Simon Christensen Fluctuate only (2017) for english horn Dur. 4′33″

Fluctuate only is dedicated to Birgitte Lindum, the English horn player of the Copenhagen Phil; with her open mind, musical skills, and a desire to discover the instrument from a different angle, we developed the sound material for Fluctuate only together.

Circled Letters Alternative fingering – preferably a more closed sound.

Hit the B key – percussive sound. Always notated outside staff and without ledger lines.

Close the reed with the tongue – without blowing into the instrument. This changes the pitch of the keyclick.

Slap tongue – blow first and then strike the reed with the tongue Smorzato Amplitude fluctuation achieved by jaw movement – no pitch variation Two Odd Time Signatures These time signatures takes their subdivision from eight note triplets and is used in this piece instead of multiple tempo changes.

Tongue Staccato Quick motion of the tongue without touching the reed Pitch Pitches performed with alternative or standard fingering should be in tune. They should not be adjusted to fit the tuning of the natural harmonics.
