Exploring the Food Chain All living things rely on other living things for food. Eating is really taking energy into your body. Energy starts from the sun and then transfers to each living thing through what they eat.

November 2021 • Issue 4

We get our energy from eating primary and secondary consumers.

Tertiary Consumers

We get our energy from eating primary consumers. Primary Source of Energy

Secondary Consumers We get our energy from eating the producers.

These take energy from nutrients in the soil (and water) and from the sun through photosynthesis.

FUN FACT:

Humans can be primary, secondary and tertiary consumers!

STRANGER THAN FICTION If any part of a food chain is disrupted, the whole ecosystem can fall apart. One example of this is the gray wolves in Yellowstone National Park. Check it out here: NationalGeographic.org/media/wolves-yellowstone FOR MORE ON THE FOOD CHAIN, SEE PAGE 3.
