Shadow Pieces (2007)

for accordion solo

Dur. 22’

NOTES

Shadow Pieces (2007) is a collection of four pieces. The pieces were written at the request of Bjarke Mogensen after he had given my accordion concerto Shadow Phases its first performance.

The musical material comes from the accordion concerto although it is treated in an entirely different manner. What the two works share is the cultivation of a dark colouring of the sonority of the music, which constitutes “the shadows”.

The pieces are named: Midnight, Twilight Toccata, Twisted Tango and Darkness

Kasper Rofelt, 2012

Midnight, Twilight Toccata and Twisted Tango have been recorded by Bjarke Mogensen on Dacapo 8.226564, Kasper Rofelt: The song I’ll never sing (2012), together with a number of other works for accordion by the same composer. See www.dacapo-records.dk

PERFORMANCE NOTES

I. Midnight

Shake: Bellowshake

N.B.: Natural bellows

Vib.: Vibrato

Z: Indicates a fast, un-measured tremolo

II. Twilight Toccata

Measure 15 and 17: The number of repetitions is up to the performer. The organic flow is absolutely essential.

“Senza misura” and “Presto possibile” measures: The stems have been omitted to make it clear that the performer can shape these measures. The two hands must play legato.

Ricochet: The ricochets are marked marked by tremolo marks and “ricochets” or “ric.” The subdivisions are written rhythmically in the metrum like an ordinary “bellowshake”.

The end: The “senza misura” ending with the bellowshakes can be shaped at will.

III. Twisted Tango

Measure 64ff: The glissando should form a general line that falls. The instruction legato poss means that the overall, falling line should seem like one.

IV. Darkness

This piece should give the impression of being an improvisation. The tempo indications are merely guidelines. This means that the flow is essential and some tempo changes may be adapted to the interpretation along the way.

B: The knocks on the bellow(s) are supposed to be sharp and dry.

Clustergliss.: The clusterglissandi are in fact fast, legato fingermovements on the keyboard towards the target tone(s). They should be as organic as possible. The number of fingers must decrease gradually if the number of target tones is less than the number of tones at the outset and vice versa.

Measure 125ff: The clusters/chords at the top of the system are supposed to cloud the clarity of the melodic lines of the other staves. The registration should favour this aspect as opposed to a registration with more clearly defined lines.
