King of Glorie (1968/1989) Organ Recessional version for organ
solo
Dur. 3′
PREFACE
The motet, King of Glorie, was written for a small 3-part church choir which I directed in the 1960’s. It was first performed at the St. Mellitus Festival and later included in a choral concert in London for which an optional alto part was added. The text, by the seventeenth century divine, George Herbert, followed an earlier setting of his poem “Sweet Day, so cool, so calm, so bright” for soprano and piano. The better-known “King of Glorie” was well suited to a festive setting in the style of the church anthems I enjoyed singing as a boy. The lively organ part led to an idea for an organ solo specially written for my London wedding in 1989.
Timothy Baxter (24.05.35–15.05.21)
The first performance of King of Glorie at our wedding in 1989 was followed by several performances over the years. On September 11, 2011, it was performed as a prelude to Her Majesty the Queen entering Sorø Monastery Church upon its 850-year anniversary. It was also performed at my husband’s funeral service on May 29, 2021.
Birthe Baxter
The title refers to the text of the motet drawn from the poems of George Herbert:
1 - King of glorie, King of peace, I will love Thee
And that love may never cease, I will move Thee
Thou hast granted my request, Thou hast heard me:
Thou didst note my working breast
Thou hast spared me.
2 - Wherefore with my utmost art I will sing Thee, And the cream of all my heart I will bring Thee
Though my sins against me cried, Thou dids’t cleare me; And alone when they replied Thou dids’t heare me
3 - Sev’n whole days, not one in sev’n I will praise thee, In my heart though not in heaven I can raise Thee, ‘Thou grew’st soft and moist with tears Thou relentedst
And when justice call’d for fears
Thou dissentedst.
4 - Small it is in this poore sort
To enrol Thee
Ev’n eternitie’s too short
To extol Thee.
