This
month Edge Magazine is celebrating its 6th anniversary! I’m so proud to be part of it, and I feel like it just keeps getting better!
This month also marks the launch of our new publication, Dine Magazine. With a focus on the food and beverage industry, we are elevating the Nebraska dining experience. Growing the Edge Publishing brand has been one of my goals, and it’s so exciting to see it come to fruition. We couldn’t have the success and growth that we do without community support. We want every business to have wins. Showcasing that in print is a passion of mine. Print media is a community’s heartbeat and history in the making. Our cover story is about another business celebrating growth. Proof Whiskey Bar & Craft Cocktails is expanding into West Omaha this fall. Joel Lavelle and Kyron O’Brien’s approach to a simple yet upscale cocktail provides a great place to catch up for a happy hour or even add to your knowledge about certain spirits. Nic Bianchi, a Papillion-La Vista High School student, is also celebrating five
years as a business owner this fall. Starting with one candle order and expanding to a business with three candle lines, this young entrepreneur has a bright future ahead. One rotation at a time, the AllCore360 machine located at Legacy Yoga, Pilates and More can help get your core in shape. Owner Mindy Duff is ready to take the way you look and feel to a whole new level. As always, I value your feedback. Please reach out to us with questions or comments. We’d love to see you at our upcoming Inside Edge event on November 7th at Interiors Joan and Associates. Watch for event information on our Facebook page. Whether they are designing a custom or new build home, Carraher said strong attention to detail is key. “When we are designing, we go in with the mindset of a client. We try to think of every element that will make the space easily utilized and offer the most convenience for a family.” Within minutes from the city, this 5,440 sq. ft., three-level home offers six bedrooms, five bathrooms, and a seven-car garage. The spacious garage also houses a basketball court on one end. On the inside, the open layout is especially suited for entertaining. Windows overlooking the lake extend through each room, reminding guests of the spectacular views. The LED lighting in the home is another plus, as well as the stand-out fixtures in each room. Hidden fans tucked inside some of the light fixtures adds yet another distinct element. Carraher said the overall white and gray color scheme of the estate works as a blank slate that can be customized by a family with its choice of colors and accents. On the main floor, the light-colored kitchen features a backsplash that reaches the ceiling and trendy black stainless steel appliances. The sink is built into the tall island, which is especially designed for guests to stand around during gatherings. Additionally, the walk-in pantry leads out from the kitchen to the entryway by the garage for easy access.
Another rare feature of this home is the tile walls in the dining area. The airy feel of the home follows into the main living room area, where a walk-out patio deck can be accessed through 12-ft. sliding doors. Serene and spa-reminiscent, the master bath incorporates floor-toceiling tile throughout the space. The walk-in shower is equipped with dual shower heads with a separate tub for soaking nearby. Additionally, the fixtures in the master bath conveniently change color depending on the temperature of the water. Off the bath, the walk-in closet features a laundry area for a washer and dryer, further emphasizing the practicality of the home. Once upstairs, there are additional bedrooms, a Jack and Jill bathroom, and a roomy kid’s landing zone. In the lower level, the 10-ft. ceilings, large entertaining spot, and additional kitchen is especially inviting. Guests can easily walk out to the patio area, which offers a gas fireplace and built-in seating. A particularly unique concept to the basement includes a space dubbed as the “lake room,” where kayaks and other lake essentials can be stored. The room, which can also be accessed from outside, houses a separate laundry area, and the tile floor throughout the basement is ideal for coming in from the water. Additionally, one of the notable perks of the basement is the home theater, which allows for front and back row seating.

The smart home is essentially WiFi-controlled, as the thermostat and speakers throughout the rooms can be adjusted through a mobile phone. The house also features a special HVAC system, which can efficiently control the zones of the home, heating and cooling each room separately at the most desired temperature. The direction of the home itself is one of the most critical components, according to Harvey. “We ensure that every window in the house has a supreme view. We also grade the lot so that we can build without retaining walls, giving the home a cleaner look. He also stressed that Maxim Homes stands behind its build, even after the home is purchased. Carraher and Harvey are Luxury Collection Certified with Berkshire Hathaway. Maxim Homes and Meraki Realty Group are currently working on their next build at Bennington Lake. This home was officially listed on the market in early September. For more information, contact Eric Carraher or Jack Harvey with Meraki Realty Group at 402-800-8408.

The power of artwork
Hanging a piece of artwork on a wall is like placing your heart on your sleeve. It’s thrusting your soul into the open world for all to see, and it’s the defining element to most spaces. Within the realms of interior design, art is a make or break element to the overall workings of a room. When it comes to knowing the trends and tips regarding artwork, the professional designers at Interiors Joan and Associates are well versed. Read on to see our top 5 tips for curating your own collection of art, then make plans to join us at our studio on November 7, 2019, for the next Inside Edge event, featuring a showing of original art.

A mix of framed canvas art and metal sculptural art gives your space interest, movement, and a mix of media, creating an unexpected result. The dimension and contrast in mediums causes the pieces to complement each other rather than clash with each other. Try a high-gloss finish on your canvas – this reflective quality gives your piece a heightened level of sophistication and an eye-catching interest with its shine. Know your art. Be confident and comfortable with your investment. An original piece created by the artist is often a collectible, heirloom work of art that is handed down in families and sold in galleries or by professional dealers. A giclee is an original piece that is printed on canvas using an extremely high-resolution inkjet printer, and then the image is hand embellished with paint. This process is reminiscent of a “color by number” procedure, and the end result

is a less expensive piece that has many qualities of the original, including the unique textures of the paint and brush. A print is the least expensive artistic option, and is a literal print of the original on paper. Build your space around your art. If you have a special piece of art that is meaningful you should work with your designer to build the surrounding space around that piece. A room can be designed and fit around a fabulous piece of art. The art doesn’t necessarily have to fit the room first. Mix your art to create a personalized gallery. You should love the pieces you hang on the wall. They are a direct reflection of you. Experiment with mixing contemporary pieces in traditional room settings, or vice versa. Use a collection of mixed medias and different styles, sizes and subjects. This results in an exciting collection that really tells your story.

raft cocktails have been enjoying the lime light for quite some time. Much of that is thanks to the immersive experience people get as they watch bartenders work their magic right before their eyes. But the pleasure of craft cocktails doesn’t come from being fancy. Rather, it’s more about being able to enjoy an approachable cocktail in an upscale atmosphere. Proof Whiskey Bar & Craft Cocktails in Midtown Crossing not only has a full menu of craft cocktails, but it has an abundance of whiskey offerings as well as other drinks that truly appeal to everyone.

Two years ago, Proof owners Joel Lavelle and Kyron O’Brien purchased the location that was previously Grain in Midtown Crossing. Lavelle has worked in every position imaginable in the service industry before co-owning Proof with O’Brien. “Our focus has always remained the same: Quality over quantity,” Lavelle said. Proof isn’t your average bar. You won’t find big screen TVs and a loud atmosphere. What you will find is class, expertise, and education around all things whiskey and bourbon related. “The concept was to create a space easy to meet for conversations, first dates, and overall, a relaxing atmosphere,” Lavelle said. “Something more approachable and at ease. and T-shirts, we want it to be inviting and welcoming to everyone. Also being part of Midtown, we get a lot of people stopping in that are attending the local events such as Jazz on the Green, farmers markets, and various concerts.” While whiskies are certainly a focus point for Proof, they have an ever-changing menu of cocktails and always have local beer on tap. “The local breweries are doing some really nice stuff,” Lavelle said. You can expect to find some unique cocktails and a menu that changes every three to four months. Trends and weather play a big role in the cocktail menu. House-made syrups, fresh-squeezed juice, and an herb garden are all components used in the craft cocktails. “We are pushing the
envelope with our cocktails by using the fresh ingredients and keeping it simple but delicious,” Lavelle said. The selection at Proof can be overwhelming. There are many whiskies from around the world to choose from. Traditionally, whiskies are enjoyed neat, on the rocks, or with just a splash of water. The staff doesn’t want you to feel intimidated though. They are there to help you enjoy what you already know and expand your interest. To round out the experience at Proof, fresh ingredient small plates are available Thursday through Saturday evening. The space is available for private events, and guests are welcome to have catered food brought in. If you are looking to expand your

knowledge around whiskies, there are three to five formal tastings each year. Seating is limited to keep the experience very personal. The events are hosted mostly by the well-educated staff, and some events have brand ambassadors present to educate and provide samples. Proof hopes to soon work with Dan Crowell, the US Brand Ambassador for Glemorangie, who is also an Omaha native. Lavelle said they want the formal tastings to be educational and fun. “From beginner to connoisseur, everyone is sure to have a great time and learn about brands. From their history, where and who they are, and why they do what they do.” Outside of the formal tasting events, there are also various charity events hosted at Proof. “Having two giant German Shepherds at home, I love getting involved and giving back to many of the charities for animals,” Lavelle said. “We’ve also hosted events for the Ronald McDonald House, animal shelters, First Responders, veterans, and recently with the Red Cross during the spring to help with flood relief efforts. We are proud to help give back to our community.” Private barrel picks are often very sought after by avid whiskey fans. Choosing a barrel can happen a couple of ways. Samples can be sent to you or you can travel to the distillery and choose the barrel that best represents the flavors you are looking for. Last year, Proof had a private barrel pick of Blantons. This year they are looking for something a little different. “We have a new barrel coming this fall. We are looking for something that stands out with a profile that represents the brand.” Private barrel picks rarely last long since their quantities are limited. Proof Whiskey Club is a membership that provides better discounts, rare retail items, opportunities for private barrel picks, and discounted private events. Proof will soon be opening a second location near 192nd and Maple to better serve the West Omaha community. “The five-year goal is to have five unique concepts throughout Omaha,” Lavelle explained. “We have an amazing staff that’s more like a giant family.” Each location will offer cocktail enthusiasts a quality drink in an inviting atmosphere that will enhance your overall experience.

Spezia strives to make every dining experience special
n a city where steak reigns supreme, offering an exceptional, quality, and consistent product can prove challenging. But when a restaurant strives for that, it often results in long-term success. That’s what Spezia’s Chef Operating Partner Brian Reilly has been focused on for the past 15 years, earning him a loyal local following as well as repeat visitors from across the country.

Reilly’s introduction into the culinary world began as a work-study job when he was a senior in high school. A nice break from his daily chores on the family farm, he decided to later attend Iowa Western’s culinary school and started working on Spezia’s salad line. He worked his way up over the years and eventually bought into the business. But, even today, he still works on that same salad line when needed. Although the restaurant itself hasn’t changed much over the past 15 years, Reilly has certainly made some important changes. The most notable is that he helped develop the restaurant’s own brand of steak called 1920 All Natural Angus. “It’s from a local company that is one of the highest qualities of beef you can find anywhere, and I’m really proud of the partnership we’ve developed,” Reilly said. He receives the aged meat and then personally hand-cuts it in-house. “It takes a lot of the guesswork out of it so that every single steak is always great.” He also thinks it’s important for diners to understand that there are differences between the types of steaks served at different restaurants, including preparation. Spezia’s specialty is its wood-fire grill. They start the fire every morning using oak or ash wood and run it all day. The restaurant’s fresh seafood—salmon and scallops flown in daily—are all cooked on the grill, which requires a certain level of talent to do it properly and consistently. “It’s all challenging since steak needs high heat whereas seafood needs to be cooked at a lower heat and more gently,” Reilly explained. That labor of love is what makes some of Spezia’s signature dishes so desirable. The wood-grilled filet can be paired with jumbo shrimp, diver scallops, or Scottish salmon and served with locally-sourced broccolini. The rack of lamb is wood-grilled and then oven roasted with garlic and rosemary and served with wood-grilled portobello mushrooms and a side of mashed potatoes. The seafood risotto includes shrimp, scallops, green lip muscles and fresh asparagus. No matter what dish you choose, be sure to top it off with Spezia’s signature tiramisu. Reilly also enjoys the restaurant’s seasonal menus and has brought back a fall favorite: peach chicken. The dish incorporates wood-fire grilled chicken, O C TO B E R 2 0 1 9

best and focus on our guests who come in regularly,” he said. The restaurant’s location—right off Interstate 80 and 72nd Street—also makes it an ideal location for travelers, many of whom visit every time they pass through town. The seasoned staff is another reason that Reilly credits Spezia’s consistency. He said it’s so important that when you take the time to train someone, they
stay long-term, especially since his and the restaurant’s reputation depend on it. “What makes us different is having that mentality that you can always do more, and I’ve always been someone who gives more than I take,” Reilly said. “The restaurant industry is held to such a high standard, and we make sure we take care of our customers and live up to that.”

At Falcone Homes, we have designed and built many custom homes with amazing indoor/outdoor spaces. They can be used in any season and make for an incredible entertaining area. However, a functional, usable, and beautiful outdoor living area is not achieved easily. Each design element is crucial and is taken very seriously. New and unique concepts are perfected in our homes to provide our clients with the best possible living spaces. We achieve this by incorporating large panelized doors on the main level. When fully opened, they double the size of the living area. With one giant shift, your great room is transformed into a massive entertaining mecca. As a result, it is imperative that the exterior space matches the interior. Stained concrete floors, beadboard ceilings, and smooth stucco walls in a covered area are all great ideas. The next step in the design process 38 |

is climate control and interior comfort. Falcone Homes uses retractable insect and vinyl screens to keep the insects and weather out. Gas fire pits keep the area warm and cozy on chilly nights. Infrared heaters installed within the ceiling are also utilized. These heating units are unique because they can distribute heat directly to a person, table, or floor, warming objects rather than the air. The heat can be dispensed evenly and will not simply blow away in windy or drafty conditions. For comfortable use of the space in the summer heat, we can install A/C mini-split units that will keep the air cool. Wiring the outdoor space for audio/ visual is a must for a great place to watch the big game or listen to your favorite tunes while entertaining. TVs and in-ceiling speakers can be controlled with an app on your phone, and that same application also controls any outdoor cameras.

ccasionally people ask, “Why would you have an indoor/ outdoor living space in Nebraska?” The thought that you need to live in Arizona, California, or Florida to experience yearround enjoyment of the outdoors is simply not right. What people don’t know is that some Nebraskans enjoy all four seasons from the comfort of their own home.
Being able to enjoy all the beautiful seasons that Nebraska has to offer is possible, you just need the design, vision, and mindset to make it happen. Give Falcone Homes a call if you are interested in building an amazing custom home, and we can design an indoor/ outdoor living space that will make you the envy of many.

Let Lisa Lehan with Koley Jessen guide you through the estate planning process

ur loved ones are the most valuable aspect of life, and we go to great lengths to ensure they are safe, protected, and well cared for. It only makes sense that we’d want that to continue well after we’re gone, and one of the easiest ways to do that is by having an estate plan in place. Unfortunately, many people neglect to do so despite life events such as marriage, having children, divorce, or becoming widowed, and they end up with additional worries during the sorrow and stress of losing a loved one, or additional burdens are placed upon their children when something happens to themselves. Yet all it takes is a trusted, experienced, and caring attorney to help navigate the estate planning process.

OUR business
Lisa Lehan has always had the passion to care for people. As a child growing up in Kearney, NE, she knew she wanted to be a lawyer because she thought it’d be a good way to help others. She attended Creighton University with law school in mind, and after earning her accounting degree, she continued right into law school. Lehan’s knack for numbers made estate and tax planning a natural fit, and after working in private practice and in-house for a Fortune 500 company, she joined Koley Jessen in December of 2015 and became a shareholder in May of 2016. With a specialty in tax controversy, she helped grow 46 |

the firm’s tax practice group while also focusing on estate planning. At the most basic level, an estate plan is made up of four documents: a last will and testament, a revocable trust, a durable power of attorney, and an advance directive. Depending upon a person’s family objectives and level of wealth, some individuals may need additional documents, but anyone who owns a home or has children should have the basic documents in place to handle financial matters. In addition, everyone should designate a person to make medical decisions on their behalf. “It’s important to have a plan in place so
your family can focus on other things while they’re grieving,” Lehan said. “Even with a plan, it’s understandably an overwhelming time, so all a family member has to do is call me and I can help them through the process of executing the plan.” One of the biggest misconceptions about estate planning is that it’s as simple as filling out a form found online. Lehan explained it’s a lot more involved than that. In fact, much of what Lehan does is educate clients about what each document means and help them understand how property flows once someone has passed away. She draws diagrams

and flowcharts so her clients have a picture of their individual plan, which is often easier to follow than reading legal documents. Another barrier is that people are afraid to make the decisions necessary for an estate plan, such as who will be the guardian of your minor children or who will make medical decisions if you cannot make them yourself. As a mother of three young kids, Lehan has had to make these same decisions herself, and she explains that some decisions may change over time. For example, if you have additional children, perhaps your guardian nomination changes. “I tell clients about my own decision-making process and provide suggestions for them to consider,” she said. “You can make changes to your estate plan as circumstances change, and you should review your plan every few years for this reason, but making an initial decision 48 |

is important. At the end of the day, it’s better to have something in place rather than nothing.” On the tax controversy side, Lehan helps businesses and business owners resolve tax disputes, including income tax, sales tax, employment tax, and penalty matters. With both tax and estate planning, Lehan said the work has so many nuances that it’s different and challenging every day. And Koley Jessen has been rapidly growing—with 84 attorneys and 140 total employees— to better serve clients. “We have a very driven team that is smart, fun, and energetic. We all keep each other motivated to provide client service that is above and beyond,” she said. Lehan also appreciates how supportive her team is so that she can enjoy a healthy balance of work and home life, which she said requires having a strong support system. “My husband and I have
a true partnership, we both have parents who help out, and we have quality educators and child care for our kids. I also have a good group of friends who are professional working moms with kids the same age, so we support each other as well.” Although nobody wants to discuss what happens after they pass away, Lehan can’t emphasize enough how important it is to have that estate plan in place. She and her firm have gone to great lengths to help alleviate any anxiety one might have over meeting with an attorney, from the comfortable, bright, inviting office space to Lehan’s caring approach. “If you choose the right firm and the right lawyer, there’s nothing to be anxious about,” she said. “There’s a reason attorneys are called ‘counselors.’ We are here to listen and help you make these decisions so that you can feel confident your family will be cared for.”

Revolutionary Core Therapy and Fitness now in Omaha
i
t’s no secret that having a strong core is key to one’s stability, balance, and overall health. Sit-ups, ab crunch machines, and planks have traditionally been the go-to exercises to strengthen your core. But these techniques only work a portion of the muscles. In fact, more than 50 muscles comprise a person’s entire core, which is all 360 degrees of your body’s trunk. And now there’s a machine that can address all of those muscles in one 10-minute workout: The AllCore360. Local fitness instructor Mindy Duff has brought the equipment to Omaha and is helping improve people’s health one rotation at a time.

The way the AllCore360 machine works is relatively simple—if you can sit in a chair, you can use the machine. Secured in the padded seat with a lap belt and a stability ball between your knees, the chair tilts back at an angle between 90 and 0 degrees, with the latter being the most difficult setting. You start at an angle appropriate for your fitness level. The machine makes a minute-long rotation in one direction, and then 52 |
EDGE
another minute-long rotation in the other direction. The entire 10-minute workout consists of five rotations in each direction. Muscles throughout your entire core—front, back, and sides—are engaged at different points during the rotation. Scott Bertrand, inventor of the AllCore360 out of Atlanta, GA, spent three decades refining and perfecting the machine. After suffering two spinal cord
injuries, one during a skydiving accident while a member of the 101st Airborne, Bertrand grew frustrated with traditional rehab therapies that were limited in the number of core muscles addressed. So he set out to develop a way to strengthen the entire core, not just a few of its muscles. “It’s a lot like trying to improve your golf swing by only swinging the club a few inches,” he said. “In order for the core to be optimized, it needs to
be challenged in all 360 degrees of its functionality. The only way this machine doesn’t work is if you don’t sit in it and use it.” Similar to Bertrand, Duff spent much of her adult life suffering from chronic back issues and tried every type of therapy possible. Her journey took her to the Laser Spine Institute in Tampa, FL, which helped improve her symptoms tremendously by having minimally invasive spine surgery. Because of her treatment at the Laser Spine Institute, Duff appeared on the TV show The Doctors with one of the institute’s surgeons. After her appearance on the show, Duff kept in touch with the institute’s former CEO for several years. Then a year ago, he called Duff and introduced her to the AllCore360. “I had never seen anything like it and had to try it,” she said. “As soon as I got on the machine, I loved it. Instantly.” Duff was so impressed she decided to purchase a machine, which is the first in the Midwest—there are currently only 60 in the field throughout the country. While looking for a permanent location, she kept
it at QLI Rehabilitation Center and was amazed at how much it helped the wheelchair patient population—something that Bertrand also noted. Now Duff has space for the machine at Legacy Yoga, Pilates, and More, where she is able to easily meet clients for their 10-minute session. When done consistently three times per week, Duff said it helps improve back pain, balance, and stability—all critical for the elderly—and overall strength, muscle tone and weight loss for everyone. Becky Wincek has been using the AllCore360 with Duff for the past six months and said she’s had noticeable improvement with her core strength, her posture has improved, and she has less back pain to the point where she has fewer visits to her chiropractor. “I’m limited in what I can do for weight lifting and other exercise because of previous shoulder surgery, but that doesn’t hamper my ability to use the AllCore360,” she said. “It’s now part of my overall health regime to keep my body as strong as I can.” Bertrand pointed out that some of
the most prominent institutions have implemented the AllCore360 into their programs, such as the Shepherd Center in Atlanta, The Kessler Foundation in New Jersey, Clemson University, Georgia Tech University, and University of Georgia. Professional athletes such as PGA golfer Jordan Spieth also routinely uses the machine. “Word of mouth has been so powerful with this,” Bertrand said. “If you know anyone who could use this machine—a stroke victim, someone with back pain, or someone wheelchair bound—they should try it.” Duff said for her personally, the machine has revived every aspect of her life, and she wants to help as many people now as she can. “Your core is your armor for everything you do, and it protects all your vital organs. It can help everyone from paraplegics to elite athletes and should be standard equipment in all physical therapy offices, chiropractic offices, sports training facilities, and elite gyms. It will take the way you look and feel to a whole different level.”

Is it ADHD or is it the eyes? By DR. STEPHEN STINN
ADHD is becoming increasingly more common. Whether a child has an official diagnosis or not, hyperactivity and inattention in the classroom are at an all-time high. Kids are having trouble sitting still, paying attention, focusing, reading, and behaving properly in the classroom and at home. So many times I see ADHD-like symptoms caused by the eyes not working properly, and it’s not the same as having 20/20 vision—that would be visual acuity. What I’m talking about is ocular-motor skills, meaning, eyes being coordinated together and fluidly able to track your environment. In other words, are your eyes able to move like they should? For example, while reading, your eyes will first converge (meaning both eyes turn inward to focus on the word). Second, the eyes will track across the line. Third, when you get to the end of the line, you do what is called a saccade (when you dart your eyes back quickly to the next line). Let’s say a child’s eyes have difficulty converging. Or when they try to track their eyes smoothly they instead bounce and jump, or they’re not accurate on their saccade back to the next line. If they’re not able to do any one of these steps, then their reading comprehension goes out the window, they may be accused of not concentrating, they will have more behavioral blowups because they’re not able to do what the rest of the class is able to do, etc. And this is just one example of something as simple as reading, let alone everything else they do in school. The most common thing I see interfering with a child’s ability to coordinate their eyes properly are two specific primitive reflexes. The Asymmetric Tonic Neck Reflex (ATNR) and the Symmetric Tonic Neck Reflex (STNR). Almost every child I see that 54 |
EDGE
has ADHD-like symptoms, has these two reflexes. What my care provides is getting rid of these reflexes, which sets a proper foundation for the eyes to start working in harmony. If you think this could be the case for your child, I will extend a free primitive reflex assessment at the office if you mention this Edge magazine article. At the very least, you’d know if they have the reflexes that are holding the eyes back, which could very well be contributing to ADHD-like symptoms. Our office number is 402.504.4676. ixteen-year-old Nic Bianchi was an entrepreneur even before he knew what the word meant. At age seven, he sketched a logo without knowing that someday it would represent his company. At age 11, he bought novelty items from Oriental Trading, such as slap bracelets, and sold them to students at school. Then for his 12th birthday, he received a candle-making kit that launched into a full-fledged business. Today, the Papillion-La Vista High School junior owns and operates Bianchi Candle Company, which are handmade, all natural soy-based candles sold in local stores and online.

Edge: How did you go from a candlemaking kit to turning it into a business? Nic: I had a request from my sixth grade teacher to make 20 candles. She gave me the jars and $20 per jar and said she wanted them all to have a vanilla scent. That night I told my family I wanted to start a candle business. Edge: Did you have to do a lot of research to learn how to make candles in bulk? Nic: I’m a natural mathematician and scientist, so I loved researching all the different types of waxes, wicks, and jars. I’m still using the same jars today as I started with. Edge: Why did you decide on soy-based candles? Nic: Because it’s all-natural, doesn’t react to people’s allergies, and burns clean without the black soot. Plus it smells natural and not like chemicals. Edge: Tell us about the different product lines you have. Nic: The original candles are called The Wild Worksmen, and that line uses the logo I drew when I was seven. At age 13, I launched the Bianchi Candle, which is a higher-end white candle with very fresh scents. The name Bianchi means “white,” so it fit perfectly. Last summer, I added another line called Yes You Candle, which are inspirational with words such as Joy, Hope, and Bravery. I also do specialty candles, such as Nebraska Strong for the recent floods. Edge: Where do you make the candles? Nic: I built my own shop off our garage at home. I bought a commercial wax melter for $3000 three years ago and had it paid
off within the first month after purchasing it. Edge: How many candles can you make at a time? Nic: I have room in the shop to make 600 candles a day, but it’s built to expand so I could make up to 1500 a day if needed. Edge: Where do you sell the candles? Nic: I started out selling them at local craft shows and then got into a few boutiques such as Made in Omaha, Kajamas, The Afternoon, and House of J. They are also sold seasonally at Borsheims, will soon be in Scheels, and my goal is to get them into Macy’s. They are also available on Amazon and my web site, www. bianchicandleco.com. Edge: How do you have time to run the business while you’re still in high school? Nic: I took extra classes last year so that this year I only have to go to class half
days. That way I’m available to do sales, go to meetings, and travel for trade shows. My teachers have all been really understanding, especially when I have to take a work call during class. Edge: What are your plans for the near future? Nic: Each year has been so different, I don’t know what the end goal will be. I might continue to grow the company really big, or I might eventually sell it. I’m interested in possibly going into the Navy, and ultimately I think I’d like to work for a non-profit. Edge: Why should someone purchase a candle from Bianchi Candle Co? Nic: Because you’re not just buying a product, you’re buying a story and an experience behind it. Whether it’s to do something kind for yourself or for someone else, it’s helping something bigger within the community.

DETERMINED
DEFENDER
Faith Kutschkau | Junior | Millard North High School Story by SHELLY NOSBISCH A defender for Millard North as well as her Elkhorn Soccer Club team, Faith Kutschkau has played soccer since she was five years old. She also dreams of playing for one of the University of Nebraska teams in college. A goal not far out of reach since her club coach, Marissa Ringblom, calls Faith’s work ethic “second to none.” Faith had to overcome disappointment early in her high school soccer career though. “Freshman year I made JV, but a lot of my friends made varsity. They went on to win state, and I was sitting in the stands. That was the moment when I said, ‘You know what? I want to make varsity next year.’ So I worked really hard and ended up making varsity as a sophomore.” Another aspiration of Faith’s is to earn a degree in business and have her own hair salon. She’s already got a start, stepping in as her team’s stylist. “For the high school season, I would do five to seven players’ hair right before the game. They all like to match, so I would be the person to do it.” When not on the soccer pitch, Faith’s family spends as much time as they can at the lake. “Growing up on the water, I learned how to wakeboard and ski,” Faith said. “Plus, when my dad is driving the boat, we do some pretty intense tubing.” She also likes to hang out with friends at the mall or at the movies. She and her soccer friends call themselves the “‘Morning Squad’—we hang out at school all the time and on special occasions we get each other donuts in the morning.” Faith leads by example and is always willing to sacrifice for her team, making it easy for her coach to name her as a captain this year. According to Ringblom, “Faith is the kind of kid who you can’t take off of the field because we need both her physical presence and her competitive spirit at all times. Every time I think we are in trouble and the other team is encroaching into our box, Faith flies in and makes a tackle or clears the ball for us. She will fight to win every single ball even when it seems out of reach.”

I overcame that by lifting weights and running on my own time.” His commitment has paid off. This past summer, he worked out with the football team, played summer basketball with the Millard South varsity team, and also played with the Millard Bulls, a youth basketball program that his father Lamain runs. He plans to attend a four-year college and play college football, but for now, “I just want to make it through and get good grades.” Lance is looking forward to the football season and hopes to duplicate the success he had in middle school, where he led the team in tackles on defense, as well as in rushing and touchdowns. One game in particular was a highlight. He got a pick six in the middle of the field for 60 yards and later had a 99-yard touchdown. Freshman football coach Tyler Renken believes, “Lance is an explosive athlete with huge upside in football. For a freshman, his size and explosiveness make him a mismatch on offense and really versatile on defense.” Lance comes from a sports family. “This is a family business, so everybody’s involved,” Lamain Sr. said. Lance’s older brother, Lamain Jr. (21), won a state championship in wrestling and played football and basketball. His younger brother, Lamar (12), also plays football and basketball. “My wife played basketball and was a cheerleader, and I played football, basketball, and baseball, so this is a sports family,” Lamain said. “We all support each other.” In fact, it’s a house rule that every family member attends every game. Lance is always striving to improve his skills, including learning how to dunk. He can now dunk with one hand, two hands, or even catch a pass and dunk. “When I was 13 years old, I tried to dunk all the time in practice and I’d always get stuck at the rim and fall. I kept trying, and then one day before a game, I said, ‘I’m going to try it.’ I didn’t realize I’d dunked until I came down.” Tim Leuschen, head basketball coach at Millard South, said, “Look for big things from him over the next four years and beyond.”
