CACCINI MONODIES Caccini Monodies (2013) is based on six monodies by the Italian composer, Giulo Caccini (1551-1618), recomposed for Cello, Percussion and live Electronics.

hese six monodies were originally composed for solo voice and basso continuo. They were published as a part of Caccini’s Le Nuove Musiche from 1602, a collection of monodies with careful performance instructions. Caccini vision was to create solo vocal music that could almost speak in tones; precisely ornamented melodies with a thorough bassline and a plucked string instrument adding simple accompaniment. Lyrics were secondary and the counterpoint were “hidden”. Caccini published Le Nuove Musiche in order to avoid further misinterpretations of his monodies.

He writes in Le Nuove Musiche: “Note that I have been accustomed, in all places that have come from my pen, to indicate with numbers over the bass part the thirds and the sixths – major when there is a sharp, minor when a flat – and likewise when sevenths or other dissonances are to be made in the inner voices as an accompaniment. It remains only to say that ties in the bass part are used thusly by me: after the [initial] chord, one should play again only the notes [of the harmony] indicated [and not the bass note again], this being (if I am not mistaken) most fitting to the proper usage of the archlute (and easiest way to manage and play it), granted that this instrument is more suitable for accompanying the voice, especially the tenor voice, than any other."

In Caccini Monodies, I have been faithful to the original melodies and the basso continuo part; my artistic goal was to create a jointed set of beautiful melodies without words and with a different “cool” sound. Old and new intertwined.

The most radical aspect of Caccini Monodies - compared to the original monodies - is the omitted human voice.

Adding live electronics and different “musique concrète” weather sounds to the music, adds a certain timeless quality to the composition, but the Caccini Monodies are still – as there were back then - monodies; a single strong melodic line with accompaniment, though with a few exceptions.

Caccini Monodies has no religious content, but I imagine this music performed in churches and without a pause.

Caccini Monodies is dedicated to the memory of my mother and written to Mono Duo (Peter Morrison & Simon Christensen) It was kindly financially supported by Danmarks Nationalbanks Jubilæums Fond af 1968 and KODA.

Zither – 2 chromatic octaves + chords E-A-D-F-G-C Low tom-tom (14”-16”) w/ambassador skin and sizzles attached to the drum.

Comments on the instrumentation: The Zither should be amplified and the instrument should never be replaced with software samples.

The MIDI keyboard should have least 29 keys, 8 sliders, 10 encoders and 20 buttons (like Novation SLK MKII).

The Expression Pedal controls the bass sound and the violin is only played pizzicato.

Comments on set-up 1 and 2: All these modules and pedals create the bass sound that I prefer for this piece.

It is possible though to create another bass sound in cooperation with the composer or even to add a third performer to play this part on a different instrument?

The Moogerfooger LowPass Filter cannot be replaced, it has a solo (!) part in Vedrò’l mio sol.

Expression pedal MIDI keyboard Laptop running Max/Msp Runtime Software sampler like NI Kontakt with Celesta samples (runs inside Max/Msp) Soundcard (min. 4 inputs & 4 outputs) Contact microphone for the Zither Microphone for the Violin (like DPA 4060) PA System Amplifier for the Zither and a connected volume pedal (combo w/tubes preferably) Amplifier for the sounds of the two electronic set-ups (combo w/tubes preferably) Cables and extension sockets

Comments on the electronic equipment: The expression pedal is patched (jack cable) through the MIDI Keyboard and thereby recognized by Max/Msp. If a software sampler like Kontakt is not available, a Max/Msp sampler can be created for the purpose.

Amplification of the Zither and Violin is essential.

General remarks about the performance: The cello should never be amplified and therefore sets the level of the electronic equipment; everything should be in perfect (!) balance.

The bass part is controlled by the expression pedal and programmed so that the heel down turns off the sound and toe up starts the next pitch. If it happens that the performer is a pitch ahead, then skip the next pitch and it is on track again.

Or if the performer is a pitch behind perform the toe up twice, and it is back on track again.

The percussionist has five very important “musique concrète” sound files as his/her disposal: Rain, Bird, Wind, Heavy wind and Ocean. They can be used as the performer pleases, mixed or alone, or as described later in the run through of the six different monodies.

There should be no pause between the six monodies.

General remarks about the notation: •

The bass pitch is notated between the Cello and Zither system and indicates that the percussionist should move his/her foot to a toe up position. The bass part also has a rhythm; it is notated precisely in the score where it should change pitch.

The x-notehead in the Zither part means muting of the pitch; always perform this mute with the nail of the finger and as audible as possible. Hit it!

•

The String Tremolo is a on the string effect. Imagine drawing a wave with a very loose wrist on the string; obtaining a kind of soft and delicate tremolo sound. Never let the bow leave the string.

Comments on performing the six monodies: 1/ Tutto’l dì piango •

The Tutti button should be ON.

•

Before entering the first bar of this monody the Rain-File should be triggered by hitting the FADE UP (ON) button on the MIDI Keyboard, the sound comes very slowly in and reaches it’s dynamic maximum after three minutes. The instruments should not start performing before this maximum.

•

At the first fermata just before section B, the Rain-File should be start a diminuendo to a much lower level, something similar to piano. This could be done manually by turning the encoder gradually or by hitting the FADE DO (ON) Rain-File button, but remember to hit the button again (OFF) - this stops the diminuendo - when the wanted dynamic level is obtained. This “fermata” section should be at least 45 seconds. The instruments should not play before the piano level is reached.

•

Hit the FADE UP (ON) Rain-File button again at the second fermata just before section E. The level will increase to the maximum within a minute, but the players should not wait for this to happen; play shortly after hitting the button.

•

Hit the FADE DO (ON) Rain-File button in bar 85. Keep the bass pitch hanging until the first note of Section H. At bar 102 hit the FADE UP (ON) for the Bird-File.

The Tutti button should be OFF.

2/ Dolcissimo Sospiro •

The Dolcissimo button should be ON.

•

The cello should begins when the Bird-File has reached it’s maximum.

•

Hit FADE DO (ON) Bird-File button at the first fermata bar 14.

•

Hit FADE DO (OFF) Bird-File button at the fermata bar 31.

•

Hit FADE DO (ON) Bird-File button at bar 45.

•

At the very end, turn OFF the Dolcissimo button.

3/ Alme Luci Beate •

The Alme button should be ON.

•

Before the cello starts, the Wind-File should be turned up manually just a little bit so one can feel it but barely hear it.

•

Any combination of sounds can be added to this Monody, but should be used sparely.

•

All sounds should be faded down just before playing the next Monody – a moment of silence.

4/ Amarilli Mia Bella •

Turn OFF the Alme button and turn ON the Amarilli button.

•

Hit FADE UP (ON) Strong-File button at the first bar.

•

Hit FADE UP (OFF) + FADE DO (ON) Strong-File button at the CODA and while playing the last Zither notes, find a good mix of the Wind-File and the Rain-File sounds.

•

At the very end, turn OFF the Amarilli button

•

Turn the CV1 gain completely down on the A-131 VCA.

5/ Amor, io parto •

Turn ON the Amor button.

•

At the very end, turn OFF the Amor button

•

Turn the IN 1 and IN 2 completely down on the A-138 mixer.

•

Let the sound files sound and wait at least 30 seconds before entering the next Monody.

6/ Vedrò’l mio sol •

The MIDI-Keyboard should be programmed as written in the score; all notes sounds two octaves and a major second above written pitch. Except G#4 which should sound an octave + a perfect fourth above written pitch. In section E it is written “set midi-keyboard to +1 octave” and later “set midi-keyboard to +0 octave”; this is only necessary if the midi-keyboard only has 25 keys and should be done by hitting the + button on the midi-keyboard.

•

Turn ON the Vedro 1 button.

•

Play the tom-tom with your right hand and the MIDI-Keyboard with your left hand or vice versa.

•

The X note in bar 42, 50 etc. can be any sound of the percussionist choice, maybe a tambourine or just the edge of the tom-tom.

•

Hit FADE DO (ON) Rain-File button at section F and turn In1 + In2 completely down on the Doepfer Mixer module.

•

Turn OFF the Vedro 1 button + turn ON the Vedro G button at section F.

•

Hit the LP SOLO (ON) on the second beat of section G, the sound enters together with the cello on the third beat.

•

Violin: The pizzicato “finger-bouncing” techniques refers to the finger bouncing up and down: Bouncing down: Hit the body of the instrument with the finger, but strike the string (as a grace note) on the way down.

Bouncing up: Hit the string with the nail of the finger on the way up.

Hold the violin like a cello.

•

Hit the FADE UP (ON) Ocean-File at bar 139.

•

Turn OFF the Vedro G button + turn ON the Vedro M + turn OFF the LP SOLO at bar 140.

•

Hit the FADE DO (ON) Wind-File at the fermata just before section M.

•

Hit the FADE DO (ON) Ocean-File at the very end.
