INTRODUCTION Monodi (Etude IX) is the ninth piece in a cycle of pieces composed for the facial muscles. The piece is composed for two performers (either: female & male; male & male; female & female), and is to be memorized.

NOTATION Eyebrows The five lines indicate five physical positions for the eyebrows: 5th line = As high as possible 4th = High 3rd = In neutral position 2nd = Low 1st = As low as possible Glissando indicates to make a gradual movement from one position to another. Close eyes A note indicates to close the eyes. Lips Mouth closed Mouth open The lips consists of three different positions: Move the right and left corner of the mouth diagonally upwards (creating a smile); dynamic = Ć’ Create a round shape with your mouth (not showing teeth); dynamic = Move the upper lip upwards and lower lip downwards creating an uplong shape (showing clenched teeth); dynamic = Ć’
STRUCTURE The piece consists of three big parts: A (b. 1–15) A’ (b. 16–30) B (b. 31–45) C (b. 46–60) B’ (b. 61–75) A’’ (b. 76–90) It’s only the Close eyes system that creates the variation of part A and B (the Eyebrows and Lips systems are repeated). The Close eyes system consists of 12 bars that are repeated throughout the piece.
