The staff at Edge Publishing, including Edge Magazine and Dine Magazine, understand that with recent news regarding the Coronavirus, the safety of the public is a primary concern. We value our advertising partnerships because without them, we couldn’t bring these stories to you through a print publication. If you have a way to support your local businesses through gift cards or carry out and delivery, please consider supporting them during this time. It is no doubt, our economy will be impacted by this virus, but Omaha is a strong community that will bounce back stronger than ever. I’m proud to live in a city that goes to great lengths to support one another. If the nicer weather has you thinking about building a new home, our cover story introduces you to Lindsay Warren with Citadel Signature Homes, who is ready to give you the one-on-one attention to help you build the home of your dreams. As one of Omaha’s few female home builders, she has established a reputation for high quality and attention to detail that will give you an exceptional experience. Warmer temps have families venturing outdoors, but there are a lack of playgrounds in West Omaha that are designed
to be inclusive for people of all needs. Imagine Inclusion is a local non-profit trying to change that. They have designed an inclusive community playground to be installed at Lake Zorinsky. ndoubtedly, a home is a place to relax and escape from the everyday stresses of the outside world. While a home is typically viewed as a retreat, it can also be designated as a spot to gather and entertain guests. Luckily, this particular home, located in Newport Landing on Bennington Lake, beautifully serves both purposes and more.

positioned for views of the cove, but it also offers a more private location. “This home truly has the best of both worlds,” said Michael Maley, realtor for Berkshire Hathaway. “It’s an entertainer’s dream palace, but it can also be a great family home, and a fun place to raise children.” The property’s curb appeal renders a great first impression with its meticulous landscaping and contemporary exterior. On the inside, the current homeowner recently renovated and installed all new upgrades throughout the home, which was originally built in 2009. While the home is expansive, it also breathes comfortability with its soaring 22-foot ceilings and open concept. As soon as entering the home, visitors land their gaze on a breathtaking view of the water, which stretches throughout the main floor. Various unique textures and finishes radiate style and charm. The main living area, which is equipped with a full bar, is a sweeping space that features two sitting areas, a powder bathroom, a dining area, and a kitchen outfitted with high-end appliances, two sinks, and an abundance of storage.

Outdoor furniture Even hearty Nebraskans’ patience grows thin as the winter months drag on. But here we are, on the cusp of Spring 2020, and with the tease of 50-degree days at the end of February, the sight of neighbors and friends outside tells us that It. Is. Almost. TIME! That means enjoying life al fresco is only a few short weeks away. Prepare your own outdoor oasis with the help of interior design professionals who have access to furnishings and fabrics that are made to withstand our climate, all while giving you the prettiest patio on the block.
1
Outdoor fabrics are far from boring. Today’s patterns include the trusted usuals and some new surprises. Think trellis patterns, palm and tropical prints, animal prints, stripes and florals, with Oriental dragon patterns and interesting Ikats.
2
For the most powerful design impact, match your outdoor furniture look to your landscaping look. A cohesive design concept that carries through your entire property will create a real statement. And don’t feel limited to the expected outdoor approved sling furniture. Options for fully upholstered sofas, sectionals, and chairs that are appropriate for outdoors are both unique and ultra-comfortable options for outdoor living.

elements that much more. Heaters can be placed to prolong the room’s usable season, and motorized outdoor shades can be installed to protect you from sun and insects alike!

Our Midwestern climate is hard on outdoor furniture. Consider new materials like aluminum with a wood finish baked on for added durability, stainless steel, powder coated aluminum, synthetic wicker, and foamless cushioning. These specialty products can be mixed and matched with an array of fabrics to create a look that’s comfortable and climate friendly.

While outdoor rugs, artwork, lamps, and accessories have been on the market for a while, don’t forget the power of trims and tapes. Interior designers can access a rainbow of embellishments that give your outdoor furniture the same custom look and uniqueness that your indoor pieces have.

Imagine Inclusion aims to build West Omaha’s first inclusive playground
w
ith spring fever in the air, families—especially kids— are anxious to get outdoors. And there’s no better way to spend a beautiful afternoon than at a park where children can freely have fun on a playground. But there’s an unfortunate reality for many families in West Omaha, and that’s the lack of an accessible, barrier-free playground for kids who have mobility, sensory, vision, and hearing impairments. There are two community visionaries who are on a mission to try and change that.

Lauren Citro and Meaghan Walls met a number of years ago at the Children’s Respite Care Center. Walls worked in the rehab department where Citro would bring her son, Brody, who has spina bifida. Brody and Walls’ daughter, Avery, often played together at the center. The children became friends, and then their mothers struck up a friendship as well. Citro wanted to find a place close to their homes in West Omaha where the kids could play together outdoors, but because Broday uses a wheelchair and walker, the search proved difficult. The closest playgrounds he could access were located more than a 30-minute drive away. She called Omaha Parks and Rec and found out the playground at Zorinsky Lake needed to be refurbished. Citro asked the simple question: if they raised the money, could they design a new playground? The answer was yes, and Imagine Inclusion was born. Walls and Citro are uniquely positioned to take on this endeavor. Walls has a professional background in designing products and environments to be more accessible and inclusive. Citro knows the struggles of finding places to take her children to play outdoors— especially with one child who has mobility issues and another who doesn’t. They know what features are necessary to meet the needs of the entire community. But they couldn’t do it alone. So the women partnered with Crouch Recreation, which has already built several accessible, inclusive playgrounds. Citro and Walls drove the playground’s design, and Crouch Recreation created all the renderings. Once the funds are raised, it will only take them 6-8 weeks to install the playground and surface. All that’s left is to raise the money–$850,000. Including the city’s contribution, $100,000 of this has already been raised. The biggest challenge is to continue to get the word out and find those community supporters. The organization did receive its 501(c)(3) status last fall, which will hopefully open some opportunities for grants, but finding the local corporate and individual sponsors is key. “Everyone is connected to someone in their life who experiences disability,” Walls said. Whether it’s a child, parent, or grandparent, she explained it’s frustrating when there isn’t a space
in West Omaha to host a birthday party or family reunion where everyone can easily attend. Rather, they want everyone to see their needs represented in the way they designed the playground. Zorinsky is not only a popular, central location in West Omaha, but the grounds already have restroom facilities and a picnic area. A truly inclusive playground means that it’s attractive to all ages. Citro and Walls acknowledged that although there are playgrounds that are considered accessible, there is a whole lot more to it than simply incorporating wheelchair ramps, explaining that these playgrounds meet minimum standards and still allow for woodchips or landing zones that have sand—problematic areas for wheelchairs. “We need to change the way we think about accessible playgrounds and expand people’s perspective on how our community actually functions,” Walls said. The unique design aspects Citro and Walls have included in the playground support participation of individuals impacted by a wide range of impairments, ensuring options for all park goers. The
surface alone will be solid poured rubber, which accounts for one-third of the total cost. There are also high contrast color zones to give visual cues that it’s a transition area on the playground. There are also two ramp access points that connect to make the flow of play easier. Special equipment is also included, such as a merry-go-round that is flush to the ground and has seating, a roller slide that uses rolling pin like cylinders to help with movement down the slide, and a rocking Alta Glider as a substitute to a wheelchair swing. Citro emphasized that disabilities can be isolating and they don’t discriminate. “It’s going to take a lot of community support because it’s a community space.” Imagine Inclusion has a vision to develop curriculum for a more robust approach to anti-bullying education, and there are other opportunities to expand what they’re doing with playgrounds. But for now, the two moms are focused on getting the word out in hopes of raising the money needed to see their passion project come to life. t’s time to pack away the bulky sweaters and heavy coats and start thinking spring! Sunny days are now a reality and we couldn’t be happier. Spring wardrobe shopping is so much fun, especially with the new, fresh colors and trends for spring 2020! Prints: This spring season features eye catching prints with an appealing array of colors. You will be seeing plenty of floral and animal print again for spring. However, the designs have been updated with beautiful pastel and sherbet colors, giving these classic prints a fresh new look. Midi Dresses: The hemline of the midi dress hits anywhere between the bottom of the knee to the top of the ankle. The updated midi dresses for this spring are sporting slits up the sides for a flowing, feminine look. The longer length of the midi dress gives way to so much versatility. It can be worn with a cute sandal, fun flat or heel. The midi is perfect for the office, church, a wedding or travel. Try pairing it with a cropped jacket and you’ll have a whimsical, casual and stylish outfit. Jumpsuits: Whether you love them or not, jumpsuits are still in for spring! Our favorite aspect of a jumpsuit is you only need one item to make an outfit. Jumpsuits take the work out of mixing and matching a whole outfit and are comfortable and lightweight for travel. Wear with sandals for a casual look during the day and then add a pair of heels to hit the town in the evening. Pastels: The runways are bright this spring season, featuring the soft, pastel trend. The most popular pastel colors this spring are: pistachio green, orange sherbet, baby blue, lilac, and buttercup yellow. These colors scream warm weather, and we are excited to have many new pastel pieces arriving in the store daily! Find a shade that works well for your skin, hair and eye color. Blazers: Spring blazers are a thing! We love blazers because they can be worn day to evening with style and ease. Add a blazer over a dress, pants, jeans or a skirt to the office and then out for happy hour in the evening. Blazers really give an outfit a finished look. You’ll see an array of styles and colors, so we suggest choosing a style that fits your body type. Whether it’s the boxy boyfriend fit or the tailored single button blazer, you’ll be sure to make a statement. Fabulous Fashions Boutique has the latest spring fashions and accessories arriving daily. We are always available to assist you in finding your fabulous look. Follow us on Facebook and Instagram to view our sales and events. We hope to see you soon.

eing a business owner always comes with unique challenges, but as a female business owner in a male-dominated industry, those challenges can be exponential. However, that didn’t stop Lindsay Warren, owner of Citadel Signature Homes, from pursuing her passion. In fact, she has earned the respect of her male colleagues, built a team of trusted agents, and established a reputation for building high-quality custom homes with an unmatched client experience.

COVER story
As a child growing up in Holdredge, NE, Warren knew at an early age she wanted to be a business owner. At age 12 she baked and sold cheesecakes for events and at age 15 she started a home organization and cleaning business. Her grandfather was a custom home builder in her hometown, and she lived through her parents rehabbing two farm houses, complete with having to wash dishes in the bathroom sink for a month. But it was her experience working in the hospitality industry—first in Kansas City and then at the Hilton in Omaha— that taught her how to provide excellent customer service. In 2009 she transitioned into the home building industry where she man32 |

aged employees, compliance, processes, and systems. “I saw a lot of discrepancy between clients who liked the end result but weren’t happy with the building process,” she said. So, she set the goal of starting her own home building business to provide clients with a different experience, adding, “you don’t have to hate your builder at the end of it.” With three small children at home, rather than rush into it, Warren took her time to ensure she had a clear business plan. In 2017, she finally felt the timing was right and “dove in.” During a dinner out with her parents, her father suggested the name “Citadel” because it’s a synonym for “safety” and “fortress”—words that Warren felt
accurately reflect a home’s purpose. The client experience that Citadel offers starts off with the real estate agents Warren partners with to represent her. “I want the agents to be industry experts,” she said. This includes having them attend walk-throughs with their client during the build process. “They learn something new every time, and it helps them sell better too.” Warren also said she sets very clear expectations for the client from day one: deadlines for making decisions, what happens if weather causes a delay, and she can help accommodate a client’s busy schedule—such as bringing design items to their office—to make the process easier. With a shortage of laborers, it’s critical to retain the best subcontractors. “Subs are a reflection of us, and ours are the best in the industry,” she said. Because custom home builders often share subcontractors, Warren said communication is just as important with them as it is with clients. Following the completion of a home, Warren continues to keep in contact with clients, because that’s a pain point for many new homeowners. “When I was previously in the construction industry, clients couldn’t reach their builder after they closed,” she said. “We aren’t going anywhere and won’t stop taking your calls. We want the relationship to last.” Citadel builds 10-15 custom homes per year in the $400,000 and up 36 |

Warren’s successes haven’t come easily, especially with the challenges she had to overcome. Before she launched Citadel, she was told by multiple people, even some she highly respected, not to go into the industry because she’s a woman. Despite the challenges of being questioned as to why she was on a job site or taken less seriously, she said she never questioned her decision to be in this business. “I had to prove myself, but I’ve done that now,” she said. In fact, she’s “found her people” as a member of the Professional Women in Building and the National Association of Homebuilders where she’s met other female builders. “It’s been very inspiring, and if they can do it, I can too.” Warren recently mentored two high school girls interested in the industry, one of whom is now working for an
electrician. She’d also like to create a non-profit that brings education and awareness to women for the trades and funds opportunities for them. “I’d love to see more women in the construction industry in general,” she said. “Women are usually detailed, organized, and have good people skills, and that’s what you need to be successful in this industry.” Warren has taken her client experience and processes and extended them to a basement finishing company, Hawthorne Finished Basements, which she launched last year. Her goal is to continue building more homes and scale the basement company over the next several years. Her best advice for anyone in the market to build a home is to do your due diligence—get referrals and walk through other builders’ sites. “I back my product, we pick the best subs, and we’re not going anywhere in the end. I’m confident in our reputation.” For more information, visit CitadelOmaha.com.

Getting a boost in school By DR. STEPHEN STINN
There is one key factor most people overlook when trying to figure out why their kids may be struggling in school. Whether they’re having trouble with focus, concentration, sitting still, staying on task, reading comprehension, behavioral issues, etc. This one key factor is the eyes. I don’t necessarily mean a traditional vision test, although that would be helpful. Most pediatricians already check this regularly. What I’m talking about is a functional vision test. A majority of your child’s school success will depend on your eyes’ ability to: Move independently of your head: Your eyes should be able to stay locked onto a target regardless if your head is moving or not. Without a well-functioning vestibular system, a child’s eyes will go wherever their head goes. Hold gaze: Some kids simply cannot hold their eyes in one spot and lock onto a target. Their eyes are constantly shifting from one thing to the next. You can understand how this would affect concentration, focus, and more. Pursue: Many kids cannot make their eyes 38 |

smoothly glide from one target to the next. Instead, it looks rather jagged. Imagine trying to track a line while reading and your eyes are jumping all over. If you are curious about having your child take a functional vision test, I am offering it to Edge Magazine readers free of charge. It only takes about 10 minutes. Your child will sit in front of a screen that has the ability to track where their eyes move with special sensors. For example, it may ask your child to follow a dot from side to side on the screen. It will ask them to jump their eyes from one target to the next. It will have them read a paragraph. When they are finished, it will replay back exactly what their eyes did. Many parents will be shocked to see their children may not even be looking at half the words. Why? Because their functional vision is not where it needs to be. They may see 20/20, but that is much different than getting their eyes to move in a coordinated fashion, which is needed to succeed in school (think reading and reading comprehension). If you would like a free functional vision report for your child, call our office at 402.504.4676 or message me on Facebook at my page “Dr. Stephen Stinn.” I look forward to working with you in the future!

HOW MUCH WILL HIRING AN EVENT PLANNER COST? In a full-service scenario, a combination of coordination and design starts with a flat fee of $500 to $7,000 depending on the scope of the event. Additional costs incur based on need: venue rental, catering, florals, entertainment, graphic design, etc. The initial meeting will establish the budget and leeway points. An experienced planner will point out whether the budget is realistic and recommend areas to adjust design to maximize funds. Under the scope of full service, AZ + Co. wears all of these hats. Generally speaking, an event planner makes critical decisions regarding who, what, when and how. An event coordinator, however, focuses on logistics, assuring each vendor arrives promptly and performs appropriately. If the coordinator is the brains, the designer is the heart. V. Mertz provides exceptional cuisine amid customized experiences
ucked into the quaint Old Market Passageway, V. Mertz has been captivating diners with oldworld charm, exceptional wines, and innovative flavors for more than 40 years. First opened as a wine bar, the dark wood and dim lighting of the romantic space is reminiscent of a wine cellar, but originally housed fruit during a time when the area served as an actual market. It is easy to lose track of time and place here, making it well-suited for an intimate meal.

Ownership of the establishment has changed hands over the years, but, in General Manager Matt Brown’s view, “always in the right way to the right people, never straying from the general skeleton of intention.” Operating from a guest-first mentality, the establishment boasts incredible staff who seem to effortlessly balance history with eyes on the future. In the tiny kitchen, Executive Chef Jacob Newton and his team coax complex, layered flavor out of quality local products. Formally trained in the culinary arts at Johnson & Wales University in Denver, his first experience at V. Mertz was under Chef Jon Seymour, during which time they “cooked everything that sounded good.” Hungry for knowledge, Newton spent time learning from several local chefs, then spent a few years in Charleston working for James Beard award-winning chef Mike Lata. It was there that he learned how to run a successful restaurant. His takeaway? Leadership is about fostering a cohesive culture in which

everyone has the confidence to embrace history and step boldly into the future. Menu options change daily to take advantage of seasonality, which is best expressed in the chef’s tasting menu. According to Newton, “Ingredients can be local but flavors global, and local doesn’t have to be within 50 miles.” Sustainably farmed and line-caught seafood round out the fresh menu options. In the dearth of winter, when fresh vegetables are scarce, focus moves to mushrooms, local microgreens, and edible flowers. Recently, a derivation of their house-made gluten-free cracker was used to crust gorgeous oyster mushrooms from Flavor Country Farms. The satisfying vegetable-forward dish is served with sauce Espagnole, cranberry mostarda, and a flavorful horseradish gremolata. Local proteins, including Morgan Ranch Wagyu beef from Burwell, Nebraska, are always featured, including the 8-ounce strip used in the popular pepper steak. Steak au poivre (steak with peppercorn sauce) is nearly always
on the menu, and on this day featured bone marrow emulsion and broccolini, nestled near écrasée de pommes and smoked butter. “The beef remains constant, but the sides change seasonally,” explained Newton. The kitchen takes great pride in offering house-made charcuterie, crackers, and accoutrements, and features a rotating menu of artisan cheeses as either a starter or dessert. Bread service featured fresh toasted coconut rolls brushed with pork fat and served with smoked butter. Pastry Chef Ally Peralta brings a joyful creativity to the kitchen, experimenting with unique flavor combinations grounded in solid French technique. Featured on the dessert menu this winter was an elderflower pavlova served with yogurt, quince foam, and candied celery. Brown encourages service staff to take their own path by providing different routes to learning, resulting in genuine, inspired, and thoughtful service. When interacting with guests, Brown advises servers to “never be afraid of not knowing something.” Wise words coming from

such a knowledgeable person. In the eight years he’s been managing the restaurant, Brown has achieved four sommelier levels and is currently working on the multi-faceted and notoriously challenging Master Sommelier certification. Boasting over 400 bottles, the wine list at V. Mertz is certain to have a bottle or glass that will enhance the dining experience. “Wines reflect specific areas of the world and work with food in a harmonious way,” said Brown, who works closely with Newton to develop pairing recommendations that elevate both food and wine, often in surprising ways. Certified Sommeliers on staff are happy to provide personalized pairings for any item on the menu, and a creative
cocktail menu is available for those who prefer a more spirited accompaniment to their meal. Both Newton and Brown describe the V. Mertz dining experience as customizable, serving guests through keen observation and intentional conversation. This service philosophy manifests itself through small, thoughtful touches such as personalized menus, cozy intimate tables reserved for special occasions, or simply remembering personal preferences across visits. In addition to managing V. Mertz, Brown is in his second term as president of the Omaha Restaurant Association (ORA), an organization that provides a network of support to local restaurant
owners, as well as myriad philanthropic pursuits in the community. Omaha offers diverse, high quality fare, and the ORA continues to foster the city’s unique, collaborative community of food-service professionals. At V. Mertz, Brown and Newton feel a responsibility to honor the tradition and history, yet are emboldened and unafraid to adapt. “We want to customize new experiences while preserving past stories and traditions,” shared Brown. Over the years, the restaurant had changed in subtle ways but remains genuinely focused on facilitating unforgettable guest-centered moments through excellent food, wine, and service. APRIL 2020

WORTH THE HAUL If you’re looking for a nearby getaway this year, head down to Kansas City, the City of Fountains. One of the most famous fountains is the J.C. Nichols Memorial Fountain, which anchors one end of Country Club Plaza. Built in Paris in 1910 and later salvaged, it found its current home in 1951. The Plaza also serves as an ideal location to stay while in Kansas City, and there’s no hotel more appropriate to complement your stay in the City of Fountains than The Fontaine hotel. Previously known as Hotel Sorella, it changed ownership in 2018 and has recently undergone renovations while keeping some of its original, signature Italian-inspired décor. Jenna Phillips, Associate Director of Sales, said the four-diamond property offers “approachable luxury.” This is evident from the new Peloton bikes in the hotel’s fitness center, the city’s only hotel with a rooftop pool, and the hotel’s complimentary Tesla shuttle. With 132 rooms, including 9 suites and an 1,800 sq. ft. presidential suite with private pavilion, The Fontaine is ideal for corporate and personal travel, including a variety of events for all guests. There are two ballrooms that hold 100 and 150 guests, respectively; as well as an outdoor serenity garden for private events. Morning coffee in the cafe and craft cocktails served nightly in the solarium, in addition to a number of events, such as kids classes, wellness activities, and pool dances add to the fun atmosphere of The Fontaine. One of the hotel’s treasures is the Parker rooftop restaurant with its spectacular views overlooking The Plaza. There is a lounge and bar, private wine room that seats up to 16, flexible meeting space, and the rooftop pool. Serving breakfast, dinner, and weekend brunch, Executive Chef Ryan Spruhan strives to serve “a progressive take on new American classics with local soul.” Every aspect of The Fontaine is unique and truly represents the Kansas City community. hat do two energetic, outgoing, eight-year-old twins do to pass the time? Paint, of course! Ava and Mala Shakya not only love to paint, their natural ambition led them to create their own YouTube channel so they can teach other kids how to paint. In fact, they’ve channeled their inner Bob Ross to become Mini Bob and Ross—their on-screen personalities. The duo also created their own business, Color World, which debuted at the Acton Academy Children’s Business Fair where they won a trophy for Best Presentation.

Edge: How did you both get started painting? Mala: We started last summer after I got a painting set. Our dad used to paint, so he taught us as a hobby. Ava: Then we got our own professional watercolor set. Mala: Even when we go on vacation, our dad fills empty spice bottles with paint so we have them with us. Edge: How did you come up with the idea to start a YouTube channel? Ava: We wanted to share the painting techniques we’d learned by doing videos. Mala: The intro to our video starts with Ava cloning herself so she has a friend to keep her company. Ava: And then we liked the idea of a name after Bob Ross, so we came up with Mini Bob and Ross. Edge: Which one is Bob, and which is Ross?
Ava: I’m Bob. Mala: I’m Ross. Edge: How did you start your business? Mala: We like painting so much, we wanted to sell our art, so we started Color World. We had our first booth at the Acton Children’s Business Fair last fall. Ava: We sold a lot of paintings! And we made $127. We also won an award for Best Presentation. Edge: That’s fantastic! What is your favorite part about painting? Mala: I like the shading technique with watercolors. My favorite thing to paint is the monkey. Ava: My favorite thing to paint is a koala and the Royal Pink Lily that we photographed at Lauritzen Gardens. Edge: What else do you enjoy doing when you’re not painting? Ava: I like reading and writing.
Mala: I like math and art. And we both take piano, gymnastics, and coding. Edge: How do the girls’ personalities complement each other? Olivia Shakya: One may be having a bad day and the other steps up. Or when one may feel reluctant or scared to do something, the other will do it, or they talk to each other and manage to do it as a team. Edge: What makes you most proud about what they do? Olivia: Their ability to surprise us. Even when it’s something they’ve never done before, they do it a lot better than expected. With their YouTube videos— they make it look so easy. Edge: What is your goal for Color World? Ava: We want to use our business as a way to help create more homeless shelters, because not everyone has what we do.

OLYMPIC ASPIRATIONS Lauren Mayo | Senior | Elkhorn South High School By SHELLY NOSBISCH Swimming is a way of life for Elkhorn South senior Lauren Mayo. “Swimming has brought me a bit of stability, so I center my life around it emotionally, too,” she said. “It gives me a purpose besides working hard in school.” Mayo started swimming because she needed an outlet for all her energy. “I was a high-energy little eight-year-old and needed something to do over the summer.” She loved it so much she started training year-round and hasn’t stopped. Mayo swims for the Elkhorn High School swim team, which combines both Elkhorn and Elkhorn South students. She also swims with many of the same students and coaches year-round for the Aquatic Club of Elkhorn (ACE). “I’ve known a lot of my teammates for seven or eight years now, and I’ve been with my coach for just as long, so it’s like my second family,” she said. “My brother also swims for our club team. So my life and my family revolve around swimming, and I love it.” Her team has some fun traditions, such as having donut eating competitions at the end of practice. For example, for birthdays, they line up at the sides of the lanes with giant kickboards and splash as much as they can while the birthday person has to swim through it and back. Elkhorn High School and ACE swim coach, Jay Thiltgen, believes that Lauren’s “tenacity and constant chase to be better” make her stand out. At the recent Nebraska State Swimming & Diving Championships, Mayo swam the 200 Free in 1:53.62 to become the 2020 High School Women’s 200 Free Champion. In the 100 Free she placed 3rd with a time of 52.76. She also led off the 400 Free Relay to place 3rd with a time of 3:32.99 just behind Lincoln Southwest and Marian. Her 200 Free Relay placed 4th. Mayo aspires to swim in the Olympics someday. “Being able to see the Olympic trials in person, you get the feeling that this is what I want, this is where I need to be.” Mayo plans to major in biochemical engineering, but she’s still waiting to hear from some universities before she commits for next year. Undoubtedly, she will be swimming wherever she goes.

FOCUSED ON THE
FUTURE Max Murrell | Senior | Millard North High School By SHELLY NOSBISCH When Millard North senior Max Murrell started playing on the freshman basketball team, he never imagined he’d be recruited by Division I schools from as far away as California, Virginia, and Texas. “I never really envisioned myself as someone playing at a high level in college,” he said. A down-to-earth kid, Murrell’s basketball dreams seemed to be shattered when he broke his right tibia and severed his patellar tendon the summer before his freshman year. Surgery was followed by six weeks of crutches and six more weeks of not bending his leg. “It was tough, mentally, thinking about how I was going to come back and whether I was still going to be as good.” Murrell had to have a second surgery in the spring, but the following summer before his sophomore year, his basketball career really took off. “I was swinging JV and varsity and then by the end of the year it was just varsity, and I was starting. I got my first offer the summer before my junior year to UMKC (University of Missouri—Kansas City), and then the summer after my junior year is when everything kind of blew up. I started getting offers from places like Creighton, Iowa, Nebraska, Minnesota, Drake, Stanford, Virginia Tech, Kansas State, and TCU.” The Millard North varsity team had five seniors this year who played together since they were freshmen. The team was focused on redeeming themselves after
a buzzer beater in districts kept them out of the state tournament last year. “It was really upsetting to the whole team,” Murrell said. “We don’t want that feeling ever again.” After considering all his options, Murrell accepted the offer from Stanford. He said it was kind of tough for his family. “I think they definitely had places that they wanted me to look at more than others, but we’re all pretty happy with the decision I made. They did a really good job of letting me come to that decision on my own.” Murrell is looking forward to playing for Stanford, but he hopes to someday have a professional career in the NBA or overseas. “I always want to play at the highest level that I can.”
