PERFORMANCE NOTES Marimba Eroica 1 Marimba Eroica player (two heavy, soft sticks) 4 assistants, each responsible for preparing and dampening one note (1 being the highest): 1: í frame with aluminium-foil í board of styrofoam í plastic ball (red) in a suspended jam glass (suspended by attaching a piece of string to the bottom of the glass, holding the string in the hand, use the glass from the “Simon” box with the lower pitch) 2: í frame with plastic foil (the material used for colouring lamps) í pencil (and gaffa tape) í golf ball in a (hand held) jam glass (use the same set as assistant 4) 3: í í í í

frame with baking paper hard mallet (and gaffa tape) suspended brown plastic cups (hanging from a stand) board of styrofoam

4: í í í í

golf ball in a (hand held) jam glass (use the same set as assistant 2) suspended transparent plastic cups (hanging from a stand) frame with aluminium-foil (if big enough, use the same as assistant 1) board of styrofoam

If available: 1 extra assistant for helping out the 4 assistants if necessary.

Assistant 4 can also help out if necessary until the first entry in measure 85. í í í í

The “mordent” sign means that the instrument is prepared Dampen notes and preparations on rests (except from m. 146) The star means press hand against the material on the frame The “o” means either “no hand” in combination with the mordent or “no preparation” when alone

Chromelodeon I 1 player, place snare drum on top. í í í í

The “mordent” sign means the snare is on and ringing/beating with the notes The “o” means take off the snare (put on/off gently, without a hitting sound) The squared note heads are air sounds produced by only slightly depressing the key Dotted line with an arrow from squared to normal note heads means gradual transition from air sound to pitch by adding pressure (or vice versa) í Arrow up means the high note corresponding with the pitch of the jam glass of ME assistant 1 í Two arrows up means the highest note on the instrument í “Att. tempo: 4 cycles” means the number of beatings to count, independent from tempo Bloboy 1 player, dismantle the high pipes, stuff the two higher of the three lower pipes.

For the beginning cover the tube for the high pipes with gaffa tape.

Later attach the “rattling” plastic bag, air tight, so that it inflates and deflates effectively with the bellow (or rather opposite the bellow). The bag should ideally be attached on a long tube, making it clearly visible to the audience, alternatively directly on the opening.

Gaffa tape is used during the performance to cover all holes of the bellow, except the lowest one. í í í í í

Normal note head: A pitch is expected (from the lowest pipe) Squared note head: An air sound is expected Down bow: Bellow down (“exhale”) Up bow: Bellow up (“inhale”) Harmonic note head: Whistle-tone appearing while inhaling with only one hole open on the bellow, during the last 10% before full.
