PROGRAM TEXT Ouvertures means beginnings or openings. The piece consists of many openings and beginnings - doors to different musical spaces, each time revealed or explored a bit further. In one room the Chinese “Song of Four Seasons” is put under a microscope so that one can hear details, which are normally not audible. By stretching the song to about 50 times slower than normal, one can enter a rich world of odd tones, microscopic vibrations and little glissandi not belonging to the actual melody, but being a natural part of the human voice and the Chinese tradition of singing. The gu-zheng is tuned in a special way in order to play along on this strange melody consisting of very small intervals. In this way the “Song of Four Seasons” indirectly colors the whole piece by dictating the limited number of tones on the gu-zheng, also used as foundation for the tones and harmonies used in the orchestra. The act of opening is also made into a theme in the opening of the little secret compartment of the gu-zheng used for tuning the instrument. On one side, the player must open the box to be able to play on the tuning pegs toward the end of the piece. On the other side, opening and closing the box seems to control the music and the orchestra – as if opening and closing doors to different musical worlds. Simon Steen-Andersen

INSTRUMENTATION 2 Oboes Clarinet in Eb Clarinet in Bb Bass Clarinet in Bb 2 Bassoons Contrabassoon 4 Horns in F (Horns 1 & 3 tuned down a quarter of a tone) 2 Piccolo Trumpets (Trumpet 2 tuned down a quarter of a tone) (with Harmon mute) Trumpet in Bb (with Harmon mute) 3 Trombones Percussion 1: Megaphone with detachable microphone (for tested brands and models please consult Edition路S ), marimba, rattle, sand paper, high slide whistle, guiro, long light stick (ca. 1 m.), wooden chimes, glockenspiel (four staves used), very soft marimba mallets, 2 rods. Percussion 2: Air spray (as the ones used for cleaning photo and computerequipment), vibraphone, thunder sheet, large bass drum, 3 tom toms (small, medium, large), small piece of paper, block with sand paper, piece of A3 cardboard on a stand (to slide the paper and sandpaper on), very soft BD stick(s), drum stick, rods, hard mallet. Percussion 3: Megaphone with detachable microphone (for tested brands and models please consult Edition路S ), vibraphone, whip, medium size cymbal, very small cymbal, wooden chimes, sand paper, long light stick (ca. 1 m.), rods, bow for the vibraphone, very soft stick, very soft bass drum stick. Sampler (played by the pianist): A five-octave MIDI keyboard is required in order to trigger the samples. Monitor loudspeakers should be placed on each side of the stage front in addition to a monitor for the conductor. Gu_zheng solo (amplified) Violin 1 Violin 2 Viola Violoncello Double Bass (preferably with 4 strings, the 4th string tuned down approximately one octave)

Gu-zheng solo (amplified) The gu-zheng should have a mechanic lock-mechanism (non magnetic) for closing the lid, making a small percussive sound and making the strings ring when opening the lid to the small department with the tuning pegs. The player uses a bow and a slide. Two stands should be placed next to instrument for easy, fast and silent access to the bow (right side) and the slide (left side). The stand with the score should be so low, that the audience can see the actions on the instrument. The gu-zheng is notated in 2 systems: 1) Resulting sound. The resulting sound is reduced to pitch (normal note heads), any noise sound (square note heads) and any ”impulse”-like sound (cross). 2) Actions. Notated as if in D major although most strings are tuned differently. Scordatura: (a cd with all the tones is available for easy and precise tuning)

Preparation:

Remove the bridge of the lowest string and detune it a bit until it vibrates percussively against the wood when plucked.

- 8th tone alternations are notated with an arrow.

Signs: left side strings (wrong side of the moveable bridges), right side strings (normal side), both sides. open / close box: open / close the lid to the small department with the tuning pegs. open lid completely / bang the lid against the instrument (no violence intended). unspecified cluster (for example used for chords of normal notes or to show an area to be dampened, indicated by to the note head on top: normal note; a group of normal tones, squared note; an area to be dampened, held or slided on with the hand(s), etc.). arrow down; damp specified strings, arrow up; lift hand suddenly (making the strings sound a bit from the stickyness of the hand – before lifting increase the pressure on the strings). slide hand on the strings (along the strings) in the direction of the arrow. glissando by bending: start gliss. immediately and spread it evenly during the whole note value without emphasizing the last tone. bend string in the interval up to the small note before plucking the string. “guiro-gliss.” on Bridge slide finger/nail along the small strings on the other side of the “bridge” (furthest to the right) making a percussive “guiro” effect. “guiro-gliss.” on Pegs

General notes Conductor:

The conductor must have a sound monitor with the output from the sampler: Two times the conductor must follow the tempo of a sample. In m. 135-140 a sample is played with a song stretched to be about 10 times too slow, after 7 seconds (m. 137) the sample accelerates to normal tempo (m. 140) and then freezes (m.141). From m. 137-140 the conductor must follow this melody

as it accelerates from extremely slow to normal tempo. In m. 166-168 a sample is played with an orchestra changing slightly up and down in tempo (as if played on an old record player). In m. 166 and 167 the conductor should follow the average tempo of the sample, making a steady tempo that fits more or less with the downbeats of the orchestra, continuing this tempo independently in m. 168. A CD with the 2 samples is available for the conductor to practice and learn the tempi.

Quarter tone notation: Dynamics:

(8th tone alternations in the gu-zheng are notated with an arrow.)

The dynamics of the gu-zheng are notated as action dynamics, meaning that the resulting amplified dynamics are sounding louder; at least 1-2 dynamic levels higher – when the gu-zheng plays mezzo-forte it should be adjusted to still be in the foreground in comparison to the other instruments playing forte. Crescendi should be performed exponentially; they should be late and “exploding” (like “zoom”).

Glissandi:

Glissandi should be distributed evenly and should start immediately, not emphasizing the first or the last tone.

Strings: Double bass scordatura: Detune the 4th string ~ 1 octave. The exact tuning is not important. The piece should preferably be played on 4 stringed instruments, however, if played on a 5 stringed instrument, detune both 4th and 5th string ~ 1 octave and perform the “bend string outside the fingerboard”-actions on the 5th string at the position corresponding to the position on the 4th string. Dynamics:

ppppp should be as soft as possible, fff should be as loud as possible.

Signs: gradual transition – for example between two bow positions.

move the bow along the string (no sideward movement) as indicated from bridge to fingerboard (arrow upward) or from fingerboard to bridge (arrow downward), making an even, soft and light noisy sound (with no audible pitch).

double bass: Bend 4th string outside the fingerboard at the indicated position to make a dense percussive rattling sound when bowed. To get the most percussive and noisy sound try out different bow positions and look for the right bow pressure, bow speed and direction.
