sisters help now by stuffing the pillows and picking out fabric. We each choose fabric that we think girls our ages would like. For girls my age, I like checkerboard, swans, Harry Potter, and Star Wars. Edge: Where do you sell the pillows? White: I have a booth at the Children’s Business Fair in the spring and fall, and now I have an Instagram page, @sow_ at_home where I take orders there. Edge: Do you have plans to grow your business? White: I’m going to start posting my pillows on my Instagram, and my sisters are going to start their own businesses. Evie is going to make jewelry and Everley is going to make bubble tea. We’ll all have booths at the next business fair. Edge: What do you like to do when you’re not sewing? White: My hobby is volleyball, and I just started piano. I like to play outside

with my sisters and my friends, and help my sisters with their businesses. Edge: Do you have a favorite pillow you’ve made? White: I have a checkered pillow, a baby Yoda pillow, and a flamingo one. I love flamingos! Edge: What do you enjoy most about your business? White: I love that kids in foster care get to have a huggable, soft pillow and be encouraged by the tags. Little girls and boys love the pillows. At the business fair, a little boy grabbed one and wouldn’t let go until his mom bought it for him! Edge: What’s the most challenging part of your business? White: Overcoming my shyness when I have to talk to people at the business fairs. Kailah White: I’ve really seen her come out of her shell, be confident in her voice, and know she’s making a difference. Each tag she makes spreads the love of God, which is the driving force behind what we do.

MAKING AN

IMPACT Addison Brabb | Senior Boys Town High School Story by SHELLY NOSBISCH Photo by MIKE BUCKLEY Boys Town High School sports have had a huge impact on senior Addie Brabb’s life. She participates in track and field, softball, cross country, and basketball, but it wasn’t a smooth path at first. “Before I came to Boys Town, I had never played a team sport,” she said. “When I first got here, I tried out for track and was cut before try outs. This really wasn’t that big of a surprise; I was not athletically prepared.” Later, she was able to join the softball team and became the starting pitcher her first two years. “After softball I found a love for running and joined the cross country team. And after cross country, I tried out for basketball and earned a spot among the five starters. Soon after basketball I tried out for track and field once again and earned a spot on the team. We won our conference, went through many personal records, and I won the Most Dedicated for Track and Field award at our annual sports banquet.” Being a part of the teams at Boys Town helped Brabb develop self-realization, discipline, and teamwork. “It has brought about lots of opportunities to tolerate differences and adapt to new worlds,” she said. “Boys Town High School is not the normal high school; it is full of diversity. All the kids that come through campus are very likely to be from different backgrounds, ethnicities, and character. And when you learn to play on a team with a bunch of girls you don’t know or understand very well, you start to truly understand what the word ‘team’ means.” Brabb has bumped up against many obstacles through the years playing sports. “Multiple times I wasn’t able to win every 10x10, make every shot, win every race, or strike every pitch. And sometimes I would be hard on myself and start to feel like giving up. But the amazing Boys Town coaches that I have helped me push through all those disappointments. They helped me realize that I can’t let my mistakes define me.” Brabb added that she’s proud of the massive growth in her character through playing sports. “I’m finding abilities I had all along.” People around her tell her that she’s hard-working and she believes she gets her motivation from within. “If I want something to happen, I have to make it happen.”

A HOOPING

HERO Malachi Washington | Senior Boys Town High School

Boys Town High School senior Malachi Washington is laser-focused on earning a scholarship to play college basketball after graduation. Although Washington made some mistakes his freshman year, he’s determined to use the opportunity to make things better for himself and his family. “I want to provide for my family so that it is not such a struggle for them,” he said. “The drive to help my family keeps me going. If I can get a scholarship to support me financially in college while playing basketball and earning a degree, I can turn that into something that allows me to continue to help out my mom and little brothers long-term.” Washington plans to major in marketing and/or business. “I want to become a real estate agent. After doing that, my goal is to own properties across the country.” Washington’s uncle recruited him to play on an Amateur Athletic Union basketball team in seventh grade. “I was at a picnic for the fourth of July that year and I had just hit a growth spurt,” Washington recalled. “I have been hooping ever since.” Playing for his basketball teams are fun but come with hard work and dedication. “I like that I get to compete and win. The best part is seeing how my dedication and hard work pays off.” Boys Town has named Washington the most outstanding basketball player for two years in a row. “I have really tried to take advantage of the opportunities that have been presented to me here, and it is reassuring that people see my efforts. It is a major honor to be recognized in my sport and at my school.” Outside of basketball, Washington was also involved in a Youth Justice Program through Boys Town. “It allowed me to have a voice and reflect on my experiences in hopes that it creates more opportunities for future kids.” His family home at Boys Town has been a big source of support. “I love living in the Jacksons’ home. They have been there for me the whole time by supporting me in basketball and being there when I need them.” Washington’s newest skill is the result of his culinary class. “I am a chef, too!” 62 |
