Simon Steen-Andersen Asthma (2017) for accordion and video Dur. 22′

NOTES Rider • Laptop running Ableton Live • Interface with 6 channels • 2 DPA 4099 microphones (or similar - but for better results make sure they’re supercardioid) • 1 SM58 microphone on a stand (or similar) • Projector (front projection) • Screen (ideally around 5 x 3 meters, reaching the floor or a riser with the player) • iPad for the score (on a low and flat stand) • Stereo PA with subwoofer

Staging The pieces uses front projection and a large bright surface or 16:9 screen (almost) reaching the floor. The screen (ideally about 5 x 3 meters?) should reach down to the level at which the accordion player is seated – i.e. either almost reaching the floor or the level of a riser with the player. The player should be positioned on the right side (seen from the FOH) 0,5–1 meter in front of the screen, so that it looks as if the lips of the woman on the video touches the player at 5:58:50 in the video OR at the locater that will be jumped to when pressing “0” (zero) in the Ableton set. The player should use an iPad with minimal brightness or inverted colours for reading the score to avoid a stand light. And the stand for the iPad should leave the instrument fully visible for the audience (keep low and flat). A microphone stand (for the SM58 or sim.) should be positioned on the players left side. The laptop running the playback should be positioned on the floor in front of the player’s right side, reachable from the player’s position to start the playback and visible to the player as a monitor (video window set to full screen, playing head at the beginning, starting playback by pushing the space bar). Cover the light of the (Apple) logo, turn down brightness. N.B: Deviations from this setup should be discussed with the composer Video The video with click and live sound processing is run on Ableton Live (a free trial version available for download) on a laptop next to the player on stage. Set the display to “mirror” so the play will see the video on the screen. The Ableton set is available for download on the Edition·S website: http://www.edition-s.dk/assets/asthma-live-set Tech and sound A 6 channel soundcard is needed for stereo playback, processed sound output and the click track for the in ear monitor. If the sound card has a headphone output that can output the click track exclusively, the headphone can be plugged directly into the soundcard on stage. The accordion should be amplified and processed with two DPA4099 microphones going directly into the interface. The microphone on the left hand side should be placed on the sound hole to pick up as much as possible of the air sound as possible (without popping). The air sound is EQ’ed differently for each video and the sound is run through a limiter in order bring the notes closer to the level of the air sound. Adjust gain and limiter to obtain this and balance playback, processed sound and speech at the mixer. Score The four different positions of the squared note heads indicate a graduation of pressure applied to the air button, the lowest position being fully pressed and the highest line barely pressed down. Studying The button pressure markings and the sustained notes are just rough proposals. When studying the score the player should study the video and adjust the dynamic curves of the notes to fit the pictures as well as possible. A video file with sound on the speech parts is available in order to better learn how to perform them. Try to mimic the “tone” of the speech on the recordings, but don’t change your own voice or overact.
