PERFORMANCE NOTES Etudes (Book II) is a work consisting of four pieces composed for the facial muscles. Etudes V–VII are composed for one, two and three performers and are to be performed in three small rooms for three, one and two audience members at a time (see below). Each room is furnished only with a chair each for the performer(s) and the audience member(s). There is no right order for an audience member to experience the etudes and it is also up to the audience member(s) to decide how many etudes they would like to experience. Etude VIII consits of the three etudes performed at the same time. This etude is to be performed in a larger room for a unspecified number of audience members. The duration of each etude is six minutes. Kor (Etude V) Female performer 1 (3 audience members) Marsch (Etude VI) Male performer 1, Male performer 2 (1 audience member) Double (Etude VII) Female performer 2, Male performer 3, Female performer 3 (2 audience members) Klagesang (Etude VIII) for all six performers performing their individual Etudes (no specific number of audience members) The performers are to learn their etudes by heart as they won’t have the score in front of them for the performances. (A structural overview and setup is to be found as appendix for each etude).

THE SCORE General notation: Dynamics indicate the extent of the movement of the indicated facial muscle or how hard to blink with the eyes. Gradual transition from the neutral position of the indicated muscle to the given dynamic / from the given dynamic to neutral position of the indicated muscle. Pauses indicate to be in neutral position or having eyes open / closed. Make the whole body tremble through high physical tension and created by clenching the fists (used for creating the "silent scream").
The eyebrow muscles: Move your eyebrows upwards. Move your eyebrows downwards.
Opening and closing the eyes: Close eyes: Notes indicates when to close eyes. R/L: Right/Left eye.
The lip muscles: Open mouth. Closed mouth. Move the lower lip downwards showing the teeth of the lower part of the mouth. Move the upper lip upwards showing the teeth of the upper part of the mouth. Move the lower lip downwards and upper lip upwards at the same time creating an oblong shape with the mouth showing the teeth. Move the left and right part of the lips diagonally upwards. Create a round shape with the mouth without showing the teeth. Move the right part of the lips diagonally upwards. Move the left part of the lips diagonally upwards. Move the right and left part of the lips diagonally downwards.

Structural overview The etude consists of three big parts: A, B, C. Each part consists of 15 bars (60 ). The first bar always functions as an opening bar appearing only in the close eyes system. When a part begins at the same time as a part in of the other etudes the eyebrow muscles and the lip muscles system are included creating a “silent scream�. The remaning 14 bars are in the eyebrow muscles system and the lips muscles system divided into 3 bars + 4 bars + 3 bars. The close eyes system is based on the same structure in all three parts, but is not related to the structure of the eyebrow muscles system and the lip muscles system.

The remaning 8 bars are in the eyebrow muscles system and the lip muscles system divided into 4 bars + 4 bars. The close eyes system is based on the same structure in all three parts (changes will only occur in part A), but is not related to the structure of the eyebrow muscles system and the lips muscles system.
