To Whom It May Concern, RE: Designer employment opportunity After working as an Architectural Assistant for 4 years in China, I decided to look for a new challenge by taking a Master's degree in Architecture, Planning and Landscape in Newcastle University (UK). My design approach is both holistic and methodical from conceptual design to construction drawing. I want to continue my passion ‒ the curiosity and experimentation of academic research and creative practice in a range of fields. I am an excellent communicator with clients and my colleagues from various backgrounds. I especially enjoy teamwork, fitting myself into the studio's culture and working collaboratively across multiple disciplines. With experience of architecture, planning and landscape, I embrace design projects in diverse disciplines. Every one of my projects is a research and development journey. When I start a project, the outcome is often unknown which is the most exciting aspect of the process for me. I am not interested in having a style per se. My passion is to invent solutions that are appropriate for the particular place and I always make the most of the possibilities a project can offer. I focus not only on building design itself, but also on how to create a better environment for people to be in and more interesting functional spaces. "So it is regrettable that numerous are excursionists visiting places which are near and easily accessible, but few are travelers who come to places far and dangerous, which, nevertheless, command the most sublime, grotesque and unique views, scarcely enjoyed by ordinary folks. One can never read such places unless one has a strong will-power," — Wang Anshi (1021-1086) 2
I recently graduated from my Master's Degree with a DISTINCTION for my thesis project and I am currently seeking to further develop my practical experience. Please feel free to contact me if you have any enquires. Thank you for your time and consideration. Yours sincerely, Zhou Haozhou

Urban Agri-puncture
Design Thesis
The whole story of urban regeneration in Newcastle is not so straightforward. In many cases,
original communities have become much worse off, where they have to face with demolition or are forced to move elsewhere. This thesis, Urban Agri-puncture, proposes productive landscape for vacant lands and minimum architectural intervention providing necessary infrastructure. It is a new vision for the region, inspiring inhabitants to re-think their environment as not just neighbourhoods in decline but those with potential to transform lives. A new dialogue between man and food aims to be created. Let’s get our hands dirty.

life in today's urban public realm, the same project is re-proposed by way of three separate schemes for the same site. A key focus of each of the three iterations is to consider the role that public space and buildings can play in articulating notions of identity, community and culture. The first iteration is a small-scale urban intervention linking internal and external spaces; the second iteration is a medium-scale re-inhabitation of an existing building; the third iteration consists of a large-scale project developing upon the first two iterations, proposing a new building addition to an existing building.

s a result of urban regeneration, Newcastle city centre has been separated into various function zones, such as shopping area, resident area, Chinese restaurant area and so on. The Chinese cultural centre project aims to stitch the urban fabric by a new master plan, combining the new building with the surrounding context and the neighbourhood. In addition, the project hopes to present the local communities not just the Chinese food, but also the daily life of Chinese people in terms of a chinese Cultural centre. 59

The reflection of sufficient sunlight to offset electrical lighting is one of the central objects for sustainable
design and utilising a light shelf is a common strategy to maximise daylight. This project speculates about a method of parametric design to simulate and optimise daylighting performance by light shelves and utilising Grasshopper and relative plugins. The issue is related to the practical concerns of students in Newcastle University and is located at the footpath bridge near the Robinson library. The study concludes with the optimum solution of light shelves achieving the maximum level of daylighting in the context.

Yaodong is one of the few
remaining traditional cave typologies in China, predominantly found in Loess Plateau, Northern Shanxi Province. This environmentally friendly dwelling typology is well adapted to the local climate and terrain. The caves are recognised as a unique and irreplaceable characteristic of the region. However, with the thriving economy and lure of rapidly developing urban areas, Loess Plateau faces an exodus of settlers-unless certain measures are implemented to sustain its population. Particular concerns surround the poor lighting conditions within the subterranean dwellings which currently limit social activities from occurring within the caves. Therefore, the core idea of the proposal aims to transmit external daylight into underground spaces thus improving the living, learning and working conditions, opening up new opportunities for community to develop and sustain its population.

Freehand Drawing Grainger Market, Newcastle, UK 2013 74
Notan is a Japanese painting concept, a two-tone interpretation of a subject to produce a value pattern
between the black and white that is compositionally balanced. Through Notan drawing, I think that the relationships of different elements in a scene can be focused by merging individual forms into shape-value mass, sacrificing detail. So my main idea is to abstract the key scenes and produce a montage drawing which combine all the features from all the scenes to show the features of the Grainger Market as a whole.
