B-so-R ---------------------------

Percussion setup Objects Hard: Soft/Accent: Intense: Low-pitch: Complex:

Spring steels on office lamp stand & Wheels (size: wheels from stroller; 1: left, 2: right) Rubber band boxes (1: left, 2: right) & Tubes (w. balloons over opening: 1: left, 2: right) Tealight cups (played with bow/ hand) / Styrofoam / Lion's roar Drip tray (pref. plastic tray used for dishwasher) Saucepan lids (can be played on Chimes) & Lampshades (can be played on Crotales)

Non-pitch percussion 2 Cymbals (1 dark big tone & 1 bright irregular spectra) & Tom Tom (or Snare drum without snare wires) Pitch percussion Feng gong (also known as wind gong) ________________________________ Materials 2 Plastic containers & 2 threaded rods with flange nuts Ping pong balls (about 60 balls) in water & Steel wire sticks (about 5 sticks) pointed towards the wheel - in containers; one on each side of the table where the wheels are fixated

Electronics Soundfiles on mp3-player played through a vibration speaker placed on different objects/material Comment: Both the lids and the lampshades will be played on with a bow. The lids should be with a curved surface to get the more complex sound. You can test to knock on the lid in several different places to see that the timbre changes. Then it is a good lid. Find different sizes and styles, preferably in different pitches. The lampshades should be made out of metal and come from either an office lamp or something else that could work to play on with a bow.

EXPLANATIONS TO OBJECT BUILDING & MORE Tealight cups This is also made easily with only a hammer, nails, piece of wood, three tealight cups (1 empty & 2 with little wax left). You can use a small piece of duct tape for the empty tealight cup to keep it from flying away. The two tealight cups with wax left should have different amount of wax left so that the sound will be different. These two will be played on with a bow. Don't let the nail go to far down since that can make the wax get loose from the cup. And not too high up since the bow will get stuck; in between is best. The last & 3rd one on the brick, is not played on with a bow. It should turn around & be quite loose. It should also work and turn around when you blow on it. All strings will have one set of these tealight cups each.

Rubber band boxes The boxes can be made out of wood instead of cardboard. If the boxes are made out of a harder material, it's easier to tune the elasitc bands. If you use cardboard, you need something in the middle to keep the form of the box since the elastic bands create such a tension that the sides lean inwards. Don't be afraid of playing in an aggressive way. The elastic rubber bands can changed but the sound is important. Follow the dynamic. Play with 2 fingers on each rubber band and play it upwards.

Wheels Use 2 plastic containers for the wheels. Think of matching the height with the wheels. They shouldn't touch the bottom while spinning around. The wheels in the picture are from an old stroller. Found them in an intermodal container for waste. Use a threaded rod to fixate & keep the wheel stabile. To fixate the wheels even more you can use hex or flange nuts. One of the containers is just filled with water but the other one has thick steel wire sticks going through from outside. Use an awl to make the holes for the sticks. Think of the position of the sticks into the wheel before making the hole. Fixate the sticks from outside with duct tape. For visual effect you can put a led light strip/rope (waterproof) either around the box or around the wheel.

Tin can (lion's roar) This is made very easily with only a tin can, awl, string (different material is possible) & a cloth (moist). Different material on the string and different sizes on the tin cans can be used for creating different sounds. Everyone in the ensemble will have one each. One tip: use a rubber band to keep your cloth in position so you don't have to gather everything when it is time to play.

Tubes The 2-4 tubes are made out of cardboard and are usually used for posters and deliveries. Cut the bottom of a balloon and stretch the remaining piece to put it over the opening. To keep it there you can use either duct tape or elastic rubber band. But sometimes it doesn't need that. The cardboard tubes can be different sizes to have different tones. Make the balloon skin tight but not too much It should still be possible to snap/grab the balloon. For a visual effect you can put a small bike light inside of the tube to make the balloon to be illuminated. In the serie of pictures below, it is a tin can instead of a tube but the technique is the same as with a tube.

Feng gong & mallets The feng gong, or wind gong, that were in mind, is the one by Peter Hess, 70 cm or more. When it is bigger, the overtones comes through better so even as big as 90 cm could work. Other models might also work, but then try to see how they work with friction mallets. The mallets are important as well. Normal super rub mallet or other more stiff mallets with rubber ball head, do not reveal the overtones in a good way. The best ones right now are Yin Yang mallets or TTE Konklang. All of them are found in different sizes and with a handle that make it easier to get a good grip. It requires some strength to keep the pressure on the gong. There might be some other brands that have the same kind of quality as these 2 models refered to.

EXPLANATIONS In general General information. Grades of the accidentals.

Play with the wooden part of the stick on the edge/rim of the tomtom. Fast, steady rhythm.

Play with the wooden part of the stick on the tomtom. Fast, steady rhythm. Start on the edge/rim and go towards the stand and end up on the floor. Stay there and make the rhythm on the floor.

The first picture means that the musician plays with a rubber ball mallet (also called super rub or friction mallet. brands that work fine with gong as well is Yin Yang or TTE Konklang) in a circular motion to create a tone with a crescendo. Normal note head means that a real tone is created. The next picture shows a note head that indicates that no tone is created. It is just a noise sound. This sound is created with a stick that make a circular motion on the skin. It will always be a vague sound.

Play with a rubber ball mallet in a downwards motion on the tomtom skin. Hard pressure to get exact rhythm. First three times downwards and then in a circular motion.

Lean down and blow air on the skin of the tomtom. To create an audible sound you need to exaggerate the force. The second picture shows when this effect is used in combination with another sound. Blow air on the skin and play with the wooden part of the stick on the edge/rim of the tomtom. If it is hard to keep on blowing on the skin surface of the tomtom, you can blow with a rhythm instead. The disturbing noisy sound from the air on the skin is needed to create the background to the more percussive sound.

Play with a stick on the surface of the small cymbal. Sharp sound that should ring (l.r. = let ring).

Play on the small cymbal with a bow. It should be a real solid sound. Not too shallow.

A figure that starts with bow on the small cymbal. While that sound fades out, play with a stick on the middle curved point of the cymbal. Very short but distinct sound. Contrast between long lines and short sharp ones.

Different ways of playing on the small cymbal. 1st one is 'playing with a finger nail'. Just hit the edge of the cymbal. Very short small sound, but is used when it is no time to change mallets. This sound is more high pitched than the 2nd picture, which says 'finger tip'. The finger tip is just hitting the surface shortly & the tone is more round.

Play with a stick on the middle curved point of the cymbal and then play with a steel brush (wire brush) to create a tremolo.

Play on the big cymbal with a steel brush (wire brush) to create a tremolo. A continuation of the figure above. While playing a tremolo with a steel brush on the big cymbal, make sounds with your mouth. Make it clear and as a natural part of the sound image.

Play with a stick in a circular motion on the surface of the big cymbal. Make a crescendo and try to find 'nice' frequencies to flow on. In the 2nd picture, go from low frequencies to a more shrieky and sharp sound. Let the sound ring.

Play with a bow on the big cymbal. A distinct sound is preferable.

Make the drip tray (usually used for a dish washer) hang in a way that makes it possible to play both with a bass pedal and mallets and also shake it. Sometimes it breaks when the pedal is used, so practise to find a position where the sound is easily created without damaging the tray. The 1st picture shows when the bass pedal is used to play on the drip tray. The 2nd picture shows when to shake the drip tray.

Play on the drip tray with mallet. This action should be with a lot of effort which will give a good meaning to the following gesture: heavy breathing or at least loud breathing, but only in a way that comes naturally after the previous phrase.

Let all of the 3 tealight cups (put together on a piece of wood) turn all at once. Make them all turn in one motion. If it seems hard to make them sound in a good way, you can use a tambourine instead, if the zils (jingles) are making the right kind of sound. But then you need several tambourines to make the movement between the setups on stage.

Make the tealight cups turn one by one, faster and faster.

Play on a separate tealight cup (with some wax still left in the cup) with a bow. The safest thing to do is to put 2 tealight cups next to each other to be sure to have any if one break. Sometimes the wax get loose while played on with a bow and then it doesn't work. Practise this effect. It can not be exchanged with any other instrument.

Start to play on the elastic rubber bands with fingers. The end of the gesture can be played in two ways. Either hit the side of the rubber band box with the hand palm or grab an elastic band on the side of the box and let it smash onto the side. The more noticeable sound is when you let the band hit the box but if there isn't any time, the hand palm solution can be better.

Pull the elastic band so it is stretched. When you stretch it more, the tone will go up. Find a good position so you can keep the box stabile while you play.

Let your whole hand go through the elastic bands, creating a glissando. If the bands aren't stretched, it might be good to do the glissando with a strong finger instead. That will make a stronger sound.

Start the electronics, soundfile 1, on the first beat and then play the lowest tone on the rubber band box.

2 wheels in a plastic container each with different materials inside. The 1st one has a container filled with water and pingpong-balls (or other similar things). The 2nd one has a container with metal sticks going through small holes on the side, towards the wheel. Every time the wheel spin around the metal sticks will create a sound when they hit the spokes. Picture 1: Spin the 1st wheel and let it spin on its own. Picture 2: Spin the 2nd wheel. Picture 3: Spin both wheels at the same time.

Use a drum stick or any other kind of stick to drag around in the water to create water sounds. A continuos sound. Don't stop until the 'tremolo line' has stopped. You can leave a stick in the water or attached to the side so that you easily can start making this sound.

Play on two flat pieces of styrofoam; one is fixated and one is loose. The sound is similare to sandpaper block. The 1st picture is played with very strong motions. The 2nd picture shows when you play in a different pattern. First a half circle (softer sound) and then straight upwards (sharp sound).

Play a circle motion with the styrofoam, then play with the bow on the tealight cup. Start the electronics, soundfile 5, make a sound yourself (sh) and then start playing a tremolo figure on the tealight cup with a bow.

Picture 1: Play on the styrofoam & hit the tin can with a mallet. Picture 2: Play on the tin can using the string going through the closed bottom of the can. The other side is open to let the sound out. The sound is very dense and harsh but it is possible to play with dynamics.

Play on two tubes with different length. One of the endings has balloon over the opening creating a 'drum' skin. It should be possible to grab the balloon so, not too tight. Picture 1: Grab and let go of the balloon on the 1st tube, then hit the tube 'skin' on the 2nd tube with your finger tip. Picture 2: Hit the 1st tube with your finger tip. Picture 3: Snap the tube 'skin' on the 1st tube. Snap is almost like 'grab and let go'. Only faster.

Four lampshades in different sizes are used. The 1st lampshade means low and 4th means high. In this picture, play on the 1st lampshade with a bow. Get a real tone.

Hit the 3rd lampshade, either with a finger or something else at hand, and then play with a bow on the 4th lampshade.

Start electronics, soundfile 3, then play with a bow on the 3rd lampshade with a low pressure. The sound quality should be very noisy in a soft way. Play with a tremolo style in circular motion. Keep the intensity.

Tap with your left hand finger tip on the 4th lampshade and then play with a bow (held by the right hand) on the 3rd lampshade.

Play with a steel brush (wire brush) inside of the 1st lampshade.

Play with a steel brush (wire brush) inside of the 1st lampshade and then hit the following lampshades 2, 3 & 4 with the handle part of the steel brush.

Four saucepan lids in different sizes are used. The 1st saucepan lid means low and 4th means high. In this picture, hit the 3rd saucepan lid with what you have close by (maybe the screw on the bow) and then play on the 1st lampshade with a bow. Get a real tone.

Play with a bow on the 2nd saucepan lid. Get a real tone even though the actual may differ. That is one of the charms in using the lids. It changes all of the time but try to find a clear tone.

Play on the feng gong with a rubber ball mallet. Play in circular motion. Try to find overtones and continuos sound to ring. Prepare this action since it might take some time for the sound to start. In the 2nd picture you hit the feng gong with a very soft mallet. Only the resonation after the hit should be heard. Even though it usually don't think it is a big difference, the size of the feng gong and the type of mallet is important to create a good sound. In this piece it should be a gong with the size of 60-70 cm and a specific kind of mallet called friction mallet (brand: Yin Yang or TTE Konklang with a handle).

The spring steels are attached to the lamp stands and are palyed in different ways. They shouldn't be played too soft. It should be very clear and percussive sound. In the 1st picture it is played with finger or two fingers in a grip. In the 2nd picture the musician has a stick in the hand so it is easiest to use that and play the spring steel as if it was a guiro. Some pressure required. In the last picture the steel brush is used for the same reason as in the picture before. Guiro style. Should be more powerful sound than with the stick since it is metal against metal.

Hit the lamps stand with a drum stick. Hard, short and clear sound.

This effect has a theatrical aspect and is supposed to exaggerate the feeling of the music. Stretching the mouth and muscles in the face are supposed to show that you need to relax a bit in the body after playing intensily for a while. Don't do it towards the audience, it is more for yourself, and don't do it too fast, then it just look strange. You don't have to show teeth either. It is more stretching the lips and cheek than smiling.

This is another more theatrical gesture. It is a fake sound. Saying the sound 'sh' at the same as you make a sound with your hand palms. Not aggressive but clear and strong. Power.

This is in the same category as the ones before. Snap with your fingers on the right hand. It is a 'fill out' on the way to the next musical figure. You can choose to do this in a more obvious way if you want to but it can also just be a sound passing by.
