Bára Gísladóttir NAT (2020) for SATB choir and double bass Dur. 6′

About the piece When I was asked to write for the Danish National Vocal Ensemble, I was told they were searching for a short, thoughtful, piece which sort-of depicted the nativity scene. More specifically a piece NOTE that should portray the quiet stillness that remains after the angels, shepherds, and animals have

EXPLANATIONS NAT is built on a multilayered texture of trills and tremoli. These are indicated in three different ways: 1. A freely drawn irregular line This type is the freest one when it comes to speed and register. Feel free to interpret it in your own way, but remember that it’s a trill, so its register should not become too broad.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
2. A regular rapid wavy line This type of trill should be sung very rapidly and only boasts a tiny register, it’s basically almost like a wide vibrato, just a bit more trill-like. 3. A steady trill/tremolo
w
bw
This type is the most precise in terms of pitch and tempo. The trill should be static in speed and pitch, where a tremolo of four lines indicates the fastest possible. This type can also increase and decrease in speed, indicated in the following way:
Notation
U
This notehead indicates an approximate range in the given register.
Voice Samples There are voice samples of the techniques in the following bars: Alto + Tenor 1 and 2, bar 1 Bass 4 and 5, bar 1
