Vocabulary I

Show off your English!

1. Group work First, work in pairs. Look at the words in the virtual space. Write down in Spanish the meaning of the words you know. Then, ask your classmates about the words you don’t know.

Example: Student A: What is the word for ‘notebook’ in Spanish? Student B: It is ‘cuaderno’.

Check your translations, and write the words on the correct list on the next page together with their meaning in Spanish until all the lists are complete.

2. Speak and write Can you create sentences in English using these words? Show your classmates. Write the sentences in your notebook.

3. Speak and think Look at the word cloud with the values. Which values are important to you? And which values do you think are essential at work?

4. Homework Create your own word cloud. Think of your hobbies or interests, your favourite place or your favourite singer. Look for related words and translate them into English using a dictionary. You can make your word cloud using an online tool, or you can draw it.

Verbs normally describe actions, but the verb to be indicates a state. We use the verb to be to describe a person or a thing or give information about our:

• name

• nationality

• age

• profession

• feelings

1. Write and speak The form of the verb to be with I is am. Study the example in the picture below. Write 6 sentences about yourself, similar to the example with Lucía, and then tell your classmates about yourself.

More uses of the verb to be

We also use the verb to be for:

Relationships: I am his best friend. She is my mother. They are my parents.

Marital status: I am married. You are single. My parents are divorced.

Location: Seville is in Spain. The laptop is on the desk. The workers are in the warehouse.

States: The laptop is new. The phone is broken. It is warm outside. The TV is on.

Identification: A piano is a musical instrument. Africa is a continent. It is a dog.

Times and dates: Tomorrow is Monday. It is the 2nd of November. It is 11 o’clock.

Demonstratives - This/That,These/Those Use

We use this, that, these and those to refer to things we are talking about.

We use this (singular) to refer to a single thing that is near to us and that (singular) to refer to things at some distance from us.

We use these (plural) to talk about things or people that are near to us and those (plural) to talk about things or people at some distance from us.

This is my new smartphone!

(1 thing or 1 person)

These are my brothers!

And that is my old mobile phone!

And those are my parents!

(2 or more things or a group of people)

1. Speak In two groups, practice saying sentences with this, that, these and those. Each group is on one side of the classroom. Hold an object in your hands and say sentences like the ones below. For example:
