Timothy Baxter Cantata Respice in me

(1959)

Latin psalm texts from Liber Usualis for soprano, organ and strings Dur. 17

Cantata Respice in me is one of my most important works. It exists in various versions. The latin text is taken from the Bible. The first performance with soprano and strings took place at Greyfriars, Oxford, in 1959. The soprano Soo Bee Lee sang the solo part with the conductor Michael Bush leading The Neri String Orchestra. It was later performed at Catholic Student Centre, London, and in The Duke’s Hall, Royal Academy of Music, London. It was performed in 2013 in Søborg kirke, Gilleleje, Denmark, with the soprano Cecilia Lindwall, organ and a string quintet in a theme concert with only my music. The cantata won Frederick Corder Memorial Prize in 1959 and in 1964 also Patrons’ Fund Prize, The Royal College of Music, London, with Michael Tippet in the jury.
