PREFACE
The motet, King of Glorie was written for a small 3-part church choir which I directed in the 1960’s. It was first performed at the St. Mellitus Festival and later included in a choral concert in London for which an optional alto part was added.
Timothy Baxter
The text is by the seventeenth century divine George Herbert:
1 - King of glorie, King of peace, I will love Thee
And that love may never cease, I will move Thee
Thou hast granted my request, Thou hast heard me: Thou didst note my working breast
Thou hast spared me.
2 - Wherefore with my utmost art I will sing Thee, And the cream of all my heart I will bring Thee
Though my sins against me cried, Thou dids’t cleare me; And alone when they replied Thou dids’t heare me
3 - Sev’n whole days, not one in sev’n I will praise thee, In my heart though not in heaven I can raise Thee, ‘Thou grew’st soft and moist with tears Thou relentedst And when justice call’d for fears
Thou dissentedst.
4 - Small it is in this poore sort To enrol Thee Ev’n eternitie’s too short To extol Thee.
King of Glorie
