Greta Eacott GRAINZ (2016) Movement 4 for a group of 3 or more people (no previous experience required), each with two handmade ‘grainz’ shakers Dur. > 6′ (exact duration depends on the endurance and number of the players)

PERFORMANCE NOTES To Make A Set Of ‘Grainz’ Shakers • Take two plastic or glass jars • Fill both jars 1/3 full with a grain, pulse or bean of your choice (e.g. rice, lentils, black beans, kidney beans, chick peas). You may also prefer to use multiple/mixed ingredients.

players should at approximately the same time raise their fully extended arms (with a ‘grainz’ shaker in each hand) straight up above their head, into the starting position. NB: Ensure that the jars are facing upwards so that the contents of the jars doesn’t fall out.

Set-up GRAINZ, Movement 4 takes place with the performers spread out amongst the audience. Ensure that you have enough space to lower your fully extended arms from above your head to your sides, without pouring the ‘grainz’ onto the audience.

2. An Independent Descent Bringing your right arm forward and left hand backward, allow your full extended arms to lower as slowly as possible toward your legs. As you do this allow your body to turn slowly to the left, whilst keeping arms straight and feet in the same position throughout.

PERFORMING GRAINZ, Movement 4

As your arms get to the half way point, subtly tilt your hands so that the content of your GRAINZ shakers starts to slowly tip out and onto the floor.

Before Starting Ensure each player has one ‘grainz’ shaker in each hand, and that the lid is off so that the contents of the shakers is able to fall out. 1. Starting Position Walk into your chosen starting position amongst the audience. When all players are in their starting position and there is stillness in the room - all

3. Drop Once all the contents of your shakers has fallen out onto the floor, and your hands are fully lowered to your side. Turn your body to face forward again, and drop the jars on the floor. NB: If using glass jars, be aware that these jars may smash at this point. 4. Stillness Stand completely still in this position, until all players have dropped their jars and there is silence and stillness in the room, at which point the piece is over.
