On 21 December, 2014, twelve horses were found dead in the pond Bessastaðatjörn. For some reason they had run out on the pond, which was covered with ice, which turned out to be too thin for the herd with obvious consequences. The whole incident is truly mysterious. Some have blamed the weather, which had been tough and stormy, a hypothesis I truly doubt; The horses were used to stand grassing in this area (which funnily enough is outside the president’s house) and this type of weather is hardly unusual in Iceland at this (or in fact, any) time of year. Something must have scared them to seek shelter on the thin ice, but the reason why will probably never be known. I want to dedicate this piece to these twelve purest of souls, may they rest in peace.
“Jór” is an old Icelandic word for “horse”. In this sense
During the performance a video of the horses being lifted from the pond is to be shown, muted and in slow motion: https://vimeo.com/917134957/624e20aa7d
