Letter from the Chairman Happy New Year!

Human beings have the innate ability to expend useless energy focusing on the negative as opposed to seeing the positive that can present itself in almost any set of circumstances. It’s a gift that some of us excel at. However, some of the most trying moments in my own life have actually led to the most wonderful blessings in my life. While I was experiencing these trials and tribulations, life was not fun. But, in the final analysis, my life has been so much better as a result of having survived those trying times. I won’t bore you with the details. You’ll have to trust me on this.

They say that time flies and, the older you get, the faster it flies. Well, I must be getting old because the years are starting to become a complete and continuous blur. Here we are at the end of 2006 and the beginning of 2007. Wow! It seems like only yesterday that we were all preparing for the end of the world at the turn of the new Millennium. Remember Y2K? Remember 9/11? Remember the Alamo? My point is this: all of us are busily going about our daily lives, meeting deadlines, putting out fires, juggling familial responsibilities and trying to maintain some semblance of sanity along the way. Some days, it’s easy to feel like that Circus of the Stars performer, spinning plates on top of wooden rods. We’ve all seen him at work; placing a china plate on top of a pointed stick and spinning it until it stays tenuously on top of that stick. Then, he moves on to the next plate and the next, running back periodically to keep the first plates spinning. You know how the act ends. Eventually, there are more plates than he can handle. They start wobbling and, eventually, the whole show comes crashing down to the amusement of the audience.

I would not have made this correlation had I not taken the time to sit down and think about my past and how my own experiences have shaped my life over the years and how I, in turn, have shaped the lives of those in my sphere of influence. This realization is why I sit down at this time of year to contemplate where I am in life. I look at the last year to see how I’ve improved myself or others around me. I look at what challenges I overcame as well as the areas that I need to continue to improve during the following year. I also look at where I was five and ten years back to see how I’ve improved over the long haul. For me, it’s been a cathartic experience and one that I highly recommend.

We can all relate to this hapless fellow. Most days, I’m sure you’re like me, feeling like you have several plates that are wobbling precariously. It can feel like our whole world is about to come crashing down around us. In today’s world of information overload and multi-tasking, it can be very easy to get caught up in the rat race until you lose sight of what’s important, and to feel that you are spinning your wheels and not gaining any traction in life. This is why I have made a personal point to step back at the end of each year to assess where I am in life.

So, the moral of this story is to make sure that you take some time to pause and reflect where you are in your life. New Years isn’t all about resolutions to start that diet and live a healthier lifestyle…again. It’s an opportunity to take inventory of your own self. I encourage you to do so and I hope and pray that each of you has a wonderful 2007.

Most of life’s accomplishments come in small, apparently insignificant increments. Most of us aren’t going to win the Lotto or the Super Bowl, two events that we would definitely recognize when they occurred. Instead, our achievements are going to be made steadily over time, a step here, a step there, all leading us to bigger and better things. We’ll experience setbacks along the way as well; some larger than others and some seemingly overwhelming compared to our successes.

Kind regards,

Mark R. Magee Chairman – Edinburg Chamber of Commerce

Economic Update by Ramiro Garza, Jr.

In the same period, the construction of single family homes 2006 grew by 10% with the total number of homes built was 732 compared to 691 homes built in the same period in 2005.

The year 2006 was another economic success for the All-America City. At the EEDC, there were a total of seven (7) projects approved by the EEDC Board of Directors that resulted in $24 million in private investment for a total of 635 jobs created and retained.

During 2006, the City’s economy generated over $12.1 million in local sales taxes which represents an increase of 5% for 2006 when compared to the local sales taxes of $11.5 million realized in 2005. With the new Walmart Supercenter and Lowe’s Home Improvement Store, the year 2007 should reflect sales tax growth similar to 2005.

One of the many ways we work with businesses is by providing readily available property with infrastructure. In 2006, the EEDC was also involved in the sale of $2.4 million in real estate at the North Industrial Park and the old IEC Building at the Renaissance Industrial Park. This will translate to private investments of over $10 million to the community for these three (3) companies.

Our labor market continued to strengthen with more people being employed in 2006 with over 26,300 employed as of October. During the same period, the unemployment rate averaged 5.2%.

The year 2006 also reflected continued growth in numerous economic indicators.

The bank deposits in Edinburg averaged over $630 million in 2006 which is an increase of over 5% when compared to the average deposits of $598 in 2005.

Through the month of November 2006, there were a total of $177 million in construction activity that represented an 8% increase when compared to the same period in 2005. New commercial activity grew by over 45% with total value of $71 million in 2006 when compared to the $49 million in value for 2005.

For more information on upcoming projects, please visit our website at www.edinburgedc.com.
