Edinburgh International Festival 2011

Friday 12 August – Sunday 4 September

To the Far West

Visiting companies, many rarely seen on these shores, will include the National Ballet of China with spectacular classical ballet; a moving celebration of cultural memory from acclaimed Vietnamese choreographer Ea Sola, on the loss and renewal of traditional dance in her homeland in the 20th century; the exquisite sound of the Seoul Philharmonic Orchestra with its Chief Conductor Myung-Whun Chung; and the dramatic brilliance of the Shanghai Peking Opera Troupe as, with elaborate and colourful traditional costumes, they combine music, storytelling and breathtaking movement in a contemporary version of Shakespeare’s immortal tragedy, Hamlet.

The finest artists from China, India, Japan, Korea, Vietnam and Taiwan join others from around the world for a three-week exploration of our shared passions. Festival 2011 offers the chance to immerse yourself in the beauty, traditions and distinctive philosophies of these cultures, both ancient and modern.

For centuries the mysterious and alluring civilizations to the East have inspired and fascinated artists from the West. Festival 2011 juxtaposes traditional Asian art with the Orientalism it continues to inspire throughout Europe and the West, offering unique opportunities to discover more about the societies that are redefining the modern world every day.

These artists join with many others from around the world to offer an intense and heady three weeks of exoticism.
